  • Had to cut my hunt short. Not being able to help that girl really bothered me. Metal Detecting the South Jersey coast.

You did the right thing. At work in a confine space, one man inside & an attendant. The attendant does not attempt a rescue only calls for help. You were right, GL & HH Carl

Looks like we are all in agreement, you did the right thing. I used to swim like a fish. Those days are passed but even when I could swim that well, riptide? Get a life jacket and make sure help is on the way, then go in. You totally did the right thing, you all lived!

Not selfish bro ! .................... If you are not an absolute well trained Swimmer you can drown bro ..................... Lots of people die every year doing that so smart thinking .................... A family Mother, Father, son and dog where at the beach ........ Dog starts drowning, son goes in and starts drowning, father goes after son and starts drowning and then mother goes in ! ......... They all drowned except the dog lived ! ................ Something to think about ......... Nice hunt and good luck !

I just read the local Paper and the girls were 16 & 18. The other person who went out there was a retired lifeguard.

If that is an earloop spacer I feel sorry for the person who wore it, that thing is massive. Good that you decided to retreat, getting caught in riptides is no fun.

You did the right thing. Don't risk your own life. Knowing your own limitations is the sensible thing to do, like you said you have people relying on you.

You did the right thing, there is always a danger and people who are not good swimmers should not go far from shore and lifeguards. Few weeks back guy (21) drowned on my lake and no one could help him in time.

Not selfish at all! If you know for a fact that you aren't going to A) reach her fast enough or B) know that you're caught in rip current as well then that's 2 lives lost...AND YOU HAVE A FAMILY TO CARE FOR! I know this is a year late but just had to say that! It's not like you didn't try! At least you were there and told the couple to go get help! Along the way the other guy must've heard them as Well! I commend you for keeping your head about you and could assess that situation! I know how easy it is for people to beat themselves up but plz say u haven't because in my eyes you did the right thing and it still ended well! Saluti!

Atlantic City just had 2 kids drown in June only a few blocks from where my incident was.

Always protect yourself. You have family to worry about. That girl should have known better. Thank God for Police and Lifeguards. That's their job and are prepared for such emergencies.
