Shawn I can't even fathom the amount of work you put into your projects. I watch you take every step with tenacity,,,,, and then to start all over again. Your determination alone is uncanny..... There are times I shake my head in disbelief.
Hi...I live in my land in Brazil, the name of the city is Mirantão, in the state of Minas Gerais...you've been my "roll model" for " self sufficiency " in the woods...I have plenty of water with 3 springs and a mountain river running along my hall property...I plant potatoes, beans, corn, all vegetables and I raise chikens and ducks...I live by myself and have little help from a guy, 3 days a week...living my dreams fully!!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with me.
Watching your videos through the years has made me realize just how much we take having fresh water available for granted. Thank you for today's upload!
Gooseberris are the best. Haven't had them since I was a child......a long time ago! I used to get sick from eating too many every time I ate a bunch. Never listened to the gentleman who told me to be careful. Best of luck with everything!!!!! You are such an inspiration.
I always used to use the potato's I had on hand for cooking to plant . Never had any issues , I think in my Life I only bought seed potato's once ! Cheaper that way too ! Take Care . Enjoy ALL.
Hi Sean. I've been watching 3yrs now and I love the way you build work shop first and then the greenhouse next. I appreciate you're building a homestead and not just a cabin. Give Cali a big hug. She makes me miss my goldens so bad.
Shawn: Your ability to be Totally self sufficient in the bush is Really coming together! Your Cellar in your New Cabin will be very Handy for storage👍 All it takes is basic knowledge and Hard Work to achieve your goals! You make Everything look so easy BUT we know your passion to succeed far out weighs any set backs by One individual Yourself👍 I enjoy yours and your daughters Chanel : sure can see her motivation from You. Keep the videos coming!! B Deacon Manitoba Canada 🇨🇦
It's a dream garden, an Eden in the wilderness, a legacy. You're doing an outstanding job of it. Best of luck with the moose and other wildlife. What a gem!
The pressure is on for all of us to get our gardens in and established as the headlines from all media sources are warning of severe shortages, supply disruptions and even famine this year. Finally finished our garden fence along with most of the planting. Fortunately, our town was giving away compost, trees and shrubs - they set aside a one day festival like event each spring - so we got two pickup trucks worth - the max allowed.
Our city does composting too! The only reason I don't contribute or use it is because I know how many folks use round up on their lawns, then put their clippings in to the city compost bin. I keep it all off the land I have at my fingertips since that's the only way I know cancer causing chemicals aren't being put in to my own garden.
I'm loving all that chirping and that humming of the bees and bumblebee buzzing by the microphone. All the forest spirits are with you and are helping you make this work I'm sure. Bless you sir and thank you for showing us how it's done. Very inspirational! Just thank you!
☝️No need for air conditioner or heater. Just use the 50-60F temps from the soil. -Dig trench below the frost line. -Lay several lengths of 8in corrugated plastic tubing. -Cover with dirt. -Connect both ends to greenhouse. -Use one fan to circulate air. This will keep the greenhouse from freezing in the coldest winters (with help from the sun), and from burning up in the hottest summers. 👍 This will also work for your cabin. 👍
Good morning Shawn. Always a pleasure to see you and Cali🧡 hard at work. You mentioned your sister… I hope she will be willing to show us her homestead set-up sometime also! Thanks so much.
Shawn have you ever thought about cutting your potatoes in sections instead of planting the entire potato? That’s how we plant potatoes. We have tried it both ways and get the same amount, either way. So, instead of planting an entire potato, we cut into sections that have “eyes” and make one potato into multiples.
Lovin this video too, Shawn!! I have been preoccupied moving to live near another daughter in North Dakota! Your videos are a comfort to me! Thank you! And what just one man can do for our environment!!! I am totally amazed!! What excuse do the rest of us have?
You need a tiller ! And a trot line.. load up on fish . Keep the fillers for you and doggo. Bury the fertilizer for plants with tree leaves for fertilizer. Just ad water.
I absolutely love the way you explain everything you're doing and what you have to do to get to your goals. I'm finally back to making a big garden again this year with lots of veggies to can, freeze, and eat fresh!! It's taken me so long to get this point as the garden was left to the weeds for a number of years due to my own health. Now I'm doing much better and loving all this planting again!!
