    Loved the video, Shawn! We're pretty proud of our Saw Vise. A lot of thought went into these, and we always love to hear they're making a positive difference in people's craft. May your saws live long and prosper!

    I always enjoy your videos. I have been doing the switch from a DIY power tools + pocket holes to more working with the wood with hand tools and traditional joinery. I am really enjoying the process and skills involved when doing this way. Thanks for all your effort.

    I now look at my saws in a new light. I never realised that they were such a precision instrument or could be adjusted to suit different needs. Thank you very much Shawn.

    Amazing instruction from a pro! I've now learned all I need to know about sharpening saws - I won't! A.ctually tried once a long time ago, and was moderately successful , but that was with absolutely no help knowing what I should have been doing. I think I could, now, if I had to, with what I've learned. Thanks for your educational series!

    I find the magnifying glasses, that looks like something a jeweller would use works well.
    The fat sharpies are fantastic for the saws too
    As for the rest of the knowledge you have passed on to us, thank you so much for that.
    I never thought about modifying the handle, what a eureka moment

    i like that some people still appreciate working with hand tools. Don't get me wrong though - I LOVE power tools, but it's good to still remember how ito use a hand saw, plane and other common hand tools. You don't always need to get out the electric

    Thanks So Much! NICE File guide & All those Great 'Points'! just doing yard work [or so], nothing precision - yet. more yrs of practice, Correct process helps. Confusion is my issue, my bad or just slow, but i figured it out. @ 42:00 You Changed the 'Flame' angle of File, Not flipping saw around. Much better!

    Good lesson. Have you ever tried using Dykem/machinists blueing instead of the sharpie? Also a good tip for us oldsters is to suck it up and go the the big box pharmacy and get the strongest reading glasses you can stand for sharpening and other fine tasks. Thanks for sharing.

      I use a concentrated wood stain that you usually mix with meths, just combine a few drops with a tiny bit of shellac, brush on and you are good to go. The first test cut after sharpening and its gone. Works for me!

    Triangular needle files are readily available from jeweler suppliers. I don't know about the quality for filing steel saws, but they work fine for sterling silver and gold.

    • @wortheffort
      @wortheffort  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quality is the issue as they have to work on hard steel.

    Shawn, I was always taught that files cut on the forward stroke, by installing it with the tip in the gauge aren't you then cutting backwards? Got some excellent info from the video, thanks for taking the time to do it.

    • @wortheffort
      @wortheffort  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya, it's a little gentler, almost like burnishing, going the other way and on these small teeth I like the result. Notice I switched on the bigger teeth.

    Probably file is meant to cut in the push stroke: the pointed end is the first to touch the gulleth, after that we push and...repeat as needed. Is there a deliberate reason to use a file the other way?

    • @wortheffort
      @wortheffort  ปีที่แล้ว

      If I was filing the wrong way it wouldn't of been cutting the steel. And yet the tiny filings and end results shows a saw cut....

    Brother i would say that what i saw you doing in this video is a fluke as i give you the benefit of knowing what you are doing but your file was mounted backwards in your jig you were dragging the teeth of the file and not cutting anything ????just saying it's not conducive too your good image on you tube bit still a good informative video but that part was bad really bad
