Shortly after being married ,my wife and I rented a duplex for about 2 years while we saved a downpayment for the purchase of a house. When we moved out , there was an inspection of the property. The agent said that it was cleaner than they had ever seen a unit being moved out of. Were we naive, we thought you were supposed to take care of something as if it was your own . What happened to PRIDE .
Some people don’t care and most people gets states funding meaning (we the hard working) pay for their rent amongst other things. These types of people only care about themselves unfortunately!!
Install a automatic water shut off on the main line coming into the home. It senses more than normal water usage and shuts the water off. Very cheap insurance to help prevent this happening again.
Yup - Exactly what I was thinking. You can either use the ones as you say, senses more water usage than usual and shuts it off, and or the ones that connect to sensors you place in different places that remotely talk to the shut-off computer and turn off if water is detected. With rentals, you have to think about the worst case scenario, and then tenants will not look after, or maintain the property, so you have to take that over (or a company). This means installing super resistance materials, and routine maintenance like replacing furnace filters etc. and of course, the small cost of insurance items like automatic water shut off.
I'm in the process of buying my first rental property. I told my mentor that I wanted to do some really nice upgrades. Watching this video helps me to understand why he is saying not to do pricey upgrades for tenants.
I’ve held and operated up to 27 rentals (single family homes) at once and let me tell you Don’t do upgrades or anything above par At least until you’ve had the tenants for 3-4 months and your sure that they are not going to destroy and/or stop paying. Best to just go Mid grade nice when dealing with rentals.
I rent a cottage. Went through a real estate. They said they’d check references. Prospective tenant due to come over in the evening. At 3pm, a guy I know calls me and says :do not rent to her. She has been squatting at the place she is currently living in for over a year. I called agent and told her to not show up. Dodged a bullet.
10X that may not even cover the demo / cleanup .. they will have to gut all the walls and run those large blowers for days to get the framing dry. then all the anti mold treatment.. thats before they even start to put walls and floors back in. man that sucks all this happened from negligence. this is the type of damage you expect from a burst pipe or hurricane . when do you consider just building a new house haha
I'm so very sorry you had to experience this nightmare! I bought a house for $5000, fixed it up over the course of 2 years, lived in it for 4 years, and rented it out Section 8 for 3 years, same tenant. I knew I was lucky I got a good tenant. After seeing your video, I realize I had an angel in the house! Any time I went over there the house was spotless. The only problem I ever had was that the kids liked to flush diapers down the toilet. We got a grip on that crap fast. When she went to move out, she actually had friends who wanted to BUY the house. I wound up selling it to her friends. I never had to lift a finger. I know my experience was a freak one-in-a-million happening. I'd never do it again though, because I know that my chances of having YOUR experience is far greater than a repeat of my previous tenant. Best to you. Please post updates.
They probably were so good because they likely couldn’t afford anything else. I bet they figured that if they weren’t on their best behavior, they’d be on the street. They sound like they were good people; I hope them moving out means that their luck picked up. (i.e the head of the household either got a better job or got a raise)
All people that rent are not like this or sec 8. But I know one thing if a sec 8 renter does this to a house they should never be able to rent sec8 again. And if your a landlord you got to check on your homes to make sure this is not going on. You put it in the lease that you can come ones a month to check. Ones you see there good renters than you can back off. I know some people that rent out and they never check to see if things are going good or not. Until there trouble than they go but it to late than.
That's not a typical experience for anyone. Those issues can be solved by frequent home inspections, background checks, a large deposit, and a strong lease. All my landlord friends who think they can just sit back and count the money are bound to fail.
I was a Comcast Tech for ten years in Trenton.. I may have even been in that house at some point. I can tell you that this is TYPICAL living conditions for most of the houses in Trenton... I have been in some houses that made me want to puke. Be thankful you have insurance that can take care of this PROPERLY!
Now, what to do about these jackass teaching their kids to treat property belonging to someone else like this. This is behavior of people who haven't ever had to work for anything in life. I'm willing to bet they are Section 8 recipients. Only somebody hardworking can appreciate other's property. When you receive a check once a month to pay for your rental you don't have any emotional connection to it. It's free stuff and it's expected. When you work hard and are paycheck to paycheck you understand the feeling of loss and you "get" what it means to lose something you worked hard to achieve.
