Tom had no fancy gimmicks, no ego trips, no extravagant stage shows, and that's what I love about him. Just a hell of a nice, cool, funny, laid back guy, who wrote the best songs, and enjoyed what he did. I am so greatful I was alive at the same time as this wonderful soul and got to enjoy his masterpieces. He knew what he wanted in life, went for it and achieved it
I love when he says how shy he is, how he wants to hear hits when he goes to concerts so yeah, he’ll play hits for the audience . This is just such a low key natural conversation, it’s a far better interview than it seems at first. He says so much in that easy way of his. How can you not just love him?
Wrote songs from life . Great song writer never sold out on his music 🎶. He will live on thru his songs. We lost so many great rock and roll musicians now. He is missed but not forgotten. So lucky 💓 I got to be around his music 🎶.
I miss this man so much it hurts! I'm so grateful he touched our lives with his incredible gifts of music and even just such an interesting presence and voice. RIP Tom Petty 💙
Tommy always reminded me of the early lines of Bruce Springsteen's Candy's Room: "There's a sadness, hidden in that pretty face. A sadness all her own, that no one can replace." I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that in him. :-)
Such a fun interview-her questions were well thought out and didn't feel so scripted, and he was so laid back and engaged with her. He was one of the coolest mofos ever, such a cool rock star. He was a wonderful lyricist and songwriter, and his death hit me hard. We shared a birthday.
Da bink da bunk, da bink da bunk....LOL Tom, was so relaxed during this interview. Have listened to this at least a half dozen times and it never fails to make me smile.
Thanks for posting this, Allyn. I never saw this one before. Lisa Robinson was a legendary rock journalist back in the day. She really brought Tom out of his shy, self-conscious self, in the best way. Tommy, you may be gone from this realm, but certainly never forgotten. My love. ❤️💘💞💔💖🎸🎼
My favorite era of Tom's career and life, he was cool AF especially in the early-mid 80s and everything about Southern Accents just fascinates me. It really was one of their experimental albums and my first memory of Tom's music was being spooked by the "Don't Come Around Here" video on VH1!
I get what you mean about being spooked by it, but for me it was the Music, firstly that 'spooked' me.(It was the sitar ..being an alien instrument I reckon) But I loved its tempo. It really winds up & kicks ass! A really fucken sad loss to lose a good honest bloke..& to not havin Tom still creating.❤🎩
This is the genius! So great watch this beautiful musician talk music. Yes, you are likable Tom and humble with so much growing ahead. The camera guy is having is having a blast with close ups! I thank you for that!! Thanks Allyn for your post. :)
Wow! What a great interview. Tom so relaxed and forthcoming. So interesting, and he looks and sounds so well and together. A magical find, Allyn, slam dunk into my favourites! Southern Accents is such a brilliant album too. Thank you sooo much xx
@Allyn Kessler Your page is absolutely outstanding. The material you have on here is a treasure trove of solid gold. Tom Petty is one of the greatest musicians of all time. I could watch his interviews all day every day.
Fantastic interview!! I'm sure I watched it when it originally aired, but haven't seen it since. OMG we need to find that live album that he spoke about being "mixed and sitting on the shelf ready to go with material from 1977-83". I need to hear that!!!!!!!
My God, the treasure trove that must be the archive of music he left behind that never saw the light of day. Fortunately this means that we will still have years of music to be released.
We had an independent TV station (remember those?) that aired Night Flight. It was such a cool show. I was just a little to young to get much of the content. I wish it had stayed on the air in my later teen years. I remember the great music clips. Tom is (as always) the coolest.
DO you have Pack up the Plantation? It was a 2 LP live album. I wish I still had it on vinyl, the CD is missing a few tracks. I wish all those unreleased songs he talked about would get released.
This is great interview, good questions and answers. It's quite long, too. I'm wondering what point in his recovery he's at in this video. He's very subdued but still so interesting and engaged with the conversation. Going through the playlist is also fascinating, to see this wonderful man at different points in his life and to see what parts of his personality change with time and circumstance and which are constant.
My theory is he wrote You Got Lucky about Mike that’s why they didn’t play it for so long. Mike wrote Boys of Summer and tried to give it to The Heartbreakers and Tom didn’t feel it so Jimmy Iovine recommended Don Henley and it was the biggest hit of his solo career. There was a lot of pressure to follow up Torpedoes and there definitely was some jealousy involved. Mike will never admit but I’ve read enough to have a strong argument. The fact is they both got lucky and we the world got lucky. Such a great band.
Him wrapped in the Confederate flag would be cancel worthy now. I’m from not far from where Tom grew up and there was no racism in his thoughts or anyone’s. That was being southern then. Times change fast.
He himself raised the topic at a concert a few years back when a fan threw a Confederate flag bandanna at the stage. He stood on stage, picked it up, and basically announced that they now realized it was not such an innocent symbol and that they weren't doing that any more.
He wouldn't be canceled because he wouldn't lose any fans. His fan base always knew he never meant any harm by it. And frankly, bblk ppl and radical leftists were never fans of his in the first place.
The doctor that gave this man fentanyl for a hip problem should be in a prison cell. He robbed us of even more amazing music and God knows what great songs. Fentanyl should be for palliative care only. God bless you, Tom. We miss you.
Ya Tom Petty got that right to if I'd gone sean Tom Petty-HB I want to hear all my best FAVS.songs got many to, be listning-playing Tom Petty HB songs FOREVER.............
This interview is from 1985. He might be talking about the concert video called Pack up the plantation. It was released in 1986 as both a DVD and a CD.

Feeling the same !!! He was really special, badass, talented, authentic...awww i miss him
In his heart I believe Tom was just a “ good ol boy” from Gainesville Florida! A beautiful, talented soul who touched us all with his music!
Tom Petty the coolest dude ever!
Totally agree
Yes! He most certainly is.
I miss him. 🎩
It's called drugs.
I love his smile even before he got his teeth straightened and whitened. He just looks so cute and angelic in this interview.
Great interview! Beautiful Tom. So humble, and really a common man with extraordinary talents and soul.
Love when he says, "I think I enjoyed the show as much as the audience.." so true!
He was just darling. Has a sadness in him, yet he makes me feel so happy.

Glad I got to live at the same time as this guy. Loved his music probably since the first time I knew what music was...
Da bink da bunk, da bink da bunk....LOL Tom, was so relaxed during this interview. Have listened to this at least a half dozen times and it never fails to make me smile.
I remember buying this album at the record store as a teenager. The cashier was impressed with my purchase:)
This is just so weirdly wonderful. I love it. Thank you thank you.
Really miss his songwriting abilities. One of a very few with his talent.
I second that
I honestly love you buddy. You're still alive to me.
Well, this here is a gold nugget.
great interview. thanks. TP never changed. always cared about the music and craft.

A great interview getting into the 'mind' of Tom. The right questions produce great interviews, and this is done well this time!
Jacki Stevens totally agree, he was a fascinating man in this period. When he insulted songwriters, he was sitting on 10 more years of hits.
fabulous man inside and out.
Petty is real. He talks about things everyone knows but feel they are too cool to discuss, yet it’s that very thing that makes Tom cool 😎
Genius. Simple genius.

He was super laid back in this interview, like talking in your living room. 'cept for all those cigarettes.
Someone needs to dig into that live album he's talkin' about & release it
DO you have Pack up the Plantation?

Allyn, where are all your great videos? Come back.
And I absolutely adored the Eurythmics ad well I still do. I mean everybody loves Annie Lenox. Whew...

I'd love to know him. I wonder if he has other interests besides music.
