I've been keeping saltwater for years, and not really into freshwater. So I watch your videos for the stories, rather than information. Keep up the good work dude.

Love that you talk about these things so honestly Joey. I've had a few disasters myself, almost to the point of packing it all in. Seeing we all struggle at times in this hobby despite our experience makes it easier to pick up the pieces, continue learning and coming back better than before..

Too many fishkeepers only ever talk about the success, never the fails, because of this new fish hobbyists get discouraged when something bad happens and think they are bad hobbiests, ending up leaving the fish hobbie. And its damaging to the new generation of fish keepers. Great Video Joey and glad it worked out not too bad for you. Have a great day mate.

Sorry for your loss, Joey. I had a 90 gallon tank blow a seal while I was away at college and had nothing I could do about it. Not as big as your leak, but I still know a similar feeling. Ignore the ignorant comments and the hate. I’ve been watching for years and understand this hobby unfortunately has times where bad things happen. Love the content and keep up the good work. I’m sure same mistakes won’t be repeated.
Joey I am so sorry for your disaster. I had a 55 gallon almost completely empty due to a UV sterilizer bulb housing not being screwed back in while waiting for a replacement bulb. That took hours to clean up. I can't imagine cleaning up 1000 gallons. I am so sorry for your loss but thanks for sharing your experience. Hopefully we can all learn something. Love what you do and love your channel! Keep them coming!

You need to set up a system that detects lowering water levels and shuts off the pump to avoid these problems also make you electrics waterproof

I am sorry to hear about your losses. I will have to say you have an amazing support group (wife and friends). This disaster could have been much much worse. Thank you for sharing! I will be curious to see some of the things you will put into place to ensure this won't happen again.
Also, can we appreciate what a boss Joey’s wife is. SHE HAS NO INTEREST IN THE HOBBY. Yet she did the best thing she could possibly do given the circumstances. Joey you are very lucky to have such a dedicated partner in life.

Here's what I think you should do. First: take your family out for a nice evening - dine out with candles on the table and strawl some time in the shopping area of Truro (is that the correct spelling?) - your wife was your 'first responder' - make her feel your gratitude.
Second: get the mess in the fish room cleaned and dried and eventually get some company to the lion.
I've been married too, and sometimes wives deserve our gratitude.....

Aww. The eel was so fun to watch. Those Arawana must of gone through so much stress. I feel so terrible but I'm glad it didn't get much worse.

You need a floor water alarm for leak detection. They sit on the ground with two probes. When the circuit gets completed they go off like a fire alarm. I think they even make "smart" ones

I'm glad everything is okay minus the fish! This could have been a lot worse with fires, and/or flood damage, but anyway...... this really goes to show you that no matter how professional you are, no matter how responsible you are, even having all of the top-of-the-line equipment that you own, and even having back up to backups like your complete generator system........THEESE THINGS CAN AND...............WILL!!!! HAPPEN!!!! Glad you and your family's home and gallery are safe. Best of luck and keep up the good work

I think its very crazy how things work. That your wife wasn't able to make the talk but able to save your gallery. One of those crazy right place at the right times even though it doesnt feel like it.
Not a frequent viewer of this channel, but seeing you positive and hopeful about this experience and the rest of the fishes, and not backing down after such a big loss is such an inspiration. Any fish would have experienced a luxurious life with you, and wouldn't have had any regrets in their life. Stay strong
Thanks for sharing this, and being so open about it. Heartbreaking - I loved that little snowflake eel. And I'm not even a saltwater/snaky kind of person. And of all the arowana, I was really looking forward to seeing that inscriptus develop. :-( Man. You can never be too careful, and especially when there's so much going on it's important to not skim over any details. But stuff still happens. Throw an accident on top of it all, and sometimes it trips a huge stack of dominoes.

Recommendation from a plumber and a fish geek: Get rid of that black hose with the built-in failure points and switch over to schedule 40 or even schedule 80 PVC pipe. Glue the joints properly and it never leaks and never breaks under normal use. Just give the joints 24 hours to cure before using the pipe if you're concerned about the glue being toxic to the fish.

Snowflake eels do like to jump, I used egg crate/lighting diffuser to cover the tank he hasn't been able to jump out.
He is close to 2 ft a good size. Lately I have down sized my tank and he is the only big fish I kept. If you would like
you are more than welcome to have my snowflake since I know he would go to a great home.

