"Blue eyed soul". Best live performance ever ... no auto tune, no re-takes, no tricks .. just pure God given talent. He's a countertenor ... range from baritone to high soprano.
The guys were in a 5 member group called the Paramours. A few black Marines from the El Toro Marine base in Orange county California heard there were white guys singing R&B in the club Jon's Black Derby in Santa Ana. They went to check them out and loved them. On weekends, during the entire time the guys were at the club, the Marines would drop by. One especially would shout out that's righteous, brothers after numbers he liked. When encountering them coming and going, he would say things like how ya doing righteous brothers. When Bobby and Bill recorded Little Latin Lupe Lu without the rest of the group, they needed a name. Bobby suggested they use the name the Marines were calling them. And so, the Righteous Brothers were born. (A total aside: Orange county has a very small black population. It's possible those Marines were the only black people in audience. I only mention this because you said the audience was predominantly black.)
Song originally released 10 years before this TV broadcast in a 1955 PRISON MOVIE called "Unchained." This tune was the love melody in "Unchained," hence its title. Been covered scores of times, but Bobby's has been called the BEST by so very many folks. Received new attention during the late 1960s and early '70s due to so many young couples separated and dispersed to Vietnam and other military hotspots around the world.
Bobby Hatfield's Mother was in the audience of this performance, first time watching her boy live in a studio audience... makes you melt even more seeing his slight nervousness. Awwwwwww 🥰
I'm 60, so I have heard this song throughout my life. It was great to watch you guys react to such an incredible song. That man did each part of that song perfectly, in front of a live audience, and without any of these new devices to alter the voice. Just raw talent! But, raw talent is how all of the groups back then were.
68 and their on the Andy Williams show, first song 1962, you've lost that loving feeling on top gun and ghost all the songs of are era is played in movies
Did you see you relax he is when he hit those high notes?? This is live, his parents was there, he had a cold and on top of that he has stage fright…….❤❤❤❤❤❤. Simply Amazing….
I am a Boomer . I am so glad I grew up to listen to the best songs of rock and pop in history. Nobody outdoes Bobby in this performance. He set The bar so high. I have never heard anyone equal it in any song. There are a lot that came close to the bar but None is better than Bobby. He earned the gold medal of all time for male singers.
You just KNOW that a "brother" gave them the name "Righteous Brothers"!! They have SO MUCH SOUL in their voices!! So many people think that they were black!! I think that's awesome because now that so many people are reacting to their videos and seeing that they are white with "soul" is really connecting people in a way that they NEVER KNEW THEY WERE CONNECTED!! It just goes to show you, COLOR DOESN'T MATTER - WHAT'S INSIDE US MATTERS!! I am white, and I have come to LOVE listening to these young reactors, and I feel so connected to them and have even come to know new black artists that I never knew bafore!! I am LOVING THIS MUSICAL JOURNEY!!❤❤❤
I'm so glad I wasn't alone in thinking that the Righteous Brothers were black hahahaha. The first time I saw video of them, I had that same shocked look on my face.
I’m 77 & graduated from high school in 1964. Most people in the 60’s thought the “Righteous Bros were black until their first Album came out with their pictures on it.
Remember when my older brother getting out of the Army, coming home and he had a real to real tale player( 1967) and the Righteous Brothers were on the tape, he played it all the time, he liked their music, when he passed away ( 2014) I had Ebb Tide, played at his funeral…RIP, my dearest brother
Guys one of the greatest songs and one of the greatest performances. Everyone thought they were black singers including me and I grew up when they were performing. I was shocked when I saw the first video of them performing like 50 years ago. That's why they are called "blue-eyed soul" meaning white soul singers. Your reaction was great.
This was done with pure talent before a live audience. One take, no editing. Bobby Hatfield did this song as a solo. The duo consisted of Bill Medley ( the skinny one ) and Bobby Hatfield. The song was first performed in 1955 in the movie "Unchained". Through the years more than 250 artist have tried to duplicate and match Bobby Hatfield's performance, including Elvis Presley. This was known as Blue Eyed Soul music. I was a junior in high when this song came out in 1965.
The two guys were entertaining Marines in the south during the Viet Nam War and the Marines yelled at them they were “righteous.” It stuck and they were amazing. Bobby Hatfield styled himself after Sam Cooke and it’s so noticeable. Bobby had a counter tenor voice and Bill a baritone voice. Together magic. Now it’s time for “Soul and Inspiration.”
