I think the connection to the movie industry needs to be majorly de-emphasized. There are very few books that keep their inflated spec value, after a movie has come out, no matter the movie's quality. There seems to be a time window, between the announcement of a movie (and related characters), and its release, that seems to be a free for all, price and spec wise...whereas on the release, these books crash hard. For example, obviously no one is looking around for the 1st Gor the God Butcher based off of that Thor movie, but also no one is looking around for the 1st Thanos either, because that movie and story's time has come and gone. It isn't that people are now 'tired' of it, it's just that they realize it is not a sound investment. Most comic channels only play up this short time 'bubble' period, and almost exclusively emphasize this supposed relationship between movies and comics. But, their hype is a lie, and the market is now coming to understand that. It is a total illusion that movies or tv cause books to rise in a permanent sense. This is only true with a few properties (notably TWD and Invincible, which are suspiciously owned by the same guy).
There probably is though, a vague relationship to bad films and the drop in prices in those brands. For example, do you think Crow #1 is going to go up because of this new movie...yeah, I don't think so, in fact I think you might even lose a whole grand off the price. So, there is that.
And, also as I mentioned in the last comment, yeah movies initiate certain comics being sent into CGC (and others), because people buy into the illusion that these books will go up in some permanent sense (which is unfounded). Many of these books will have been pressed. So, by definition, a lot of these 9.8's and 9.6's that had been pressed and 'made it through'...aren't actually 9.8's or 9.6's, and without that press, their true grade would have been lower...meaning that there's a further artificial inflation of the census just from that. And, as I mentioned before, there were law suits after the infamous coin bubble in the 80's that were centered around the 'overvaluing of goods' from grading companies, and that is exactly what is going on here. If a grading company is rating something a high grade *because* of a press (which essentially disguises the true flaws in a book)...then they are overvaluing the goods, by giving them higher grades than they should have. And this is extra suspicious since they do their own pressing as well!

Oh, I guess it's a fun coincidence that the guy running one of the coin grading companies back then (found liable) was the guy currently running Heritage Auctions.

I have been losing interest with my comic book hobby over the last 3 years. Comics were the first thing I ever collected growing up so it still holds a special place.
I, too, am a Spawn fan. I am hoping Todd will come up with a great storyline for his movie, and the interest will come back.
Or, maybe this is my cue to sell off and keep a handful to hang in the man-cave. Cuz, in the end, comics were meant to be read...😊
    Be a Blessing!!!

Insiders are saying that PSA will be grading comic books soon. Just another reason CGC values won't be able to hold up.

I let the hobby fund itself. I mainly collect Golden Age Comics. I do have some silver-modern era books BUT I only spend money within the hobby to grow my collection and I do not touch my 9-5 main source of income. Comics from 2019-2023 were my main source of income which helped me pay off my college debt, car insurance, car maintenance, and gifts and experiences with my loved ones. I agree we should see what happens.

The huge price difference in slabs vs raw in the resale market are ridiculous because the grades don't hold up over time - in the sense that (1) comics are always decaying and (2) they are physical so even a slabbed book can suffer damage inside the case - dropped or mis-stored or other horribles. I don't buy slabs in person unless the difference between it and a comparable ungraded comic is basically case cost and shipping cost or less. Only way I put my TRUST in a corporate grade is in circumstances where I know the book was slabbed for my specific transaction - otherwise I treat "grades" as suggestions.

There are rare and highly sought-after comic books. However, rarity alone doesn't always guarantee high value, though it holds true about 50% of the time. For a comic to command a high price, both rarity and demand must intersect, and this value can fluctuate based on the level of demand. Sometimes, high demand alone can inflate prices, as seen with examples like Spawn #1. Despite millions of copies being printed, a slabbed 9.8 copy still commands a decent amount of money.

I've been saying this on my channel for years that anything from the silver age to current is readily available. I've been buying more and more golden age since the comic book boom bc they are truly the only era thats rare. Do I buy from all eras? Absolutely, but I won't front like comic Tom and his patsy gem mint that these books on the hot 10 list he consistently reports on week after week are rare. They are all super common. Even an AF-15 is really common only difference it's really expensive to entry.

Indeed it’s there job to hype books up because they are dealers and need to pay the rent. And yet the ones who get deceived by there scoundrel ways are trhe ones who pay for it in the end. Which is why buy what you want not what some hype non rare books. You want investment quality books you’re gonna have to go into the golden age folks.

Impossible to predict. Nobody saw covid and the stimulus effect on the comic industry. I think things will level out and that'll be that. Certain characters and comics, even with the quantity on the rise, will appreciate as they have been and CGC has been truckin for 24 years and regardless of the scandals, they are still on top and are the gold standard for comic book grading. You do make a lot of interesting points and even though I agree with a lot of it, I don't think comics will just tank and ignore decades of slow and steady gains. Honestly, the beautiful thing about youtube is you can go back and just take a gander at what all of the speculators and prophets were saying in 2006. It's a great way to illustrate a point and hilarious at the same time. Long live the hobby and dry your tears people...and if you're really scared...sell me your books for tree fiddy and let me help you unload this awful burden.

The bright side I see for 2024 and beyond is the 🎉cautious optimism for the DC cinematic universe under the helm of James Gunn. Therefore, I will be grade submitting more DC key comics…especially Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman.

There are a lot of copper, bronze and silver age books that ARE rare in very high grade. Your argument falls apart right there. How many copies of HOS 92 in 9.8 are out there? Guys like this crying wolf are hurting the market more than helping. He should stick to his sports cards. Btw, cgc started grading comics in 2000, not 15 years ago.
