  • {586} How To Measure Maximum Output Current of SMPS and Peak Output Power. How To Determine Maximum Output Power of SMPS, How To Measure Output Current of SMPS. when you want to know the maximum power handling capability of smps, we have to measure the output current and voltage. to measure current i connected 6.8 ohm 20 watt resistance and verified the voltage. i added one be one resistance of same value in parallel. when the output voltage started to drop and fluctuation, that is the maximum output current
    i connected 14 resistors of 6.8 ohm 20 watt in parallel, so RT is 6.81/14= 0.485 ohm
    total voltage= 12 volt
    Total current= 12V/ 0.485 Ohm = 24.74 Amper
    Total Power output = VxI = 12*24.74 = 296.90 Watt
    or we can find current in other way
    Voltage = 12 volt
    current drawn by each resistance = 12/6.81 = 1.762 amper
    14 resistance in parallel =1.762 Amper x14= 24.7 Ampere

    Sir, thank you very much.
    I need your support to find a problem in smps model: aps150rf-d.
    the o/p 24vdc is good and the fan voltage is 10.5v, when connect the fan socket the fan voltage drops to 3.6v but 24v still good and the indectation Led light goes down.
    I'm change the o/p capacitors but still the problem the same

    You can also make a nice resistor out of pencil lead... I have been experimenting with it recently and it actually nice, but be careful it can glow hot

E.g 48vdc input, o/p 12v/10A isolation cccv driver for charging application, this we can design flyback or forward or push pull or half bridge. But how to select for topology for start up.     salam sir,i was working on laptop adapter and was increasing its voltage by removing one of the two resistor from tl431 refrence pen and put a variable resistor.when i was increaing and decreasing voltage,suddenly i got shock from variable resistor.can you explain how this happen.thanks

    Sir in one of the you tube video uploaded by a blogger in which I saw he is measuring current of SMPS by connecting multimeter set in 10a and com point and then applying parallelely to the SMPS output.

      that is not a good method
      he is using multimeter as a load, while multimeter is not a load. it is a test instrument
      because in multimeter, there is a fast blow fuse, if we connect to high current source, immidiately it will damage
      it must be connected in series with any load

    Asalam alakum sir mere pass ek 6 volt battery Ka smps charger ata ha .us ke output nhi aa rha ha. Koi bhi component short nhi ha. Thori der bad power transistor heat hota ha.halanki transistor bhi thik ha .kia problem ho skta ha.please zaror bataye..

      no, when the power supply looses it's load regulation that is most of the time 0.5 percent of the nominal voltage
      that peak point is considered as Pout Maximum
      at peak voltage and peak current we have to calculate

      @@HaseebElectronics when the power supply output loses regulation it means the feed back circuit reached its maximum adjustable point that puts the power switching device on primary side at critical operating point
      if it's a low quality design it won't last long until it fails
      (without input DC pfc circuit at primary side, no thermal shutdown circuit , no over current protection shutdown circuit.
      when output start losing 10% of it's output nominal voltage this point is its maximum safe power to draw.
