    There are 2 things which you'll always get my attention with; Thundercat's bass lines and DOOM's drum fills.

      Thundercat does all of lotus’s bass lines right? Cause they all sound like thundercats signature style but he’s not always featured in the title.

    Favorite bass cover on TH-cam. I just keep coming back to it. This had to be incredibly difficult, not only because the playing is insane but because you had to work with several bass tracks and pick apart which lines to play and which overdubs to let slide, and you absolutely killed that aspect too. I can only imagine what it felt like to nail that solo! Kudos!

    I hold that this song would sound better if the bass was smoother sounding and didn't have that underwater-warble effect to it. This video is proof.

    How did you get that sound? It sounds just like thundercat! I know you're using an envelope filter but like which one and what are the settings?

    • @funkpterodactyl5041
      @funkpterodactyl5041 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Max Klemmer Hey man, I actually recorded this clean. I think what makes it sound similar is that you can still hear the original bass in the background but if you pay close attention my signal is a bit rounder and more muted. I use a muting technique that I discovered on my own. Ive only come across one or two other people who use it; David Buda is one of the few guys who's told me they use it too and it doesn't really get taught, the only guys I know who do it found it on their own.
      So the way you do it is you hold the pinky over the string your plucking right by the bridge. It has the same effect as palm muting but sustains more, and frees up your fingers to play the way you always play as opposed to using your thumb like in palm muting. It also allows you to mute just one string but let the others ring which is nice for chords, it gives you a different texture.
      And also I was moving the pickup pan around changing it between the parts of the song. For the bass line I had more of the neck pickup, and the solo and chords I had more of the bridge pickup. The more you have the sound in your head the easier it gets to bring out of the instrument. And of course lots and lots of practice, I was practicing this song on and off for about two months.
      Hope this helps man!

      ***** Working on it, although I will play it with my friend on sax and were singing it too, so it won't be a precise note for note copy but I'm playing some of the cool stuff he does live, so hope you like it and it helps!!