Ya? I wonder what the claims adjuster report looked like...I wonder how many violations were found. Let me get this straight, slum-lord...You believe, and you expect the viewer, your insurer, and likely a JUDGE to believe, that this family whom has lost all of THEIR furniture, appliances, personal effects, as well the place they pay to call "HOME" had *nothing* better to do than run the water to see how long it would take to drop the make-shift attic half-bath through the ceiling, onto their kitchen floor. And, in the process, wrecking everything they own, putting the lives of their family and pets at risk of exposure of disease, injury, or death. Right. Your *TENANTS* paid *RENT* in order to make this their home - and anyone can see that prior to this disaster these are decent people who kept a clean home - no easy task with small children - and made the best of the place that was a TICKING TIME BOMB OF CHEAP CONSTRUCTION just under the surface, and not only do you expect us to believe they did it on PURPOSE (with an INFANT, pets, and fairly nice and clean furniture) but because...why?? Why would they do this? You make no mention of the tenants being in arrears on their rent; you travel room to room making nasty comments about the current state/smell; yet it is obvious prior to the water damage to the structure, floors, paint, etc. there is NO evidence that the home was not well cared for...in fact, it looks as if the family even tried in vain to clean up whatever they could ( I see buckets, mops, cleaning supplies....why?? Why were they putting themselves at risk...I wonder why? Perhaps due to DELAYED response from you? Your hired landlord/property mgr? or was it the delayed spy report back to the **Staatssicherheitsdienst** by the East German **Stasi** you have set up next door? Classy. Your feigned surprise at finding ASBESTOS tucked in under your shitty drop-ceiling was a nice touch...I wonder if the renters were duly informed of the asbestos risk in their lease??? I have a feeling your claims adjuster had a good laugh and is in NO way coming after the tenants for reimbursement...(feel free to reply with proof) I notice that you make NO mention of whom they called when this disaster happened, how fast help was sent , or why the family is staying with relatives - I guess they were not offered per diem for a hotel during the time their HOME is uninhabitable. You make no mention of any of this; instead alluding to your snitch who relayed that the family was OBVIOUSLY not staying in the house for at least the past three days...DID YOU EXPECT TO FIND THE WIFE ON THE FLOOR OF THE KITCHEN WITH A LADEL & A BUCKET? PERHAPS THE BABY COULD TAKE A BATH IN A PUDDLE OF FILTHY STANDING WATER? No potential hazards in the aftermath of a flooded house, right? Electrical...disease...why are you disparaging the family for LEAVING the house? You are selling the narrative that these tenants said "F-k it." and turned on a faucet in the upstairs sink...oh, no, wait, COULDA been the shower nozzle...(not even a TUB to fill) & somehow the the following mayhem ensued: 1.) The kitchen ceiling collapses onto the breakfast table; floods kitchen 2.) a river of water cascades down two flights of carpeted stairs, 3.) floods the living room & kitchen floors even pealed the latex paint from the stairwell walls, 4.) and proceeds to fill fricken *800 sf ft basement* with 8 inches of standing water! 5.)and THEN, according your fever-dream, told the dog to shit on the stairs. Reality? The family came HOME to this disaster: A BURSTED WATER PIPE, and you know it! Whether in the wall, or under the sink, it was internally leaking behind the walls (hence the bubbled up paint in stairwells), leading to the flooding that happens when a pipe bursts within a house - the extent of damage done is indicative of cheap construction. (Anyone who has lived through this or can use their common sense knows that a running sink upstairs did not cause this degree of damage.) The dog was likely home alone when this happened, and was likely stuck finding high ground; (and, I guess, at some point the poor animal needed to go to the bathroom...) Your ugly commentary contradicts the reality of what clearly happened here. It belies a need to convince the viewer to see the renters as culprits. You keep trashing this family, who obviously suffered unmitigated horror amid a flooded house and the PRIORITY of getting their children and pets to safety...talking about "the stench" after THREE DAYS OF PUMPING OUT WATER. What, pray tell, should the tenants have done??? Are you suggesting the tenants are responsible for the shoddily constructed pipe in the wall? Or is it that your "contractors" came out of a Home Depot parking lot. More than likely, the construction for the initial remodel was done by unqualified day laborers with the cheapest of materials. It is hard to believe that this structure even passed code inspection to be rented...hmmm. Yet, you travel room to room making disparaging remarks about your renters, as though their nightmare was somehow a personal affront to YOU; never mentioning how the family dealt with this; were any of them hurt or got sick? or how long they were stuck in the flooded house to satisfy procedure so as not to break their lease... (I wonder if you, or your office, slow-walked the response to what had to have been horribly panicked calls from the family? THEIR HEALTH AND SAFETY TAKING PRIORITY OVER YOUR SHITTY WAXED PARTICLE BOARD FLOORING!!!) You feign disbelief that the tenants are not be IN THE HOME now, or during the 3 days your Home Depot handy-crew drained the standing water from the house!! Ludicrous. All the more endearing is your repeated mention of spy next door. Charming. How much credible information could be gleaned by that arrangement? The answer is: None; although, your lack of self-awareness is staggering. I am sure anyone watching this will line up to have the opportunity to be your next tenant...knowing that should a pipe burst, flooding their rented house, you will publish a video to blame & defame your renters in hopes of justifying the judgement you will invariably attempt against the family that rented this home in good faith (and most certainly a lease wherein the lessee would be held harmless in the event of a failure within the structure, plumbing, electrical, etc. requiring them to vacate the premises and the proper numbers to call if X, Y, or Z were to happen.) Your incredible contention is: This family figured, "F-K IT! Let's trash the place and leave everything behind! ...after paying the rent for the month, certainly having paid first/last + a likely security deposit...knowingly forfeiting all of it and turning their lives upside down. This somehow makes sense to you? No, of course it doesn't. Hopefully you are held to account for trying to set up your renters in order to shift blame in hopes of not incurring a huge increase in your insurance policy premiums-or worse. That is, if they even pay it...the way property & casualty insurance works is: All of those little lies on your application, and all short-cuts signed off on by your Uncle Yitzhak, the building code inspector... all are simply "misstatements" on your insurance policy... you get to enjoy those low premiums, plus you're relieved of having to pay for the proper retrofitting until you sock away enough money via high monthly rent, plus pet "deposits" & security "deposits" (not a penny of which will ever be returned, of course) then evict the tenants, having cleared enough to pay for to fix up the house legit to pass a **real** inspection... then flip it for max profit. Great deal, mazel tov! ...unless and until, of course, you actually have to make a claim on that bogus policy... a claim arising from one of those little short-cuts. Uh oh...see, once that insurance policy in "In-Force", those little "misstatements" - any statements for that matter - on your policy's declaration page become "warrants". Attempting to collect insurance money from a policy including any untruths is insurance fraud.... attempting to place fault onto your tenants will not make any difference to the statements (warrants)regarding the insured structure that may be found by the claims adjuster to have been untrue. Just one misstatement discovered will cancel the whole policy (at best); and, depending on how obvious the intent to deceive is found to be, you could be charged with fraud (at worst)...this can happen long after the insurance pays the claim. I just figured I would mention that since you are obviously a disingenuous man and a bad faith lessor.