I'm an avid gardener way down south in Prince Edward County. I'm a convert to compost tea. I think your garden could really benefit from compost tea. It's way to innoculate your soil and compost-to-be with a complete set of microbes. Even a small amount of high-quality, fresh, hot compost can be used to innoculate a huge area with compost tea. You're in a soil-building phase and I think this could be sped up a lot by spreading around the right soil microorganisms and fungi. I really enjoy your videos - it's the perfect cure for "the internet"
Shawn, It's rewarding to watch all the fruits and nuts going in. I love planting trees and now have quite a number on my plot. The tree thing amuses my friends. This year I have five dwarf fruit trees... toning down my act! And six American Elderberry starts. These are hard come by in the UK. I have an area on my plot, which is an old greenhouse base, which is in too much shade. I'm going to make an arbour here with these bushes. The objective this year is some canning and fermenting in a small way and of course using from fresh. Usually, when I plant trees I soak them first and if they have a root ball, I open out the base and retain the soil. I find this minimises the shock. Not been on my plot for three weeks. Goodness knows what's happening there. Hopefully all the right things... nope!😀. I keep attempting the right moves and hope to pull something off. Love watching your soil development techniques and worms in the compost heap an absolute winner! Regards Stephen.
Planting trees takes a vision that looks far into the future. You plant this little thing and tend to it (or sometimes just wait) year after year with no usable return. Then one year it is mature. A couple years after that it's producing more than you can use and giving more value each year than its total lifetime cost! Most people don't have that vision. 🙄
You have a mountain to climb, transforming your large greenhouse garden area into good rich deep soil. Persistence is the key. Over time it will all happen. Great start and WoW what a challenge you set for yourself!
I’m back for another update of your beautiful garden. It’s amazing to see the changes in your plants over time. I look forward to watching your garden grow! I love watching my garden grow a little each day, that is my favorite part of gardening. It’s so fun to have the growth documented over the season to look back at and see progress. I love that about being a garden TH-camr. Let’s learn & grow more together!
I am planting trees at the cottage and I know for every certain number you plant only a few survive - comes with the territory I guess - but if you keep planting over time it is so worth it - your property will be amazing !
I've never planted potatoes by using the whole spud like you're doing, we have to worry about rotten areas causing issues at the root level down in Southern Missouri with our clay and about 7.8 PH soil. I guess the acidic soil helps fight that? We end up turning one seed potato into many planting sources by cutting around a viable eye and leaving an inch or so of flesh surrounding then leaving that on a tray or something till the cut portion dries out then plant with the eye up. I have no idea what planting in your climate and soil conditions is like so I really enjoy getting to see it done. I really love the overall thing you are trying accomplish and enjoy watching along as things progress. Yours are one of the few videos that when I see they have come up I can't wait to watch!
You have a beautiful Homestead Shawn. You have put in a lot of demanding work with much passion and love, and it truly shows. I have enjoyed watching you on this great adventure!
I have not looked in for at least a year and yes an incredible transformation! You look much the same, must be the natural outdoor lifestyle, while most of us have been stuck indoors!
SHAWN & OUR CALI so happy to see you both again got a lot of videos to watch as I was gone for awhile it is great to have my garden to work in also !!! Remember a food grade bucket can be used for growing in the winter months in the cabin I have 1 place that I grow things in the house with sunlight for all!!! I plant beans and a root veg in 1 bucket then another 1 I have a Tomatoes plant with carrots growing so it is fresh vegs all yr round for me with out the running to the store except for eggs and milk and bread for me !!!
You are a jack of all trades, i follow you every videos you made and especially the gardening project. As i watch i have plenty to learn about everything. Thank you for your determination to complete the projects with your high energy. Stay safe and be healthy always, regards to your family and Cali, ✌🙏🇵🇭 Edited because of mispelled words
I look forward to the harvest. This is quite the learning experience you are undertaking with the soil you started with. It is obvious the vast research you have done and the explanation to us of how you are making this soil. It is fun to watch and educational.
Kennebec and caribe potato varieties have been very productive for us in USDA zone 3 northern NY. We had very good crops of Yukon Gold (1990's) until the big box stores came to northern NY, transporting bedding plants from the south and bringing a virulent variety of early blight with the plants that is now endemic here (no proof, my theory). Yukon Gold is very susceptible to early blight, killing back the tops before tubers reach full size so we stopped growing this variety (we don't spray). You likely will not have the same problems we have. My favorite potato is Red Cloud. Slightly less productive as Kennebec, but resistant to early blight, is an excellent keeper (long dormancy), has high starch content making excellent baked potatoes, and is a mid-season variety maturing before the odd early frost in our area. I will be interested in learning how the yields are for the seed grown potatoes. We put out the following varieties this year: Pontiac (highly productive), Kennebec, Red Cloud, and Butte (on oblong russet with long season). good luck and let us know which variety you like the best at the dinner table.
