I remember as kid, the revelation of Makuta shocked and confused me. His discussion with the Toa and what he implied stressed me. Even after the heroes defeated him and we're given what was supposed to be a cheery ending, I was left with a haunting sense of dread just thinking about the topic of Makuta's conversation. To think that story based on a toyline for kids was able to make me (and others I'm sure) feel like this was amazing and epic...
I think it speaks to the effort that Templar Studios put into the game, as well. They had been contracted to make what was essentially an interactive toy ad aimed at boys 8-12. They absolutely could have half-assed it. Instead they made something that had legitimate atmosphere and heart.
I know what you mean, man. For me, the most unsettling part of this was just how...easily Makuta was throwing the Toa around. As someone who grew up on shows watching the heroes dominate all their bad guys, seeing a villian beating the crap out of what all the cutscenes so far had depicted as immortal, invincible titans was chilling. And the most incredible thing is that we find out later in the storyline that at this point in time, he really *was* just toying with them. Makuta was barely even using a fraction of his power against the Toa, and they still got their masks handed to them until they used their elemental powers. They just don't make stories about toys like they used to, man. Then again, I guess that's part of growing up - everything else seems shallow in comparison.
Here's something that will change the way you think about Makuta: Makuta is destruction, while Mata Nui is creation. Makuta is Mata Nui's opposite the same way the Shadow Toa are the Toa Mata's opposite. He says that he bore the Toa. From the void came creation. When Makuta destroys them, they'll return to the void. The void being the swirling mass of Lega parts in his lair, which represents the pile of Lego pieces on the floor that every Lego creation comes from and eventually returns to. Makuta represents the inevitable dismantling of Lego creations and their return to that pile of parts, and he is "side by side" with Mata Nui in that they're both natural elements of Lego.
I can't tell you how many years I've had that thought in my head. Being a kid and going into my Bionicle box over and over again, searching for a part, smearing it all around like that. For some reason, I just never wrote it down. You nailed it. They even say earlier, when they are the Kaita and get split back into their original forms. "Makuta is the spirit of destruction." Getting pulled apart. Its insane to realize just how much philosophy and cosmic dread went into a kid's toy. Never gonna happen again. Not in the same way. Regardless of how we all turned out, this is something we'll all share.
It's also a deeper metaphor for life and death in general. We are all born from the universe, we all die at some point, and our bodies then return to the universe and become dust.
The true form of the Makuta. The immeasurable, Tetsuo esque shapeless destroyer, who I think can be personally blamed for every broken socket in the toyline
In the eyes of the toa this form is horrifying. Just imagine walking up to what looks like a swirling vortex of flesh and blood and it attacks you with guts and bones.
I remember when I first played and beat this game. This part was SOOOOOOOOOO COOL! Lego is bigger now then ever! I wish they would make a game like this or a Bionicle game with REALLY high production value.

SonicSuperBoom1 Nope. None of the Toa Mata died lol. Lewa got abducted by Bota Magna natives and was never heard from again. No one seemed to care though.

Head cannon on how this fits with the later rework of Makuta as Makuta Teridax: this scene DID happen, dialog and all, but the whole "I am nothing" thing was just Teridax shape shifting and messing with the Toa. "You can not destroy me. For I am nothing." (Off screen) "Heh, suckers. Can't believe they fell for that!" Edit: The same could be said of the way he acts in the Mask of Light movie, claiming to keep Mata Nui asleep to spare him pain. Maybe he's really just been a pathological liar the entire time!

I wish I had known about it, back then I put my tape recorder next to the speaker and recorded the sound from the game so when I found out the song had actually been released I was ecstatic. If only they released a full instrumental version of this that played during Lewa vs Onua fight instead of that 15 seconds or so that they did release.
"The people of this world are builders, but look into their hearts, and you'll see they have the power to destroy". I wonder if he refers to the matoran...or to US, the humans in the real world...
Dan Eyal Jordan Peterson could turn this into a talk about "integrating your own shadow" once again... and the first movie was quite literal about that at the end 😂, with the Toa of Light and Makuta becoming one new entity.
It was some kind of special set. It also came with the Hafu Tohunga figure, and a super-shiny silver Hau. I think it's supposed to be the Mask of Wisdom, forget what it's called.

I do not understand this scene too much. Is this supposed to be Makuta Terridax? Or was this long before Terridax, as a concept, existed? Was the Makuta supposed to be something else? Something far less physical?
Ricardo Tolbert like before Terridax was created in universe by the Ancients or before Terridax was even made up by the creators of the BIONICLE franchise?
This version of Makuta actually represents the darkness inside Mata Nui, part of the Great Spirit fallen from grace. He wouldn't become the character we know as Teridax until much later.
Kelsey Raabe yes but the way Teridax was created in lore, it is implied he was always that physical form. Now I can give it up that this game was made far before Metru Nui and the concept of the Brotherhood of Makuta...but there’s a serious Continuity error to be found here.
