I think it was basically obvious that Xigbar was posed as the successor to Xemnas, and thus Xehanort by extension, since KH2, and really came to fruition in this game. I mean, he was #2 in the org since the beginning. It always felt like it was coming to pass that he'd be more important than he seemed. If you play Days and listen to him in the break room it actually comes off pretty clear that he's a *very* good schemer, and seems to know things that even Xemnas might not. Playing the long game.

@theprecise Xigbar being Luxu wasn’t a retcon. If you rewatch previous cutscenes in all of the games, you pretty much get a totally different perspective on Xigbar’s character. Bruh terra is one of the best characters in the series. I wish he’d get more respect. He was a simple guy. Wanted to become stronger by becoming a master. He didn’t make the best choices and struggled but all he could do was keep moving forward regardless. Hell his character theme song is a clear representation of that. It’s one of the reasons why yoko shimoura (I hope I spelled that right) is one of my favorite composers. There’s more I could say but don’t have the time to.

  • @thebluePrincess5904

One thing I absolute love about bbs story is how Ventus arc is a very much of subversion of the coming of age story. here let me explain, through out Ventus story we see him being frustrated over people treating him like a kid. He clearly hates it and wants prove to them that he's not just some kid who needs to be protected it's why he refuses to just go back home despite Aqua’s pleading because he wants to get stronger. It's a pretty good standard coming of age story but then it becomes incredible by the story's end game where it's revealed that Ventus's entire coming of age journey was orchestrated by the villains the entire time. Ventus's entire journey was created by Xehanort just so he could be strong enough to fight Vanitas and forge the X-blade. It's one of the most clever and respectful trope subversion I've seen in all of fiction and I love it.

I love the way you give each of these stories their due analysis. You really show how, for as silly as these games can be, there is still a method to Nomura's madness. Given the dismissive attitude most KH reviews take towards the story, it's honestly really refreshing to see someone argue the flipside so articulately.
Honestly, I'll always love the gameplay of BbS, for as unbalanced as it might be. The flash, game-feel, and sheer variety of the KH combat are part of why I love it so much, and I do think there's at least a bit of strategy to filling up the command meter. It's fun to be deliberate about which commands you choose to get a certain Command Style, and experimenting with them gives the combat a lot of energy. It's not as nuanced and technical as KH2, but I don't think it's completely devoid of depth. It has its own appeal, I think.
    Fantastic review.

BBS is probably the best use of Nomura's madness. Things are crazy, but they are 100% coherent. It really helps that his tendency to run fifteen plots at once is split up across three separate characters, all with equal campaigns. None of the major moments are rushed or done offscreen, as we've seen in other games.

I think for the most part the story was sort of fine until DDD. Yeah it can get a little crazy, but it's easily understandable if you've played all the games.
DDD did some things good but it made the overall story way too rediculous. And it got even worse with the mobile games.
The stuff with the Masters, Box, Luxu and the Gaurdians was good but everything else like the time travel, pods, reincarnation and all the data bullshit made the story way too complicated. (Especially since it's all in a mobile game)
I just hope the next Saga stays focused and DOESN'T go off the rails. Nomura should clearly plan the story now and stop having important story content in seperate consoles and mobile games.

i personally go with that version even tho nomura confirmed something completely diffrent. afterall, nomura also says completely diffrent stuff than can be logically concluded by playing the dang games themselves,so i dont think what he says is credible enough despite him literally being the writer xD i personally think it is a nonintrusive implication of bbs since if it was not the case, then sora got the power to wield keyblades from the kingdomkey since he was the only person nearby that was ready to fight for the light and not fear or succumb to the dark. if it was the case, then the keyblade would have gone to him because he was the only one who represented the light and was already able to wield keyblades at the same time. nothing changes.
but the entire thing has a sideeffect:the mysterious voice who was confirmed to be mickey by the ultimanias is suddenly ventus guiding him towards the right path and make sure he is ready to face further struggles. i much prefer that since it erases the question of how mickey was able to telepaticly talk to sora while that guy was currently in another realm entirely and why that way of communication is never brought up or expainned

