To be fair, that hand care routine might be something that a hand model would do. I mean if your livelihood is centered around your hand(s) I can understand wanting to do everything you can to maintain your hands
My self care revolves around my three adorable cats, sitting all snuggled on my couch with a cup of hot chocolate, a couple fig bar cookies and playing a video game
I started a Paired subscription using your code, and my husband and I LOVE IT! I thought my USMC veteran would think he was too cool for this or that we’ve been married so long (27 years!) that we don’t need it… NOPE!! He’s more active with it than I am! He’s obsessed with keeping our now 12-day streak going! Love Paired, and I thank you for introducing us to it, Hannah! ❤
Self care is having time to finish your homework for your degree, get enough rest at night, get up early to workout and make your greens to take along for the day and being able to have enough energy to get through your day with a smile.. and catch a nfl game or two with a beer or two lmao
As a therapist, those first 2 are not self care, that is call being self sufficient. Self care is time to care bout yourself and block out noise and tap in to yourself. Paying bills and taking out the trash are not those things. You wouldnt tell a new parent to practice self care by paying bills and taking out the trash
@@TheBlackDorothyZbornakthe rest of us understood it but you just took it to a literal and bitter level. Do better if you work with people. Nobody wants that energy
I wish so badly I could nap. If I fall asleep during the day even if I'm exhausted I wake up feeling horrendously sick. I'm one of those cursed people who can never nap without it making me feel really really bad 😔
The "period bath" is so full, I don't think she could feasibly get in it without it overflowing, which honestly supports your theory that she never actually got in the bath.
Taking an "everything shower" the same day after a tedious routine of changing your sheets and cleaning your home - that feeling of a clean body lying down on a clean bed in a clean home is just the best kind of self-care and self-validation I need!
Im doindg this now 😍😍my house îs clean, today i cleaned my car, my daughter just had her bath and she sleeps and now i just ate a Light salad and im going to Take and all bath ❤❤❤Then sleep on my clean bed 😍😍😍😍❤this îs my self care ❤and walking on The forest, and driving whithout music during rain just me my car and rain sounds 🫠🤤🤤or taking a bath while listening The rain.. ❤❤❤
It is quite ironic how they frame it as a ,,self-care day" when, in fact, they are working all day filming content. It's a literal antithesis of having a relaxed, stress-free day revolving around "me time".
It really put it in perspective for me when she was like “it’s a commercial, that’s not their real life.” Because what used to annoy me about videos like that was the sheer excess. I would think “why do you have to have 30 of everything?” But when you realize that someone is paying them to go on a shopping spree to Home Goods, when you realize there’s an incentive for every item they show you…I mean, it’s still annoying, but it suddenly makes way more sense because that’s WORK for them.
Today I practised self-care by ordering a pizza instead of cooking so that I could spend a few more extra minutes dealing with my stress rather than add more stress in the kitchen.
Yess!! Self (and other) care for me is usually feeding myself and family healthy food but sometimes I'll see an overflowing sink with dishes that need to be cleaned before any cooking can happen, and decide that tonight it's pizza. Giving yourself a break without guilt is self care too.
One day, I was SO tired, my eyelids heavy, and everything, but I only had about 15 minutes before I had to leave the house to pick up the kids from school. I set an alarm, lied down, and took a ten-minute nap! I felt so refreshed! If self-care is about prioritizing health, then I'd say that counts because imagine if I had fallen asleep at the wheel!
i'm in school for cosmetology and the majority of those skincare products have ingredients that are NOT supposed to be used together because they can either cancel out and not work or cause irritation. i see this all the time on tik tok and it makes me realize how little people understand about ingredients.
I was thinking about this too! Not only mixing things together but the order in which skincare products are used too can cause problems. I feel so bad for these children
Hello! Are there perhaps any websites you'd reccomend so I can learn about which products cancel each other out and which don't? Because I am trying to get into skin care but the amount of products and reccomendations are kind of overwhelming me, to be honest...
Same with the strike happening and everyone buying out tp AGAIN despite tp being made in the US and no one needs to stock up. No idea about where their products come from, either!
@@jolijtkuilenberg8674Not typically skin care, but I always chuckle when I see recommendations on vinegar and baking soda combinations. It will bubble and then the residue is pretty inert.
I read an article a few years ago that self-care is basically mothering yourself. It's not always the baths and chocolates, but it's eating healthy, staying on top of your bills/budget, cleaning your space, things that some people may not associate with "luxury" but that keep you in a cared-for state. I loved that.
