Gary Rossington and Allen Collins announced the formation of The Rossington-Collins Band. In the fall of 1980 they toured to support their first album, Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere, showcasing a pop-flavoured sound that still retained the Southern Rock essence of their predecessor. This superb set was broadcast on WNEW-FM December 31st, and includes an epic instrumental rendition of Free Bird.🎼🎸🎵🎹☮️

This is an old post. I have to say that Ronnie had talked about Skynyrd with a female vocalist. So here they are following through with the concept. Done rather well with Dale krantz Rossington as well! A much better band than most would accept back in 80’ Dale owned it and the boys were all in on this!

Long rest my hero and guitar idol, Allen Collins. Simply born to play guitar, a wildman genius, and for my money, the focal point of Skynyrd. This guy ripped!! Saw him three times live, then tragedy struck.
God bless Allen. This show was just 3 months after his wife died…

This here album was brilliant, I don’t think the 2nd. One was received as well. But this one is great they should have given it another shot Dale Krantz had a great set of pipes on her, Rossington and Collins never sounded better together 👍🏻

i listened to this broadcast live back in 1980 and recorded it on my cassette player
So cool, I used to listen to concerts on the radio, it was great times
yep and mine was transferred to CD many years ago. I think its time to break this one out today in 2024 and give it a listen.

Allen was awesome and a lot of guitarist have speed like he did but not very many have the feeling Gary Rossington did. Ther would be no Lynard Skynard without both of them but very few have the feeling Gary Rossington did.
You are so right about Gary Rossington. Gary put his heart and soul into it. He spoke his love of the music and his dedication to "play it pretty" through the sound of his guitar. He always played it pretty and he did it with a style and a grace that was so beautiful. Gary kept Skynyrd alive until he passed away on 03/05/23. He always did the best he could. Gary had a special talent and his passing has been extremely sad.

I was at FORT WORTH when they played, the person to my left asked me if I wanted to trip....that stuff was potent....what a show when they got too Freebird .....😶

I have this concert and remember it well. .. Great show I was 16 at the time.
Gary couldn't play like Allen and Allen couldn't play like Ed King and non of them could sing like Ronnie Van zant.
Dale Krantz is an epic rock singer though.

Never Saw Skynyrd. I was at this concert. Senior at Peachtree High School. Mother's Finest warmed up and rocked the house
Kind've on the low end of live recordings, and that's pretty bad. I'm not a big fan of live recordings, unless they try to knock down some of those standing waves and echos and fix all that crap.
But this does sound like a live performance. Wish I had been there!

I saw them at the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby (Philly) PA. Front row of the balcony. It was bouncing up & down a few inches when they did an instrumental "Free Bird" w/ RVZ's hat hanging on the mic out front & center on the stage. Fantastic night of music.

Does anyone know why this band broke up - for sure? I have many speculations. Just looking for definitive reasons.
Alot of problems between Gary and Allen mainly I believe about Dale Krantz Rossington who both were involved with her somehow at one time until she started seeing Gary regularly as story goes. Plus Allen's wife Kathy dying during childbirth really put him into a spin. JMO. Respect

For Shore friend many shows were there, the place wasn't made for music but the shows were awesome. Is the Fox still open?

I was a senior in High school when they crashed. We were all devastated when we got the news. Where they crashed at was not very far from where I live in Mississippi

What the hell happened the recording was good up to they got to sometimes you can put it out than it all went to hell from there it’s a shame RCB was never captured live on video or anything only audio recordings that was a smoking band Way better than what is called Leonard Skynyrd today for sure

Was stationed at NAS Memphis/Millington TN in the summer of '80. Went UA from a stupid ass duty section ( clean the barracks) to see RCB at North Hall in Memphis. Cost me a stripe & $300 in pay forfeiture.
WORTH . EVERY. PENNY.
MATSS-902 was a chicken shit squadron commanded by a grounded Major who had serious issues-hence the reason he was there. Left in Sept. & headed back west to MCAS El Toro-where I got at least the stripe back.
Some 44 years later-wouldn't change a thing.

What I'm curious about is how is Allen Collins playing when his wife died end of Sept. that year. I saw them 11/17 80 Largo.MD. I thought the lineup was MSG, Johnny Van Zant Band, RCB, Molly Hatchet. I guess he just sucked it up and went out on the rode. The crash was still fresh and they hoped this would be a new musical life. They do sound awesome live. Those guitars...
@@MGS61 she died in Sep 80, they cancelled shows & took abt a month off, kicked off tour abt end of Oct 1980.
Allen's behavior was very erratic understandably, he would show up totally wasted & couldn't play or he would show up but it would get yo be too much he would walk off or not show up. They had to cancel a lot of concerts because of it.
I saw them 12/15/1981 & Allen was there & played his ass off but the man was just broken & by that time Gary & Dale were together, they all tried to help him esp Gary but IMO when Kathy died a big part of him did too. Gary & Dale got married & moved to Grand Tetons to start a family.
Allen pulled himself together long enough to start ACB but that only lasted 1 album.
He blamed himself, he thought either God was punishing him for not being a good & faithful husband or that God took Kathy to protect her from Allen's destructive behavior.
Very sad for Allen & his kids & very sad for the guys esp Gary who couldn't help him anymore

Great musicians u couldn’t get better than those left out of Skynyrd but they needed a songwriter like Ronnie there songs were not uplifting like Ronnie had the magic he could write songs that lifted u even his Ballards .