Misha .... I had to quit reading their comment. Way too long and rambling. And made NO sense which leads me to believe that long ass comment was probably made by the tenet that destroyed this house. 🏠 😂.
"Seems" like a nice landlord! Ted Bundy was a nice guy so nice that many girls jumped in his car never to be seen alive again. Nice man. Over 40 or more dead and some never found that is why they do not know the actual number. Tell the kids beware of strangers and the truth is children are assaulted and and killed by parents and famly members more than anyone else. Four timse more deadly at home than at school (where "mass murders happen all day" right?!).
Some people just have no respect for other people's belongings. I've never understood this. You're renting a place from somebody and decide to just trash it because you can. Whenever I've rented I've always made sure that I left in as good, or better, shape than I got it. This means cleaning, mopping the floors, wiping down the counter tops, scrubbing the toilet and other things you should be doing on a regular basis. I hope you were able to get this resolved and hopefully get some money from these lowlifes.
How dare you pronounce guilt! You did not see them turn the water on did you? The tenants stuff is in an insured house and insured is the owner who gets a new house. Think it through people.
@@cravinbob What are you talking about? Do you realize how indifferent you are acting towards their landlord? That man bought this house and spent his money for new appliances, and he fixed up the property and rented it to people at a low rate. He was making money whilst helping low-income people, and those people destroyed his house. Insurance doesn't pay anywhere near the full value of a property. I know this from experience with State Farm in 2007 when our barn burned down on June 6, 2007. Our barn in Newtown, Connecticut was worth over $204,000 but we were compensated just $65,000 despite having the most expensive insurance plan available along with the most comprehensive coverage available. How about YOU think it through.
SouthwesternEagle You are exactly right. Even your insurance if you totaled a car do these people actually think they will get the total amount that they will need to pay off the loan and as much as they paid in for it. These people, the ones that are commenting horribly stating about the landlords overreacting and it’s all his fault are probably those renters being evicted and leaving the homes a total mess costing the landlords thousands of dollars to pay out of their own pockets just because they can and nothing anyone can do about it. There needs to be more strict laws protecting these landlords because most landlords are working small (retirement) and not working through companies. Some of these landlords are using the renters or tenants funds for their own future for retirement or their own families future. I am so confused as to why these things happen to landlords all the time and no new laws are NOT protecting them. I do know they are passing so many squatting laws and I am so pleased these laws do exists now. In a few years I will be purchasing a house to rent out for my families future and my tenant agreement lease will be so long it will probably take weeks to read it all. Lol. Getting great tenants into a property is like finding a unicorn. Most don’t exist these days unfortunately. Sorry for your farm..
This is a nightmare. I can say of this happened to me, I would dump my places and quit this rental thing. I wish you the best getting it covered and fixed. Thanks for posting this
You should sue them, not so much to get anything, but to get judgment! It's gonna be extremely hard for them to rent and destroy another house or apartment with a judgment on their record.
This makes me sad, I rent a apartment and I would never do this to my landlord, this looks so horrible, and I can not believe they have kids living in this environment, hopefully you will find much better people to rent that will appreciate you home.
I’m a property manager and I evicted a tenant. She left the water hose to the washer on and running for two hours. She called and told me there was a water leak. I hurried over there the water had already went in the next apartment. That made it a felony. So I got revenge. I turned the heat on 90 degrees. I left it on till the power company turned it off. She has that on her record now. I saved the floor and the walls. I had the last laugh.
@Peter Yeah the real issue is about the rent and how incredibly high it is. Also no one needs a stainless fridge when a plain white economy model would do the same job. Landlords do stuff like this for write offs. The whole scene is total bullshit accross the country.
That happened to me in CT and because Tenant was on Section 8 The Judge made me double her security security back- and I had before and after pictures. She turned on the tub - which was above the kitchen and the water run. I had put in all new appliances and remodeled a finished basement before she moved in. I never rented to Section 8 again!
Scenes like this has me hesitate to ever have rental property. I always made any rental I lived in a home for my family. I cannot comprehend doing this. I'm so sorry this happened to you. It looks like a great place to live aside from the damage. I hope the next tenants love the house as it should be loved.
have they a six months contract and then you keep putting the rent up wages are not going up. more a more people living on the streets. Government wants too rent out 16 thousands homes for scumbags who were never born here .They'll have no worries just sit back.
I feel for you. Just sucks that people are so careless. I’ve always been one to treat my rental house as if I own it and taken care of it. I just hope that the outcome was good. Stay safe.
I'm so sorry this happened to you,you look like you need a hug,I had tenants burn down my house,I was busy running from the neighborhood when I realized it was gangs,I needed all my funds to move. Then they burnt it down,i was lucky to have my life,I had no insurance, but glad to have my family's life.
