  • In this video the Kenmore gives a good scrubdown to a very dirty sheet that had been used as a car cover. Interesting that I was able to adjust the water level while the machine was washing. It is obvious that the spin clutch and brake will have to be replaced. Enjoy.

    I have this washer & matching electric dryer in the same almond color. I purchased them new in September 1987. Mine only has one spray rinse right at the beginning of the final spin on the “cotton & sturdy” cycle. On the “permanent press” cycle it adds one spray rinse at the start of the spin after the wash. The only repairs I’ve had to make are to replace the agitator dogs once and the fluorescent lamp starter once. I notice your bleach and fabric softener dispensers retain water. Mine do that occasionally and I have no idea why. I have pulled off the “divider” between them and cleaned out any “gunk” but they still retain water every once-in-a-while. These machines were built to last!

    I've seen this video before. Electronic control panel in 1986? Chances are, barring capacitor failure, chances are very good the board in this machine will otherwise last a lifetime. They make such junk today. Also cool how you can readjust the water level while it's washing, and it doesn't stop the agitation. Very cool party trick!

      Hell YA! Now to live somewhere that I can have 2 washers and dryers hooked up. That washer is 100% original and the dryer has only had the PCB replaced. Even the heating element is original. I will never use them as daily drivers as this is a VERY rare set being it is first year and in Almond when Sears was touting them in black. It will be fun to play with them while keeping my SQ set as DDs.
      I can't fathom how some MFR's can build electronics so poorly. There is NO REASON for the PCBs to fail like they do except shit build quality My Speed Queen set has been running 3 times when we had a power surge and they JUST KEEP WORKING. Solid State controls should be vastly SUPERIOR to electro-mechanical when properly built and programmed.

      Personally, I think there are 2 reasons electronics today fail. First is heat dissipation, they just don't provide for it. Second, and even more importantly, is the lead-free solder they use now. It just doesn't "stick" as well as the old stuff. Couple that with wave soldering, poor quality control, and made-in-China and you have a recipe for disaster.

    I've never seen one do a partial neutral drain, other than mine before here on YT. Interesting.

    The noise under the agitator cap. The Agor Dogs Are Pretty Much Wore Out. Not replacing them can damage the agitator by wearing down the little grooves from the dogs grinding them away.

    @Sharkie626 Well we got it fixed too, but, the water fill spout was in a bad position. It happened to be because when I moved the tub, the spout was wiggling and making loud noises when the tub was moving around. So we took it apart to find out what the problem was, and it came out of it's hols that hold's it on, you know, the hols in the back of the washer, it came right out, and it was moving around! I could easily move it. And also it kind of doesn't have the original spout ether.

    The triple dispensers are rare!!

  • @dualactionsurgilator
    @dualactionsurgilator  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @mobilemaid I don't do it purposely. The washer does this because the spin clutch is wore out. It is not uncommon in direct drive Whirlpools with a lot of hours on them. When this happens it allows the transmission to slip from neutral drain to spin before it should. There were some very early direct drive Whirlpool/Kenmore machines that did not have a neutral drain spin clutch. These always did a spin drain.

    @dualactionsurgilator Black panels like mines and MustangfanNC were produced in 1975 to 1980 and in 1981 it had a complete different change. Both mines and MustangfanNC 80 series BD machines have the same panel that has energy saver on both the water level and temps.

    No cheap transmission gears, perfectly good and simple fix if something goes wrong. Our 2008 Kenmore is still working great. Much better than crappy new Whirlpools/Kenmores.

  • @dualactionsurgilator
    @dualactionsurgilator  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This was the first High end Solid State control incarnation of the DD platform and it is an early 27 inch DD. The direct drive Kenmores first appeared in the early 80;s on the 24 inch machines. AFAIK the full size 27" DDs did not come out until 86.

    These machines were work horses. Used to have the 1988 model, and I miss it dearly

  • @dualactionsurgilator
    @dualactionsurgilator  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @Ilovewashers It certainly is a very old (early 80's) DD Whirlpool machine. Any DD Kenmore from this time had a straight vane agitator. If it had a tub ring it is plausible sit was made before the neutral drain pack was incorporated into the transmission. I don't belive there's alot of these left around. If you can still get it it would be worth collecting. Most early Kenmore DD's I've seen are plastic tops so this is a nicer model.

  • @themaytagrepairman
    @themaytagrepairman 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @dualactionsurgilator I had a do-it-yourself repair manual from Whirlpool. It referred to what you call the spin clutch, it called the "neutral pack". The parts are made of plastic and they are inside the gear case. If you check, I've see videos on how to replace the neutral pack in this type of machine on this site. Just trying to help. If you go to a parts store and ask for a spin clutch you'll end up with the wrong part. I've been there!LOL

    Nice vintage machine there! I wish my direct drive had spray rinses like that. I don't use my DD that much because it wasn't agitating good. I always use my BD kenmore. It's old but it does a pretty good job.

  • @dualactionsurgilator
    @dualactionsurgilator  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @JSneaker Thanks. Look on Craigslist, At least where I live you can find tons of 1990's vintage DD Whirlpool/Kenmores usually not for a ton of money either.

  • @Sharkie626
    @Sharkie626 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    hey Nick I happened to read your description just now, just to let ya know, there isn't anything wrong with your brake or spin clutch. all the spin clutch does is get the inner tub going but to allow give to the transmission when the tub has not reached the full speed yet. It does not decide whether or not it neutral drains.

  • @Ilovewashers
    @Ilovewashers 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @dualactionsurgilator I don't know what the drain cycle was, I did not take it with me. All I know is it had Kenmores infamous center-dial control panel from then, a straight vane agitator, the normal round basket instead of the d-shape and had the tub ring that looked similar to the GE Filter Flo tub ring. Plus it was sitting outside obviously meaning the machine does not work.

    • @OckGypsy

      A drain cycle is when the water is being drained out of the washer.

  • @BroccoliBeefed
    @BroccoliBeefed 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Used to have this machine. After 15 years, It stopped draining water out completely and my silly husband just replaced with a not-as-good-as Whirlpool model instead of repairing it. Best top loader we ever had. It was a workhorse-could clean clothes quickly and thoroughly like no one's business

  • @dualactionsurgilator
    @dualactionsurgilator  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @NVHSChadSheppard1 I've only seen the Electronic Kenmores do the pulsed spray rinses in both spins. This is a rare feature. It is possible if your DD Whirlpool has dual action you need new agitator dogs to repair the agitation issue. Your BD machine works well keep it that way.

    @Ilovewashers Are you refering to the Black panel controls? If so this is a very old DD Whirlpool. Does it have neutral darain? If it has Kenmore Black Panel controls and does a spin drain it may be a rare machine. My machine is the first production run of full size DD Whirlpools (made for Sears)with electronic controls. Made before production of it's belt drive counterpart ended.

  • @dualactionsurgilator
    @dualactionsurgilator  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Sharkie626 Actually I need to replace both the neutral pack and the clutch. I tried a full load and the machine has a hard time getting to full speed. This would indicate a worn clutch.

    I think I found the oldest Kenmore DD in Post Falls Idaho, in front of a thrift store a few hours ago. The reason I believe it's the oldest is because the machine was made when the DD's had the same control panel as the BD.
