    Why do parts of the Bible disagree?
    Why does Jesus sack the temple at the beginning of John’s gospel, but later in the other gospels?
    Why does Paul talk about faith alone, but James says that faith without works is dead?
    Does this mean that the Bible can’t be trusted?
    Or are we missing something?
    Well today, I’m going to explain not only why different parts of the Bible seem to disagree, but also some practical steps you can take so that you can better understand these passages, and really the Bible in general.
    Sound interesting? Well then join me for this episode of Beyond the Words.

    Beyond the Words is like a Bible study, but different. Rather than taking you verse by verse and telling you what it means, I reveal the history and context of scripture in a way that allows you to understand the bible more easily and go back and read it on your own with a new set of eyes.

    I say Amen to you my brother. I have myself used this kind of breaking down what is written to understand why and when and where and how a passage is written. And in so doing I am than able to take from that what we can learn today. This is how I then would construct the sermons that I have preached. It hasn't always been what people thought needed to be said because I didn't just go along with what people try to say that a certain passage of scripture applies equally to everyone it does not.

    I do agree with you on some points. Example Paul said. Now for the matters you wrote about: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” and then Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do. So then, he who marries the virgin does right, but he who does not marry her does better. Paul is addressing a certain circumstance. He is not saying all men should not marry and do better by doing so, the church or species would end. Same with Tongues. Churches now days completely squelch the Holy Spirit by saying you cannot speak allowed in a church because Paul said. If anyone speaks in a tongue, two--or at the most three--should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet. On the day of Pentecost would Paul be telling the other apostles not to speak without an interpreter or not everyone speak at the same time? No. He was addressing a problem in a certain church that was written in a letter. Churches that speak in tongues now days are super orderly already and would instantly stop if the pastor wanted to preach. I have heard singing in the spirit as a congregation which does not happen today because of pastor quenching the fire of the Holy Spirit. Paul would not tell those who sing in the Spirit to stop unless they were not orderly or disrespectful. But the churches now days exclude the Holy Spirit because they don't want to make those who do not have the Holy Spirit uncomfortable..

      Acts shows Paul was a fraud Roman agent provocateur the Apostles did not believe his conversion story. And all epistles are counterfeits of the Roman Catholic church. There never was multiple Gospels by multiple authors. The Gospel was originally one book, written by Lazarus in consultation with the Apostles [John 21:24] and published soon after Jesus left them on their own. The religion was hijacked by Rome, the Gospel was broken up scrambled adulterated into a bunch of competing narratives. Later four of those adulterated gospels were canonized with falsely ascribed authorship and a Gnosticism cover-story. It was the finding of an original Gospel of Jesus scroll in Jerusalem that gained the Knights Templar power over the Church and their eventual undoing when the church finally retaliated against them Friday 13th.

    It is a great point! There is a tendency to use specific verses of the bible to give instructions without considering the context it was written and the rest of the verses around. It is just interpreted considering the current culture viewpoint. Like that part about the women learning but not being allowed to usurp the authority of man. Some days ago, while reading that part a revelation came to me. First, it is written "the man", specific subject and not all men. And if we look at all the rest of the verses until the end of that part, the choosing of Eve transgression is not to reflect the man over woman way of think, but to highlight why learning must be in silence and subjection. The whole transgression of Eve, in the first place was giving ears to what would become the serpent. She had just been created, she was naive to the world. That was why Eve was "fooled" and not Adam. Adam was there for longer, and took part in the naming of almost everything. He would had suspected as God did not showed him whatever appeared to Eve. But she was curious and naive (in the sense of not knowing much about the world). And instead of waiting until God revealed the knowledge in His time, or insisting with Him, she gave ears to something else that suited whar she wanted to do and barely thought about it. And it had the consequences it had. How does this have to do with women learning? First if we think about counseling a new student we say: pay attention to the teacher; listen to him/her, they know more about it than what you think you know; do as they say; don't talk in class, you won't pay attention... And if we compare this situation with Eve's story, it is the story of a student (Eve) and a teacher (God), and how Eve was not a good student and what it did cost: she didn't listen and usurped the authority of the teacher. Secondly, since woman were barely allowed to learn at the time, the teacher would have to be a male, thus "the man". The whole purpose of Paul was to give importance to why they needed to learn properly, in order to not get easily led astray in the acquisition of knowledge. It was never to mean that a woman could never teach a man. And it boils me quite a lot when I hear that verse as a justification of limiting the woman position regardless of her spirituality level. It is almost a defraud of scripture.
    There is so much to learn in the bible if we stop just reading and saying the words and start reading and interpret them in the context they were written...
    God bless!!