If i had rented that apartment i would have taken very good care of it, It looks like it is a very nice place,,,as usual, the bad ruin it for the good....now you know why the landlords charge so much for apartments, especially for security deposits...,
This is patently false, there are more landlords now than ever. Owning property and charging people to use it is incredibly lucrative. He has insurance, he said this damage will cost him $2000 for the deductible and then insurance is covering the rest. There is a shortage of rentals because there is a shortage of housing, in part due to air bnb type listings takin up a lot of housing and also bc the companies buying up housing have realized that a low supply allows them to charge a premium for their properties. Now, if the profits are obscene, nothing is “worth” doing anymore to anyone. The corporate greed of maximizing profits every quarter at all costs has crammed us into an “efficiency” requirement that can’t justify the costs of _not_ price gouging people into an oblivion, they raise the price because they CAN, not bc they have to. It’s like the only people expected to deal with risk and setbacks are the poor.
It never ceases to amaze me how disgusting and destructive people can be to the property of someone else. Every rental property I've ever lived in I did my absolute best to keep it immaculate and keep everything in the same shape it was when I moved in. I remember once I accidentally punched a dime sized hole in a piece of drywall when I was moving and I felt so awful about it I offered to let the lady I was renting from keep my entire security deposit. She was incredibly nice though and didn't even charge me for it.
@@mysterybuyer3738because you deserve free housing? You’re the problem in this country. You aren’t owed anything, especially living off someone else’s hard work. Get a job
Several months ago I was staying at my dads and we noticed the kitchen window and blinds had condensation, we really didn't think anything of it. Anyways, later that evening my dad calls and tells me to stay at a friends. Their kitchen was flooded. Their elderly neighbor in the condo above them had left her kitchen sink on filling a bottle of water and she left for work and forgot. Her entire kitchen had to be torn out and they almost had to cut into the exterior walls of the complex. That was only about 8 hours of water running. Water damage happens so fast and is incredibly destructive. This is so EXTREME!
I don't know what to say... So sorry about what you are having to deal with. If it's any consolation, I Am SURE I am going to be an even BETTER tenant than before I watched this. Good luck, and thank GOD for INSURANCE... seriously !
Not everyone under 35 wrecks rental properties. Every 3 months rental properties generally get checked here. We ALWAYS passed inspection and got deposits back and that was in a house filled with young adults who yeah did throw parties but did so responsibly and made sure the property stayed clean even doing gardening. Not all parents lack the responsibility to make sure their children don't damage a home. You generalise into groups and assume everyone is bad, jeez.
I cannot believe how dumb you people are jesus h christ. Let hear from these "bad" tenants okay. Let us see the new house or did the owner take the dough sell the property and buy elsewhere? Ooooo.. big loss.... You ever see rivers flood? People die, entire towns gone, and this is one dumb house and we have video for what purpose? All the negative things he has got you all saying and where are they the accused?
@@Crystalheartsnerds I have same issue with my landlord too. Last four years I have nothing but hot water coming out of my cold faucet. I call I get we will look into it. In order to get cold I have to flush the toilet. Seems that the anti scold valve is fucked up and he knows it. In order to fix it you have to get in the walls to get to the source. This landlord owns 93 other properties and plus he is a REMAX realtor too. Go figure a Realtor trying to make more money and buys properties that are shitholes and fixes them in a cheap way. Then the landlord responds by stating, "is this is what you expect when you pay 380 dollars a month" But things need to be well maintained. But as I was watching this video he puts the blame on the tenants. I don't think that the tenants did this, where is the proof. I believe that it was a caused by faulty plumbing done in a cheap way. He blames the renters for damaging his appliances. Then tells TH-cam that renters insurance is the best investment. Bullshit not when you are renting a dump.
I just found your video!! I know the horrible position that this tenant left you in, I had one upstairs tenant do me the same way!!! The water and sewer bils alone were over 5000 dollars, the damage was horrendous!!!! My heart goes out to you!!!
I have a rental next door to me. The winter of 07 we had a bad freeze. I am a truck driver and not home except on weekends. When I get home I do a walk around of my house and when I got home a week after that freeze, I stated my walk a round in my detached garage or shop behind and on the lower part of my 1/4 acre lot. I opened the door and there was standing water which after a rain storm happens as the water seeps in through the cinderblock wall. No problem, but as I left the garage I headed to the north end of the house which faces the rental. The ground was mushy like walking on a bog. I got between the houses and the squishy stopped so I was standing there wondering WTF was going on when I noticed a stream of water coming out of the board he used to cover the crawl space opening at the TOP of it which was at the same level of the floor joists. I went to the meter and shut off the water which should have been done when the last tenant moved out which caused the pipes to burst. I called he city utilities and told them about it and they notified the owner whom I had never met in the 7 years we had lived there. He was lucky! No moisture damage because it was very cold but he wound up with a bill for almost 80,000+ gallons and a plumber's bill to replace a lot of pipe! How many gallons was used that month? But damn that was a shame!
@@TrueMultifamily I used to rent to a section 8, but she was really sick and died 3 years later. We though about renting it again, but after hearing stories like this we decided to sell it.
Me too 12 years the fist owner died and the other owner was so impressed that we kept 1 month ahead for 12 years through covid. When hubby died he cut our rent and let's us do what we want . He bought to make a parking lot. In 12 years we asked for nothing ! It's a beautiful home !mad respect For him
Are you sure that was not tornado damage? LOL. Who lets their kids destroy someone's property like that? That's just crazy. I literally gasped .What a beautiful house destroyed by idiots. You have amazing restraint and patience. God Bless you!
we had to replace a kitchen floor in a rental cause the renters caused a leak in the kitchen and didn't tell us about it since they were several months late paying rent. they stole all the appliance and floor heaters. also ruined brand new carpet in the living room taking apart a car engine. worst was they left 4 dead dogs in a fenced in area behind the house.
