This is a big help! I bought the same Pokémon GBC second hand a few years ago & ended up with the same issue. I didn’t realize changing out the speaker was such an easy fix! Thanks!!
My Game Boy Color has a problem: The speaker works very quietly, and I can hear some crackling-noising sound. I can hear sound only if putting GBC right next to my ear, and it's kinda distorted. But headphone jack works perfectly fine, and when I want to play some of my games at home, I connect my console to these bigger speakers that I often use with my PC. What can be the cause? Do I need to replace the speaker?
LarBob Doomer Well, I lost my Nintendo-ish screwdriver (the one with three... wings? legs?) Anyway there is currently no way to disassemble the device. I'm also wondering why so much GBC's are suffering the speaker "cancer". Does it have to do something with new case design? Or Nintendo used cheaper materials to make these? I did never meet any sound problems with Classic, or Advance, so why Color?
+Robciomixxnfs In your case, if the headphone jack works fine, then the problem is with the speaker itself. My understanding is that the problem is due to adhesive inside the speaker getting old and failing.
I have a low buzz in my speaker, and when I use headphones the buzz is extremely pronounced (in the headphones), which is so loud that the headphones are unusable, even though I can still hear some game audio. Any suggestions as to what's wrong?
I'm having the same problem and am currently investigating. I don't think it's the speaker. Volume is low on speaker, buzzing sound and only sound in one actual channel in headphones.
Thanks a lot, I'm glad I'm not the only one suffering from faulty GBC speakers. My childhood Lime green's speaker stopped working after all these years. I was very upset about that too. Now I have it working! I just wonder why it happens so specifically to the GB Color.
You are the man, Very happy i subscribed sometime ago. I use your channel as a common reference point for my own DIY projects. Thank you so much, and keep up the awesome work!
you can also use a ds lite speaker which is much louder and better quality than those ones from ebay, which is exactly what i did since i had a few extras laying around, only problem with that is, is that you need to cut plastic on the case
This is fantastic! Thank you. I have that exact Gameboy so I am delighted it can be revived. However my headphone jack buzzes like mad, what is up with that?
My game boy color speaker works and so does the headphone jack, but when I plug my headphones in I hear the game but I also hear a very loud buzzing in the background, is there a fix for this?
Exact same issue, except my GBC is a Tommy Hilfiger Edition. Thank you for helping me find the issue and understanding the problem with putting after-market parts in a collectible console. 😂
I have an atomic purple gbc that had no sound out of the speaker. It had a broken trace that went under the cartridge connector from the headphone jack to the sound amp chip. I ran a new wire to it and put the board in a grape case so it wouldn't show. Same board wouldn't power up because of a corroded via between select and start.
my DMG has a speaker issue. the headphone jack works fine. the speaker is either quiet or crackling. and if the battery is low it crackles even if the volume is all the way down. im gonna replace the speaker
I haven't been able to find info about this across the net so I'll ask here just in case you might know. My GBC has a "buzz" to the sound from both the speaker or the headphone jack. Which I think would indicates that it's something about "how" the system perceives and sends the audio out. Any idea what that might be from and how to fix it? Thanks!
That's a sweet Gameboy color display. I just got the dandelion and Berry color in the mail today I have six of them I have the clear purple one too and that's exactly what I'm going to make
When the speaker is extremely quiet it's almost certainly because its adhesive failed and the voice coil separated from the diaphragm. You can simply use superglue to get them back together and working, though I don't know how permanent of a fix it is. Like you said, GBCs with no sound are common but I couldn't find a single solution except replacement until I figured out the cause. If you still have the speaker you replaced and feel like it's up your alley you could make the first video with a no parts or soldering fix for this.
What about a speaker that works after the gameboy pocket warms up? I turn on my gameboy pocket and no sound initially. After maybe 10-20 seconds later the speaker then begins to work. What do you think is causing this issue?
Please take the board out of the plastic shell before soldering anything, special your rare and valuable special editions. I know someone like you probably is confident enought to not burn the plastic shell by accident, but I don't think is good practice or that it should be shown in a tutorial. I've seen before plastic burns due to this very practice.
hey, i have a question! Can you pplease tell me what can be the problem? I have a classic gameboy and it makes some strange oise from the speaker! Some cartrige/game makes louder noise some dont. Its so anoying. And it dont gets louder or quiter if i turn the volume knob.
My recent GBC pick up: Headphone jack works (audio is very dirty...high pitched whining noise in the background) but the speaker doesn't work. Replaced the speaker, still nothing. Tested all the connections for the speaker and jack; all good. So I'm guessing capacitor issue?
I got my GBC new when it came out, but it has been showing some problems with the sound for the last 10-15 years. I will be able to hear sound while I play only if it is on either max volume or 3/4 of volume. If I put it on either 1/2 or 1/4 of the volume I will not hear anything. The other problem that I have is that somehow no AA batteries will last enough. Whenever I put new batteries, they ALWAYS last a short time, and I am not sure if that could be a problem with the batteries input, the power switch, or just the red light near the screen. Is there anything I could do to fix that?
I have the same exact Pokemon edition Gameboy & it has the same exact problem. This video was extremely helpful for me I appreciate it alot. I know where I can buy an abused gbc for $8 too
On my Game Boy Color speaker there are small side noises, but I can hear them just by bringing GBC to the ear. But the main problem with the headphone jack. if I connect the headphones, I hear loud noises instead of pure music. What should I do? I would be happy if you could help.
