      Huge pet peeve is when people say the weight somebody lifted is "weak" because they can lift more, completely disregarding whether the person is new or learning new things, always got on my nerves when i heard that.

I have no one else to promote me to try to get sponsors so I have to do it myself. In reality I am a pretty humble guy other than the powerlifting. The last 30 years of my life has been devoted to helping terminally ill people and their families. The transition from life to death is one of the biggest stages in a person's life and as a therapist at Hospice that has been my life's work. Helping terminally ill people and helping bereaved people. I am proud that I don't just sit on my ass criticizing people but spend 2-3 hours a day working my ass off at a gym to try to improve myself. I even find a gym to train at on vacations. Most of the videos on youtube are a way of bragging by showing people what you do. Competitions are a way of bragging to show other people what you have accomplished. I think it’s better to have leveraged in the extremities because the advantage those leveraged bring to one lift, disadvantage another, but give a person more potential for a record in a particular lift. Compare that to someone with very good at all, but the best at non leveraged, who can likely accelerate at the total, but are less likely to get a record in a particular lift.

  • @fullglorywr8322
    @fullglorywr8322 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would say a few of the pet peeves I have is when I meet new people who all of a sudden claim that they can lift an insane amount of weight in a particular lift, when I can already tell they couldn’t even come close if they tried. Had some dude bring up the fact that his deadlift is 400 pounds when judging by his build, frame and muscular appearance wasn’t being honest. My deadlift is 385lbs and I admit I have a narrow frame, but I’m also very vascular and you can see my muscular build at least a little.
    Another is that crazy arch of the back powerlifting technique. I know I said it, but there’s a reason why I dislike it so much. When you reduce the range of motion so much so that you only have to lower it like 5 inches and then it touches your chest is to me cheating. That’s not true strength. True strength to me is a decent arch to get leverage and reduce shoulder injury but still complete a full range of motion of the heavy weight all the way down to your chest and up proving that you’re that strong.

    I never understand why anyone makes negative comments about the way someone trains. I mean trying to help someone improve is always great, but just putting people down because they aren't doing it "the right way" or whatever never made sense to me. Just be grateful that they're trying to be fit or healthy or just a part of the industry in any kind of way. No one has all the answers and it's a hell of a lot easier to just not pick up the weights to begin with, right? So people need to just be cool about all of it. It's a sport, powerlifting, cross fit, strongman or whatever, that requires a great deal of suffering as it is anyway, without the added discouraging negativity. As an American, I'm always seeing people who are just weak, tired and out of shape, or just plain old beat down, it's like they're sick and dying out there. For God's sake man, if they're trying, help their ass out! Just be kind, the road ahead is hard enough as it is. A pat on the back moves a man forward, a slap in the face only turns him around.

    The only reason why the Wilks is useless, is because it is inaccurate. The formula is inherently flawed. I tried mentioning that over the past year, especially that one point when it was a hot topic all over instagram. Organizers are too lazy though to care. So of course the big guys are at a disadvantage with wilks, so I would complain too haha.
    If they used a formula similar to the one they use for olympic weightlifting, which actually has the correct stipulations for a coefficient to be compared, then you could accurately compare totals.
    If you notice, all the highest wilks totals are from females. Somehow they think that they are the strongest lb for lb because of it.
    Yet if you go to weightlifting, the highest sinclair total (the "wilks" for weightlifting) is 500 for men, and 364 for women. It is a consistent formula that can actually be compared.

    • @ryanturner8577
      @ryanturner8577 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I just looked it up.
      It's just a more accurate Wilks. The formula is useless for comparison.
      Stefi Cohen has a higher IPF formula number than Larry Wheels. The formula only accounts for weight: Total.
      That's it. You can't compare it to anything else. The taller bigger guys will always have lower Wilks/IPF numbers because of this. Strength is relative to more factors than just bodyweight. You will never have a competitive 181lb guy that is 6ft4.
      You can't just create something to spit out a number. So Let's say I am larry wheels. My IPF number is 855.68 at 275lbs with a total of 2,275. The best in the world in 275lb weight class. Hey look there is stefi cohen. Her IPF number is 979.78 with a bodyweight of 123lbs totaling 1,157lb.
      So apparently She is way better than Larry Wheels. By 124pts actually.
      Funny how it doesn't even take into account that the diminishing returns of strength. This formula is set to the idea that strength is limitless so the formula calculates this number by comparing these two numbers.
      In math, we set the stipulations and parameters to spit out what we want. Math has no idea what these numbers mean. They don't know about fame size, height, etc in terms of relativity to strength. The relationship between size and strength isn't constant.
      This is why the sinclair coefficient is superior. Because it compares your bodyweight and totatl to the current world record in YOUR WEIGHT CLASS. Now you have an extra paramater that accurately shows your total within your weight class, so you can then compare to other weight classes. This shows that the totals and strength has a current limit besides an endless limitless existence like WIlks/IPF.
      Ridiculous actually.