Terra does'nt reject this until he get's to Snow White, and then he suddenly realizes the moral implications of that. There's that fight in Raidant garden that he really should've questioned, the fight with Braig where it seemed like he captured Xehanort. He never asked how exactly this happened and did'nt find it suspicious at all. Just him asking that question would go along way to make him not an idiot and could show Xehanort much better as a manipluator. I get the idea of what their going for, but the execution is NOT handled well in this game. I grew more fond of Terra in 0.2 despite only having a brief scene, that one scene did more to actually make me care about saving him than his story in this game did.

A controversial kh game indeed. This was definitely a major turning point for the series, and a lot of fans of what came before didnt like what came after - and not without reason. A lot more attention on convoluted plot bs from this point on, and while the strong emotional character stuff is still there, it more and more requires players to read between the lines to find it as the text itself puts more attention on structural plot business. The disney stuff becomes increasingly supurfluous while the final fantasy stuff receeds almost entirely from view. Gameplay focuses less and less on in the moment decisions and trade offs and loses a lot of it's tight, responsive feel.
Lots of valid complaints to be had, but in exchange for the flaws we get fun characters like xehanort and vanitas, sprawling, star-warsesque lore (i cannot express how good a fit star wars stuff would be for a kingdom hearts game, or how frustrating it is that disney's idiotic exclusivity deal with ea prevents the crossover from happening), and the series only playable female protagonist to date, outside of multiplayer misdions in days using larxene and xion, which really shouldnt count.
BBS, and its follow up 0.2, also gave us our first real taste of exploring the world of darkness itself, a compelling setting that I wish had gotten some game time in kh3.
In all, i really like bbs and the games that came after, but yeah, i can see where many really didnt.

I don't blame the games for the latter, disney seems to be getting increasingly overprotective of their ip. Still a noticeable shift for the first few games regardless.
Not that it 'ruins' the games or anything. There's much bigger things to be worried about - the worst blight on this series so far is exploitative gacha monetization in the mobile games, and the biggest threat to future kh games (as with all squeenix properties) is nft scammery.

I'll say one thing about the mystery of the keyblade choosing their next user. BBS it unlocked the potential of them to use it. Terra's spell on Riku basically said if he's strong in heart, then the key will be there to guide his way.
"In your hand, take this Key. So long as you have the makings, then through this simple act of taking, its wielder you shall one day be. And you will find me, friend-no ocean will contain you then. No more borders around, or below, or above, so long as you champion the ones you love."

So how does that work when it was never supposed to be Sora’s in the first place, but Riku ended up getting a new keyblade anyway? They’re not the same keyblade, so did he just create a new one because that one didn’t want him? How does that make any sense

    • @theworstcatholic7247
      @theworstcatholic7247 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@BabyGirlTiny It makes sense, if not being a little convoluted. Riku would of gotten the key had he not given into darkness at the end of destiny islands, because of this, the key went to Sora at the time. Once Sora's heart proves stronger as Riku's falls deeper into darkness it becomes his permanently.
Riku is able to then control his darkness, and still use the light, he is able to make his own due to the fact he was destined to always have one anyways, along with the fact he knew how to use one due to prior experience. After all, keyblades are largely just the power of one's heart put into a weapon.

Xehanort does look really evil, it doesn't really have much to do with him being an old man. He wears black, looks demonic, and has yellow eyes. So I can see how someone could look at him see our heroes trusting him and then think "They're dumb".
I think the fact that they don't realise he's evil could've tied more into your point that they don't have much outside world experience, if anything.

    • @JoaderR
      @JoaderR 5 ปีที่แล้ว +42

Also, in their point of view, they know that Eraqus trusts Xehanort.
That fact, by itself, already makes them think like this: "Well, if our Master trusts him and if he's our Master's childhood friend, then Master Xehanort is trustworthy"
Aside from that, look at Terra's, Ven's, Aqua's and Eraqus' clothes. Now look at Xehanort's clothes. From that we can see that those types of clothes are normal for them and they probably see people wearing similar clothing everyday (even if no such people are ever referenced. They gotta have parents or something, right?)

