    Judging by all the comments, I think it’s the rider that’s being “naughty” not the horse!

    • @AL-lz1hb
      @AL-lz1hb ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes indeed. This rider is an utter disgrace and the officers watching are worse. The rider should have been corrected the first time he did it. Kicking with spurs is outrageous! And so upsetting to see. Spurs are a rotton horrid aid but it allows for the rider to give invisible instruction to the horse. If you can see use of force by the rider, the horse is really being hurt.

    It appears to me that all the horses are being bothered by the type of bits that are being used. The rearing of all their heads constantly tells me they are uncomfortable with their bits.

      Also need to be more on the bit/rein for some and others need to be softer on the mouth. Too many riders choke up the reins too much abd harden their hands when they acticipate their horse "acting up"

    Normally never a naughty horse, but an unaware rider or horse is trying to express something to the rider. Normally always a reason.

    We are blessed with 270 comments of experts here. It would be enlightening if these experts could preface their comments with their personal experience of the relevant aspects. For example: For those who tell us that bits are cruel, please start your comment with the number of times you have ridden your horse around a major city bitless. For those who say that curbed bits are cruel, please show us some video of you riding your horse around a big city in a significant public event in a snaffle bit. For those who are critical of the hands of the riders please include video of your riding with how you say their hands should be (preferably with sword). For those who say the horse is lame (or, as you described it, limping), please set out your observation of this particular horse by a trotting test. For those who think he is in pain, please tell us where to buy a horse that has never mucked up when being trained (as presumably you have had such a horse). This course of action would be good for us who read the comments so that we don’t conclude that you are people who set yourselves up as experts but who are sitting on your bottoms on a couch and not doing anything yourselves- not that I am saying that - you are all obviously Olympic level riders.

      @Kate Guilfoyle Please consider what people are suggesting as far as the horse's comfort. A good example for you to watch where horses are subject to large crowds carrying men with flags etc. is the Royal Canadian Mounted police musical ride. You will see these horses surrounded by cheering crowds carrying out difficult maneuvers and yet are moving with a calm smooth stride with minimal head jerking and demonstrating far more comfort. I tend to agree with the many posts that suggest changing whatever is causing these horses discomfort.

      Kate Guilfoyle I have ridden my horse around my city on numerous occasions with only a lead rope clipped to her halter. No bit. I started her with a bosal and a mecate (californio style) and got to where she a total cream puff and I could ride her with piece of baling twine. In heavy traffic with loud Harley's and kids stoned on drugs on skateboards and tourists running around acting like idiots etc. I rode for years in the wilderness in the mountains leading strings of pack horses and mules. For every ten feet you have ridden a horse I have ridden ten miles. I know what I am talking about and I am eminently qualified to comment, thank you very much

      I hear all of you. And agree. Yet the very best instructions to beginner jumpers was from a Guard teacher. He really broke down what the horse was thinking as s/he approached a jump and how the rider could help him with all that. In addition, I fell in love with Princess Anne during an interview which was taking place with her leaning against the fence of a pasture. Her horse ambled up, nuzzled her ear and hair. She didn't pause but reached back to run her hand gently down his face. As he wandered off, she broke off to look after him and say "Thank you." Then went back to her answer. So the people in charge seem to understand horses. Makes me sad that the knowledge doesn't travel.

      First thing I noticed! From experience i would place the problem in the Right Foreleg likely high up in the shoulder.
      Unwillingness to move laterally, stabbing the whole limb into the ground. I’m flabbergasted as to why a experienced horseman could miss the obvious signs of discomfort and dismiss the animal from the lesson. Especially when it’s clear from the instructor that the horse is normally well behaved. Massive red flag is being thrown and the instructor missed it and forced the horse to continue to work.

      There is a lot of head tossing, but some of the comments are uncalled for. Most of the riders have never ridden a horse before they get a few weeks training then are expected to ride with all that weight strapped round them. The spurs like it or not are part of the uniform & this is nothing to what Western horses have endured. The quality of the video is rubbish to be able to determine much. They see these horses everyday & I feel confident if one was so obviously lame they would notice that. So many experts as usual.

I have only ridden a few times & the first pony I was on at lesson 2 decided to take off & gallop like a wild thing round & round the training circle with me having the time of my life & the instructor getting very worried - but I loved it - got the feel right away & was quite sorry when the pony got tired & stopped ! A good laugh for the rest of the class ! I was very proud of myself ! But it did tell me how annoyed the pony was that he was being forced to put up with all the human nonsense - have felt sorry for them ever since ! My riding instructor (30 years ago) was a retired Life Guard. This brings back so many memories, I used to love doing drill work with him, and the discipline he instilled in our class made everything we did in the menage, or out on hacks so safe. Everyone knew where they were meant to be, how to pass each other when working on different reins. It was the best! I've never had another instructor like him.

    Did no one consider that when a horse constantly tosses hit's head ever so slightly that he is perhaps saying "give me a couple of inches of rein"? Too short a rein puts more pressure than needed. When a rider has a short rein, & spurs a horse the result just might be a rear. (You already know that.) It is difficult for the riders to adjust the reins when holding them in on hand. I noticed some head tossing amongst the darker horses too. What to do? Also the comments below have some good points. The horse is communicating as best he knows how. Could there also be a saddle fit problem, or does he need a chiropractor? Undoubtedly the trainers are aware of potential problems. Chiropractors for a horse? I'm sure you have one on call. I know some California cowgirls who ...oh well. Happy Trails, as we say out here in the West.