One of the best lov songs ever sung ! Legend , still get goosebumps hearin it every. single. time. Appreciate y’all givin it a listen & ❤it . RIL Bobby
These guys are 24 years old at the time. Both excellent singers and entertainers. They are Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley. Bobby had many solos and you have to hear "Summertime" and also "Ebb Tide". Summertime will absolutely blow you away. His vocals are amazing.
Bobby Hatfield had a very rare voice called a countertenor. It's the equivalent of a high soprano. He had a 4.5 to 5 octave range. He'd probably still be alive today if not for having a cocaine induced heart attack in his sleep in 2003.
I absolutely love this. It shows how the present generation has missed out on the music of the past and their reaction to it. A song and performance like this is timeless. My Mum was a young woman when this came out and has loved it all her life, as have I. You guys are great and am glad you never missed out on this. Enjoy their others x
Reaction channels like this one without intending to are pivotal in terms dissipating racism/classism - music turns the heart ♥️ and touches the soul-👵🏽✌🏾🦅🔥🦅💚 - Love the South!
The song was originally written in the 1930's for a movie about men in prison. Hence the references to time going by so slowly. The Righteous Brothers resurrected it in 1965 and it became a classic. Then in 1990 it was in the movie Ghost with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore and the song became a mega hit again. It's a classic, timeless song and so happy to see new generations hearing it for the first time. I grew up hearing this song and always loved it.
Think about it this song is almost 60 years old and it still sounds as good as it does when it was released no auto-tune no foul language no half naked girls just honest Talent😊😊😊
Welcome to the club friends, I was 16 when this was performed on the Andy Williams TV show. As teenagers, as much as we loved the Righteous Brothers, we didn't realize what we had then. There was so much going on with new bands, (Beatles, etc etc), but through the years the RB have secured a special place in our hearts. Looking back, we were blessed, they were the real deal.
I like these reaction videos when they see and hear this performance for the first time. How good this song is really hits you right in the face doesn't it. Then you think to yourself, "Where the hell have I been???".
They were called Blue Eyed Soul and every colour women were in love with their voices. I grew up to this. Take a trip and see what else they can do. This was recorded by over 670 artists world wide including Elvis. No one could take it from Bobby. He owns it. Many think they are black these days especially if you watch them sing You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling because they start singing in the dark. There have been some interesting reactions from black reactors to that one and they are funny. It doesn’t matter what colour any of us are, they had the talent and in Australia back then Righteous Brother wasn’t a saying. Unless you meant them. I was taught we are all the same and so were my children. My son is in a big magazine this month with his wife for what they have given the black people in our Country. He gets to go home from work every 2 months for a week to see his family because he has worked as the emergency medical person on their missions in the Outback which is a desert for over 20 years. He grew up with our first people and he gives them everything he has. He respects them and he loves them, he gets the same back from them. We don’t see black and white, we see people.
The Righteous Brothers history. Bobby and Bill were in The Paramours together in 1962. They both grew up on rhythm and blues with Little Richard being one of their favorites. Black Marines from El Toro Marine Base would come to watch them sing the blues and they were the ones who called them The Righteous Brothers. When Bobby and Bill became a duo and had recorded their first record they needed a name so they used what the Marines had been calling them. They opened for The Beatles on their first American tour. Bobby and Bill sang together off and on for 41 years until Bobby's death in 2003. They were one of the best duos of all time and they both were wonderful soloist too. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March of 2003 and Bobby passed away in November 2003.
It is the ending of this video that always gets me. That little smile ❤and like it was totally effortless. I never tire of watching reactions to this performance.❤
Their own THE ANDY WILLIAMS SHOW, R& B all my life, motown soul train, & white and almost 70, best music in the world, it have soul, and only music to dance to and body moves to the rhythm, SISTER FROM ANOTHER MOTHER ❤
My Generation. Girls at dances in the sixties thought he was singing to them, and they'd hold us so tight. Later in Nam this became an anthem about bein' away from home. "...And Time goes by so slowly ...and time can do so much ...are you still mine?" You'd hear it comin' from one of the hootches at night... and lose it. Welcome Home Brothers 589th Combat Engineers Song Pha, Republic of Vietnam 1970
Thank you! I've been watching many of these reactions on TH-cam and I kept thinking how it must have been a Viet Nam war anthem. It makes too much sense for it not to be. One female reactor here said her knees were shaking! lol My God but Bobby could sing! and Bill was also fantastic. I love his dry wit. Hilarious!