    Im glad to have came across this video, I was just reading John recently and I was thinking in the context of Jesus cleansing the Temple.
    I'd been coming from the understanding of it taking place much closer to His crucifixion and from this, always sort of marked it as the turning point where they could begin to garner enough support to put Jesus to death
    It almost took me off guard how quickly it shows up in John. What particularly stood out to me was the dialogue Jesus has afterwards, where Jesus says that if you destroy This Temple, I will raise it up in 3 days. Those questioning Him are like what?, you mean that temple thats been under construction the last 46 years?
    And then it is made clear to us by the writer, that Jesus was talking about His body. His body, is the Temple, but no one can see that
    He says it to His disciples in Matthew, in even clearer terms, but its stated once again that they couldn't understand what He was saying to them.
    Maybe its just me, but I feel everything is so much more intense nearer the end of the Gospels, its like Im full of what was going on prior and I know whats coming. But in the beginnings of the gospels, I feel as though we're just getting introduced to the Characters, Jesus isnt even meant to be performing miracles yet, He's still just kinda playing it cool, it Isn't His time yet. Then He arrives at the temple and drives everyone out.
    To me, His reason for doing it is exactly the same accross the gospels, but the way it reads is definitely different. I feel that when it is in this context, it really sets the scene for where Jesus' motives lie and we begin to see much more of His character.
    I think here, He really wants to show us that He's found a real lack of reverence for God in the people setting up a marketplace in the temple that hadnt even been built yet.
    Id just read about Solomon in Kings recently too..... just reading the way he constructs that temple is actually awe inspiring.... theres so much humour in the writing too, I definitely find.
    In John, Jesus making the statement that He'll raise His Temple back up in 3 days, I think, marks the beginning of His new covenant, where we are to consider our own "Temple's" and the temple's of others in a similar fashion. We begin to treat ourselves like the dwelling place of God and the Body of Christ, rather than part of a market place, where we are tied to the value of things on earth, and consider our place here as a result of how we fare in that market place.

    "Audience" is subset of what Pastor Brandon was explaining as Context. For instance, in explaining part of the different between Paul's and James' letters, their target audiences were vastly different. James was the recognized head of the Jerusalem Church for over 30 years after Jesus' death, burial, resurrection and ascension. Both Peter and Paul deferred to James' judgment and his decisions. James was writing to an audience of Jewish Believers. Being Jewish, James' audience already believed in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And as such, the question of "salvation" was already addressed in their minds. Therefore, James did not have to devote much attention to the "salvation" question but could move on to focusing on how Jewish Believers should conduct themselves as being emissaries of the Messiah. Paul on the other hand was addressing an audience primarily of Gentiles (read "pagans") who had no concept of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob . . . nor of what the OT prophets had said about a coming Messiah . . . nor about "salvation" into eternal life. These were all foreign concepts to the former pagans. For this reason, Paul had to devote a lot more attention of what "salvation" through the belief (trust) in Jesus/God through His faithfulness and grace toward them meant. Yes, Paul did address matters of behavior and did not disagree in his teaching with James (or Jesus) in that regard. But because he had to address the "salvation" issue with his Gentile (pagan) converts more than James did with his Jewish Believers, it could appear that Paul was teaching a "different gospel" than was James when in fact they were teaching the same Gospel Message. As Pastor Brandon taught, "context" explains a LOT ! Thank you Pastor Brandon for this and all of your insightful teachings. Berachot,

    You are RIGHT, people are TAUGHT to unversalise every Bible verse, however the Bible is not univocal on many issues - the PLAIN TRUTH is that these authors thought and believed different things about various points of theology, up to and including the divinity of Christ. Neither Context nor Bias nor Purpose explain these differences fully. The Gospels are clearly not eye-witness accuonts but are inventions based on different and common sources.
    This is the obvious answer to the questions you put.

    I viewed it as a statement of belief. If you really believe, you will be fruitful with your normal actions. You can't put the cart before the horse and "buy" or "earn" your way into salvation by performing works of charity or righteousness. You have to truly believe first, and with that belief you will take your salvation seriously, making real changes in your life showing you appreciate the grace afforded to you, and in this appreciation you will naturally produce fruitful works whether you know it or not. You will become more charitable, forgiving, and helpful to others. So maybe they are saying the same thing from different angles. One says you cannot earn your salvation through works, which you cannot since you must genuinely believe, and the other is saying you must perform works, which you will when you believe. Believe first and the works will happen due to your genuine belief.

      When you believe in Jesus Christ, you are saved. But you must not live a sinful lifestyle, that dosen't mean you won't sin anymore, for the Bible shows only Jesus Christ was sinless. Sinful lifestyle means drinking everyday or doing anything against God everyday.

    There is no disagreement between accounts. They compliment each other.
    Taking Jesus words at John 17:3, a person may conclude that he knows who God is and who Jesus is. Therefore he is entitled to Everlasting life.
    Other scriptures help up to understand what knowing God and Jesus includes.

