That was great, it was a very good clear demonstration that helped get a very good understanding of surface tension and how flow improver helps!

This was just what I needed. I was going to order a bottle of Golden Wetting Aid for wet-on-wet brush painting. But already had a big bottle of Vallejo Flow Improver for airbrushing Vallejo Model Air. I wondered if it was the same. A Google search found this video and all my questions were answered. Thanks!

Another great video, thanks for the in depth explanation. Been researching this more recently, didn’t know before researching that thinner reduces drying time. The airbrush thinner contains alcohol and some people advise against using it with the brush as it may remove previous layers, there is thinner medium designed for brushing. Flow improver may also help with smoother transitions.

Can I use tamiya acrylics with the flow improver and put it in my airbrush directly?

Can you use the Tamiya paint retarder with Vallejo Model Color to achieve a similar effect? I’ll be brush painting large surfaces and am looking for a smooth and clean finish.

You can to a degree. Paint retarding slows the drying time so the paint has time to level to a smooth finish. Flow Improver lowers the surface tension so the paint sits on the surface flatter and has some retarding properties. Flow improver is useful when you use a lot of water to thin your paint. I think you will have better success using Vallejo Retarder and Flow improver with Vallejo Model Color.

have you tried this technique with gloss acrylics?

All flow improver is is soapy water to reduce surface tension. Just use a few drops of dishwashing in an oz of water.

Flow Improver is wetting agent. Detergent can be used but can create suds. No such issue with Flow Improver.

Would this work with Vallejo Primers as well?
