The cool thing is, everything he does is innovative, and makes use of natural elements; almost completely from scratch. Far more impressive than anything manufactured👍
You can appreciate everything he does and still appreciate how incredibly complex and clever some of our manufacturing processes are. Human innovation is impressive both at the cutting edge of technology as well as in the traditional homestead :)
@@Tijnas617 True enough; however, it takes amazing talent & know-how to create an entire homestead on one's own out of sheer personal skills, and materials from nature. Including food that he also forages for.

I remember listening to those video and to see how much work you did is amazing and so beautiful but not in the perfect place unfortunately but I noticed that you have more muscle than you had back then you are living the good life and you are stronger than before and you have more knowledge now and I really wish that you will be left alone and live your life and have a nice place and I will definitely follow you and your family take care

Lovely cabin! Interesting to hear about how the moss is an insolater. Beautiful mantel; so right, those rocks would come alive and show more depth with a coat of grease, but I know there's only 24 hours in a day. Very rustique and unique. I like the chinking sounds.👵😊👍
Good Monday Shawn & Cali! It would be good idea to build a firewood storeage shed near the fireplace or wood stove outside. Also door to the firewood storeage shed inside and outside. In the winter time you don't have to go outside to get your firewood.

I'm really going to miss this cabin; followed you through the whole journey. But sometimes situations in life are like bus stops; only meant for a temporary stay. This was a great chapter, and the new chapter (homestead) is coming along beautifully, including the new added touches in your videos! They are spectacular!
Shawn this makes me proud to see a man or other person who can do this Roger and I did this in the cabin up north froze our butts off until I bought up the wood heater but he said no but I said yes I got through to him and he saw the things the others had taught me so keep on posting these things on videos for others to learn!!!

You have definitely been hard at it to get the Cabin in a acceptable stage. Over time To live off grid permanently is most definitely very hard work & in my mind it will always be so. You are constantly doing many chores more than once a week so admirable - one must have the stickability to achieve it all. Love this fact that the 1st cabin you built is always going to be a favourite with me & all the very hard work you put into the place. I admire your tenacity to carry on. Travel safely & a hug to Cali from me.
It's nice to see how well it's held up. You really learned a lot while building it and it seems you made great decisions. Learning from choices that weren't the right ones for you is a good thing too. Using logs from your own property and all those skills will really make a lovely new home.
Hi Shawn . I have an idea. In the new cabin , build a box for the firewood in the wall. Half of the box outside and the other part of the box inside. You put in the wood from the outside and pic it upp from the inside . What do you think ? Good luck whith everything ! Regards from Sweden :)

Great information, as always ... the chinking grout sounds were more ASMR-like, to me, but I can see (hear) how they might approach intolerance. Not boring, more like a therapeutic and informative journey. Thanks! 😊👍

Thanks for this Shawn. In this age of gas and propane, I am saving up to install a wood stove in proximity to my kitchen, so it was quite interesting to hear your thought process about the proximity of the wood stove to the door for bringing in wood, and to the kitchen for cooking.
Heavens! What a sound! Definitely "nails on a chalkboard" to me. I kept thinking about the time you cut a doorway into those logs. That was tough. I look forward to the new build, too.

Shaw I' really like the look of the stone hearth behind the wood stove. I think it adds a great natural accent with the logs.I was hoping you would make something similar for the foundation of the new cabin maybe 2 feet high to set your first logs on.
Shawn, to start this process all over again on your outpost property I give you credit you have your work cut out for you! I guess you like keeping busy and will surely benefit from your experience!
Hi Shawn. Thanks for this video of reviewing work done on the first cabin and thoughts about how to improve the work on the second cabin. I wonder if splitting those stones behind the wood stove before assembling them with a stone sledge hammer might show a fresher face of the stone. It could be that the mortar/cement got on the face and dulled the stone. Possibly try using metal brick ties in the mortar bed of the stone and attach also to the log wall, might allow for log wall to settle. In chinking the logs I would suggest using a tool like a mason's pointing tool. You could try making a wider version tool out of wood to accommodate the wider joints between logs. Although, if you go for milled logs that might change the bed joint again. Hold the pointing tool horizontal and slide the mortar/chinking across the trowel/hawk and force into the joints. I'm looking forward if you get your portable forge up and running and try your hand at making some of your own tools.

I remember when you put the cement in as chinking and I thought, "Is that a good idea? Won't it be too heavy? I didn't realize it was clay and mud. Genius!

If you want your stone work to be cleaner and less mortar clouding, clean the work up with dilute acid and a brush. You don't need much muriatic acid in he scrubbing water but take usual precautions just the same.

A flat trowel to set the mortar on and to hold it up to the crack and a duckbill trowel to push it in makes a good clean job, a whole lot faster and easier .
The very best thing we ever did to our log home was chinking with backing rod.
No more leaks, no more bugs, home stays much much warmer with less fuel.
I have to say we used a commercial product though.
Shawn looking forward to your new cabin build...one minor comment about the placement of the kitchen, have you thought of putting it across the stove for an effective "triangle" when cooking, preparing and cleaning...just a thought.

Have you tried using a axe blade and a hammer to stuff in the chinking then the putty knife to smooth out the the mortar finishing.

I have built several log cabin structures, and the chinking job was by far the most laborious chore. We know, it is important, to keep the wind and weather out, still not it as satisfying as notching and stacking logs.

When I see Shawn pointing the logs I ask myself if there is a better way to do the pointing. I imagine that a gadget, like squeezing the cement into the space, should have been invented by now.

This may sound silly but using a spoon might work better. Just get a serving spoon, get a scoop of mud on the back of the spoon and apply mud that way, using the back side of the spoon to push into the gap and smooth at same time. Dip in water and smooth again for a finer finish.

very smart layout change for new cabin, you will have much better flow. I love learning from you as we plan our build. The land location and land purchase has been much harder than we would of imagined. Any advise or leads? would you consider selling the old cabin - we are very interested

Are those logs from old power poles? I keep noticing the mechanical look of the spiral on all the logs! Don’t know how I missed it! I have been wanting to build a cabin out of power poles! Good way to use an old wood that is only going to be burned!

Mate I know your busy but how hard was it to cut a door in the back of your cabin the door for the backroom ? I would have found that pretty hard to do myself. Great stuff mate looking forward in seeing the next build top stuff mate
