A 40 minute video uploaded 5 minutes ago and already has 2 dislikes. What do people like that do, just sit around and wait for videos to drop just so you can dislike them? You couldn't have watched it already. Now that I have that out of my system I can sit back and ENJOY 40 minutes of quality video and then like it.

I love sequence. There is a time in advance when you cut and cure wood. There is a time to build, plant and harvest from a greenhouse as well as harvesting an animal for food and hide and enjoying recreational activities like hiking, canoeing and fishing. There's an awareness of what needs to be done before the snowfall and what can be done during winter. Watching you get it all done is both exciting and peaceful 😊 👍

Dallas series (78-91) captivated me and many others. I HAD to be in front of a screen when it came on to see “what’s next.” I realized I had become addicted to a scheduled TV series. My response was to shut off all programmed TV in late 1991. Broke my addiction I did. I took control of ALL my time for years - Until….. well until My Self Reliance.

Please, please have stones laid around the perimeter of your cabin and make a French drain so your cellar does not flood during the spring thaw. I've learned this valuable and surprisingly innovative technique a long time ago.
I lost most of my supply preps when my root cellar got flooded.
I think that if you look back through the earlier videoes that Shawn has considered this and the drain goes through a pipe out past where he is currently doing his cooking while on site. Also the build in on very porous sand so that alone should be a great assistance in this area.
I thought Shawn put drains in that let the water escape down to the creek? Will have to rewatch the video when he did the foundation.
I did, but it doesn’t see any water , it all drains straight through the sand

Hi Ercan, after reading your comment, I hope one day you do get to enjoy traveling, the wilderness & have success doing what you love. Do u sell the items u carve? I'm interested in buying a piece if u do. I just turned 70 on Mon. I'm a quilter & design them also, a crocheter (afghans mostly), writer (unpublished children's books by not submitting my work) & retired Exec Admin & transcriptionist (medical, Gen & legal). How far are you from the Black Sea? I'd loved to have a shell, a small piece of wood or pebble from it. Lmk if u sell your carvings. Could I drink hot tea in your carved cup? I'd love to see your bow & arrow too. My great nephew is an archer. He's very good. He killed a rainbow trout that broke my grandson's line when we were fishing. My grandson was 10 then; he's 22 now & in Texas. I'm in Pennsylvania. My nephew was about 50-100 yards away from the trout calmly lying in the stream. It was amazing!! Plus it was my grandson's 1st time fishing. I cooked it up for him & he loved it! I had brought him from South Carolina (where he lived at the time & I lived across the line in N. Carolina about 20 min frm him) to PA for a family reunion. We decided to go fishing at the last minute before going back. I'm serious about buying a piece. I don't play chess, but love strategic games. Cryptograms are a big fav! I'm not rich but like decor items that are natural & different. My lamps are pine cones (not real, but very nice). Spare your back and potential for a hernia, having the wall fall on you during the lift ,etc.

The sheer size of a full-grown moose is pretty amazing.
My father goes out for a moose every year, it will feed him his wife, three kids, and grand daughter, and hungry sun in law.

Our host has defined the boundaries of the possible and inspired a whole host of imitators here over a brief period of years. When one man tries to build civilization from the ground up, it is always entertaining to watch. We should be mindful though that historically such a dynamic existed only during the very earliest phase of pioneering, and the rustic dwellings first established were never built to the level of precision demonstrated here and on other "one man, one cabin" channels.