Exactly this. My mental health has improved a lot, and I think it's because my self care has improved a lot, in the last year or so, because my mom has passed, and now I find myself asking "if she was here, what would she want me to do" and it's never something I want to do, but I always feel notably better after doing it
I'm seeing the effects on children/teenagers almost every day with my niece who just turned 15. She has a HUGE cosmetics wishlist, I'm talking about at least 500 € for her desired perfumes alone. She is _obsessed_ with this and I don't blame her, but I blame her parents because they are not monitoring her internet access or what she's watching or at least talk about it with her. I once took the time and tried to talk to her about this and tried to "undo" some of the damage. Her parents found out and scolded me for it, saying I "don't know what I'm talking about". I'm a social worker 💀 So yeah bottom line is: this is messed up and I'm sorry for all the children out there
Agree. Im still oke when someone below 15 start using cleanser, lip balm and sunscreen because its important. But when a kid start using retinol or anti aging product? Thats not good, influenser makes these kids are scared with aging when they are not even start aging, they still a kid who still had enough collagen production on their skin
As a social worker and grief therapist, I cannot tell you how useful this video is. I'll probably share it with clients. So many people think self care has to be expensive or esthetically pleasing, and then feel horrible about themselves when their self care is saying no to things they don't wanna do, or going to the dentist. Love this!!!!
I have a chronic condition and it was really helpful to learn that the original definition of self care was medical and referred to everything you need to get/be well that is not administered by a medical professional, whether that's changing bandages, taking medication, eating well, getting outside, resting, hygiene, etc. It doesn't help so much when you're trying to talk about community care/support but it's really good for the day-in-day-out work.
Also it's good to help people see how to do self-care on the cheap. No matter what your financial or life situation is, everyone deserves self care. It should not be the exclusive preserve of the rich or influencers.
Self care can be as simple as giving yourself time to read a great book or making some "fancier" tea for you to enjoy. It really sucks that people are bombarded with so many capitalist messages throughout the day ):
We really need to stop calling them influencers and start calling them advertisers. It's more accurate. And I wonder if a less glamorous title would turn some people off of the career.
Oh mine, there is something wacky in these two influencers’s video features here. The overwhelming red bath and the complicated red hand greasy treatment. It’ll cause me great stress if I had to do those treatments! I also recommend that these two influencers pay attention to their health instead of concentrating on selling unnecessary products. Maybe taking some water pills for the puffiness and do something to enhance their health with a doctor’s advice is a far better solution to their self care! Cheers! ❤
Two weeks ago I survived hurricane Helene, and it shifted my entire world view. Having your town destroyed and having to evacuate your home brings the essential things into focus. Community and a safe place to life will keep you going. My self care is now taking the time to pursue my dreams and spending time with people. Please don’t worry about shopping and keeping up with the jonses, it can all be washed away in an instant. Go get that certification you’ve been thinking about, learn that language, submit that application, call that person you haven’t talked to in years, train for that competition you think you’re not good enough for, just give it a chance, you’ll be happier just having tried. Don’t keep putting off your life!
Thank you so much for your comment. So often, we focus on our selfish desires of today instead of considering the possibilities of the future. We think about what we want right now and we don’t consider the fact that it could all be gone tomorrow, or worse yet, we ourselves could be gone tomorrow. Your comment helped me to remember to keep everything in its proper perspective: life is not just about things, but about time and loved ones and experiences. I pray that you and your loved ones are well, and that God continues to provide as the south plans to rebuild the communities impacted. God bless, and thanks again for commenting! ❤️
Self care for me is silence. Going outside listening to the birds or even sitting in my house with no noise and doing a craft . We have noise all the time and visual stimuli . I like to just be for a time.
The amount of plastic waste, the amount of redundant crap - a million of the same cups, the amt of packaging and overconsumption. This is ridiculous. And I wish more people understood how much human suffering and exploitation is at the root of these supply chains. God.
This annoys me to no end. People buying cheap crap on the Internet and doing a 'shopping haul', without realising they're contributing to pollution, modern slavery and other toxic shit. Or they do know and simply don't care. I hate this world so much.
@@aukkran I've been watching Shawna Ripari a lot. She does a lot of videos talking you out of buying new stuff and has done her own no-buy months, but she also does some haul and restocker reactions!
I am generally pro body hair on women because I’m one of those pesky feminist Tom boys, but go boy you better believe if it’s clean sheet day I am shaving the first chance I get and then wiggling my frictionless legs around like a total dork 😂😂😂😂
I'm a woman with shaved head (makes me very confident and feminine personally!). My self-care is shaving my hair when they are too long, my legs and cozy bath after that with good book to read. 😂
i love listening to you. you are spot on, its such a privilege to have a home to go to, shower, and eat a hot dinner. thank you for normalizing the little things we all tend to take for granted.