There is a Character from an Anime I love that looks waaaay more evil than Xehanort and here persona would fit that of a sinister bad ass villain. It might just be because the main Characters are adorable little kids which makes things scarier then when the main characters are bad asses but she terrifying. But the twist is that she is actually a full on good guy helping out the little heroes with informations, training and a new weapon. In the backstory she also saved one of the main Characters when that main Character still was a baby and she has taken in a pupil she found on street giving that kid a home and education. So all things considered she is a pretty nice Character. The funny thing is she never drops her sinister villain like persona. I love this combination of kindness and sadism. I have a bit of a fable of good guys with villain charisma.

    • @lpfan4491
      @lpfan4491 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

many people roast the fact that xehanort just goes out and tells terra "eraqus does not know what he is talking about, darkness is where its at" and he instantly buys it despite having a bond similar to father and son with eraqus. however,he instantly is on board when eraqus then tells him that he is willing to give him a second chance and is terrified when he brought disgrace to everyone and was not able to control the darkness at the end of the the fight against braig. he still shares the same philosophy as eraqus, just not to the same degree of extremism and he disagrees in the way that he knows he is able to control the darkness and that he did actually do it,yet eraqus believes that that moment where it showed up alone is already a bigger sign of a possible problem even tho it is not.
what is interessting is that despite the secret reports revealing that xehanort suggested not giving terra the mark of mastery(as a way to set the events of the game in motion),the game never actively puts the blame for that event in particular on xehanort. that is because that was the first thought of eraqus anyways, just that he would have given terra the mark either way if he could justify it to himself, like he says himself. so xehanort just made what could have happened certain. i think bbs is written wrong in certain ways, but the things it did right are really well thought out.

To me, Birth by Sleep always struck me as the high-point in the series for how... "beautiful" it felt. It's not the most magical. It's probably not the best for most people. But I still find it captivatingly beautiful.
It doesn't have KH2's combat, but it's satisfying in an instant-reward kind of way.
It doesn't have as much Disney plot interaction as KH1, but it still has the worlds integrated well into the story.
It's debatable whether BbS or 385/2 have the more "emotional" ending, but I think that just shows how much impact both endings have.
The story pacing is steady (if a little bland) throughout the game, building towards a climactic finish that you can just FEEL coming as you play.
The characterization can be critiqued as being stiff, silly, or stupid, but I felt like it got the job done fairly well. You know what each character is about by the end of the game. What they did to reach their goals. How the heroes failed, and the villains (almost) succeeded. All of their plots intertwining and connected, coming together to bring about an incredibly strong finish.
Maybe it's just that I'm a sucker for tragedies, or at least endings where the protagonists have to make sacrifices to win. It feels like something more obtainable for me as a flawed person, something I can relate to moreso than a perfect victory. The ending's sheer success resonates with the other relative competency for the game to make it something like a very imperfect but treasured gem to me.

I'm really happy to hear a positive word put toward Sonic Adventure's storytelling! The game may have its awkward aspects but the techniques used in its storytelling in my opinion are without precedent. It honestly seems like what you're seeing is the characters' memories as opposed to what's actually happening. A subtle detail I noticed is that though Sonic and Tails' stories end at the same point, Sonic goes through to the Master Emerald shrine through the previously locked door, when you return there as Tails the door stays closed since Tails never remembered it being open. I wish I could see a new game tackle similar themes, maybe set up a mystery where every character sees the world a different way, since they only saw certain details happen and not others. I dunno, I love the idea and would kill to see it more often...

