    This by far is the hardest part of keeping animals. Anyone who has done it long enough has had stuff like this happen. We become so attached to our buddies and it's so tough seeing them suffer or dealing with a loss. I give you props for even sharing this, I don't think most could. Hope he pulls through bro.

    I've seen someone make a floatation device for a sick fish. Sounds crazy but it kept the fish upright until it healed.

  • @totallynottrademarked5279
    @totallynottrademarked5279 7 ปีที่แล้ว +104

    Keep an eye on his belly and make sure it's not bloated. He might need it drained if he stays belly up. A bunch of Asian care videos shows this as being a problem in Arowana species.

  • @kelmm568
    @kelmm568 7 ปีที่แล้ว +554

    This happened to my Florida gar once where he was swimming spastically and turned upside down. It was also his swim bladder which I held him with two pieces of Walmart pool noodles I cut to size. I put both pieces on the sides and some rubber bands around him and the foam to make sure he swam upright which he finally recovered after about a day. You should try this and I would at least keep him upright to allow his swim bladder to properly adjust.

    • @kelmm568
      @kelmm568 7 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Letting him toss and turn will cause more issues. And if you do find my post you may also want the current lower so he doesn't get tossed around. Hope it all works for you

      I hope Joey reads this. Putting him in the right position will definitely lower his stress (and risks of being stung) which helps any healing process. It's a surface fish, he won't mind and will be able to rest. The way he is, he is not resting, sleeping or anything, he is tired of trying to get to the right position and spending all his energy. As joey stated, he clearly relaxes when Joey holds him.

    Hey Joey
    1. Your doing the right thing. There are times when you have to act fast in the hobby, and there are times when you have to keep calm... This is a time to keep calm!
    2. Keep watching him closely, like you said if the time comes you will take action.
    3. Sounds like a good idea to move him to a hospital tank if he dosn't improve.
    4. How do these fish respond to heat treatment? I don't know if you've tried it, but I've cured alot of fish by raising the temperatures, lots of water changes and lots of air. It's a well known treatment for discus and other chiclids.
    5. Sometimes it sounds like you feel you have to justify your actions to us... you defenatly don't man. No one can say you're not doing the very best for your fish... I don't know, probably not necessary to say this, but I did:-)
    Good luck!

We have no right as viewers to tell him how to do things just give our opinions. And Joey shouldnt have to feel the need to justify his actions

    Did you consider one of the spines on the ray got him under a scale? A puncture to the side, near the swim bladder, could have startled him causing him to jump leaving him with doubled trauma. Have you checked to see if any of the spines on the rays are missing their sheath?

    • @KarMa-xm4oh
      @KarMa-xm4oh 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Ross joey mentioned he checked the rays for stress because of his suspicions that it was water issues. If there were missing spines Joey would notice the stress on one of them and notice the missing spine.

    • @S3cr3tAsianMan
      @S3cr3tAsianMan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Matthew, from what I could tell he was looking for stress signs such as curling. I doubt a spine was lost, I was more so commenting on the thin membrane that covers the spines being pulled back which is sometimes something that is overlooked.

    Joey I had this with my silver arowana he jumped and got trapped between my lid and the glass injuring his swim bladder in the process I researched online and found massaging the belly of the fish helps to push out trapped fluids/ air and apply pressure to the swim bladder my fish slowly recovered and has now been given to a family member once I got him back to 100% give it a go !

Try telling an arrowanna that's highly agitated that your trying to help it. At least once they know your helping like Joey's Asian arrowanna knows Joey's doing they somewhat calm down.

    It's truly disturbing to see the amount of ignorance and lack of sympathy in the top of the comments section. His favourite pet is dying, show some humanity.
    I'm guessing it comes from outsiders who aren't regulars to Joey's channel. For those who do support him, ensure you like the constructive and sympathetic comments and reply them. The youtube algorithm favours comments with replies. (Which is why controversial comments get to the top).
    A simple "+" reply can send the positive comments all the way to the top for Joey to see. He's given us high quality free content for years. The least we can do is show some love and respect.
    Edit: If anyone disagrees with me, as there have already been many, feel free to leave your opinion. I recommend that you put some thought into it to avoid possible embarrassment.