Many of the songs of this era we turned into 'our' songs. CCR holds a special place in our hearts. So cool that you see where I'm comin' from... Thank You.@@thepabs911
Definitely, dive down the Righteous Brothers rabbit-hole. You will enjoy Bill's baritone, too - "I Just Want To Make Love To You" is righteous, indeed! Thanks for keeping "my" music alive for today's and future generations ❤
One of the best live performances of all time considering it was 50 years ago with that sound quality and he didn't have a vocal track playing behind him or a ear piece to keep I'm on beat it was pure talent and that's coming from more of a mid 90's brotha lynch type of rap guy
This was my first time sitting in with you fellas, thank you for allowing me to do that! I enjoyed the time I spent here with you, so while I was here I subscribed and left a like for you! Continued good luck with your channel it's a fun place to hang out for awhile each day I would think, so I'll be back! Deb
All I can tell you is that you are in for a treat and a lot of surprises with the incomparable talents of the Righteous Brothers. There will be some good love songs, Soul music where they just let it rip, and the jazzier, "My Babe". Stay mostly with the old black and white unedited versions from the weekly Shindig Show when they are available. Of course there will be video from other shows like this video from the Andy Williams Show.
Thanks for the reaction guys, Bobbys voice was phenomenal and he had natural talent. Can you please react to Australian legend John Farnham singing “help” live with the Melbourne Symphony orchestra live 1989, we call him the voice down under
Their biggest hit where they both sing is "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling." BMI ranked as radio's most requested and played song of the 20th century. I've read that "Unchained Melody" has been covered by about 500 artists. Many people think this particular version from the 1965 Andy Williams show is the best of them all. Bobby's version of that song was the background music for a love scene in the movie "Ghost", released in 1990. In an interview Bill Medley said the reaction to the song in the movie was so good that he convinced the record company rerelease the album. Some time later he received a large box full of platinum records from every COUNTRY where the album sold more than 1 million copies. Those guys are timeless.
Bill received those records for "I've Had the Time of My Life with Jennifer Warnes from Dirty Dancing! In 1990 the record company wasn't going to initially release Unchained Melody, so Bobby went in the recording studio and recorded a new version! Then the record company released the 1965 version and the Righteous Brothers became the only artists so far to have two versions of the same song in the top 20 at the same time!
Hey boys it's a fan from Toronto who loves your content and honestly you have to react to another Righteous Brothers song and it's even better than this one and it's called You Lost That Loving Feeling and I just found out that in the 20th century on television and radio this was the most played song and that doesn't include any streaming platforms😊 I haven't watched your reaction yet but I know you're going to love it but You've Lost That Loving Feeling is on a whole other level of good😊😊😊
Now listen to Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley song “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling”. Hear them sing “You’ll Never Walk” on the Ed Sullivan Show. Hear Bobby do “Summertime” and Bill’s “I Just Want To Make Love To You”. There debut song was “Little Latin Lupe Lu”.
He sang that, WITH A COLD! Another great performance, Queen Live Aid… Freddie Mercury (lead singer) had a THROAT INFECTION (was advised by doctors NOT to sing or perform) while performing! Considered one of the BEST live performances to this day!
Nice reaction guys. You need to react to more of The Righteous Brothers songs. Bobby Hatfield "Summertime" live performance 1965. Bobby will blow your mind with his soulful vocals. His vocal range and control is phenomenal. Here are a few more you need to hear. You'll Never Walk Alone Soul and Inspiration Rock and Roll Heaven
Perfect!! Beautiful song , thank you for reacting!! Imagine no studio, no extra added, no dubbing, all pure voice!! check out " You've lost that loving Feeling"
Now you need to hear the two of them together. Check out their incredible song "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" at: th-cam.com/video/uOnYY9Mw2Fg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=WeHHzhOAIrcG5lO8
The incomparable counter tenor voice of the late great Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. Performed (Live) 59 years ago back in 1965 on the NBC Andy Williams Show. This song was written for the 1955 prison movie "Unchained." It was written by multi award winning music composer Alex North with Lyrics by Hy Zaret. Ten years after it came out. Bobby Hatfield and the NBC Studio Orchestra gave a performance of "Unchained Melody" that has not been matched since. This version was so good that every orchestra and singer has used this version ever since. It has become the quintessential version of them all. Great reaction fellas. It was a Black Marine from the El Toro US Marine Base in Orange County in Southern California who yell out to them- "That's Righteous Brother." And the rest as they say is history.