Self care to me was committing career suicide, so I could have peace in my mind!! Much love from Charm City - where the American Dream collapsed for the New World of Science Friction and Fantasy Influence.
In Europe, almost all bathrooms have a towel warmer. It is a radiator. Self care to me is having a couch day, watching TV. Also, having a hot meal is something to be thankful for. There are people in this world who do not have this.
I live in a pretty cheap rent house right now while we save to live elsewhere/buy our own house and even this place has a heated towel rack in the bathroom, it's pretty standard in the UK now.
In the Netherlands it seems like radiators are becoming less of a thing, especially in newer buildings. Underfloor heating is the new thing. My sister and late grandmother just don't/didn't have radiators anymore. And putting a towel on the floor just doesn't feel right...
You can also do heated towels in the microwave (they have to be small enough to fit in so it’s good for a little face towel to fold and put over your eyes)
I used to think I would be that Mom who would decorate for different seasons. But, once I had a family- I realized how much clutter accumulates , and so I don't change my decor for seasons, except Christmas. Less to store in my house! Clutter is my enemy lol
Not that the creators do but I have built my seasonal decor over many years one sale item at a time. So it doesn’t have to be so expensive. If that’s a thing you like.
Low cost & no cost self-care: 1. A nice cup of tea 2. Doing some arts & crafts 3. Visit a museum 4. Visit a park and take a walk 5. Light a scented candle
@@meganheartswellYes: giving yourself time to get lost in a great story is bliss. Adding a cup of tea and a cat on a cushion make this perfect self-care.
Cheap and easy selfcare ideas: going on a walk, cooking a nourishing meal, doing some stretching, shower, having a clean home, doing some movement, ... There are a lot of options without super fancy products. I think its often the "boring" stuff and being consistent with it that makes you feel good!
Reading a book, doing a crossword puzzle, reading a newspaper, or having a good healthy debate, are also important. Keeping the mind sharp, open, and well informed, is often overlooked important self care.
yes to the boring! having "self-care sunday!!!" every week (with a realistic amount of products and spending lol) is fine, great even! but it doesn't serve you in the long-term the same way that the boring stuff does, like a realistic exercise/movement routine, and regular cleaning, and making that doctor's appointment that you're absolutely fearing. Having a bubble bath and dessert in the tub every Sunday is fun, and definitely can help maintain a positive mindset and whatnot for the week ahead, therefore helping with mental health, but it's not the same as going to therapy and actively working on yourself for example! self-care improves your quality of life, and it also challenges you too
Hannah, as a therapist, I can't tell you how happy I am to see this being addressed on such a large platform. I hear far too many people saying they "can't afford self-care", showing just how skewed the true meaning of self-care has become. True, in-depth self-care does not cost a thing. Sure, getting your nails done and a drive through Starbucks is a nice treat(I am all about both!), but that is something fun and enjoyable in the moment and has nothing to do with truly addressing self-needs; getting enough sleep and exercise, taking care of your health and mental health, spending time with loved ones who feed your soul, or choosing alone time to self-reflect. Even setting boundaries is a form of self care. Thank you for bringing this to light!
I absolutely agree with you except for one point: things like getting your nails done/doing your nails CAN be a form of self-care for certain people too! I'm autistic and have severe sensory issues of my nails aren't done for example, so it's an absolute necessity to function in everyday life. And I know there's other autistic people out there with similar issues. Of course we're quite the exception and in most cases it really is more of a nice treat and pampering yourself (which can be short-term self-care once in a while, but isn't long-term self-care usually, which is an important difference imo). Another example is that I get dysphoric atm when my hair washes out to a pastel shade, so long(ish)-term self-care for me can also include re-dying my hair. Basically, what I wanna say is that sometimes things that look like short-term pampering yourself self-care could be long-term self-care for certain people too. Self-care is a very personal thing and looks different from person to person
Yes! Self-care is about mind body and soul...go for a walk, take in the outside air. Go to the gym and workout and feel great afterwards. Have a chat with a friend, make fun plans for the future like meeting up someplace. Take a class in something fun like art at a local organization. What I see as self-care online is garbage. The products are expensive and not proven to do anything but put a big hole in your bank account. Then you stress about bills which counters everything it was said to do.
