    King’s Troop. The 4 O’ Clock Parade.
The Dismount Parade which takes place daily on the courtyard in front of Horse Guards when the mounted sentries who have been guarding the official entrance to Buckingham Palace are relieved by dismounted sentries.
Also known as 'The Four 'O' Clock Parade' and 'Punishment Parade' it takes place at 16:00 daily when following an inspection by an Officer the mounted guards dismount, then take their horses back to the stables for the night.
    History of the Parade
The 4 'o' Clock Parade started in 1894 when Queen Victoria found the entire guard drinking and gambling while on duty and as a punishment, ordered that they had to be inspected every day at 4pm by an officer for the next 100 years!
Although the 100 years finished in 1994 the reigning Queen wanted the parade to continue as a tradition.
Two dismounted sentries will then guard the entrance until 20:00 when the gates to Horse Guards are closed and then one sentry will remain on duty until 07:00 when the gates re-open.

the Captain at some point likely will be a Colonel because he cares for his troops and their horses. ceremonial units are faced with daily dress up drudgery. Making them smile once in a while is a gift a smart commander can give them.

Dark Blue not black! The Gunners wore dark Blue so the muck from gunpowder didn't show on their uniforms. Having fired a few Royal Salutes in bad weather and the wind blowing the smoke back onto the Gun Line I can vouch for the benefits of a dark uniform! Ours were filthy by the end of the Salute! But not noticeable from a distance.

@@paulgraham3012 I know. But the inspection seen in the video (the "4 o'clock parade") is a punishment that was inacted by Queen Victoria when soldiers were found asleep at their post. She commanded that all her guards were to be inspected at 4pm sharp every day for 100 years. The 100 years _technically_ lapsed during QE2's reign, but she decided to continue it because it had become a cherished tradition and somewhat of a tourist draw in the meantime. So _technically_ QE2 decided to make a punishment for gambling and drinking on the job both indefinite AND pertain to everybody on guard, no matter if it is a regular rotation or a "guest" troop like e.g. the Mounties were for one weekend...

They all have pistols and everyone I see has a HK MP7 which is one of the premier executive protection weapons out there. Here in the USA you would likely have police officers with sidearms but not have long guns/machine pistols on their person in this situation. Glad everything went smoothly.

Didn't get a super great look at the Cavalry Army Officer's shoulder ranking, but I'm pretty sure he's a Captain, not a Colonel. It is usually a Company Commander not a Regimental Colonel who does daily inspection. That said, there's nothing better than a Ceremonial Guard Officer who LIVES for roasting during inspections. You can always tell when squadies know a roast is coming, because they can't stop grinning before the officer's even open his mouth to start teasing the posted guard.
I've been OBSESSED with the ceremonial Mounted and Footguard since I was five years old, and I never used to see officers roasting posted Guardsmen like these days! It earnestly provides a glorious reminder that these (very) young men and women are human beings with soles, who've made the selfless decision to fight for and serve their Sovereign. Don't forget, Ceremonial Roles are only half the Guardsmen's duties, the other half making-up actual ACTIVE SERVICE.
These guys and gals are the GREATEST. Life Guard/Blues and Royals, Royal Artillery, Dragoons, Grenadier Guards, Coldstream, Scott's, Irish, and Welsh Guards are the bravest and baddest of them all, and I have nothing but the utmost respect for each of these regiments!