I happened to hear him last year, he was predicting that freeze we had in Texas. I noticed bc it was so extreme and unusual for us. Turned out he was correct. I followed him after that, I've been surprised at his accuracy. My husband was a weather nut, I used to tease him about how bad they were at it.
He says another bad winter too, so I'm expecting it.
@@sandyjuntunen4088 I lived in Texas years ago yeah the most I saw was one morning some ice but by afternoon it melted away , I live in Ohio now and I’ve seen blizzards to ice storms where I had to cut my way out of my house , to warmer winters where it didn’t get below 35 all winter , but their saying this will be bad and farmers almanac is mostly right , I watch how many hurricanes the south has it usually means a bad winter if there’s a lot of tropical storms or hurricanes

I'm always impressed with the fact that most of the time you achieve your goal with simple hand tools, old school. So many cabin builders, shall we say, use cordless everything's, generators, power tools, all kinds of things, but you use hand tools and such. Not knocking most of them out there, but you build some really nice cabins and stuff simply. Great job and I enjoy watching you

It's been a long time since I've checked in on your progress. Busy tryin to get my TO DO LIST done. It's got to be mighty cold up there. You just added this 40 min ago & it's 8:07am my time, which means you've been up quite early!!! I'm not an early riser, & have trouble sleeping. I definitely don't have energy in the a.m. even when I manage some sleep. I get my energy mid afternoon into the evening. You're doing an amazing job!!!!! I'm so envious & wish I were young again & they're helping you. I love the wilderness but left PA woods & wasted my youth in the Houston TX. Thinking that's what I wanted but it wasnt. Wishing you all the best & an easy & healthy winter. Those are the hardest. Did u see the Aurora Borealis Mon night? It was to have been unusually beautiful. I'm in central PA; it was foggy & cloudy all day & evening so I missed it completely. That's the one thing I dream of seeing before I'm gone. Turned 70 this past Mon, but didn't go anywhere. I'm still very blessed & pray I hv at least 15-20 more yrs. Enjoy the most wonderful things in life...nature. Blessings to you & your family. L :)

Did he really get run off or did he need to keep building to keep viewers? If those previous neighbors were that barbaric there are ways they can be dealt with .
@@KennyRider137 He also had an easement on his property just like 200 ft. from the cabin he wasn't aware of. But you would have just planted land mines there to deal with that? right Charles Bronson?
@@tomwheeler6760 that doesn't give the people who use the easement the right to harass him. It sounds like they were trying to run him off. I didn't say anything about land mines, but if the neighbors were doing anything besides going from point A to point B they were trespassing. And in PA the law calls that "defiant criminal trespassing" and the land owner is within his rights to enforce his private land and peaceful existence by force.
@@KennyRider137 The easement, and the Nasty aggressive barbaric jealous neighbors are two unrelated issues. That's why I said he also had another problem. You sound very jealous, judgmental and accusatory of Shawn and his motives. No you didn't mention land mines I did because you sounded like a vigilante minded person when you said "There are ways they can be dealt with" as you are now mentioning Force! "legal" or whatever? it sounds much like Charles Bronson. Rather than saying that is what the legal authorities are for.
I can remember the time my grandfather had a root cellar to store his food in and keep it cool to last till the next year's harvest and then be restocked with fresh food . During the winter months the food would be able keep from spoiling . The way grandpa did his cellar was to dig out the side of hill and carve shelves in the walls to set for different types of vegetables and meats and fruits as each would be safe to be eaten over the coming weeks .

Interesting concept building an underground breezeway to the outdoor kitchen. Seems like your putting a lot more thought into this cabin build.
I thought it was underground cellar and the breezeway/ mud room was above the cellar and contained the staircase to go down to basement level
I was just thinking how much more versatile this cabin will be compared to the last one. And that's a great sized cellar which will be loaded up with the greenhouse goods!
You better have a roof over your breeze way...and drainage...snow and rain will make it unusable..smh

It’s really cool seeing the cabins from their raw beginnings, the finished product can only be imagined.
It’s looking strong and full and the size of it is really taking shape.
I’ve worked on a few houses and construction sites and I know the bones of a building at their early stages, yet this log cabin style while similar to the modern style is so much more interesting.
A lot of our modern materials are all there already in the timber itself.
Super cool Mr James Sir, yours is truly the definition of “a labour of love”, this project will one for the ages and you will be able to share all your progress with us and into the completion stages where you get to enjoy your fruits my friend.
My hats off to you Sir as always, a gentleman and a scholar to be sure.