At 9:22, look at the bathroom sink closely......it doesn't appear to have an overflow. Nearly all sinks have at least one overflow hole, and all tubs do. With no overflow, yes the sink would fill and spill over. Of course, what kind of dope would leave a sink running unattended, but hey, tenants do stupid stuff.
@@ihatecats1483 People have different circumstances. As a child, I had ended up homeless even with two very responsible parents, with good stable jobs. It really depends on the state you're in, where I live rent is very, very expensive. I'm not saying people should be handed this but your condescending attitude to this is part of the reason people are homeless. They're too afraid to ask for help because people like you assume that they're lazy beggars. For you to buy your own home is cool, kudos but to assume because you had the available opportunities to get there you're better? Do you not think a homeless person with the same opportunities wouldn't take them?
Why wasn't the water draining? If you leave a sink or a bathtub running then it should be draining! And no I'm not saying thats an excuse for all of that damage but I don't understand how this can happen without some sort of plumming issues with the house.
even if you plug the drain there is still one hole near the top of the sink to drain the water, and unless it was done on purpose, they would not plug it.
Lacey Randomo That’s what I want to know! People only do this kind of thing when they’re super pissed or drug addicts. The house is too clean to be drug addicts so there may be more to the story. The pipes should’ve been able to handle this....perhaps the landlord is not a nice dude and wouldn’t fix things like he was supposed to or maybe he’s a jerk! We don’t know the whole story.
idk about bathtubs cause ive never done this but once i left the sink running with the drain plugged but there was a hole in the top but the water flowed faster than it drained so eventually it overflowed the sink and got all over the floor
The guy said in another comment that "these tenants had been paying on time every time", so it doesn't appear to be a malicious act on the tenant's part. Their property was ruined as well. But on the video, while in the bathroom he says that's where "water was left running". It's not going to be running unless someone turned it on. It's very strange that the renters were away from their home for two weeks, with children. I wonder if the renters had rental insurance? That could be an explanation. Either way it seems to be a very nice house, I mean minus that old wall paneling, I'm sure it's value went up after renovation work was done.
I live in subsadized housing and at first i was messy cause im still learning but now im used to living on my own i treat my apartment like my baby. Who would do this to a lovely home
Who witnessed the water being turned on? Anyone could have done it and even a faulty fixture but comments are all convicting the tenants. So insurance will pay and damage will be fixed and will upgrade the house better than before. It is likely this owner turned the water on just for that purpose, did anyone think of that. Arson has been done so many times by owners of property...just ask who stands to gain! No witnesses... and why were the overflows not functioning in the sink? Plugged? Insurance company gets the bill and may investigate but I say this guy did it. Rivers have flooded entire communities and this guy is whining too much and he wants his neighbors to watch the property!?!? I call bullshit. And arson is dangerous but water is easy...
firebird65)) He clearly didn’t get down to these comments. In earlier comments, he said that they had complained of slow draining but the drains were fine before. It was intentional it seems.
Was this an accident?? Because this is the reason I have renters insurance, so as a tenant, should I happen to get distracted by a phone call while running a bath, my insurance would cover the damage for the landlord. If this wasn't an accident...then it's assholes like these that make it so hard for tenants like me to get good housing. I like that fridge by the way. Yeah I'd love a new fridge since the one I have drips water in our food constantly and ruins everything if it's not tightly sealed, AND it only runs about half the time, so yeah, that's something I could really appreciate. Lucky assholes, and what a beautiful home, just right for a small but growing family starting out, like US, and boy would I love a dishwasher too, and by the way...is that a JET TUB in the bathroom? Goddamn, this shit I hate. These people and others like them don't deserve nice things. What ungreatful bastards. I'm so sorry about your home~
Clearly you were very good to those tenants, new fridge, JET TUB, etc., I mean DAMN how can they live with themselves? I posted before I watched the entire video so I didn't see the THIRD floor, man too bad I wasn't your tenant, your property would be in one piece and we'd have a much much nicer home right now, and our food wouldn't spoil overnight. Thank God you had insurance!! Let me know if you ever buy rentals here in Oregon, and good luck to you in the future~
Lisa Allen I'm thinking this was no accident. How can a person nor know there is a leak or there is running water?? On top of that they've just happened to be staying at grandmas house??? Sounds really suspicious to me.
Joe Sullivan how many people would leave absolutely EVERYTHING behind? shit flat screens, clothes, helmets, everything was left. no one does that when they intentionally want to ruin their house. still thinking a shark bite or something burst behind a wall while they just happened to be out on vacation or something. if they did plug it, which if you read the other comments by the landlord was not done. then there was no other real excuse. just sounds like a shitty accident that the landlord is blaiming on the tenants. i mean, we only hear his side. we only see the after images. and we can clearly see they left it all. shit for all we know he could have staged that house to look even worse since we cant be for sure he didnt. all we get is his side.
@@jops360 just look at the conditions the rooms are in. Trash, boxes, clothes, and crap (figuratively and literally) all over the place. Plus look at the piss stains on the bed. Now look at the appliances. Stainless steel fridge, stainless steel oven, jet tub, I mean the evidence is against the tenants. These people seem to be shit tenants. Why would the investor purposefully fuck up their own investment? It's going to cost him more than what the insurance will cover. How does that make any sense from his perspective?