@@tezzanoia There is nothing wrong with treating yourself to nails or getting your hair done. A lot of these companies are trying to sell you a bunch of stuff that costs a lot of money and really does nothing but cost a lot of money. I am all for those fringes we do to bring a smile to our face. In moderation.
This breaks my HEARTTTT... I can't imagine growing up with so much media. It was hard enough not comparing myself just being in school or in magazines from the grocery store.
Feeding my squirrels, switching to a sustainable lifestyle, drinking more water, eating less meat, and spending time with my 16 yo daughter… that’s my self-care.
Self care to a 75 yo that I am is to forgive the past. Let go the regrets and self judgement. Think positive thoughts of the future instead of fear, worries and stress over “ What if…I should have…! I am too old for this and that…“ 😂 I no longer compare my life with others. My life is what it is! Make the best of it and LIVE! I find things to appreciate daily big and small! A butterfly dancing over my plant in the yard, a cute Ladybug crawling on my windowsill, a friend remembers my birthday, an old love song I sang to myself, new friends I meet, a solo $25. dinner treat in my favorite restaurant every 2 months, new clothes when I can afford it. 🎉 loving the self in all levels and be content!❤
Reading, gardening, long walks, and grounding yourself (walk barefoot in grass/garden) are all good options. Music too. Playing an instrument or singing.
One of the best pieces of advice I've learned: If you hate everyone, eat something. If you feel like you hate yourself, take a shower. If you feel like everyone hates you, get some sleep. Works even better for me than HALT (hungry, angry, lonely, tired) bc it helps prioritize which one I need to attack first. Sending love to you all. 💕
Something similar to that is like don’t trust your bad thoughts after 9 PM or something. Varies on your schedule but I’ve found it true that once you’re veering into “been awake to long” a lot of bad thoughts will come and it’s time to sleep.
i am tangentially friends with someone who makes commercial-y but relaxing self care videos like this and i ran into her recently and was gushing about how beautiful and relaxing her content is and she said something that im never going to forget. it was something along the lines of “im glad you love it but don’t forget its curated. i’m comparing my life to my content too”
Therapist here: I often do a self-care assessment with first-time clients. There's nothing on that worksheet about buying stuff or going to the spa or taking baths. Self-care is having annual health check ups; Self-Care is spending time with friend/family; Self-care is finally folding the laundry you tossed onto your desk chair; Self-Care is taking your 10 minute breaks at work; Self-care is self-preservation, not self-indulgence
okay so this is my first time watching your videos AND IM SOOO HAPPY YTB ALGORITHMS LED ME HERE !!! this is exactlyy the kind of content we need to see, we're sick and tired of influencers' brainwash cuz i tell ya IT WORKS ALOT and i personally almost bought A TON of products just cuz they looked "aesthetic".... thank you so muchh for this please keep it up
I recently learned that sometimes self-care isn't actually fun. Often, it is "investing" in your future health/happiness. For example, I don't enjoy cleaning or exercising. But I do enjoy having a clean apartment and a healthy body. So I do those things because that is taking care of myself.
Yes, self-care, to me, is doing the upkeep for your body and brain to make life a little easier, not just doing the easy thing. Because if you skip to the easy part, you will spend the whole time still stressed.
Me too. I remember back in 2020 when these self care videos started to bombard TH-cam with their emotional music in the background to make the viewer feel something. It was also a time for me to to start slowly removing toxic people from my life instead of buying bath bombs
Right, in some days it's fun to put on face masks or hair mask and wait 10 minutos to take it out but some days I think it's too much work and I don't wanna do it :')
I always make sure to load all the dishes into the dishwasher and clean off the kitchen counters before going to sleep. The setup of my house has the master suite off the back side of the kitchen so in the morning when I get up, the first thing I see when I leave my bedroom is the sink and counters- they're right in front of me. On days when I've been intoo much pain or not feeling well & haven't done those to my satisfaction the night before, seeing that Jessica first thing in the morning will almost certainly make sure I feel low, tired and just "over it" the whole next day.
This is so true. My 14-year-old is glued to TikTok and constantly asks for all of these things. I've had to teach her that she doesn't need all of these things and about consumerism. I've taught her to save her money and use it for something that she will remember, like a trip to Rome. Those memories will last longer than 50 bath bombs.
Tik tok is banned in my country thankfully. . But yes my 12 year son sometimes ask for ridiculous stuff that he sees on TH-cam .. Had to explain the difference between 'wants' and '!needs'.. And if it is something reasonable, I tell him that I'd get it for him during Christmas or any other festival.. 😅
@@suvashree100I'm looking forward to the United States banning this useless app but I don't think that's going to happen. Too many crooks. Unfortunately even if tiktok is banned there will be other similar apps taking its place. The solution is for parents to actually parent their kids. Teach them values , do things with them, and don't let them get on these social media crap apps. Because when you do, you have no right to bitch about the results. Sadly , most parents are too busy with their own laughable self-care and selfish pursuits to bother with their kids care.
