I keep saying this time and time again.. Using the #CGC & #CBCS Census/Pop to estimate a books print run and or overall availability in circulation is a slipper slope.. Moving on..
Sadly the more I get into the hobby...the more I want to get out of the hobby. All the business talk makes the hobby feel like a job and I already have one of those.
Treating comics like stocks and not treating it like art, story... the marriage of pictures and words leads to stuff like this.
I follow these channels for the entertainment.
Sometimes you learn something new too.
I’ve been collecting for 5 decades.
I’ve overpaid for pretty much everything.
I’m willing to be the highest bidder.
Everything I’ve bought over 5 years old has increased in market value over what I out bid everyone else at the top e for.
Literally everything but It’s not anymore for sale than the junk I just bought today on EBay.
I picked up a 1982 Graded He-Man Master of the universe action figure, a 1990 Bart Simpson “Cowabunga” sticker graded by PSA, and a 1970 pufnstuf ring that came as a prize in cereal back when I was a kid. I paid over $100 dollars for a toy that comes inside a cereal box FCS,lol. 🤣🤣🤣

I get Swaggy’s point. He’s right, people selling raw comics evaluate their raw copies and keep their price point close to their evaluations.
The people selling raw cards don’t take the time to evaluate their actual card, it’s look at the pictures and make up your own mind.
There aren’t as many novice sellers in comics because there’s little to no money in the majority of stock,imo.
As one of those older collectors, I usually go for ungraded because I want to have more $ left for more purchases. But that's easy and fast, and sometimes I like the presentation and packaging of a slab, but that's the exception, not the rule for me. There are about 50 books I know I should get graded, but the cost and time prevent me.
Not sure why you're harping on @Swaggs example or analogy on the raw vs PSA.. He (admits this) obviously is NOT a card guy and he was just using an example. I am watching the rest of this video..

Comic books don't have the same "raw" issues as sports cards. A single piece of cardboard is fairly easy to try and counterfeit, but almost no comics are forgeries. Sports cards require grading for key cards since there are so many fakes, but nobody questions comics unless they are so old maybe there is some restoration. I refuse to grade with CGC until they have a better case. I'm not slabbing comics just so they can bounce around inside the case. No thanks, I don't like buying graded comics for the same reason.
There is that famous cerebus the arrdvark book that was heavily faked.
I like when @collectibles Dad goes into the POV of money moving from Wall Street to Collectibles.. That is YOUR bread and butter, CD.

No funkos for me, I agree and believe they are comparable to a modern day 'beanie baby'. Not to take away from people just collecting them for the enjoyment though
But when did Beanie Babies, pet rocks or Pez dispensers ever have their own booth at a comic con? Take up half a comic shop? Never? I don't own any Funko Pops but they are marketed well, have nice clear cases, have numbers, celebrities, exclusives and rare variants. And it's 2024 and I still see Beanie Babies in McDonalds Happy Meals, at the grocery stores, Target, Walgreens, etc is that a fad? Beanie Babies have been around for 40 years is that a fad? Are those original Beanie Babies still worth a lot of money? The toy market hard to predict, Legos are worth investing, they sell super fast, everything else I mostly avoid.
It seems as if you're both hovering around the same points with different words. Bottom line, Economics 101, Supply and Demand
I am not familiar with the card market at all, so your comparisons to the comic space is informative. A TH-cam discussion on this topic with Mr. Swagglehaus would be an interesting watch. Thank you for the content.
Great video as always. I, like yourself, am into both sides, sports and comics. I agree with what you are saying, I think you were spot on. But the part I think no one is talking about is if we want to keep the market going and strong we need to bring in new collectors and how can we do that. These new collectors will grow up and earn their own money soon enough. How do we get them interested in our hobby, creating more demand for the supply that’s there? Maybe that’s a supply/demand bubble that’s just bound to take a hit, like you’re saying.
"Rare" all depends on how you define it. I would say that anything from 1960 - present is not really rare at all. What most people tend to mean is "hard to find one in top condition" or "hard to find one at a price I can afford". The important factor of rarity is not how many of an item exists - it's how rare it is to find the person who wants it and can afford to buy it all at the same time.
You are right on this Dustin. Loving your takes on the comic/collectibles side. I do feel like in many ways sports cards have been a little ahead of comic market since pandemic, making things easier to predict. Like you and Neo always say, people can say pay up or you’re not getting it…but it’ll just sit on eBay at ridiculous asking prices. If they reaaallyyyy wanna sell they will have to come down in value, especially if they have a ton to move. And that wILL hurt overall prices.
One of your better takes. These Bronze Age keys whether it’s 129 or others are not rare. I just checked eBay and 100+ 129 CGC graded are currently listed for BIN.

Yes, I do agree that there's going to be a movement towards more grading comics Just because it helps differentiate between a buyer and a dealer seller. What the grade is in that aspect it makes it easier but there are instances where it's not worth grading compared to the cost. And that's why the vast majority of comics just like cards are raw. I have long boxes of cards that I wouldn't dare grading because they are 10 to $0.20 in value and that's just the reality of it. But for the big key books, absolutely you're going to see more graded. But with that being said, you're also going to see more people attempting to fake just like we saw with the cgc scandal just like we saw in the late '90s with the Moreno family forging nearly 75% of signatures. That's why I got out of the card hobby. There were too many people trying to make a quick Buck. Putting one off on the casual buyer.
Prob with these hoarders is if their a border of those books there is plenty more still out there and that makes those books very volatile. Because eventually they will hit the market and the oversupply will outweigh the demand when the 💩 hits the fan. Don’t mind a few issues of a certain comic but 50 copies let’s say of Asm 129 is pure stupidity
Yes, if everyone is hoarding, you end up losing. You need to be the only hoarder of something that's valuable.
@@DanSchawbel On the flipside if everyone is hoarding a desirable item and not selling but you are willing to let go of stock, then you should win big.
I'll never understand cards and values being that they are literally nothing but a picture printed on cardboard, a physical nft you could say. No story, no artistic talent at all, very little work to produce where as a comic takes a hell of a long time to develop and put together before its produced for sale. Cards are just cards. Nothing to them.
The card of a player can bring back specific memories to some one. Hey I went to a game when I was 6. Now I'm 60. You see a card from back then and magic is made.

All about nostalgia, time-capsules memories from the past linked to the cards. Speaking from more a collector mindset of course.
Card values make way more sense in capitalistic economy. People spend millions of dollars buying ton packs and hunting down the rare cards and they are losing probably 75% of that initial investment. The cards have real value because of the money it takes to "pull" them from a pack. Comics are printed for pennies and sold to dealers, some catch on most don't.

With all the variants and the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and however many reprints they do within 2 months of a comic coming out is what;s gonna kill the market too. If I miss a 1st print. I know in 2 weeks a 2nd print will be out. lol
I have alot of fun collecting.. until i watch a youtube vid.. then it turns to economics. I think you have to ask yourself why youre collecting in the first place. If its solely based on "investment" then youre stupid. Theres 20 better ways to invest.