Whenever I had rented in the past, I kept the house and yard spotless because while I was living there it is mine and my families home and I treated it as such. We even did minor repairs without bothering the landlord. That was a nice house, and those tenants were pigs
Lesson learned hopefully. Random checks on property, routine home maintenance, background checks, ...dog/s pissing & sh*tting everywhere, coloring/marking on walls...most could have been avoided if landlord kept an eye on his property AND lets tenants know this. The wrong type of ppl will b less likely to rent if they know the property is kept up routinely and that landlord or property manager will b around to make perodic checks. Sorry this happened to ya.
just curious, Re watch the video..... something aint making sense..... If you see the living room. and bed rooms and other rooms, The house is loaded with what looks like some items that look like they would be too valuable to deliberately damage by leaving the water on, IE Flat Panel tv's Leather Furniture, leaving family photos on the walls, Beds, other belongings.... If you can't take it with you why not sell it? some of that stuff looks like it would get decent money. at least maybe 1 or two thousand dollars for all of it.... Clothes, I have rented and had former land lords and would never leave that much stuff behind without selling some of it... It would not make sense to leave all kinds of personal belongings and furniture behind and damage it on purpose so it can't be sold. Pictures on the wall.... Family Photos Id never leave those behind. Im wondering if they deliberately vandalized it or if it is remotely possible a water pipe broke or faucet malfunctioned while the family was away for a weekend ? As a former realtor I have seen houses trashed and destroyed by Tenants and people not paying their mortgage or rent Never saw anyone leave behind anything of any value.... such as a TV or Family Photos... usually the only thing that's left behind is trash or broken chairs or rotten food..... or stinky diapers..... I have never seen any beds or major furniture items left behind. Or Major appliances they usually steal those if the land lord supplied it... or bust it up....
The next time someone asks you why it's so difficult and expensive to rent an apartment- why there's the background check they have to pay for, why the deposit is so high, why the rent is so high, why the lease terms are so inflexible, why they charge a big pet deposit... just show them this video.
For the 1 bedroom apartment we got we had to pay 1st and last (rent is $595/month) and a $1300 deposit. We weren't mad because they took a chance on us and we were so greatful!
Kisha Myers good luck getting that deposit back. no matter how much you clean they will find a way to keep every dime. 500 to paint the walls, 500 to steam the floors ect. i have yet to meet a landlord that wasnt a pos. all they want is that rent. and if you have anything wrong they take weeks to even return a call. this guy aint no saint. this shit was an accident and he is trying like hell to blame them. i mean, who leaves all their shit? ive met some shady people in the past and the one thing they all care about is that tv lol. as soon as a saw that i knew this was bs
My aunt and uncle had several rental properties in the Dallas area. They had a tenant once that, just before he was to be evicted, took several pails of housepaint and threw paint all over the walls, floors, etc. They didn't discover the damage until several days later, after it had all dried. They had the renter arrested for malicious mischief, but still the damage was done.
Yeah I was thinking the same, a lot of ppl are saying it’s on purpose but from the looks of the place they aren’t watching their kids very well and they seem to be running around trashing things. To me, it looks like the kids did that when the parents were probably downstairs and didn’t notice what had happened. This is definitely why insurance is important
I’m sitting in my own clean house watching this and ready to run out the door! Yes, people live like this and it’s so sad they do this to someone who has provided a nice place for them to live in. They just butt nasty.
Home and property owners have committed arson a million times for insurance money. A flooding is safe and make a video too to show everyone your bad tenants, poor nice man, and so thorough too. He picked the tenants and he has insurance huh... SCAM... hello, lights on, anyone home???
@@cravinbob listen dude, YOU might have had that happen to yourself or someone you know BUT that doesn’t mean this guy is suddenly committing a crime, you biased dick, this shit does happen to landlords, wether you can wrap your mind around it or not.
I am so sorry. This is devastating. I would never want to be a landlord. I am a very clean person and believe in taking excellent care of anything I own or that is entrusted me. I cannot understand people who do these things. Why??? In the name of heaven, why?????
What a shame. Whenever I rented I always treated it like I owned it and when I moved I spent 2 days washing walls, cleaning the stove and fridge. Basically the owner could rent it out again right away.
this was a plumbing issue. he claims the water was left on. but don't know which faucet was running. who turned off the water? why did he wait so long to check on the property.? why is there a big screen TV still in the living room? he never said the tenant was late on rent. so why would a tenant destroy their on property. all the kids stuff still in the house.
Yikes! GREAT video! I'm a 100% newbie and have a few follow-on questions: 1.) Did you have to allow the tenants back in the property to retrieve their (soggy) belongings? 2.) Did the agreement require them to have renters insurance or anything that could help cover this? 3.) Did you have to go through an legal eviction process despite this disaster? 4.) Does this get on their track record somehow and prevent them from destroying another property? Thanks for any feedback :)
I think the appliances can be steam cleand but dry out well before plugging back in consult a repair center i had hosed out a stereo that was nasty dirty and it worked after drying dont try without consulting authorized service center
Smart not to open that fridge, nothing good EVER comes from opening them after they've shut off for a while. Just duct tape it and haul it to the dump...
I am so sorry you had to deal with this!! :( i experienced similar situation BUT i was just a tenant. It was a building w 3 floors, 8 apartments. I lived on the 2nd floor in a big apartment. I had a young couple living on the 3rd floor, and it was 6 studio- apartments on the ground floor. One night my boyfriend and i both woke up at around 3am. We start to mention how crazy it's raining outside, and how loud it is. We shared the hallway w the neighbour upstairs, and had to walk through it to get to the bathroom. We agreed going to the restroom together. When we came out of the bedroom heading for the restroom, all we could see was water pouring down through our ceiling. I open the door and meet the boy from the couple upstairs. He seemed shocked, and stood in 3- 4 inch water that came into our apartment. The hallway was a mess. 2min later one neighbour from downstairs came running up and told he had water pouring down from the ceiling. His apartment wasnt the worse, so while waiting for the landlord he was Nice to help us remove some water. It took all night. SHORT ENDING; The couple from upstairs (the girl was crazy, we all knew that, she had spent a lot of time locked up in mental homes) - Our landlord told later she had put on the water for a dishwasher (they didnt have one). Just because..... i still wish i knew WHY. it damaged many apartments and appliances, and it took 8mths to fix. Awful awful experience. Neighbours from hell!