My dog of 15.5yrs died the other day...as I grieve..my self care as been - going out for a meal with my friends, a cry, reading my book, building a puzzle, a hug from my son and having a chat with my sisters...
I am sorry to hear of your dog passing. Dogs and cats are a part of our lives more than people. They are there for us when we leave and come home and on holidays and trips to the market. Its so hard when they are gone but how wonderful you have those memories.
I'm so sorry for your loss. My cat passed away eight months ago, and I still cry regularly. Some people may not understand, but I had a better and closer relationship with my cat than I did/do with any person. Please take good care of yourself as you grieve; allow yourself to cry when you need to, and also take time to do enjoyable things that distract you from your grief when you need to.
Ours passed yesterday, Cookie was 14 years old...I feel your pain, despite how old they were and we knew it was inevitable, it still is a shock and a heartbreak. They are family.
My 10 year old and her 11 year old bff started down the Sephora skincare/makeup trend and I put a halt on it with my daughter by taking her to a free consultation with an A rated dermatologist. We sat for 30 minutes asking questions and told us the truth without selling us anything. She even had me switching up my skincare brands and reducing what I use. My daughter’s eyes were opened with that appt and she immediately told her bff what she learned.
@@myfuturelife4445it’s not that it’s wrong, it’s that I don’t want her getting the wrong information and end up destroying her skin. It’s about teaching her the proper way so she makes smart decisions
Can I just say you're a great parent for nipping it in the bud and also actively showing your daughter that she's perfect the way she is. When in doubt, recruiting a pro is a great idea as a parent. strength in numbers!
That sounds like a great dermatologist! Sadly a lot of the dermatologist I've tried to visit, seem to predominantly deal in botox and other cosmetic issues instead of skin conditions. I felt so uncomfortable last time I went, adds were plasted over the entire office for different cosmetic procedures and they didn't seem to pay much attention to the medical issues I came in for. In fact they got the diagnosis completely wrong and I had to return for correction. At least they were completely apologetic and admitted they had dropped the ball. But it could have been very serious.
I had a therapist tell me self care should be WORK and it's not about a product or an item; it's a practice. It's not complicated but it's WORK. It's more than one bubble bath but rather a regular hygiene routine; it's not one hot chocolate after a rough day but rather regular, daily breaks. Not one five minute meditation but daily practice for weeks and months. it takes time, commitment, and planning. Etc etc. That has really stuck with me. Self care is nutrition, exercise, cleansing, et. What do I do? I watch my dog watch out the window lol. She keeps me grounded and thankful!!!
YES! I just tried to make this point in another reply but you've nailed exactly what I was trying to say. Self care should challenge you, and set you up for success. I literally was just thinking, it's more than one bubble bath... maybe it's a regular hygiene routine or maybe it's devoting your Sunday evening every week to having a bubble bath with your fav show and dessert and a glass of wine! But the meaning of the bubble bath with all the bells and whistles is that it's something that inspires a positive feeling, the actual act of self care in this scenario is the consistency and routine. The bubble bath could be anything, exercise, devoting time to a new hobby, cooking nutritious food, regular doctor check ups... Self care is a mix of both the fun, aesthetic stuff, and the boring, mundane, and potentially scary stuff, but none of it means anything unless it has consistency and intention behind it. Self care = consistency!
Yes! My regular hygiene routine is taking a shower every night; I cleanse my face, shampoo, conditioner, and use body wash. When I finish showering, I using a serum and moisturizer, that’s a total of 3 products, and then I brush my teeth and lay in bed. In the morning, I use 4 skin care products, I use a cleanser, toner, vitamin c serum, and sunscreen/moisturizer. I use a mixture of Korean products and La Roche Posay. The most expensive product I use is $23.99 sunscreen/moisturizer from La Roche Posay. My cheapest skincare product is $12. Using these products are expensive to me as is, I cannot imagine myself spending more than $80 on ONE PRODUCT
I'm gonna have to disagree on your therapist's take because way too many people with mental health conditions who need self care more than anyone else, classify as people who overwork themselves, and need to take time to actually settle down.
"True self-care is not salt baths and chocolate cake, it is making the choice to build a life you don’t need to regularly escape from." This quote from a Thought Catalog article has stuck with me for 5 years. For me, self care is planning and doing a weekly grocery trip, so I'm not making stressed half-ass dinners for a whole week.
