  • Soldering is the process of bonding separate metal objects together with a low-melting-point alloy. When done properly, this creates a secure electrical connection. It’s not as hard as it may seem, and Becky Stern will show you everything you need to know. The main idea is to heat up both things being soldered and allow the solder to flow between them. When heated properly, the solder will wick to the surfaces, and the solder will look shiny and form concave shapes between components.

Fantastic, I wish someone had taught me this 30 years ago when I first was learning. I figured it out through trial an error.

I learned how to solder back in the mid 90s. It didn't seem very difficult. I think I could still do it.

We learned three methods for joining two wire ends together. One method was basically braiding the ends. Another was simply bending both at right angles and joining them. I forget the other.

Sorry about that! I recommend 650F for lead-based solder, a little hotter for lead-free. Read more in the article linked in the description!

Continuity testing is not a good way to test for a cold solder joint.

Look for “NASA workmanship” for text sources, and “NASA soldering” for videos. There are (third party) soldering teachers that train to NASA standards and have posted tutorial videos.

    Lots of left out info-
Ventilation and washing hands after handling solder due lead content of solder.
Soldering order by type- jumpers, sockets, resistors, caps, leds, transistors other non chip semiconductors lastly chips.
Don't solder CMOS chips with AC iron plugged in/on. You can unplug or turn off an AC iron when it is hot and have enough heat to solder a few joints. Or use a DC iron.
I like to leave one lead long on resistors and with one ohmmeter lead connected to a copper sheet (a blank PCB piece) on a block attached vertically to my bench. I hold the work so all the left on leads touch the copper and I double check my resistor placement and solder joint worthiness at the same time measuring from the under side along the trace. I have sockets I connected all the pins together that I connect to my meter and plug into soldered sockets.

Even the soldering she's doing here seems to flow too slowly for me; I almost never solder without using some additional solder flux, especially on heat-sensitive components (the faster the solder process goes, the less heat the components are exposed to). But even soldering wire together I'll use some flux, the connections are not only faster, but look much better and have a near zero chance of a cold solder joint (on medical equipment, I just won't take that chance).

You say this "The main idea is to heat both things being soldered and allow the solder to flow between them." but don't explain how...
