    Some people are saying you are in Sonos’s pocket (a “shill”) because you never mentioned how bad these things sound when used as surrounds for non-Atmos content (and they do sound very bad). I must admit I had been a loyal subscriber but am also baffled as to how this could go unmentioned in any decent-and honest-“review.” The absence of the centre driver (and in most cases at least one side driver), is very obvious and very detrimental. One look on any AV discussion, Reddit, or the Sonos forums, and it is clear many people are very disappointed, even angry. A wave of returned speakers and a flopped launch is imminent. How indeed was their poor non-Atmos performance omitted from your review, aside from saying they aren’t equal to the Fives for stereo music?

    I agree wholeheartedly that Peter Pee's channel for Sonos products is so in depth in that once you watch his videos, you can never go back watching those hundreds of other youtubers reviews that practically read off a spec sheet, give limited actual reviewing and leave you still asking questions. Many people do unboxing video that really is a waste of time, while Peter Pee gets straight to the points, he values his viewers time and by the end of his videos most of the time you know exactly what you want to know.

    Era 100 don't give Atmos on their own, but what about combined with an Arc? They should complement the Atmos, just not provide the heights, but Arc should be enough for that - no?

    I really wish people would understand that the ERA300 is primarily designed to shine as a rear surround in your home theater setup, and the Sonos Five is still the premier product for music enjoyment. So many posts on Reddit asking if they need get rid of their Fives for ERA300, and the answer is NO! And the argument that more music is being released now that takes advantage of Atmos and Spatial channels, does not change this fact. All that means is that your theater setup will sound better when it's streaming music content than it currently does. For a stereo pair setup for music streaming only, the best option is going to be the ERA100 or the Sonos Fives.

      Sorry I disagree that spacial audio /Dolby atmos music is for home theatre setups only, it is mainly able to be decoded by home cinema. I think the era 300 as a stereo pair would be interesting to hear how much they can add to the music. Iv been quite impressed with atmos music via my 7.2.2 AVR.
      It has also been aimed at headphone listening too however in this case I find vocals to diffused.

      @shezaherrero ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Whilst I agree Sonos Fives is better for music, I completely disagree that the Era 300 was “designed” specifically for rear surrounds. The marketing material does not support that claim. Sonos is marketing this at more than 50% as a music speaker, rear surrounds are less than half of the focus for this device.

    No reviewers seem to be mentioning the fact that the front facing driver does not fire when using era 300s as rear surrounds when listening to non dolby atmos music...why? Feels like you're missing out on a lot of the potential power for regular music. A lot of people use the home theater setup to listen to music as well. Could you maybe cover the fives vs era 300 as rear surrounds and touch on music when you are not playing dolby atmos? A lot of people are interested in this use case and want the best possible rear surrounds for both theater AND MUSIC.

    Hi Peter.
    I have found that with the ERA 300 I no longer have a lateral lack of sound in surround mode and that the sound now really goes around me, i.e. without the lateral sound gaps.
    I am very enthusiastic about the ERA 300 and they harmonize perfectly with the ARC and the Sub gen 3.
    The surround experience is phenomenal.
    Anyone who can afford it financially should definitely buy the ERA 300.
    The sound difference to the One and the vife is amazing.

      Hello
      In my room (living room) the change to the one SL's is enormous
      I had a lateral hole in the sound / sound before, which is no longer there.
      It doesn't matter where I'm standing in the room, it's as if a loudspeaker is playing the sounds there.
      Our children and friends noticed this immediately.
      So far 3 people in our friendship have bought the Arc with the Sub gen 3 and now the Era 300 after watching movies and listening to music with us.
      It always depends on the room, but with the measurement according to Peter's presented style paired with mine, the sound here is overwhelming for us.
      I still stay a little away from the ARC when measuring and stand with my back to it when measuring.
      I also set up small stools to get as close to the ceiling as possible, in the direction of the height speakers for Atmos. Actually, the mobile phone is then almost on the ceiling with the microphone pointing upwards.
      All background noises such as PC are silenced, windows and doors are closed and neither a television nor the washing machine or anything else is running in the house that could affect the measurement.
      The sound is outstanding for us and a 100% enrichment.

    Hi Peter,
    Thank you for fruitful information given. I'm now on a 20 years old Bose AV20 & traditional analog speaker (Arcam - Vandersteen 2C - rest gone to graveyards already). Looking to do some upgrade with Sonos & questions are:
    1. How can I integrate the Vandersteen speaker with Sonos ecosystem? Should I eye into Amp? Can do away with current Arcam integrate amp as it is about to reach end-of-life
    2. Considering Beam 2 + Era 100/300 + Sub Mini as my ultimate end game set & "no more" but can be less (see 2.2)
    2.1 Would 300 overwhelm Beam 2? From price point aspect, 300 is more match to Arc (and 100 to Beam 2) but my view is having 300 with upward firing would do well with Beam 2
    2.2 Need sub "and" rear speaker. i.e. which combo doing a better job (a) duo-1 Beam+Sub or (b) duo-2 Beam+rear or (c) trio
    Thanks in advance

    Ya but adding the sub-mini to the 1, 100 and 300, the frequency response will similar to the 5. Sonos's DSP all produce the same curve signature and hence their signature. If you could only get a pair of speakers and can afford the 5, then get the 5 but if you already have the 1/100/300 then you can get close to the curve of the 5 with the sub-mini.