Really? Every sink has an overflow drain to prevent this and funny the water was on the second floor, maximum damage means maximum insurance claim and maximum new house for who....? It should be obvious to most but everyone wants to rush to judgement because why? Damn lazy renters? Yeah and probably Black or Mexican too huh. This guy screened the tenants right and why would they even answer the phone when he calls? The tenants lost their possessions not the owner...
Actually no I have not left a indoor faucet running and yes I have left the stove on but they are designed to be left on and not cause any harm. As I said Every sink has an overflow drain to prevent this and the overflow had to be plugged up purposely. If it was the plumbing under the sink that failed then it is the homeowner's fault for not hiring a pro and not checking everything out before renting it. Why would he make a video anyway? What purpose does it serve and plenty of comments have pronounced tenants guilty without hearing from them! I have done building maintenance for years including rentals and have never seen this occur. Toilets back-up, furnaces and water heaters go out or fail but plumbing installed correctly does not leak...
I can tell it was a beautiful kitchen until the tenant disaster. Hopefully you can get it all fixed through insurance. This really sucks, how did they leave water on?
Shortly after being married ,my wife and I rented a duplex for about 2 years while we saved a downpayment for the purchase of a house. When we moved out , there was an inspection of the property.
The agent said that it was cleaner than they had ever seen a unit being moved out of. Were we naive, we thought you were supposed to take care of something as if it was your own . What happened to PRIDE .
Bill I totally agree, mine were always better than before
We are the same way. We live in the home so our duty is to take care of our temple.
Some people don’t care and most people gets states funding meaning (we the hard working) pay for their rent amongst other things. These types of people only care about themselves unfortunately!!
Pride gave way to "Me Me Me".
some renters don't always have that mindset since they don't have any comprehension of ownership

Don’t ever put the best of the best in a rental. Ever.
@@CrazyDealsandSteals Luxury rentals are a legitimate market segment, but that's a niche market.
@@Tim85-y2qluxury people destroy stuff too
I hope this goes on the tenant's record so when a background check is ran, they will be rejected.
I just dont get why they would do that, when they have there belongings in the house...
I believe just the fact they got evicted goes on their record not how they left the property. Atleadt in Georgia thats how it is.
That house is a total gut job. And I would sue them. My sister sued and got her money. Also Judge Judy would love this case.
Most of the time, the tenants dont even have two nickles to rub together, not even worth pursuing in most cases.
Yes, she would love it, but the limit in her courtroom is only $5000. This house sustained at least 10X that in damages.
Good luck collecting anything from dipshit tenants. Usually don't have shit.

@@dkbullock4871 good advice except law states you can only charge 1.5 as a security deposit
You bought a house for 5 grand?
This is shocking. I’ll lived in the same rental unit for 10 years and I look after it like I own it. I’m so sorry.
I commend you for remaining so calm. I would have lost my shit.

Wow... My ex-wife is from Trenton... Is it really that bad?
@Christian Hilton Ball very sorry to hear that. I wonder what is missing to change it around?

I could never do that to anyone's property. I'm the kind of guy who if i rent a freakin car i wash it and sweep it out before i return it!
If you can locate the former tenants, you should sue and make them pay for the damages they are obviously responsible for.
I have a feeling your claims adjuster had a good laugh and is in NO way coming after the tenants for reimbursement...(feel free to reply with proof)
I notice that you make NO mention of whom they called when this disaster happened, how fast help was sent , or why the family is staying with relatives - I guess they were not offered per diem for a hotel during the time their HOME is uninhabitable.
You are selling the narrative that these tenants said "F-k it." and turned on a faucet in the upstairs sink...oh, no, wait, COULDA been the shower nozzle...(not even a TUB to fill) & somehow the the following mayhem ensued:
1.) The kitchen ceiling collapses onto the breakfast table; floods kitchen
2.) a river of water cascades down two flights of carpeted stairs,
3.) floods the living room & kitchen floors even pealed the latex paint from the stairwell walls,
4.) and proceeds to fill fricken *800 sf ft basement* with 8 inches of standing water!
(Anyone who has lived through this or can use their common sense knows that a running sink upstairs did not cause this degree of damage.)
The dog was likely home alone when this happened, and was likely stuck finding high ground; (and, I guess, at some point the poor animal needed to go to the bathroom...) Your ugly commentary contradicts the reality of what clearly happened here.
THEIR HEALTH AND SAFETY TAKING PRIORITY OVER YOUR SHITTY WAXED PARTICLE BOARD FLOORING!!!)
You feign disbelief that the tenants are not be IN THE HOME now, or during the 3 days your Home Depot handy-crew drained the standing water from the house!! Ludicrous.
All the more endearing is your repeated mention of spy next door. Charming. How much credible information could be gleaned by that arrangement? The answer is: None; although, your lack of self-awareness is staggering.
I am sure anyone watching this will line up to have the opportunity to be your next tenant...knowing that should a pipe burst, flooding their rented house, you will publish a video to blame & defame your renters in hopes of justifying the judgement you will invariably attempt against the family that rented this home in good faith (and most certainly a lease wherein the lessee would be held harmless in the event of a failure within the structure, plumbing, electrical, etc. requiring them to vacate the premises and the proper numbers to call if X, Y, or Z were to happen.)
