Justice was my first real metal album. Picked it up when i was 11 and it's still my favorite tone ever recorded. To me that's exactly what metal should sound like and I've never heard it anywhere else other than that album. I know everyone laments the lack of bass but it gives the album a cold, crisp sound, you know, like steel left outside during winter.
Growing up on early Metallica, I wanted to play like Kirk. His recorded solos on all the 80s albums are memorable and creative. Yes, I know he copied a lot of Dave solos early on, but he also developed his own voice, and his solos on the 80s stuff were never boring or pedestrian. They had a structure to them. PS, now I'm going to re-listen to Garage Days Re-revisited.
They asked him to start the solos the same way Dave had been doing and then he could do his own thing later on, I’ve always understood this to mean play the beginning and the “hooks” of the solo like Dave did because those songs were at least a year or two old so people who’d been tape trading and attending shows knew the songs and I don’t think Kirk had a lot of time before he had to record the solos. I love Dave but I don’t agree with people who mention Kirk played Dave’s parts like Dave did as a knock on Kirk. He was basically a hired hand and did what he was told. Kirk always had interesting to great solos up until and including the black album. I haven’t been impressed by Kirk or Metallica as a whole since the Black album. I’m so old that the Black Album is “new” Metallica to me 😂
@@brandonjackson5865 Kirk definitely gives me the vibe of "no more f*cks to give" - Justice kind of feels like the end, like he'd said everything he had to say, and he'd be content to be a dad-rock / blues guy for the rest of his life.
What I Love about the rhythm guitars on that album are that they sound loud as fuck. You can hear the cabinets begging for mercy and I Love it. I hear it a lot on a bunch of old albums of that era. You can hear how loud the amps were. You don't get that so much anymore.
I have to give full credit to Bob Rock for that and also guiding their compositions. Have you heard the Guitar Center Sessions and noticed the amp tone differences between Kirk and Hetfield? Studios can save incompetent musicians 😂. I am talking about tone(and technique), not musical talent just to clear things up.

1988. I was 19 years old. What an incredibly beyond badass time to be alive for a late teen Metalhead. Especially if you lived relatively close to a metropolitan City, as I did. I lived 70 miles (112.6 Km) south of Chicago. Being all that said, I was a busy 19 year old metalhead in 1988. I saw Megadeth for the So Far, So Good, So What Tour. Slayer for the South Of Heaven Tour. And Metallica for the ...And Justice For All Tour. I remember that concert very well. Because it landed on Thanksgiving Day but unlike Megadeth and Slayer in Chicago this happened to be in Indianapolis at the Market Square Arena. And my mom wasn't very happy about it at all. But I knew she would get over it. Nobody opened up for them. They played almost 3 hours! I was higher than a Georgia pine too. Good times. No words can convey how much I miss those days. This is one of my favorite channels because I also play guitar and into every band that's been on here. I started playing in 1983. The concert stories I got, wow...but those are stores for another day. Right on & Circle of Tone on! \m/
I’ll never forget the first time I heard Metallica. 7th grade and I first heard of them entering a middle school which was full of headbangers wearing their shirts and the rest of the big 4. I went out and got justice and upon hearing Blackend it was game over. It’s been my favorite song since… my 2024 Spotify stats said I listened to it over 2100 times last year lol

Justice is the album that really highlights how dialed back James’ gain is. It’s his right hand (and the layered tracks) that gives it the perception of having a lot of gain.
Couldn’t agree more about this album being Kirk’s best work, Shortest Straw is still my favorite solo of his. Also, thanks for bringing up, “the Wait,” such an incredible song.
I have that Milton Keynes show on SBD bootleg. It's awesome. Apparently they were requested not to swear during the concert as it was broadcast on radio, but when the intro tape went out and the intro riff of Creeping Death stops (right before the main verse riff) James screams: "Fuck yeah motherfuckersssssss!!!!" Funny shit indeed. What's even funnier is that Megadeth were interviewed by Vanessa Warwick from Headbangers Ball at the same time (it's here on YT) and you can hear that exact moment in the background and the crowd goes apeshit (obviously), and you can see that Dave Mustaine just dies a little bit inside, since the interview got interrupted. 😆
Love the channel sir! I'm 50 and really relate to and had similar musical life experiences! When track 2 on Justice started I remember thinking WFT is going on?? And Justice For All ....pushed me into finding Dark Angel, Death and just heavier music to fill the void.
