A lot of East Coast U.S. tribes were, as Europeans wrote, "hollowed out" & the "problem" people were shipped TO Nicaragua, where the ship captain would change their papers from East Coast tribal to African. If you don't read the source material, you'd never know it happened.

I was thinking this video was too long, and before I know it it was over. That's how good this video is. As a Jamaican, I notice that Black people in Nicaragua speaking English is much like Jamaicans speaking. Sooooo interesting and so informative. Mi love how yu spotlight Black people in Central and South America. A lot of people don't realize that there are lots of people of African decent in these parts of the world. Black people are kind of hidden in those countries. I always feel connected to the people you feature in those towns and neighborhoods.

I live in a small city called Nandaime, on the Pacific side of Nicaragua. Left the USA in 2014 at the age of 50 and made Nicaragua my new home. My mother was born and raised in Nicaragua, went to the USA in 1958.
A few miles outside of Nandaime is an old slave plantation. The original house is still standing. The foundations of the homes of the slaves are still there. The plantation is currently owned by a German family. They raise "Teca" trees, which are used typically to make pillars and electric poles because they grow so straight.
I've flown into Bluefields en route to Big Corn Island.
Absolutely love Nicaragua and have no desire to ever leave.

We Jamaicans are all over Central America. After the completion of the Panama canal; the sugar factories in Cuba; the Banana harvesting in the city of Limon in Costa Rica the British has always recruited our people to work in these countries in fact Bluefields in Nicaragua should be twinned with Bluefields Westmoreland in Jamaica as named by the British. Alot of these people are Jamaican ancestors. Culturally we are the same because of similar traditions. However, they are bi lingual other than that those are our people. God Bless them.

Here's the thing about the Miskito coast. They were their own separate Kingdom totally independent of Nicaragua until the early 1900s. They were an English speaking British protectorate.
The reason they sound similar to Jamaicans is because the British ruled Miskito Coast via Jamaica. In fact the last 3 Miskito kings if I'm correct died in Jamaica. These people speak Creole/patwa as their first language at home then learn Spanish when they get to primary school. Also check out the maypole festival/their carnival they have there.

EDIT: Honduras has the largest with with about 2.9 million and Nicaragua is second with about 1.5 million people of African descent.

There some Jamaicans right there, always know there must be a two way street.
Back home we always have some Nicaraguans who get lost and ended on our shores.

Beautiful city to visit - visited in 2004 and 2006 - best time I had - felt like I was still in Los Angeles. People were nice. Also visited Puerto Cabezas at the time.

The Nicaraguan Caribbean Coast (Costa Caribe) is the area where the English Language is spoken. These particular people speak an English based on a 17th to 19th century Old English, plus(➕) they speak the Nicaraguan Spanish Language and the Miskito Language (Garífuna Language).
    Sincerely,
    Maurice Dávila Wills.

......and still, they keep the English Accent from the British Isles, a common pattern in the English spoken in the Caribbean Islands and Continental Territories, something which is reminiscent of the time of the Pirates Of The Caribbean.

This was nice. My parents are from the Coast. They grew up in Bluefields. They spoke the English Creole, my mother knew Miskitu. Glad that you're featuring this part of Nicaragua. Not many people know it.