This! My family has been insanely busy for a few weeks and healthy dinners have been a hit and miss experience. I'm so excited to make a vegetable at this point it's ridiculous.
Yesss 👏🏻 paying your bills on time. Not overspending, just living within your means and enjoying the simple things rather than into debt for luxuries. Go for cute picnics. Go hiking, get some exercise, endorphins, and fresh air! Fresh air is still free (for now 😂). Nurture healthy relationships 🌱 Cut off jealous nasty people ✂️
@dogzentraining it's funny. My husband and I had a season where we didn't budget and just impulse purchased whatever sounded good (and put a dent into our savings because of it.) But now that we budget, I feel so much less guilty for buying things that are little luxuries because we talk about it ahead of time and set money aside for it. The intentionality is so important.
@@ruhhshelle yeesss exactly. We have a few luxuries, like a cashmere jumper for Christmas. But we will skip out on takeaways/deliveries so we can afford longer lasting things like quality clothing, etc.
What a great video Hannah! I will also add this: The AMOUNT of product being used at any given time is RIDICULOUS. You don't need scoops and gobs products for them to be effective. For example: these influencers use 2-3 droppers full of 1 serum, then the same amount of another serum....then a big scoop of cream, it's CRAZY and WASTEFUL. Most serums only require a few drops to be effective and really good serums are too expensive to be wasted in this manner. Using this amount of product only adds to the overconsumption of products and wasting your money. Cheers from Canada!
The only group of people I accept going for single use items are chronically ill/disabled people but I fear those are the least of that influecer's concern.
This whole thing reminds me of a video I saw, where a girl lamented that she broke up with her boyfriend because he wouldn't pay for her to have the same 'luxury lifestyle' she saw other people having on TikTok. Turns out he was saving to adopt his nephews. Now she really wants him back, but he won't speak to her. We're at the point where we're letting lies dictate how we live.
I've had so many friends tell me I need a bf to pay for my nails, hair, coffee, clothes, phone and spend a thousand on my birthday ... like... I like my partner just fine without them buying me a ton of things
My boyfriend’s brother and sister in law won’t speak to him bc he wouldn’t buy his niece gifts more often. SIL sees things on tiktok and she wants them NOW. I wish I was kidding.
My my most important self-care habit is cleaning the kitchen every night. As a mom of 3 going on 4, waking up to a clean kitchen makes a huge difference in my happiness the next day.
Also mum of three going on four. Couldn't agree more. Sometimes 'self-care' is forcing yourself to do something you don't want to do, for which your future self will be grateful.
So true! I have 4 little kids and the 90 minutes (on a good day) of the 2 toddlers napping, I work out 50 min and take a shower. That’s the only self care I can get. The rest of the time it’s caring for others.
First of all, thanks for this video. It is powerful. For me, a good self-care example is having enough time to read a book. I realized this when I was talking with a friend, and she told me "I have not read a book for years, because I do not have time". Another good example of good self-car is learning new things. It makes me feel smart, commitment to myself, and young!

I had a wonderful sunday self care today. At 10 am, I went to the gym and relaxed in my bed after. Around 12, I decided to clean up my appartement's balcony in preparation for winter. I cleaned up my flowers and fines herbs. At 5 I then cooked myself a nice dinner. And now I am enjoying a youtube video all snuggled up in my bed. Thank you for saying, that not buying/or doing stuff is Self-care too. I tried so many Self-care things over the last years. Some of them worked an I still use/do them, others did not. I am working on using things up, be more mindful about what I buy and appreciate the things I have around me. So hearing that that is Self-care too feels really nice and motivating to me ❤
I saw another bath time video by this creator (pumpkin themed!) and it was even more over the top than this one - she baked cookies after filling the bath. Lol no.
Clean sheets are one of my favourite ways to self care. I always put on clean sheets on a Friday so I can enjoy them extra on Saturday morning. I always take a shower and shave my legs before going to bed when I have clean sheets because the feeling of shaved legs and clean sheets is so luxurious. A cup of tea in the evenings while watching tv is one of my favourite forms of self care.