Very true the Land of Departure was an unhealthy place to grow up in. The trio had limited contact with other people, so naturally they gravitate towards each other, and have a blind faith in Eraqus’s absolute trust in the goodness of light and badness of darkness. When Terra loses faith, Xehanort is easily able to fill the void and tempt him into darkness. The four years Ventus spends at the Land of Departure are all he knows, so he bases his ambitions on those of Terra and Aqua. Once he’s free of this static environment Ventus is at a loss for what to do outside of do-gooding and embracing a dream as a Keyblade Master, eventually settling on making friends because he doesn’t have the capacity for independence. Aqua’s too busy cleaning up and chasing after Terra and Ventus to be introspective unlike the others, out of her element where she was pretty much the honour student at the Land of Departure.

It's...horrifyingly insidious how Xehanort manipulates Terra during his journey.
1: The first world he went to just happened to be where Maleficent, someone secretly collaborating with Xehanort, resides. When he opens the barrier to Aurora's room, Maleficent makes her intent clear before hypnotizing Terra into (seemingly) removing Aurora's heart. First thing he sees when he comes to is her heart in Maleficent's hands - what do you think he feels? Guilt. He doesn't get to see Aurora regain her heart (thanks to Ven and the good fairies) or her consciousness (thanks to Aqua and Prince Phillip). He's left with a regret that his darkness caused this.
2: As you said, learning that Eraqus sent Aqua to keep an eye on him made him get defensive, feeling like neither of them trust him to handle himself, and making him storm off. And while he was skeptical about Braig's claims of capturing Xehanort, he felt he had to make sure. What follows is an initially unfair situation - Braig threatens that Xehanort will get blown up if Terra approaches, giving him free reign to pepper him with magic arrows. This gets under his skin, so when he's given the okay by Xehanort to approach Braig and beat him up, he instinctively cuts loose, firing his first Dark Volley at the gunner. After that, he realized he had just succumbed to his darker side and worries that he had already let his master down. At this low point, Xehanort lifts his spirits by telling him that light and darkness are both best when in balance*, even (unofficially) dubbing him "Master Terra". With that bandage applied, Terra is now a little more used to wielding his darkness, if only to serve a better cause.
3: With Ven set to grill Eraqus for answers about what the x-blade is, Terra is sent to go save his friend. Eraqus is certainly a powerful opponent - so much so, that Terra is practically forced to channel more darkness just to match him. However, he stops attacking when Eraqus does, and the two start to reconcile. This doesn't gel with Xehanort's plans for Terra, so he takes another approach: _break Terra's heart as brutally as possible._ Cutting Eraqus down**, demolishing the Land of Departure, and then letting Terra reunite with Aqua and Ven at the Keyblade Graveyard, only to cut him off from them just as quickly - all of this to force Terra into a dire moment of desperation, enough to "let [his] whole heart blacken with anger" if it means a chance to stop Xehanort. And that is when Xehanort "truly won" - making Terra vulnerable enough for Xehanort to inject his own heart and soul into his body.
...Of course, his Plan A was hindered not only by Aqua and Ven breaking the new x-blade, but because Terra's soul ended up in his discarded armor and wore Terra-Xehanort down. But that's fine - he can still use Terra's body (and captive heart) for Plans B and C...
    * One interesting thing about Xehanort's dialogue in BBS is that he tells VERY few lies. He really does want the World's light and darkness to be balanced - he just doesn't say what he'd do to ensure that they are.
** Part of me feels like Xehanort felt he had to do this also to ensure that he himself has no more attachment to this World.

As far as story goes, I think this one goes near the top. The three characters are put through a ton and knowing that it doesn’t work out makes the struggle that much harder. I really struggled with the Command Deck gameplay, though. I don’t think a game has ever kicked my ass the way this game has, that includes Dark Souls. The amount of rage that I felt from being bad at this game was unparalleled by anything I’ve ever experienced in a game. It undercut the ending of the game when I finally beat the Terra part and was crying tears of joy from finally vanquishing the final boss, which is truly the hardest boss I’ve ever fought in any video game I’ve ever played. I think it’s important to know that my opinion is subjective. Other people may not appreciate it because other people probably got the hang of the gameplay better than I. I have not experienced rage in a video game quite like I did in this game and it loses a lot of points from me for that. I thought that since this game takes place first, it should be played first. After playing the rest of the series, I understand that it should absolutely be played after the secret ending of 2 when you’ve gotten used to the standard combat. Then you can appreciate the intricacies of shotlocks and the command deck. I’ll have to revisit it because I want to love this game the way I love Kingdom Hearts 1, 2, and 3 but as it stands, the story is the only part of it that I like. Still, I’m a pretty big fan of Kingdom Hearts. I didn’t like the gameplay, but I love the heart the game has. That’s what I love about Kingdom Hearts games. The story may be nonsensical if you didn’t play Kingdom Hearts 2.6 Re:Birth By 358/2 Dream Drop Memories Final Mix, but goddamn if the game doesn’t always wear its heart on its sleeve. Goddamn if KH2 isn’t a masterpiece