A little correction, it was El Toro Marine base in Orange county, as was the club. Alex North loved what Bobby did with his melody. They got to spend time together years later. Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall.

Look for Bobby Hatfield Summertime 1965. You may not recover. This man had an unparalleled voice. ❤
"You've lost that lovin feeling" should be your next one from these great guys. Took me back a few years. Thanks, guys.
Thanks for listening
Notice during the start how nervous Bobby was catching his breath, but when the song started, LEGEND.
I was wondering about that.
Me too. He seemed nervous but then he started to sing. Wow! @@janethards16
I think I read that his mother was in the audience, hence the reaction at the start.
He had an upper respiratory infection. This made him short of breath
One of those timeless classics

1965 & this group still & always will be a musical treasure. My generation was spoiled was wonderful music.
The voice of an Angel! ❤
You should react to them singing "Night Time Is the Right time" with the blossoms. THAT song blew me clean to the moon!!
Bill Medley is phenomenal in that one!
If you want check out more Blue-Eyed Soul try something like Sara Smile by Hall & Oates.
You got to do the "You've lost that loving feeling"
song they both sing in that one and it's great.
Bobby on that Summertime live version is HANDS DOWN the best shit ive ever heard
As I remember the story, it was a black guy who shouted it. It's such a great story. ❤
One of the best live performances of all time considering it was 50 years ago with that sound quality and he didn't have a vocal track playing behind him or a ear piece to keep I'm on beat it was pure talent and that's coming from more of a mid 90's brotha lynch type of rap guy
Beautiful song beautiful boys just amazing!!!!!!!!!
WOW!!!!!!!! Now this generation, our generation we have to admit this is definitely talent.👍👍💙💚❤️🩵
This was my first time sitting in with you fellas, thank you for allowing me to do that! I enjoyed the time I spent here with you, so while I was here I subscribed and left a like for you! Continued good luck with your channel it's a fun place to hang out for awhile each day I would think, so I'll be back!
Deb
This is an example of what we seniors called “ blue eyed soul” back in our day !
PURE VOCALS... IMAGINE THAT
❣️🤗❣️
100% live and just pure talent!
You should listen to You lost that loving feeling. Both of them sing
MAGNIFICENT!!!!!❤❤❤
He sang that, WITH A COLD! Another great performance, Queen Live Aid… Freddie Mercury (lead singer) had a THROAT INFECTION (was advised by doctors NOT to sing or perform) while performing! Considered one of the BEST live performances to this day!
I love it so much, he didn't even try! So easy for him yet not for anyone else❤
No auto tune. Pure talent. It was written in the 50's for a movie called Unchained about a man in prison who longs for his sweetie.
Nice reaction guys. You need to react to more of The Righteous Brothers songs. Bobby Hatfield "Summertime" live performance 1965. Bobby will blow your mind with his soulful vocals. His vocal range and control is phenomenal.
Here are a few more you need to hear.

Perfect!! Beautiful song , thank you for reacting!! Imagine no studio, no extra added, no dubbing, all pure voice!! check out " You've lost that loving Feeling"
"Down South" in their case was Southern California, where they're from. But you're right; it was a couple of brothas in the audience.
Don't get no better. Iconic.❤
I’ve just discovered you guys. Love your reactions. You are both adorable.❤
Appreciate the comment
This song was featured in the movie "Ghost" during the pottery scene.
Now you need to hear the two of them together. Check out their incredible song "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" at: th-cam.com/video/uOnYY9Mw2Fg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=WeHHzhOAIrcG5lO8
You guy's just discovered blue eyed soul!
Gives me chills every time i hear it. Love your reaction to it.
Great reaction, I believe they called it blue eyed soul back in the day. It doesn’t matter though, just incredible vocals that speak to everyone.
Thank you. I stand corrected. I will edit it and make the correction.@@Aurora-tp3dy
They called this sound "Blue Eyed Soul" back in the day.
You need to check out some more ,the other guy has an incredible voice too.