    For anyone interested here are my first impressions using a pair of Era300’s and Era100’s…
    The Era300’s are an easy sell for me if you are going to use them in a Sonos Home Theatre configuration. My immediate reaction to replacing Play5 rear speakers with Era300’s was how much better integrated they sound with the ARC sound bar. I come from a high end HiFi and cinema background but love Sonos for their fun club like room solutions and convenience around the home without speaker wires.
    Sound bars always sound like the sound is coming at me horizontally. Due to their design and often low down placement they never sound great to me for music. However with the Era300’s as rears it feels like the Sonos cinema sound stage is more cohesive front to back of the room. In this scenario the more horizontal 3D soundstage doesn’t bother me as it’s more like a well integrated 360 experience. Play Ed Sheeran’s ATMOS recordings and the sound stage is far better integrated than using Play5’s in a cinema configuration. It makes me feel like the Era300’s are what was missing from the Sonos home cinema package since the ARC was first released. Era300’s just compliment the ARC so much better than the Play5’s. To my ears they are the first truly well integrated rear speakers for Sonos home theatre.
    If I listen to the Era300’s as a stereo pair by themselves, then I am again hearing a more horizontal 3D sound stage a bit like turning the Play5’s horizontally instead of a more HiFi like soundstage when you listen to the Play5’s positioned vertically. So this is why some people may not like listening to Era300’s for music only. It’s not stereo HiFi, it’s just different. You’ll either like to get used to it or you won’t. Personally I am not a fan of the Era300’s in a stereo pair. I (currently at least) prefer a traditional stereo soundstage from a quality HiFi setup. But I think they are very good paired with the ARC in cinema configuration.
    IMO the Era100’s are NOT an upgrade from the One speaker. They are just different and depending on the environment you place them in, your preference to listen to Era100’s or One’s may differ. I had no wow factor comparing a stereo pair of Era100’s with a pair of One’s. It’s not like the sound stage was considerably deeper or more natural, which I was disappointed with for a slightly larger speaker/driver design. I expect a pair of “Move” speakers in stereo mode, will blow the Era100’s away. I can hear the Era100’s are a little richer than One’s because their sound profile is not as scooped. There is a richer midrange, but that may or may not be preferred by you, because the soundstage can be thicker to it’s detriment. For example when I tested in an open plan kitchen/diner, I thought ok I hear a difference but it’s not “better” as such, it’s just slightly different and not worth replacing One’s for in my opinion. Then I compared the Era100’s and One’s in my bedroom where the Era100’s thicker midrange was not as relaxing to listen to in that smaller space, despite my bedroom still being a decent size. It’s not a box room by any means. I used Advanced TruePlay during these listening tests and tried adjusting EQ, but I still preferred the sound signature of the One’s in my bedroom. So I think the more scooped sound profile in the One’s works better in smaller spaces where you want to reduce any bloated/flubby bass. The Era100’s are arguably preferable in a larger space due to the richer midrange. It’s not really HiFi rich to me, which means it can thicken in a marginal muddy manner. At no point did I feel a wow factor like I did swapping out Play5’s for Era300’s in a cinema configuration. I suspect in time there will be a group of customers who prefer the traditional One’s to the new Era100’s and there will remain a good market for the One’s because their sound profile turns out to be more desirable to some people in smaller environment use cases. Have fun testing for yourselves and finding your own preferences within your own homes. Cheers everyone.

    Missed the boat with no upfiring driver and Atmos capabilities on the 100. It could have sold like hotcakes as a rear surround speaker at its price range. Marking up the price out of entry level range for a bunch of folks in this configuration was a massive blunder. The play 1 ticked all the bang for buck boxes. The era 100 simply doesn’t! I also don’t understand Sonos’s recent fetish for cylinder shaped cabinets? They’re simply sacrificing base output for cosmetics. I thought they might have learned from the Arc bass output fiasco, but nope! Square shaped speaker cabinets have worked well at boosting base for forever and a day.

    Late comment obviously but I don't understand what the hell SONOS is doing or thinking! I believe most folks were waiting for SONOS to come out with rear surrounds with up firing ATMOS drivers. So what do they come out with a lousy ERA 100 that is nothing special and a jump to a expensive ERA 300 that is way overkill for what most folks can afford. Maybe their going to come out with a ERA 200 that splits the gap and what should have been released in the first place instead of the 100's.. Guess they really don't listen to the what the community wants!