Garage days production is awesome for me, it sounds alive and the bass is just perfect . I wish they spent as little time when they did the Justice album.
Fair point but Metallica were on a mission of tightness at the time. They loosened up a bit on the black album technically but that went the opposite direction with radio rock production.
This Is the period that changed music forever. Garage, AJFA and Seattle was this period. Leads onto Cowboys From Hell, grunge, etc… you mention this as well towards the end. I was a little kid when One was released. Loved it, Didn’t have an album until 96… 8 years after it was over. But guitar music would never have survived without this era. Totally agree..... Everything after AJFA is garbage. I saw them, for 1st time, open for WASP, with Cliff at a bar in Shit. Louis, MO on RTL tour Feb 15th, 1985. Cost me $10. I was 17 and was best time of my life.. So blessed to have been able to live all this in real time. 1980 to 1989, best music ever created.. Also saw Dave and the boys open for King Diamond at bar in Shitcago. 🤘
My favourite solo is his Shortest Straw solo, plus the solo work in Helpless was fantastic. I like the tone on the EP better than ajfa, raw'er looser and yet tight as the same time. I like kirks playing on the solo in the Prince as well (thats a ripper riff to play too and those harmonies in the middle a thicc AF)
@@CIRCLEOFTONE Yeah, wasnt that the same with Slayer too? Kerry did all the recorded rhythms generally? I prefer the looseness of two disperate guitar rhythm parts from different players, little sloppier sounding but adds more layers of interest i reckon
Fyck yes The Wait is a killer song. It's my favorite song on Garage. Kirk's second guitar solo is even better on that song, in my opinion. Edit: also I know you're a huge fan and it makes it more fun that you say Lars's last name wrong. It's pretty fun.
I'm the same as you, loved the first 4, i bought garage days when it first came out, (might even have been the day it came out). Disappointed with the black album, maybe listened to it at home 3 times. Never bought any albums after that, certainly never put any of the other albums on on purpose. Great video. I subscribed.
The AJFA tone is easily my favorite tone to mess around with when I'm practicing. But the thing is, it is for a specific type of music. I can use it for tracks on The Black Album but for songs on the Loads it just doesnt work. James' current tone where he's mixing his Mk2C++ and Diezel VH4 (which by itself has an insane tone) is also just * chefs kiss * Sepultura pretty much copied the AJFA tone on Arise and it sounds brutal as f***.
Why has production lost all of its aggression? For example the sound of rock/metal albums until the 90s are all aggressive sounding and then everything for the most part sounds weak. Is it because of modern recording techniques like you’ve discussed in the past? I know Metallica is old af and they attempt to recycle their old riffs with their garbage new material but why don’t they also recycle those old classic tones to at least have a good aggressive sound lol
I think they don't have the fire/obsession of the past. I talk about the general issue in more detail here: th-cam.com/video/YCoqAjrGOo8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=uknHHf66FWfojOqU
@ yea that’s a great video. The most radical / shocking / controversial thing that can be done in rock and metal music today is simply writing a good song.
AJFA is the heaviest, darkest and best Metallica album. Note: I think I saw a Fleming R interview where he says the One solo was “composed” by Lars and Fleming by editing, i.e. by cutting out licks recorded by Kirk in different takes and stitching them together.
Yeah the guy who mixed it said there were so many tape cuts/edits. I've mentioned in the past that Kirk drops in multiple times on every solo which is why he can't play the solos live without flubs.
Bought AJFA in Pau (south France) on the French exchange in late 80’s whilst at Bishopston Comprehensive. I know that you will get the reference as a fellow Swansea boy Owen.
Hehe. My anti tech thing is because I was an early adopter to the DAW. We are talking dial up era when I was using early versions of long forgotten daw's. I watched as thousands of MASSIVELY talented guitarists got sucked into a black hole of obscurity getting obsessed with production, tone, drum replacement etc etc only to sound sterile and uninteresting.
Thank you for speaking up about how shitty the "And Justice For Jason" mix/rerecording is. I've seen recently a lot of people posting about buying vinyl bootlegs with that version and I just can't imagine putting money on that crap. If I wanna support Jason I'll buy one of the official records he's on that he actually earns money from.