Oh, what an amazing video I came across. I honestly felt this urge and stress by watching those "self care" Videos that made me feel, "am I missing out on something?" I randomly started watching this video and yeah it's true. These are just new ways of marketing the products and nothing else. My self care has been my coffee times, when I grab a cup of coffee with a good book and spend some alone time. With my family when we sat together and just talk about stuff, yeah that makes me happy too. So real self care is that simple. Thank you again for such a nice video. ❤
You aren’t missing out😂 I felt jealous of other people’s extensive skin care and stuff, but it’s not even much care for their skin it’s mainly just aesthetics

They all do pretty much the same thing. 😂 All of these are hydrating and barrier supporting products. In all likelyhood she'd get the same results just by using her two CeraVe products + sunscreen. If she's very prone to dehydration maaaaybe throwing in ONE of the essences/toners might give extra benefit.
the older i get the more i think minimalist skincare works better tbh i just use face wash, moisturizer, sunscreen and sometimes retinol toner twice a week, that's it 😂
I love your point about putting a pause on your product temptations and reconsider in a few days or weeks. My grandfather, 91, used to say and still says "wait a week" or "give it 2 weeks and see if you really 'need' it" Very useful for many in the family.
I just got hit by Hurricane Milton right after being hit by Hurricane Helene and we lost so much. We still don't have power and won't for another 2 weeks. I'm so grateful my in-laws let my son and I come stay with them because they have power. I haven't been able to work for a week and I missed a week 2 weeks ago because of Hurricane Helene. My husband works out of town and it's been really hard to be apart during all this. But I'm grateful my whole family is alive and safe and we are all together. I'm grateful for a hot shower, a comfy bed and trashy TV to keep my mind off everything. I'm grateful for you and this video today, it made me giggle and smile and remember what really matters. Thank you ❤ I am blessed.
Fellow Floridian here, and I totally understand. Hang in there, girl! ❤❤ People don't understand. We finally got power back yesterday and when I tell you, I cried during that hot shower...Or to be able to use my stove to cook. It's the little things. Many in the area are still displaced from flooding or trees. We're all just enduring and doing the best we can. Praying your power is restored sooner than you think. 🙏 It's a slow crawl. Give yourself lots of grace. Let yourself cry. We'll all get through it.
Self care for me, especially in a depression down swing is brushing my teeth, brushing my hair, taking a shower, making sure I take my meds and vitamins, feeding myself. I love painting my nails at home and will do an at-home manicure when I have the time. When the depression is really bad, I absolutely make sure I brush my teeth over anything else. Dental issues are not what I want future me to deal with. I also love to read and crochet so I will pick a cozy audiobook to listen to (thanks Libby app) and crochet or do chores while I listen. Self care can also look like making sure you get socializing time. Sometimes we get caught up in just focusing on "me time" when what we really need is connecting time with other humans we enjoy being around.
I also struggle with brushing my teeth and showering. I don't enjoy these tasks, they feel like a chore and make me more tired after. I got a water flosser and Sonicare toothbrush to cut down on the effort but still be effective, and got a shower stool with a soft cushy top so I can sit down if I want to. It's really helped a lot the last few months. 🖤
My self-care options this week: - a diner with a friend - a good book - a new embroidery project with autumn vibe - a stroll in the park nearby - a great brunch with my parents - and a bath with my hubby (when we finally manage to harmonise our schedules) 🤗
the embroidery one is so real! self care is learning a real physical craft rather than chasing accomplishments in video games and apps that dont translate to anything in real life
Finally someone is talking about it, I always felt that I was the only one who felt that way.. these influencers make us feel that self care in their way is the bare minimum one must do to actually feel normal.. and most people really feel what they are doing for themselves is not enough.. I say that self care is more about how comfortable you are with it.. not about buying a 100 different products and being broke in order to care for yourself..
I served in the Peace Corps for two years and had no electricity or plumbing. I got to my village by hiking 8 hours. I am still, to this day, grateful for my dishwasher, roads, electricity, washing machine and dryer, etc. in other words, things that are taken for granted unless you didn’t have them! Self-care for me is being able to enjoy the luxuries we take for granted!
I've never been in situations nearly close to that, but every single time I've gone backpacking and camping, I come home and am instantaneously more grateful for hot water, indoor plumbing, and soft clean blankets. I also used to serve at a homeless shelter during the winter months; each time I came home, I would crawl into my own bed, with clean sheets, in my own room and thank God that I was blessed with a safe, warm house and enough to eat every day. Self care sometimes is just looking around and saying thanks for what you've got. 💛
Yesss omg, yes, I agree ! I can not and I repeat can not go to sleep with dishes in the sink because I know when I see them in the morning, I'll be so annoyed.
I’m working on this! I’m trying to be more consistent about making sure the dishes are done EVERY night because I’m so mad at myself if I don’t do that lol
The “that time of the month bath” grossed me out. I’m not sure about anyone else but I would just shower during that time of the month. The bath bombs also were nasty looking it just was gross
Today I looked after myself by colouring! I printed out bold and easy colouring pages from Pinterest ate my soup for dinner and coloured as I watched this video and I loved it!