What happens if i get sound, but once the volume rocker is full, the sound gets a bit quieter? Also when the volume is full and headphones are plugged in, the audio cuts to one side
My GBC volume is very low even turned all the way up, compare to my DMG is day and night difference. I did replace the speak however still very low volume. Any help please?
Does anyone know the standard wattage for a gbc speaker? I've scrounged the internet and I can't seem to find any real answer. I have an 8 ohm 0.5 watt replacement speaker, but I need to find out if that is appropriate for the unit.
Just picked one up too from Goodwill in Hudson, WI. Mine has the same problem. I hope this is all that's wrong with it as I'm getting some buzzing on my headphones, but as I read from comments below it could be the fault of the headphones I'm using that have a microphone (TRRS).
Ive seen 15min youtube tutorials that arent as well explained or as comprehensible as this one thats 1/3 the time. Thank you so much! Now Im confident that i can repair my speaker! 👍
I'm a big fan and the production value of your channel is amazing! I have a question; with the Pokemon GBC or GBA there's art design going on the outer lense itself, which you can't replace if it's scuffed because that's that lense art design is the main feature of the limited edition! So, is there anyway of removing those scuff marks while retaining the design? Thanks and keep up the good work :)
Thanks for the kind words! That's a great question -- you may have noticed in the video my GBC has scratches on the screen too. I've had good luck using a very light abrasive polish like Brasso to remove fine scratches. It may not work well on big/deep scratches, and I would avoid the parts of the screen where there's the art design, but it's worth a shot. Good luck!
Hi, I'm pretty sure you've been asked this before, but do you know if a guide to fix the headphone jack of a GameBoy Color? I just bought one off of eBay that said it has sound problems with the speaker and the head jack so I would like to know. If you don't then thank you for looking at this.
How would I fix this problem? So my speaker I know works but I don't hear sound EXCEPT the extremely rare chance when I actually get working audio is this a speaker or audio jack issues and how do I fix it
+Psytastic I'd start by checking/cleaning the headphone jack first. A quick shot of electrical contact cleaner spray may be all it needs. After that, I'd inspect the solder joints between the logic board and speaker, as long as you know the speaker itself is working correctly. Good luck!
I have a similar problem with my dmg Original gameboy ,the speaker is not working and i replaced it but its still not working. Do You have a solution for my problem ?

too bad you never went over fixing the headphone jack itself.. I found a problem same problem with one that I'm fixing, and then recalled seeing this video. Do you know of a good way to fix the headphone jack, if it's possible? Thanks.
B-Rad Gaming Fixing the jack itself is pretty difficult as it's pretty much one molded piece. You might be able to stick a tiny piece of sandpaper between the contacts that control whether sound goes to the headphones or speaker, but the more surefire way to fix it would be to just replace the jack. Good luck!
+B-Rad Gaming I don't know if you still need help with this, BUT if it's a contact issue, you can use a dremel with a polishing tip. The tip you want to use is white cotton - just fit it into the headphone jack and turn the dremel on for a few seconds; then blow into the headphone jack ALA classic NES. Should clean up a poor connection and you've got a "like-new" assembly! Failing that, replace the headphone jack.
im a fan of your work even though i just sub recently and i have an out of the box question sorry i have this nintendo ds and i wanted to change the case but i cant because the tri screw bolt's hole is destroyed and it became a circle i cant pull out the screw. How do i pull the bolt screw out?
I have the same pokemon gameboy and the sound doesn't work on it either. The only difference is I live in Australia meaning I have the pal version which has meowth instead of Togepie.
I am disappointed with your video. You left loose ends. You mentioned the possibility that the problem consists of quiet, distorted sound... yet you never got back to that issue, to say whether it requires a speaker replacement or what. You only covered the headphone jack issue and the no-sound issue.
It's very likely legit, though there have been some 3rd party replacement screen covers with that design so it's hard to tell if it is one in the video. But why I think it's legit is due to the scratches as it indicates a lot of time/handling as the original was made many years ago. If you didn't know, there were five Pokemon versions made: One that had the light for Pikachu's cheek with a Pichu, the other for a Pokeball like you see here. Then there was a Pokemon Center exclusive that had Pikachu, plus the 3 Johto starters, but nothing special for the light itself as it was standard. Then a version with Pikachu and the 3 Kanto starters, but with odd white outlines, again having a standard light area. Finally a CoroCoro 250th issue one with various Pikachu designs on it and the standard light area. Edit: Wait, I looked it up to be sure, there's 3 more than the 5 I mentioned for a total of 8: -Clear green/white with Pikachu/Meowth and Jigglypuff. -Clear blue/white with the same screen lens as the green/white. -Orange/blue with the odd white-outlined kanto starter screen cover one.
This is a big help! I bought the same Pokémon GBC second hand a few years ago & ended up with the same issue. I didn’t realize changing out the speaker was such an easy fix! Thanks!!
Bought a GBC off the internet and it had lousy sound. Problem was metallic dirt pinching the speaker diaphragm against the magnet.
I love your videos, they are extremely helpful, and your delivery of information is pleasant. Thanks for what you do.

You will had to do the "mod pro sound" all gameboys had that buzzing on the earphones jack, from the DMG to the GBA
does your headphones have a mic?
Same
It's completely normal , there's a pretty easy mod called "Internal pro sound mod" if you want to fix that