      Victorbrine felix pet stores and vets are different. The US has plenty of fantastic veterinarians.

    • @dilan8702
      @dilan8702 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Eeehhh, vet stores aren't the same thing as vets. Veterinarians are people who specialize in treating animals and animal surgery. People have to go to (I believe) a 4 year veterinary school, similar to how people have to go to med school to become a doctor. Anyways, I'm sure you get my point, vets know what they are doing, and if an animal is seriously injured it is always better to bring them to a respected vet.

    • @snackbug
      @snackbug 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Specialist vets are 1) highly expensive 2) pretty rare to come across, especially for aquatics so transport of the fish or getting the vet to him in Canada would be outrageously expensive time consuming and stressful 3) wouldn't be able to do much more in terms of treatment than Joey is currently, sadly, he knows what he's doing pretty well. A vet may be able tell him exactly what he already suspects, but it'd put so much stress on the sick fish he would likely die.

    Sorry for your loss dude. As fish keepers we get arranged to to these amazing creatures. I lost a large chocolate cichlids last week, and three weeks ago my peacock cichlids developed swim bladder problems, after putting him in a 18 litre tank, I added aquarium salts and some swim bladder treatment which the peacock recovered , however he now swims near the surface and now and then he will dive down and return the the surface, but as least he is swimming upright. In the tank. Once a gain, so sorry for your loss dude. Take care.

    Joe cut off about 10 inches off the bottom of the wood scape (the tall side). Place a few needle leaf java fern on the top to make up for the height. In the end it would look a lot better and safer for when the blood red goes in.
    Or you can even cut it further off the bottom so the wood doesn't go past two thirds of the tank. Then when the plants grow in it will look even sicker. Could always do one of those rock backgrounds for this tank too.
    Pouring one out for buddy tonight, he was a beast.

    I lost a big clown loach in similar fashion. He got spooked by a much bigger pleco, jumped out of the water and hit his head on the lid. He was also swimming upside down for a few hours before passing away. I saw your other video where you decreased pressure on his swim bladder with a syringe and was wondering if you could do a video demonstrating this technique... if and when you are up to it.
    I felt so helpless as I saw the loach struggling to swim upside down in loops and wonder if the technique you showed would have helped. The emotion in your face and voice is clear to see and its also painful to see such an elegant fish in this situation.

    • @jonathansims8562
      @jonathansims8562 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Flukes are a small hook worm external parasite. The either hide from light behind the gills of a fish destroying the gills by feeding on them, or can hook onto the body. They breed very quickly in warm water. They cause fish to flick and scrape of decorations through irratation which can cause damage to fins and gills.

    It looks like possible brain damage/concussion, because he seems a little disoriented and erratic at first. Possible internal bleeding and/or organ damage. Maybe not the swim bladder, could be something else internal. I don't think he's broken his back, because if that was the case he wouldn't be able to swim, let alone that fast. I really hope he'll be okay. Poor baby.

      @ttce99 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hecci666 that's exactly what I was thinking. I have a koi that loves to jump and the same thing happened with her. Same behavior as the arowana, I seriously doubt the broken back as well because he wouldn't be swimming at all and would most likely have passed already. My guess is a concussion. Disorientation would have him running into the sides of the tank and eventually lose balance. A few days or weeks and he should be okay in my opinion

    • @GrimFelArt
      @GrimFelArt 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Taylor Evans Yep. The flailing and panicked, disoriented swimming says brain trauma/concussion to me.

    • @GrimFelArt
      @GrimFelArt 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Bruised internal organs could possibly be leading to the arched posture as well, because the animal is in pain. At this point I'm definitely thinking brain trauma is the main culprit though. Notice how he goes still and calm when held? That's likely because he's able to be still and can see, because brain trauma would be giving him blurred vision, making him panic further.

    As my experience, please check the pH in the water that is believed a main problem for any arowana. The ideal pH for them is a round 5.5-7. Especially, when we relocate them in a new tanks we should keep the old water for them to make the new home familiar as the old place.