    Many greetings from Germany Peter!
    I have the following home cinema setup:
    Sonos Arc, two Sonos Five as surround speakers and two Sonos Subs. Basically this is a 5.2.2 Dolby Atmos system.
    I read your report about the Era 300 with interest and wonder if it would be a good idea to replace the two Sonos Fives with two Era 300 as rear speakers?
    What is your opinion? 🤔

    Disappointed that the era 100 will not be a significant upgrade over Play:1s/Ones as surround speakers. I think the 300s are overkill, having bigger, bulkier drivers for our surrounds than our front stage looks goofy as heck. But 1s/Ones sound like a singular point. I just want a wider sound from my surrounds without needing to get big bulky ugly 300s. We need something inbetween, Era 200s?

    • @PeterPee

      Very troublesome to unpair the surrounds when you want to use them for music.

  • @navajasrs2402
    @navajasrs2402 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Guess I have a question or two, IF you have time:
    1) Did you test the surround aspects with just a single sub? I would imagine that a second sub would be the last thing on my shipping list, correct?
    2) I had asked you earlier about my large slant sloped "ceiling" (actually just the underside of my roof) in my bedroom. Do you think the 300s would be able to fill that large volume with sound, or would I be better off with the directional 5s instead?
    Awesome channel. If I were a couple thousand miles closer I'd see you at the event!

    • @PeterPee
      @PeterPee  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tested with dual sub. But I will say one sub will get you like 85% there.
      The era300 should work better than the fives as surrounds. The Atmos capabilities are amazing.

    Good stuff Peter, I am looking to get speakers for strictly music via Spotify in my office. I want a rich, immersive, detail experience. Loud volume is not my priority as I listen to my music in a lower volume in the background while I work. A lot of people have suggested that stereo sound would be the best for this use case. However,which would be the best option for me? Pair of ERA 100 vs Single ERA 300 vs Single Five.

    • @PeterPee

      Not exactly, but this will be a 5.1.4 system according to my understanding. I am trying to clarify with Sonos the exact designation of the processing on the Beam Gen 2 with Era 300. The Beam by itself, rightfully has .2 at the end for 2 channels of atmos but they are not actual physical upward firing drivers.

    Have a pair of Era 100s as surrounds on Beam gen 2. Don’t feel like I hear much from on movies and think it is even worse when playing music to the Beam & Surrounds. Is this normal ? Have tried boosting volume on Sonos settings (TV & Music) still feels hard to hear. How are the Sonos Ones as surrounds (Beam) compared to Era 100s. Seems like a lot of money to have the Era 100s as surrounds when I can’t distinguish them adding a fuller sound on TV/Movie watching or especially with music. Please let me know if I have set something up incorrectly or if this weak sound is what you get when you use Era 100s or Ones as surround speakers with Beam Gen 2. Thanks

    I would have loved the era 100s with upfiring drivers. Don’t get me wrong I would buy the 300s in a heartbeat. Except for that the space where my one surround is is behind a door(I close the door for movies so no issue) but there is no way I can fit an era 300 in the same space on that side. Gutted. Failing that I would have to put them too close together pretty much right behind me. Which I’m not sure about.

    I thought Dolby Atmos 5.1 can be achieved by adding any Sonos components (sounds bars L-C-R speakers) and 2 of any other Sonons speakers, along with a Sonos subwoofer? Doesn't this make up the 6 piece set for 5.1? Why will the ones not work for Dolby Atmos? Or the new ERA 100s for that matter?

  • @CarlJacobsen
    @CarlJacobsen ปีที่แล้ว

    Rest of the review is informative, but your frequency response curve comparing the two speakers is hilarious. You conclude that the 300 is louder across the board - uh, that’s not how you do frequency response. You don’t set them to the same volume number setting in the app, you’re supposed to adjust the volume setting per-speaker so that they produce the same overall volume in the room, ideally using a sound meter.
    This would overlay the two response curves on each other properly, and make the differences more apparent (the 300 has a slight bump in the lower bass - hard to characterize with no numbers on the x-axis, and stays closer to flat through most of the curve but with a bump in the midrange and a pronounced bump in the upper treble). As it’s shown, with one curve entirely above the other, it just makes me laugh. People don’t care how it sounds “at volume 23” (or any other number”, they’ll simply raise or lower the volume number a bit to get the sound they prefer.
    It has been shown many times, that when you compare speakers (say, auditioning speakers and trying to decide which pair of speakers from differing brands sound best to you), that if they’re not set to the exact same volume (actual volume in the room, not volume number in an app), people will invariably think the slightly louder speaker sounds better.