      Used properly spurs are a excellent means of subtle communication. Sadly many abuse them which has given them a negative stigma. It should always be body, leg, spur only when required.
      In this case the rider and instructor are ignoring massive red flags indicating that the gray has a issue on the right fore leg. Likely high up in the shoulder which is where the refusal came from. Rider panicked and used spur before leg. Both rider and instructor need their eyes examined and horse needs to see vet to determine what the pain issue is. A chiropractor would also be appropriate.

      Those spurs are actually part of the uniform. They're rounded on the ends, and when used properly, are only an annoyance for the horse, at worst. (You're thinking of the formerly royal Harry's abuse of polo ponies) Spurs are ceremonial, and part of the Guards' look. Real riders, like Zara Tindall, know that the touch of a boot heel guides a horse, but she, too wears rounded spurs as part of her formal attire. The chunky guy on the horse in question could benefit all by losing 25 pounds of fat and gain a bit of muscle. These are probably all city boys, and they need to learn horsemanship. Their instructors could pay more attention to a horse with a poor gait, too. P.S., If you think this is "like watching paint dry," you don't know or love horses. That means you know nothing about them, and only wanted to whine about spurs, like everyone else.

    He isn’t limping. His gait is irregular because he is not going forward. • @tinaleitenberger2448
    @tinaleitenberger2448 3 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    The horse is not naughty but in pain! His rider forces him to hold his head permanently to the left, because he doesn´t keep his hand in the middle. He holds on too thight to the reins and causes the horse pain in the mouth exacerbated by his inability to hold his hand steady. The horse is constantly shaking his head and trying to hold the right shank of the bit between his teeth in order to lessen the pain. This causes the rider to hold the reins even tighter because he feels that the horse cannot be stirred anymore. The horse begins to slow down and drift over the right shoulder. This results in the rider kicking his horse with his spurs. Now the horse is being held in the mouth and kicked in the belly. This situation is dangerous! It could result in the horse bucking the rider off. And it is all the fault of the rider not being able to ride correctly blaming the horse and being brutal. What should be done about it is in the responsibility of the riding instructor.

      @@Tomtom-gl9mq Thanks for this discussion. In my comment I wanted to explain why the horse behaved as he has done. No horse does anything without reason. As I have perceived this is in the riders´ action and mindset. Clearly this situation is very strenous and full of stress for the young man. Being seen in public makes anyone nervous. This is felt by the horse who gets spooky. Not being able to solve the problem starts a spiral of pain and fear for the pair. I hope that they get help by their riding instructor in private in order to build trust and confidence as the rider has to trust the horse with his life. I agree that these young riders have come a long way in such short a time which is no small feat. And I trust that the horses are being cared for as is their due for a valued partner. Being responsible for my horses 24/7 for 20 years at my own place I know how much work and commitment this means. I believe the dark horses are experienced
    drill team horses and the grey, white, horses are green. The one grey doesn't like to lead and when the horn was blown the grey horses reacted
    Also, they seem uncomfortable with the sound of the equipment. This obviously is a practice. All the head tossing shows is impatience. They are not used to walking in a tight line, but they aren't bucking, kicking, rearing, bolting, biting or doing any behaviors that show they are uncomfortable or are being mistreated and need to get out of there. If the horses were in pain or frightened they would object or flee.
    When they started the trot, the grey horses reacted as expected they were a little more excited and had trouble staying in formation. They wanted to pass the horses in front of them. When the rider told them that passing wasn't an option, they resumed their place in line and objected by tossing their heads. This was practice and not a finished drill. That is what it looked like.
    As for the riders. Their hands worked independently from their bodies. They didn't hang on the mouth or jerkon the reins. They were not kicking or hitting the horses. Also they were advanced enough to ride with one hand while carrying the sword and extra gear in the other. The riders were able to quietly sit the trot and direct the horses when necessary.
    The equipment used on the horses is traditional and only cruel if the rider has cruel or uneducated hands.
    With more practice the group will be able to perform more quietly. There is always the possibility that one of the horses may not be. cut out for drill work and will need a different job.

    This is not a "naughty" horse, but a horse who needs softer hands. When a horse walks, his head goes forward & back with his footsteps. A rider with soft hands will move the reins forward & back to allow the horse to walk naturally. This rider's hands were stuck in one spot, hurting the horse's mouth with the bit each time the horse's head could not move forward with his footsteps. Also the reins to the curb bit should be slightly looser than the reins to the snaffle bit, but this rider is holding the curb reins tighter. Who is the "naughty" one here?

    My take:
    Short rein for too long.
    Possible injury.
    Tail raised and horse tried to pause.....may indicate need to urinate or poop.
    ( I would act up if I wasn't allowed to poop!!)
    How often are these horses allowed to run freely to release pent up energy?

      My take is horse is very stiff on off side, due to pain.

    If you pay attention to all the horses all of them are acting up. They are trying to tell their riders something is coming or something is wrong. The riders need to listen to them. I’m sorry but the leaders on the ground need to listen to the horses also. There is something going on with the lead white horse. The other horses as the video goes on are starting to get iffy. Watch their ears their heads tossing. Something isn’t right and they all are picking up on it