Your incredible contention is: This family figured, "F-K IT!
You seem like you have issues., friend. And a poor grasp of reality to boot. Seek help.

*State Farm are crooks* used them before and rates are too high.
Lol. Not necessarily an issue that insurance covers.

This is the reason their is getting to be a major problem with a shortage of rental properties, no body wants to deal with this crap
All I can say is unbelievable don't understand how people can live like pigs disgusting.
Pigs are clean animals, unlike some humans.
Not everyone is a perfect kitten like you, Tracy S.
Any consequences for the tenants?
It never ceases to amaze me how disgusting and destructive people can be to the property of someone else. Every rental property I've ever lived in I did my absolute best to keep it immaculate and keep everything in the same shape it was when I moved in. I remember once I accidentally punched a dime sized hole in a piece of drywall when I was moving and I felt so awful about it I offered to let the lady I was renting from keep my entire security deposit. She was incredibly nice though and didn't even charge me for it.
Rent is a scam.

Good luck, and thank GOD for INSURANCE... seriously !
Don't matter if you have good insurance that should never have happened ‼️ complete disaster OMG
My heart goes out to you!!!
make sure you do a walk through when they are evicted
At least you got a neat coolaid guy out of it.
Accidents happen. The house looked like it was kept in good shape prior to that.
Sorry about the mess. I really hope that the insurance company goes after those "people" and recovers at least some of their money back.
It should also be a criminal offense. Willful destruction of property.
Insurance will not "Go After" anyone....never do.

we had to replace a kitchen floor in a rental cause the renters caused a leak in the kitchen and didn't tell us about it since they were several months late paying rent. they stole all the appliance and floor heaters. also ruined brand new carpet in the living room taking apart a car engine. worst was they left 4 dead dogs in a fenced in area behind the house.

They're too afraid to ask for help because people like you assume that they're lazy beggars. For you to buy your own home is cool, kudos but to assume because you had the available opportunities to get there you're better? I agree all the people who deserve nothing it get it all
Boy if this doesn't sound suspicious if I was an insurance agent I would definitely would want to look into this matter as insurance fraud
Why wasn't the water draining? If you leave a sink or a bathtub running then it should be draining! And no I'm not saying thats an excuse for all of that damage but I don't understand how this can happen without some sort of plumming issues with the house.
I saw a case like that on a local news station the people had plugged up the drains.
even if you plug the drain there is still one hole near the top of the sink to drain the water, and unless it was done on purpose, they would not plug it.
Lacey Randomo
That’s what I want to know! We don’t know the whole story.
idk about bathtubs cause ive never done this
but once i left the sink running with the drain plugged but there was a hole in the top but the water flowed faster than it drained so eventually it overflowed the sink and got all over the floor
Being a landlord takes a whole different person I realized that after taking my first renters to court
I live in subsadized housing and at first i was messy cause im still learning but now im used to living on my own i treat my apartment like my baby. Who would do this to a lovely home
YOU ARE SO CALM..I WOULD BE FRANTIC...
THANK YOU!!!! Yeah, I'm with you. I think the slumlord did this himself.
firebird65)) He clearly didn’t get down to these comments. In earlier comments, he said that they had complained of slow draining but the drains were fine before. It was intentional it seems.
What a nightmare.
Hopefully your insurance can cover some of this
Was this an accident??
Lisa Allen phone calls shouldn't last 3 days.
Wait until the asshole landlord goes on vacation!!!
Beautiful home... it’s a shame. But shit like that happens unfortunately.
Tenants are a bunch of savages. Are you going to give a good reference for the next apt?
She will never get water service in her name again until she pays that bill. I feel sorry for the landlord, if the water was in his name.
just curious, Re watch the video..... something aint making sense.....
I almost had my wife on board about buying a duplex, THEN she seen this and Im screwed again. lol

Clearly looks accidental, probably bound to happen at least once in a landlords lifetime. Good thing you had insurance.
I feel so bad for you that is a really nice house

What a shame. Whenever I rented I always treated it like I owned it and when I moved I spent 2 days washing walls, cleaning the stove and fridge. Basically the owner could rent it out again right away.

this was a plumbing issue. he claims the water was left on. but don't know which faucet was running. who turned off the water? why did he wait so long to check on the property.? why is there a big screen TV still in the living room? he never said the tenant was late on rent. so why would a tenant destroy their on property. all the kids stuff still in the house.
Ok am I the only one that caught that, there just may be asbestos in the roof ??!!!
Yikes! GREAT video! I'm a 100% newbie and have a few follow-on questions:
1.) Did you have to allow the tenants back in the property to retrieve their (soggy) belongings?
2.) Did the agreement require them to have renters insurance or anything that could help cover this?
3.) Did you have to go through an legal eviction process despite this disaster?
4.) Does this get on their track record somehow and prevent them from destroying another property?
Thanks for any feedback :)
I would not think your insurance would cover that because it was not a broken pipe they did it on purpose , did they cover it ?
I think the appliances can be steam cleand but dry out well before plugging back in consult a repair center i had hosed out a stereo that was nasty dirty and it worked after drying dont try without consulting authorized service center

Probably one of the kids left the water on... Most adults wouldn't do that. They'd trash it some other way.
@@cravinbob Most sinks but not every one.
I can tell it was a beautiful kitchen until the tenant disaster. Hopefully you can get it all fixed through insurance. This really sucks, how did they leave water on?