    People who call out Sumo pullers are just insecure with their own pulling ability.
    Personally, I am SIGNIFICANTLY stronger conventional, and find sumo to be awkward and damn near painful on my hip flexors.
    With that being said, people who say sumo is easier seem to never pull sumo, so they discredit themselves immediately on that argument. The only individuals who can say Sumo is easy, are those who excel at it.
    Point is, people are always going to pull whichever way is more comfortable for them, and there is no easier / better style.

    Talking about the bad federations and scummy records, that 500kg half-squat, the tens of “world record” deadlifts. It’s all too true and really unfortunate, no idea how that could be reasonably fixed. Powerlifting just isn’t streamlined very well.

  • @zTorrentiaLzzz

    I see your point. What about the people who want to find a sport which is purely a test of strength and powerlifting is the closest thing to that?
    I wanted to join powerlifting but I see already that people's flexibility or sympathy for sumo is just as important as strength

    I really don't buy the last point, in that all leverages even out in the end through the total. I would love for somebody to explain to me how long femurs/short torso, as a percentage of body height, is NOT a disadvantage overall. It makes squats so much more difficult and conventional DL harder as you are pulling with a torso more parallel to the ground and hence 'stiff-legging' it up. This is simply a mechanically weak position. This is why Cailer benefits from a sumo stance, get the longer legs out the way and let the short torso stay more upright.
    That said, I agree with his overall point, don't compare yourself to people with other leverages but only to yesterday's you.

    People hate on sumo, but why don't people hate on lowbar Vs highbar squats ? It's the same principle right, you modify your technique to make the lift somewhat easier just as you do with sumo

      @nickcorona3966 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It isn't the same principle at all. Sumo deadlift allows most to pull more weight because it decreases the effective range of motion. Low bar squat allows you to lift more weight because the smaller back angle allows you to involve more musculature to therefore lift more weight.

    I don't disrepect anything, I just wanna lift my own way and that is as raw as possible to not to be reliant on equipment. Every single Equipment feels awkward to me and i am even weaker with straps on deadlift or wide grip bench. I even use narrow grip on overhead press cause it naturally feels the best to me. I'm not into powerlifting meets cause I don't see a point for me to be judged after the criteria of others and i didn't want to limit myself strictly to the borders others set up. In fact I don't even like to benchpress nor to barbell deadlift. But I like strength, power and fast overcoming movements in General, in particular to overhead press, picking up heavy stones or farmers deadlift, sometimes walk with it, pushing sledges, pulling sledges, weight carrying and sometimes squat. I also like some fitness movements, aswell as bodybuilding and Weightlifting movements at some time. My favorite strength athlete was the mighty atom. I can highly identify with what he or other very vintage strength athletes did ^^ As a 5y old kid i began to train for cars riding above my Stomach by doing weighted crunches or just let alot of weight sit on my Belly, i was so fascinated by this hardiness xD

Obviously this is a joke, but it was funny at the time especially considering it was the first 402 I’ve ever hit.

    About Wilks score and underestimating it... Lifters between 90 and 100 kg bw can do that argument, SHW can't. Wilks score is not only based on relative strength, but on statistics and old records, too.
    Back in the day, competitors on that gap (90-110) had the best records, and Wilks formula decrases their qualifications because of that, while gives extra points to SHW and lighter competitors, just for compensate and be "fair".
    Actually, you, Dan Green, Belkin, Oak and Tom Martin are on that "handicaped" gap haha.