Kirk used preset number 101 on the ADA. I messaged Nembrini do they have the presets and they messaged me this: The stock ADA presets are included with the plugin. To access them, simply click on the toolbar in the center of the plugin interface, and it will open the presets list for you to explore. You’ll find a variety of tones.
My favorite Badfinger track was always Day After Day. My dad was the guitarist for ? And The Mysterians who oddly was the first band to be called "punks"
@CIRCLEOFTONE Tom Morris, your right, for Blessed. Covenant was Rasmussen. When Morris was brought up made me think Jim Morris. No your right Tom Morris.
I played a show as a two piece because my bass player was a no show (he got arrested fighting in a wedding) so i told the crowd we were an And Justice for All tribute band.
I remember feeling super deflated after hearing Justice for the first time. After previously only ever owning vinyl and cassettes, ...And Justice for All was my very first CD. At the time, my young brain literally couldn't understand how the production on a cheap E.P. recorded as a bit of a fuckabout could sound a million times better than their official new album!?!!? It was fkin' bamboozling.
Those were the days! I was right there with you, buying these albums the day they came out. I saw them with Cliff when they opened for Ozzy, and I was at the Monsters of Rock show in LA when a riot broke out. But now? Meh. The new stuff just isn't doing it for me.
I was close to the front when Metallica came on and the crowd was like a wave that moved us around, ended up losing my mates and didn’t see them til we got on the coach, killer day though.
I was at the Bowl too. I was a huge Megadeth fan, and remember them sounding pretty anemic, same with Diamondhead. Metallica rocked it, but I do think they had the advantage of some PA volume.
? 31:21 you can hear I'm not using a LOT of gain. I'm digging in to get chugs etc. Listen to his original (I'm in a different tuning so compensate for that) and we have similar gain th-cam.com/video/tzSNjiXWCGk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=NLTpiiN4GE01L1oa
Justice for Jason is mixed too far the other way, if you have a look around youtube there are more balanced mixes people have done and it's unbelievable how great it sounds with just well-mixed audible bass... despite it not being perfectly played! th-cam.com/video/RpAVQ5b4814/w-d-xo.htmlsi=cLkbY9eNNtMD9kll
Kirk wrote such bangers back in the day… He’s such a mystery as far as guitar legends go… Probably the most dramatic fall off I can think of… Which I understand getting older and not caring about speed and all that but it’s more than that, it’s like he’s a different player altogether.
@ yep! Just the most low effort stuff ever. But back in the day when I was a kid listening to justice I put him up there with anyone. He was just another one of the greats back then…
AJFA pissed me off the first time I listened to it because of the missing bass Lars was definitely more than trolling guy was a ruthless bully towards Jason
If you or anyone thinks Garage Days Re-Revisited is underrated, you neither were, nor have talked with anyone who was, there listening to the band during that time period. It's highly regarded by many who came up with the band since Cliff was with them.
Relatively the industry, guitar forums, the public in general cream over the black album relative to garage days. It's like your social media feed. Because it's beloved in your circle most of the world are listening to Bad Bunny, Drake etc
I did a "Fan Remastered" version of the entire And Justice For All album myself the best I could, including The Prince and Breadfan. Wanted to hear it with some bass in it that sounded more natural. th-cam.com/video/GatGKwdOC0M/w-d-xo.html
Those drums were so cut and pasted, it’s ridiculous. It’s my favorite album, but that’s not real performances. Props to the dude that cut the takes together.
Kirk gets way too much shit and so does Lars for his drumming. My favorite _metal_ band is Slayer. But I think ALL Slayer solos are utter shit. Slayer would be better without those annoying, unmelodic and pointless shreds. Kirk's solos at least have some point and carefree _rock_ to them.
@CIRCLEOFTONE hahaha, would you like an English response or a South African one? Great video nonetheless. It has its flaws, but I'm here for education right...

Epic. What a time to be young eh?
totally agree with you, new subscriber ❤
HiThanks for subscribing. It means a lot.
Yep all valid. I think Garage days may be more loose because both Kirk and James are playing ryth. It's usually just James.
@@CIRCLEOFTONE Yeah, wasnt that the same with Slayer too? Kerry did all the recorded rhythms generally? I prefer the looseness of two disperate guitar rhythm parts from different players, little sloppier sounding but adds more layers of interest i reckon
Dyers eve is his craziest solo, the licks on it was nuts.
