What seeds are you starting now? I can’t wait to see how the geraniums do!💐😊
Great question Shannon. Who in zone 5 has tried the milk jug outdoor winter sowing ? Would you recommend for zone 5?
JUST getting my Johnny's order in. Better late than never!
Agree😊you have time still! 💐
I've been trying to comment on your shorts but for some reason I can't. Anyway, glad you did this video! I tried growing geraniums from seed last year and had great success! They are gorgeous and I even saved them in my fridge for this year. My snapdragons are still growing from last year's plantings. Just started my sweet peas indoors and sowed so many flower seeds the winter sowing method. I highly recommend the much overlooked Geum flower which is dainty and airy looking in the garden.
Michelle, how do you start the carnation seeds? I have tried indoors and winter sowing with no luck.
Just started Pink Sundae Salvia and boy did it germinate fast!
Hi Jamie- that is strange not sure why you cannot comment on shorts. That is great news about the geraniums and snaps. Thanks for the Geum recommendation. As far as carnation seeds, these can be started now (recommended) or direct sow in the spring. The are similar to snaps don't "plant" them in the mix, instead press the seeds into the soil. They prefer growing temps of 50-55 degrees and don't like warm temps over 65 degrees. If indoors doesn't work, try direct sow or you can purchase starts from your garden center this spring! Where there is a will there is a way!! 😉💐 Have a great weekend!
Me either! I can type in the comment but cannot 'send'. The button does not show up. Strange for sure, haha.
I will keep trying to grow the carnations as they are one of my favorite flowers just for their scent alone. Love your Columbines, Michelle. I grew some from seed last year so looking forward to seeing them bloom this year. Do you have any tips on how to structure your planting beds ( design ) and then how you determine what plants to put where? Thanks, Michelle!@@Michelleshomeandgarden
@@JamieSantos sounds like a great video topic!
Great informative video! I'm gardening in zone 5 and thanks for sharing!
Thanks Linda💐 so many beautiful flowers to choose from! 🙂🌺
Have you ever tried outdoor winter seeding with any flower seeds? I live in Illinois also and have seen some you tubers doing this on n milk/water jugs.
Hi Shannon- I have not tried the milk jug winter sowing method. I have seen these videos also, but the ones I had seen were not in zone 5.
I’m in zone 5 and I am trying winter sowing this year.. I am also starting the same varieties inside under lights just in case.
@@LovelyIslandVacation-ch6wo let us know how it turns out! 😊
I'm in zone 6 and have been winter sowing for 5 years. It works. I winter sow perrenial seeds in January, I wait until March to winter sow annual seeds, and will sow veggie seeds in April. It works and can't be easier, the plants are much stronger because they are exposed to your outdoor environment. Sometimes the seeds don't germinate but I think that can happen with any method. I use regular potting soil, just fill the bottom of the milk/water jug with premoistened soil then sow some seed just lightly tapped into the soil , insert a popsicle stick or any kind of label into the soil- added label just incase writing on jug fades, tape up the jug and write the name of the seed on the jug, tape jug shut( I use duct tape) and put in a sunny place. If you don't get much rain or snow you may need to water occasionally. When it gets warm enough untape the containers so they get too hot and when warm enough (for me that would be May for perrenials and late May for annuals and veggies) plant where you like. I've winter sown lavender, milkweed, marigolds, zinnia, cosmos, correopsis, oregano, parsley, mint, thyme, tomatoes, cukes, zucchini, cantelope, yellow squash, verbena, rockcress, etc. This year I'm trying saved seed from echinacea.
@adrabruzzese7610 Thank you for the explanation and details! Wow, that is a lot of different seeds in jugs! 😊💐
How to start seeds I don't have greenhouse and live in zone 8 in ga
Hi Diane I started my seeds in the house. It’s too cold in zone 5 to have them in a greenhouse unless it is heated all winter. You don’t need much space inside to start a few ! 🙂💐
When you say pre-annual, do you mean, perennial?
Yes, perennial.. I go back and forth sometimes it is a pre-annual for short and others perennial...💚😄