Hi Shawn your garden getting bigger and bigger I like to see your growing potatoes everything start growing nice have a good time in the garden thank you for great video and take care.
You're making great progress gardening on the canadian shield. Stump-out brand stump remover is pure potassium nitrate (the N and K in NPK fertilizer) you could rot those stumps quick and add some zip to your garden.
You don't need much space if you use bags or pots. I have a 2 by 10 feet strip of mulch by my greenhouse and this year I just put some 16 bags with 2 taters each on top of this. If it works out I will get 8 gallon pots and make something permanent. Check out "Simplify Gardening" he has some really god videos about this.
I'm growing 3 5 gallon plastic, food safe buckets for the first time! You put 1 or 2 potatoes on a 4 inch layer of good potting mix with peat in it and compost, and some organic fertilizer. Fill it about 10 inches more, and when the plant starts showing, fill up, leaving 2 inches space. Put leaves or straw, or cut grass on top. You cut away most of the eyes, leaving a couple on each potatoe. The potatoes should be large chicken egg size. I looked at several you tube videos, and planted 2 with 2 potatoes, 1 with 1. Watering is really important, every day unless it rains, and make sure water runs out. 6 fairly large drain holes in the bottoms of the buckets 3/4 to 1 inch, and I put the buckets up on bricks to facilitate drainage. The plants are about 10 inches high now, and very green. Just FYI. :-)
Lilly you do have room for potatoes use 5 gallon buckets for growing them in!!! Pick your potatoes and grow them into the buckets I even grow inside in the winter months for myself !!! I always have another bucket for the same potatoes so I can start another batch of potatoes for myself!!!
@@lindaleal809 Hi Linda, I think 5 to 10 gallons is a better size, more room for potatoes to grow. They grow off the stem I think, not the roots. I also got food grade buckets. I had thought about it for a couple years but finally did it. Congrats to us both for trying it! :-)
Wow! I'm impressed you've grown potatoes from seed! I've never seen anyone do it that way. I always buy a few organic varieties and let them sprout, chop the sprouts and plant those. They have kept my potatoes storage full for years now.
Very exciting for ur garden singing birds going on what kind of potatoes I eat sweet potato onions mushrooms chilly peppers add spinach “and garlic easy healthy meal recipe for you. Hello thankful for sharing this proud of you and ur family blessings Cali 🐾🐾😊❤️
The goose berry and currents propagate very easy some of the others you have might too. All you do is in fall cut them back and put stick in a pot with 5 or 6 bud nodes on. 2 or 3 nodes in the soil you get about 80 90% take leave them in the pot for the next season then they are ready to go. You make 100s of plants. I put 5 in a 10 inch pot. In guess you would need to keep them in the green house over winter.
Living Traditions (Missouri USA) built double fences 6 ft apart. The wildlife don't want to get caught between the fences. (they had heard about it from old timers) Supposedly works tor them. They run chickens & ducks in the "fence moat".
This might sound like a weird suggestion, but have you ever thought about 'marking' the outside perimeters of both gardens with your own urine? It would clearly tell other animals "this is mine and I'm a human." Canadian wildlife and writer Farley Mowat did that to the wolf pack he studied. Wolves just remarked the OUTSIDE of his area as theirs. ;) I grew potatoes under straw, problem was the mice liked the straw too and did nibble on some of the potatoes.
Love gooseberry! I have one thornless verity & the others are so mean. 😲. To bad your not in the states. Only because I could give you some of my plants that need dividing. Did you plant elderberry? I look forward to seeing your garden updates as things grow. I’m planting one verity of sweet potato called Murasaki. They are so tasty! I’ll let you know if they do well. I’m about to plant them now. I’ll also be using row covers to keep the pests out. Garlic here is doing amazing. I also see a huge amount of rain coming your way & mine this evening. Have a good week
Sean I bet you are so glad you are doing all this with the way the world is becoming you're going to be so self-sufficient and not depending upon food from the world only from your sources is so wonderful I was wondering does your wife ever get to do some of the gardening planting plants??? Thanks again for all your videos they are all thoroughly enjoyed 💗
Even sand has it’s own version of the soil food web. Its just that its not the version needed for veggie and fruit and nut tree growing. So you have to build the soil you want with its own specialized soil food web of microbes, etc.
Sorry your fig trees failed, but thought that was pushing the limits when planted, but thought you were going to control the inside temps. But apparently that was a tad late, as your zone gets waaay too frosty in the winter. Hard lesson learned, enjoy your information...thanks!
Shawn, little by little your homestead is coming along so beautifully. I love to see the changes you have made so far. There is a lot of work, sweat and soreness, that's for sure. But the goals are going to be achieved. Everything is very well planned and executed. I wish you and your family the best!! A big hug to Cali! God bless you all!
