I always thought it was super weird that Ryu could transform into "Ken" and Akuma" in this game. Pretty slick way to include them as extra characters tho.
Technically, he has his Street Fighter II/III hair in this game. Pay attention to his sprite in Ryu's intro and ending, Ken doesn't have a ponytail and is a bit wilder than his Alpha sprite.
I played this version my whole Life, only played the arcade version more or less 3 times. When i moved to MvC 2, first thing i thought was " why three characters?"
It's funny max references the EX Games with DHC as in Japan the PS1 Marvel VS. Games are called EX. So X-MEN VS. Street Fighter EX Marvel VS. Street fighter EX and Marvel VS Capcom EX. They were versions especially made for ps1 limits from ground up. So they aren't arcade ports they had to do everything all over again.

I honestly hate mvc2. People. Would just spam assist sentinel and Dr.doom and the screen would be filled with projectiles. This was when the vs. Series was at its best

I knew SFvXmen and Marvel Superheroes vs Street Fighter existed, but I knew nothing of this MAJESTIC FAWN. Also finally Max realizes super canceling. Beautiful sight.
Watching Max discover the SF EX-style Super cancel mechanic that's hidden in this port in real time was super cool. I do wish that we got to see him play around with the mechanic a bit more, but getting his surprised reaction on-camera was definitely worth it.
...and it is only on the PS1 version. Megaman has actually 4 special moves in this version! + extra outfits + play as the last boss (which is totally bad a!)
Oh, you could play as Onslaught in the Dreamcast version. You had to unlock all the other secret characters. He was his own sub-mode: Onslaught mode. Effectively a variant of Survival mode.
The weirdness of the early verse series was actually great! It was a complete 180 from Street fighter and darkstalkers so it felt fresh and brand new even if a lot of the assets were recycled...
I didn't realize this version was different from the arcade version! This was the only version I had since I had it on ps1 and not dreamcast. I also loved that you can pick your character twice. Nothing more satisfying then locking someone up with Gambits Royal Flush, then Super cancelling into a double Gambit Royal Flush. 99 hit combo easy.
Growing up my brother always handed my ass to me in fighting games, specifically SF and he always hated Akuma. I got MVC for PS and practiced the hell out of everyone and we had a match one day. The look on his face when I'm Ryu and I switch to Akuma's move set was worth all the effort.
Characters are just game mechanics and animations said a guy who helped to make MVCI now he's probably reconsidering his life because everyone is after that dude

totally! i'd make teams for the lore or bc of established best friends status, like ryu + cyclops and akuma + wolvey in Xmen vs SF, the shoto beam team in MVC2 (ryu, akuma, dark sakura), and androids 17 + 18 + 16 (DBFZ)

Though it seems wierd the way that, in that ending scene, Sean says "Please be good to me" when asking Ryu to train him, there will be a good reason for it. I'd say it comes down to the translation taking what he probably said in Japanese a little too literally. Chances are in the JP version he said " よろしくおねがいします / Yoroshiku onegaishimasu", which is something we'd say when meeting someone for the first time, and though the English translation would be pretty much what the in-game translation says, the sentiment doesn't really translate well when it's taken literally in English. The sentiment from a Japanese person's perspective is more like saying, "I hope we form a good relationship" or "I'm looking forward to working with you", and it's meant to be a nice way of getting off on the right foot. It seems kinda funny when it's translated literally when "please be good to me" is not really a natural thing that we'd say when introducing ourselves in English.
Here in the UK we have an electronics store that specialises in preowned games called CEX, I found a mint condition copy of MVC1 on PS1. £50 well spent. Bloody expensive but I couldn’t pass it up.
Damn, £50? That's a lot. I haven't been to CeX in a while so I totally forgot about their prices. Cool pickup though! 240p support too so it looks sharp on a CRT provided you use RGB Scart.
the ability to cancel supers into supers is why I loved the PS1 version the most. I'm not fond of capcom fighting games but that is something I wish would be in more games as it was just pure fun to do
woo I played this game so much in the PS1. Cross assault with assist (special hero) calls the assist constantly, being possible some sick combos, also the assist has unlimited uses. You can unlock and plays as Onslaught too (in both sizes!), really dope if you think how they tried to rebuild the game to fit the playstation

This one was absolutely my favorite (alongside MVC2 of course). I thought the features of variable cross, 3 for 1 Ryu, hidden characters like Red Venom (Carnage)and Gold War Machine (Iron Man) and crossover mode was great to make up for not having the regular tag system and limited roster size. I feel like it’s one of those games where you’re pretty decent with everybody. Plus, I think the soundtrack was on point.

IIRC, if you have a character partner, while blocking if you do a forward fireball, it will call an assist from your character partner
Don't dis the sound effects of psx marvel vs capcom, I have the fondest memories of this version of the game, I wish infinite had this sound effects.