Fyck yes The Wait is a killer song. It's my favorite song on Garage. Kirk's second guitar solo is even better on that song, in my opinion. Edit: also I know you're a huge fan and it makes it more fun that you say Lars's last name wrong. It's pretty fun.
26:57 yo that was out of no where but cool 😎
I'm the same as you, loved the first 4, i bought garage days when it first came out, (might even have been the day it came out). Disappointed with the black album, maybe listened to it at home 3 times. Never bought any albums after that, certainly never put any of the other albums on on purpose.
Great video. I subscribed.
Thanks for subbing man. I knew it was 100% over when I Dissappear came out
Easiest is probably harvester of sorrow. Hardest, I consider blackened, shortest straw, dyers eve equally difficult.
The AJFA tone is easily my favorite tone to mess around with when I'm practicing. But the thing is, it is for a specific type of music. I can use it for tracks on The Black Album but for songs on the Loads it just doesnt work. James' current tone where he's mixing his Mk2C++ and Diezel VH4 (which by itself has an insane tone) is also just * chefs kiss *
Sepultura pretty much copied the AJFA tone on Arise and it sounds brutal as f***.
Lar's drum machine was at its peak on this album
Heavily gated and multiple edits and takes. That tape saw more razors than an Edward scissor hand job. It's why I included Garage days in this video.
@
yea that’s a great video.
Loved re Revisited when I was a kid. Whole thing is nasty
It was captured perfectly. The bones of the track.
Bought AJFA in Pau (south France) on the French exchange in late 80’s whilst at Bishopston Comprehensive. I know that you will get the reference as a fellow Swansea boy Owen.
Lol it's been a long time since I heard that word.
God i love your videos, the mix of TOAN and history, mixed with your cynic humor and boomer metal takes. You da mvp
@CIRCLEOFTONE and everyone I show your vids to agrees with me after I show them some examples
Awesome video. 100% agree on Ulrich - massively underrated by many knowing non drummers 😬! Great stories too - lucky bugger 😉!Cheers🤘👍
Yesh!!!!!!! 😊nice tokai.
Plus the bass is TOO loud 😅
@CIRCLEOFTONE Yeah, it sounds like whoever did it just put the bass track on top of the original mix.
Awesome video. Do you have more info on the ADA settings? I have the Nembrini plugin but struggling to get a tone like that.
Kirk used preset number 101 on the ADA. I messaged Nembrini do they have the presets and they messaged me this:
The stock ADA presets are included with the plugin. To access them, simply click on the toolbar in the center of the plugin interface, and it will open the presets list for you to explore. You’ll find a variety of tones.
Cheers fella
My favorite Badfinger track was always Day After Day. My dad was the guitarist for ? And The Mysterians who oddly was the first band to be called "punks"
Very cool. Some say Badfinger was the first Power Pop band.
"I do sound like kirk hammet." - owen gibbons December 12th 2018
Lol deep cut
@@CIRCLEOFTONE😂😂
I remember when you said that because I died laughing lmao
Flemming Rasmussen also recorded Morbid Angel Blessed are the Sick and Covenant, thier magnum opus albums before Gatesways.
@@azforu29 Really? I thought Blessed was a Morrisound mix? I thought Tom did it.
@CIRCLEOFTONE Tom Morris, your right, for Blessed. Covenant was Rasmussen. When Morris was brought up made me think Jim Morris. No your right Tom Morris.
Always felt Kirk was a bit squirrely but, somehow fit the bill.
*insert expected crack about the bass tracks for AJFA* 😆
I played a show as a two piece because my bass player was a no show (he got arrested fighting in a wedding) so i told the crowd we were an And Justice for All tribute band.
Finish it!
Bow to the Phantom Lard
😂
Great stories!
Danzig debut was my first ever CD. Glorious sounding.
Is there any way I can contact you?
@@cjmpyt yep in the description there is a link to the facebook group
Do immortal, emperor, or dimu borgir tones?
I did immortal: th-cam.com/video/0gZt5RNy6YA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=09FFiOPxM1aOpyBz
@CIRCLEOFTONE subbed
Owen, when are we getting another type o negative video? Itll be 15 years since the big man left us in April.