It’s me again... ! 🙋🏼♀️ About potatoes 🥔... I’m not sure to understand when you talk about potatoes seeds... but... in my personal experience as an organic farmer in Italy 🇮🇹 👩🏼🌾I’ve experienced a big difference from planting potatoes from the potato 🥔 itself that you can cut it horizontally to have two different “seeds”, and the potatoes from the seeds that are more little than a normal potato 🥔 but they produce a much more harvest! I’m sorry if I can’t explain correctly... hope it’s clear. The message is that potatoes bulbs from seeds are more productive! 😎🤗🙋🏼♀️
Thanks Shawn l really enjoy learning from you because you know the land and the soil. Watching you all these years and your accomplishments on everything you engage in tells a awesome story. Thanks so much for sharing! 🌱🌱🌱🌱👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏🤩🤩🤩🤩💯💯💯💯
We have just planted our forest potatoes for the 4th year in a row. We store half of them 3 feet under ground each year and dig them up in the spring.

Lilly you do have room for potatoes use 5 gallon buckets for growing them in!!! Pick your potatoes and grow them into the buckets I even grow inside in the winter months for myself !!! I always have another bucket for the same potatoes so I can start another batch of potatoes for myself!!!
Homegrown Veg YT channel shows you how to grow potatoes in 10" plastic pots. Easy, not expensive and space-saving.
@@lindaleal809 Hi Linda, I think 5 to 10 gallons is a better size, more room for potatoes to grow. They grow off the stem I think, not the roots. I also got food grade buckets. I had thought about it for a couple years but finally did it. Congrats to us both for trying it! :-)
🌻Thanks Mr James, et al
You had me thinking about dense caloric foods to be growing, Shawn. Potatoes are going to be a big crop to grow and store.
Wow! I'm impressed you've grown potatoes from seed! I've never seen anyone do it that way. I always buy a few organic varieties and let them sprout, chop the sprouts and plant those. They have kept my potatoes storage full for years now.
What other " *starchy* " food can you grow besides potatoes?
Or do you have to stock up on, pasta, rice, flour...
That's a lots of potatoes you're planting
Gardening takes time.
The garden is looking great...doing an awesome job.
Thx for you´re answer Shawn
Living Traditions (Missouri USA) built double fences 6 ft apart. The wildlife don't want to get caught between the fences. (they had heard about it from old timers) Supposedly works tor them. They run chickens & ducks in the "fence moat".
Ohh Ree Gone? Ore eh guhn Potatoes... Oregon Potatoes. ;-) Everything else is stellar.
This might sound like a weird suggestion, but have you ever thought about 'marking' the outside perimeters of both gardens with your own urine? It would clearly tell other animals "this is mine and I'm a human." Canadian wildlife and writer Farley Mowat did that to the wolf pack he studied. Wolves just remarked the OUTSIDE of his area as theirs. ;)
I grew potatoes under straw, problem was the mice liked the straw too and did nibble on some of the potatoes.
That is such a massive undertaking few men could accomplish it. You're a remarkable man, sir.
You have a beautiful spot and setting for your garden. I send you wishes for a season of bountiful crops!
Looking good.
Never ever seen potato seeds, wow
Sean I bet you are so glad you are doing all this with the way the world is becoming you're going to be so self-sufficient and not depending upon food from the world only from your sources is so wonderful I was wondering does your wife ever get to do some of the gardening planting plants??? Thanks again for all your videos they are all thoroughly enjoyed 💗
I grow TPS ,true potato seeds, too.
BRAVO JAMES....THE DRONA picture is just ouaaaaau...BRAVO
i watch your each video even if i dont make coments-my like 110
Thanks for posting and sharing. Looks great!
Really looking very nice there at 5:36 … 😎👍✅
Love the arial view of the greenhouse and grounds. I would like to see a broader view that includes the cabin build. Thanks
Good working good job 👏👍👏👏👏
Hello when you return working at your new, home?
Having trouble finding non-grazeon straw/hay. Hopefully our potatoes do good in our new garden. Your garden is coming along so good.
I suggested the same thing you said at 5:40 to my wife and her best friend. lol j/k
Everything is coming along really nice, I hope you get a great harvest, I love the piece of land you have
Thanks Shawn l really enjoy learning from you because you know the land and the soil. Watching you all these years and your accomplishments on everything you engage in tells a awesome story. Thanks so much for sharing! 🌱🌱🌱🌱👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏🤩🤩🤩🤩💯💯💯💯