For the piping how about some reinforced piping? I personally hate flex piping had a nasty experience when I started years ago..Changed out to completely rigid piping for my tank AFTER getting some inspiration from your videos..

Man some days when you think it could never go worse, it does. And it catches you of guard. We all went through those type of day.
Sorry Joey, I understand how bad this feels. My family and I have a 3000+ gallon pond with Koi and have had two big disasters. We lost our biggest butterfly koi this winter sadly. One of our two pond disasters was when our refill valve broke and started filling water, which had chlorine, into our pond. It happened when everyone was out of the house and when we came back there were fish floating dead everywhere. We were still able to save 8-10~ fish of the 25~. I can't recall what the other pond disaster was since it happened before this one. We haven't had any big problems for 4-5 years other than one fish dying here and there. We used those two experiences to learn from and we haven't had problems since. Thanks for showing these videos Joey because this hobby isn't always smooth sailing.

Happens to the best of us. Had a salt water with 10 grand worth of fish and corals thought I had everything under control. Left out of town for 3 day weekend . Storm came through. Power out for 72 hrs.. The week before I was doing maintenance on my generator and forgot to hook it back up.. lost everything. Luckily you wife was home. It could have been so much worse
I know this is 1yr old but I'm so sorry for your loss. When I first had my 20 gallon aquarium, I started with Tiger Oscars, Orandas, and Shubunkins.... I also added some Red tail sharks. And some Philippine Angelfish. My Oscars just keeps jumping out and I couldn't figure out if it's because I have too much water or they don't like the community I've put them in. Or maybe I just needed a better cover. I was about 19yrs old when I upgraded to a 20 gallon aquarium and I didn't know much. We didn't have a lot of TH-camrs do give me some points and I relied so much on the pet stores I buy these fish off and although they've been taking care of fish longer than I did, they also make mistakes here and there, either because of slight negligence or they just didn't know. It's always a constant learning with everything and for everyone.
you handled crisis like a champ bro. I had a flood in the house, not aquarium related and that alone is stressful enough. you have a great support system (ie wife, friends etc).

I work in an aquatic store. I kid you not, when i put my hand in the snowflake eels tank, he would move into a gap the size of a fingernail, and wriggle under the covered light strip, and move to the neighbouring tank. I tried my best to keep him in that tank, but every morning he would be in a new tank, harassing the other fish, possibly moving three tanks along!
The blockage of the drain by the mice actually probably saved you from a worse fate. Imagine that water being pumped outside and not tripping the breaker, not signalling to you something was wrong.

This is truly the stuff that makes you want to quit. I only have 3 tanks and the largest being a 180. It gets tough sometimes especially with a full time job. I cbf anymore but I also dont want to lose my fish friends. I really get attached to my pets and I would hate to think they went to a person that didn't know how to look after them.

Reminds me of when I lost my colony of rare plecos because of a rookie mistake with a canister filter. After being completely devastated I picked my self back up and switch the Pleco tanks to corner matten filters. Mistakes are only awful if you don’t learn from them!

So sorry dude, Big props to your wife what a hero! I had the same problem with that type of corrugated pond hose, I suggest you use solid pvc pipes right through the system thats what i did.
your wife is the real mvp. and my dad may make fun of people crying over.. spilt fish, but it happens! i had a plecostomus that my cat scooped from the tank it was in and it fell on the floor and he brought it too me. it was very crazy, but that kinda thing happens from time to time XD

I'm glad you're honest about these occurrences. We, as hobbyists want to take as best care of our fish as possible, however at the end of the day they're just fish. It's not the end of the world or the hobby if a fish dies.
With all the fish you have you need to have an additional fish keeper as a helper
Atleast only a few fish died. The water could’ve caused a short circuit and killed all the fish in the gallery.
Everything is on GFCI.
I also have a predator tank with an eel. i did not have a lid, and i saw this video yesterday it got me worried. Well! I woke up today and my eel was also on the floor! however when i picked it up it wriggled! and i placed it back in my tank and it swam back into its cave. i got so lucky! sorry it wasnt the same for you ;(

Damn Joey, its always when we go away and cant get there fast enough. Sorry to hear about Snowflake and Scriptus. It is hard to see this happening to you or anyone cause I've been there to. Thankfully, as you said, because of so many fish in the gallery its not as devestating for you this time because you havent formed that same kind of bond. Strangely that is a good thing.