Awesome vid man, I gotta say I agree with pretty much everything, especially the analysis on each of their stories... THANK YOU for making a case for Terra, I've never really agreed with the merciless hate he gets. I'll always be very mixed on this game, but to be honest I tend to just keep what I like about it over what I dont. I do think the game overall was kinda hurt by being relegated to the PSP, it limited and changed the scale of what they could do with a game where you follow 3 character stories as separate campaigns, had it stayed a PS2 game I think would've resulted in a much stronger, or at least consistent quality-wise, game. But alas, this is what we have, and I honestly think its pretty strong all things considered, especially from a narrative standpoint, BBS has grown on me over the years despite how mixed it is for me and the fanbase in general.

I feel like it's absolutely necessary to point out that darkness doesn't necessarily equal evil. Darkness comes from negative emotions. tbh i personally found the repetition of most of the cutscenes to be pretty effective. most of the repeated cutscenes take completely different meaning and context depending on who's story perspective they come from - the radiant garden falling-out cutscene is different on all three watches because you have new context every time. from terra's perspective, you understand terra's frustration with eraqus and aqua's apparent lack of faith; then from ventus' pov, who really knows so much less of what's going on, you understand how shocking it is for him to suddenly see aqua and terra arguing after all of ven's naive and simplistic beliefs about their friendship; then from aqua's perspective, you watch with an understanding of WHY she was overly hash, because she's made by eraqus to feel like she, as the master and the star pupil, is bearing the weight/responsibility of keeping both of them safe which causes her to go about it the wrong way and try to interact with them as a stern master instead of as their friend and equal
incidentally i'm one of those people who loves bbs lmao it's my fav kh game. official bbs apologist

Before, I used to think that Birth By Sleep is up there with KH2 as a great game. But now, after comparing it to past KH games + getting knowledgeable about game design from numerous games, I found BBB as flawed half baked potential. I used to think that the story is the best in the series, but after thinking about everything overall (plus watching a specific video), the story feels undeveloped, especially with the main trio whose friendship feels unbelievable and rushed. That's what I think. Not a bad game, but looking back at it now, it could have been something greater.

  • @jbcatz5

Two notable casualties of the limited hardware are the NPCs and character models for the trio when there are flashbacks.
There’s a notable lack of NPCs outside of story required and Disney characters. Normally the lack of civilians makes sense in the worlds, but in Terra’s scenario both Castle of Dreams and the Coliseum draw attention to non-existent crowds.
The game begins four years prior to the main campaign, but none of the character models for Terra, Aqua, Ventus, Eraqus or Master Xehanort are adjusted to be four younger. It’s fine for Eraqus and Xehanort, as they’re already pretty old. However during the main campaign the main trio are teenagers or bordering on twenty, and unless the Land of Departure somehow slows the ageing process Terra and Aqua were very well physically developed in their teens.

probably my favorite trio, i just love all three of them to bits. and thank you for the terra defense, bc he didn't really do anything different from ven and aqua- essentially trusting and helping the first person they meet when entering a world. terra just got unlucky. in fact i never really understood the whole narrative that he has darkness inside of him, since he never came across to me as a twisted person. he always tried to do the right thing. (unless it's like everyone has darkness inside of them, but then why would that set terra apart?)
and honestly i love bbs gameplay the most, the control the card system gives you makes it so much fun.
