  • Deep in the distance, the forests of Yellowstone endured wildfire -- smoke diluting the Big Sky with a gentle, silver matte. Steve Young stood beside the loop-top wire fence which corralled our makeshift studio. His mannerisms seemed to breathe the landscape as he subbed sneakers for a pair of black leather boots purchased earlier in the day. Accompanied here by his son -- singer/songwriter in his own right -- Jubal Lee Young, the two carve a routine from their lifelong body of work overlooking Livingston, Montana at the head of picturesque, Paradise Valley.
Young was born in Georgia and migrated throughout childhood between Alabama, Georgia and Texas as his family looked for work. By the time he had completed high school in Beaumont, Texas, he was playing guitar and writing songs which incorporated influences of folk , country , gospel, and blues musicians and people like Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and others. Once as a teenager he was blown away by seeing Carlos Montoya, a Flamenco Guitarist.
By his late teens, Young was back in Alabama, where he established some reputation on the local music scene. However, the wandering spirit soon took over again. He immersed himself briefly in the Greenwich Village folk scene, at a time when Bob Dylan and others were just being noticed. Returning to Alabama, Steve found that "my New York folk-protest songs didn't fly in the South." Searching for more receptive audiences, he made short forays to California and other locations before moving to the West Coast in 1964.
In California, he worked with musicians like Van Dyke Parks and Stephen Stills, at one point holding a day job as a mailman. A major-label record deal led to a short-lived stint with a psychedelic country-folk band, Stone Country. Settling into a solo career, Steve Young became an integral part of the movement which defined the California country-rock sound. Appearing on Steve's 1969 classic album, Rock, Salt & Nails were fellow pioneers like Gene Clark, Chris Hillman, Bernie Leadon and Gram Parsons.
Through 12 albums and countless live performances, Steve Young's music has remained fresh and aggressive, with a sense of deepening spirituality, and a consistent intellectual and artistic challenge, to himself and to his audience. Many of the stars of the music industry have recorded Steve Young songs, and in some cases forged a career image around them. "Lonesome, Orn'ry & Mean," for example, became the signature tune for 'Outlaw' Waylon Jennings. Hank Williams Jr.'s cover of "Montgomery In The Rain" remains a classic.
Certainly the most-covered Steve Young song of all is "Seven Bridges Road," which has been recorded at various times by artists like Joan Baez, Rita Coolidge, Iain Matthews, the Eagles, Ricochet, and, most recently, Dolly Parton. While Steve Young songs have brought commercial success to others, Young has never been close enough to the mainstream to sustain his occasional brushes with stardom . He has been unwilling to accept the loss of artistic control that the industry expects of its stars. And while Steve has lived in country music towns like Nashville and Austin, and his songs have had a strong impact on the direction of country music, he rejects the country label for himself.
Young is in many ways a cultural dynamic in himself. Part Cherokee (from his father) by birth, steeped in Baptist fundamentalism as a child, yet attracted to a Zen spirituality, the young man from the South with a nomadic spirit went on to create a unique form of American roots music with a truly global perspective.Steve Young has literally toured the world. He has performed in many countries of Europe, in Australia and New Zealand, in Micronesia, China and Mongolia, in Egypt and East Africa and beyond. Wherever he has gone, he has filled the dual role of ambassador for American music and student of the cultures of others.Young's live performances express the depth and power of his vision.
He draws on his own songs, on Southern folk songs from varied traditions, on collaborations and on the best of contemporary songwriters such as J.D. Loudermilk, David Olney and others. Steve continues to tour extensively in the U.S., Canada and Europe, as well as more distant portions of the globe. As a writer, recording artist and a live performer, he is an artist at the very peak of his powers - quite simply , not to be missed.

Steve Passed on in 2016. I remember him from the late 1980s when I opened two shows for him in the N.W. US. (Still a big deal to me in 2024). I met him in Nashville in the mid 1980s when he did "Longtime Ryder." My ex Girlfriend Jackie helped us out on the shows and took my picture with my old camera as I did of Steve when not performing. It's on "Solo/Live" 1991, Watermellon Records. Thanks and enjoy any Steve Young you can find?

I entered rehab for drug addiction in 2008. I live in Middle Tennessee, so I drove to Nashville late on my 21st birthday (messed up out of my mind) and somehow found my way to Cumberland Heights (which was a GREAT facility). I was there for 3 weeks (inpatient). While I was there, Steve came in to perform Lonesome Ornery and Mean, Seven Bridges Road, and then he sang about 3 or 4 songs that he wrote about getting clean. There was one song that made me cry like a baby. Those songs were so relatable. That's something I'll never forget. I became a real fan that day.

Rest in peace Steve lost him in early 2016 along with so many other great wants what a horrible fucking year for musician deaths David Bowie Glenn Frey in the list just went on and on all the way through December. Steve was had a fall at his house cracked his head open never recovered another one of head trauma like in 1979 when we lost a beautiful voice of Sandy Denny another one head trauma sustained in a fall. love watching heartworn highways love the opening of at the Alabama Highway song that Steve's does in the beginning just fantastic and of course everybody knows Seven Bridges Road but some great stuff we got from Steve the intensity of what he sings As what I really loved. Montgomery in the rain is another phenomenal one written from a Southerners perspective that many people are surprised to find out the history of

"I had known Steve Young's music long before I met the man himself. Three or four of the songs on my all time 'good list' had been written by the same person and I didn't even know it.
"In Nashville, we finally did meet and become friends. I've seen him play many times since, and he never fails to amaze me. His guitar playing is beautiful, and his voice speaks for itself.
"For that voice, that guitar, and those songs to come together in one person is a wonder.
"I can't say enough about Steve Young without starting to sound silly. He is a spiritual hero of mine, and I love him."
    - Townes Van Zandt, January 1991

This sentiment, penned by Utah Phillips, who never performed this (his own) song, because he said he didn't sing love songs...I now apply to the feelings I have for all those who have taken advantage of a great, diverse and once generous people--under the guise of public service--and especially those individuals in particular who now hold seats in the United States Congress...and, yes, may they feel our pain--the pain of betrayal..

I only know that Gene Clark did a little work on Steve's original solo album for A&M in 1969 which was "Rock, Salt & Nails". If there's more I can't recall.