    I am asking for help as a new~ish follower of Jesus and God. I’ve been telling my friends about the issues raised by the movie The Sound of Freedom. My question is, does God still get angry with us today like He did in the Old Testament? Some have argued that Jesus stopped God from being mad at us (the Nation, not individuals), but I think He’s fairly upset with us for allowing things to go so far astray. Any guidance for this?

    Just as with the miraculous catch of fish happening at Peter's calling, and his post-denial post-resurrection re-calling, I think the clearing of the Temple may well have happened tewice. The first was early in Jesus ministry, as reported by John just after the wedding at Cana, and the second after the triumphal entry shorty before the crucifixion as in Matthew, Mark and Luke.
    In John's timeline Jesus was still an unknown. The temple leaders may have asked, "Who is that maniacal zealot?!", as he disappeared into the crowd. When he did it ... AGAIN! .... after having ridden in as King and probable Messiah, they knew EXACTLY who he was. He didn't fit their expectations for the messiah, as his target for overthrow was apparently not the Romans but the religious leaders! I expect that helped them decide he couldn't be left at large for another year.
    If each gospel had a distinctly different chronology I'd be less inclined to think there were two events. Matthew, Mark & Luke don't always have the same sequence for other events.

    When you have multiple witnesses to an event, their perspective will be different and their accounts will be slightly different. Judges and Lawyers know that. If the Apostles accounts were exactly the same, then you’d have to worry about the authenticity of the Gospels. You’d suspect that they were written to fabricate evidence, but slight differences in their accounts of the same events suggest that they are genuine.

    John's gospel is the only one that reference to Jesus calling him as the beloved disciple...
    In all other Gospels it says that all the disciples ran away at the time of crucifixion but John says he was there
    All other Gospels say it was Joseph of Armethea who came alone to take Jesus body for burial but only John has the character Nicodemus... Who is reffered 3 times...

      I believe those were different men. Just like there are several mary's in the bible. Mary Magdala, Mary mother of jesus, and Mary sister of Lazarus. Remember not all of his disciples were there for every miracle he performed. Ask The Holy Spirit to to reveal what's being said. You can have a conversation with God once you're able to pick out his voice after reading The Living Word enough. I pray this brings you encouragement. God bless ❤

    The one thing that I know I try to understand is the two different ways in which Judas dies. One account said he fell on the earth and his body broke like a gush, while another says he hung himself. How do I discern these two very different accounts???

    • @mikeslater6246
      @mikeslater6246 ปีที่แล้ว

      These descriptions aren't contradictory, but complimentary in completing the description. For his body to have gushed open in a fall it would have likely been rotting. A likely scenario is that he hung himself and because Jews would not touch a dead body since it would make them unclean, he may have hung there for days and finally whatever he hung himself from either gave way or fell over and when his body hit the ground it burst open as many dead things to do when impacted while rotting. I can't say that this is the definite answer but it is a plausible answer to the conflict.

    • @robertschultz6922
      @robertschultz6922 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikeslater6246 I'm not saying that the stories contradict each other, but I also take it you never have been to a suicide by hanging? The whole scenario is not how the actual body works. Depending on the temperature and several other key events it can take time for the body that is hanging to do as you said. I have been to too many as a firefighter/EMT. Im sure there is a way that the two stories can happen and God can do anything, I just wonder how. No big deal

    • @mikeslater6246
      @mikeslater6246 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robertschultz6922 because you said two different ways Judas is reported to have died, I made the assumption that you believed it was conflicting stories. I apologize for the assumption.
      I was also a firefighter/EMT and was one for 10 years. Although I did deal with dead bodies in fires and automobile accidents I was blessed to never have had to deal with a suicide of any kind.
      As I said, I cannot definitely say this is the explanation for reconciling the details in the two accounts but I firmly believe this is at least one of multiple plausible explanations. As you have apparently already recognized, the Bible doesn't really give us a complete explanation.
      Thanks for the conversation and have a blessed day!

    Romans vs James: When I was studying theology, our dogmatic teacher would say: Imagine you are already pastors. Here's a text from James contradicting the basic teachings of the lutheran church you belong to. So what are you going to preach? With James or against James? Me: I'm going to be a teacher. I'll let the kids read the context. The teacher staring at me: That's not the question. You are to decide on this very verse. Me: I decide on the Bible. - This was a course on dialectic theology, Karl Barth vs Emil Brunner. And I still can't understand why I should not be able to do a proper exegesis before preaching. Ok, in Germany usually pastors won't preach longer than 10-15 minutes, but still. A text needs a context before you apply it to your life. Btw. I changed the university. In Germany it's easy, because they are all free. No need to stay in that place. I chose Tübingen, a place famous for all exegets working together: NT, OT and Judaism. Learnt a lot more.