I just bought his Peavey mk iv bass head so as soon as I get it...
@@CIRCLEOFTONE excellent. Looking forward to it. Great to have you back.
Those were the days! I was right there with you, buying these albums the day they came out. I saw them with Cliff when they opened for Ozzy, and I was at the Monsters of Rock show in LA when a riot broke out. But now? Meh. The new stuff just isn't doing it for me.
YESSSS!
I agree. Everything after justice is a hard pass for me. Maybe a couple of riffs on Death magnetic but that’s about it.
Hell yeah
Badfinger... great band
He did kinds Plato a bit playing wise he isn't as driven as young kurk james has improved big times
Call of Ktulu's solo sounds like it was influenced by Rock Lobster
Lol what? Didn't he have like 3 strings? 😂
Never even heard of The Wait. And I thought I was an okay-ish Metallica fan.
You are in for a treat. That old EP is awesome. Put it in your Playlist.
Blackened is tops for Kirk
The overtones on the last second of his solo was GOLD
For the algorithm, I like death magnet 🧲
Mate I saw at Milton Keynes bowl too! 93 or 94 if I recall
I was close to the front when Metallica came on and the crowd was like a wave that moved us around, ended up losing my mates and didn’t see them til we got on the coach, killer day though.
@@xklopanIt took me FOREVER to find my coach. Luckily half of the bus were as drunk as I was so the driver was forced to wait
Hard to disagree, The Wait is a great cover and solo!
I was at the Bowl too. I was a huge Megadeth fan, and remember them sounding pretty anemic, same with Diamondhead. Metallica rocked it, but I do think they had the advantage of some PA volume.
Yep 100% megadave got screwed by the pa
He never really shredded in the way that others of the time did, fast pentatonic licks under wah is not really shredding IMO
Yeah not quite Shrapnel level but imo his were fast and more memorable than pure shred
The original sound has way less gain and is compressed, not heavily. It’s a very clean lead tone.
@ I hear ya. Not critiquing you. Just saying….
Rhythm tone is all Hetfield
His fingers are golden
Lars Erlick and Kirk 'ammit
Lol stupid names anyway.
Well you try it with a fuckin' Welsh accent, boyo!
when did he shred?
3:14 isn't exactly pedestrian. Not all shredding is Jason Becker level.
@@CIRCLEOFTONEyeah I have serious issues with people being unable to accept playing underneath Yngwie or Becker or Impelliteri.
Agreed
I hated AJFA back in the day - Still do and every album that followed it. Ride was peak Metallica for me.
Ride is hard to beat
Did the Facebook group get nuked?
Nope check the link at the bottom of the description
@@CIRCLEOFTONE I think I'm blocked for some reason, I sent you a message on IG
Kirk wrote such bangers back in the day… He’s such a mystery as far as guitar legends go… Probably the most dramatic fall off I can think of… Which I understand getting older and not caring about speed and all that but it’s more than that, it’s like he’s a different player altogether.
Agreed. He went from. Writing interesting solos to off the cuff blues scales.
Yep. Lars was lucky he didn't hire a Peter Steele who would have stomped him into Valhalla.
@@CIRCLEOFTONE Who? *LOL*
If you watch/listen to old gnr gigs in the 80's slash is constantly out of tune!
I did a "Fan Remastered" version of the entire And Justice For All album myself the best I could, including The Prince and Breadfan. Wanted to hear it with some bass in it that sounded more natural.
th-cam.com/video/GatGKwdOC0M/w-d-xo.html
THERE IS A SWANSEA!!! 😂
I was wondering if anyone would spot that ref. th-cam.com/video/mN3A0qbq6yM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=0WW2B18PuJH60G8M
I still think Jaymz used a Jackson on this album.
Those drums were so cut and pasted, it’s ridiculous. It’s my favorite album, but that’s not real performances. Props to the dude that cut the takes together.
@@coreybrown3572 That's gating. Kinda cheating but they were 100 take wonders.
Bull
Dave is that you?
@CIRCLEOFTONE hahaha, would you like an English response or a South African one? Great video nonetheless. It has its flaws, but I'm here for education right...
@CIRCLEOFTONE let me clarify. The "Bull. " referred to it being the best Metallica tone, which is my opinion completely.
Finish it!