I love coloring….the other day, I put on some John Coltrane on vinyl, sat on the floor with my dogs and colored with my pencils for probably an hour or more.
I met this lady from Africa who had a version of self care despite limited resources. It was a small part of her day to relax. She used heated up water and put her feet in it like a foot spa. It was so simple but I think it’s a great idea that self care can happen at any time place or price range.
You only need 3 sets of towels and sheets (learned from a veteran luxury hotel maid): 1 in use, 1 in the closet, 1 in the laundry. Apply as it suits you in other stuff as well, for example socks/underwear, 1 for each day of the week). You never worry of running out of clean sets, stress out to put laundry on time, things just circulate and blend with your daily schedule. Works wonders for me and makes my life simpler and easier.
I’m a chemistry student, founder and CEO of my cosmetic line. And definitely adding so many layers is not good! Sometimes all of those products react with each other and counteract the benefits of each products. Plus your skin does NOT need soo many products at once !
Plus the ones who are pushing a new product every other day. A skincare routine should be consistent. Not only because results take time, but also to be able to nail down potential reactions. Use 50 products per week, it'll take forever to figure out which one is causing a rash or breakout.
I love how you broke it down. This isn't a bashing to fill jealous needs. It's keeping a real perspective of what we are seeing and how to be realistic.
Selfcare: Allowing myself the time off to watch one of your videos at night. Going on a solo birding hike for several hours. Making and drinking Espresso Reading a book Working in my garden. All things that make me feel good.
Hi Hannah , beauty therapist of 25 years here !!! a simple skincare routine wash , moisturiser, sunscreen a more complex , wash , toner, serum, moisturiser, sunscreen thats it !!! thanx for your content i LOVE it
Let me deinfluence you. I love espresso, and in my opinion having a real coffee machine, not one that functions with capsules is a game changer. Less wasteful, less expensive if you want so and also selecting your beans can be a hobby in itself. I gave my nespresso to my parents, who prefer their moka pot.
@@maria-wt2fn100% - get a Gaggia classic pro with a mid range grinder and buy fresh, local beans. Your coffee will be so delicious that you’ll cherish it every day
It almost feels like we’ve equated treating ourselves with taking care of ourselves, when those things are VERY different. Taking care of yourself means drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, eating nourishing foods, etc., and while treating yourself has a place in self-care, it strays from the fundamental definition of it.
Love this comment, it perfect describes what self care actually is. I read somewhere that real self care are the activists that you do to care for a baby ie all the things you mention.
I’m convinced that people on social media use the phrase “self care” the same way that Tom & Donna used “treat yo’ self” on Parks & Rec. “Clothes - self care. Fragrances - self care. Massages - self care. Mimosas - self care. Fine leather goods - self care.” Except Tom & Donna did that once a year, not every Tuesday.
That's such an apt comparison too because Ben's "treat yo' self" item was the batman suit. A good reminder that our self care doesn't have to be all these expensive things like in the video but it can be just a simple cheap thing that we already have at home
I really like how you acknowledge a “nice” or seemingly relaxing video, even admitting that you like watching certain videos, while still calling out what is real, what isn’t real, and how this distorts our sense of reality
For those of us with chronic illnesses, self-care can be as simple as making sure you eat that day, or sleeping in an hour to heal the body more, or even taking a sponge bath when a shower's too taxing. For me, putting on makeup is self-care, I love it, and it makes me feel more pulled together.
Definitely! Brushing my hair as well, I couldn't take care of it after surgery and it has never really recovered, been two years, so now I like to spend the little energy I have on brushing my hair, all of this other stuff would cause my arms to swell up and hurt soooo much. We just have to pick what's important to us, because it can't be everything like in these videos.
Your actually so right for this. Everything you said is so correct and you’re not scared of being hated and I love that confidence! Everything is so good about this video. You earned a like and sub. You’re showing everyone that this is an unrealistic way of “self care”. You just want the best for us and I really appreciate that ❤❤
This has also bled into pet care, big time. Social media seems to say that if you're not buying a ton of skincare products and specialist grooming equipment for your dog (along with a designer puppuccino treat every day), you're essentially guilty of animal abuse.
Don't forget that if you're not hand-catching an Alaskan Salmon, feeding it to your pet, and then massaging their temples while they poop, you're the worst pet owner ever, and you should be ashamed of yourself. In fact, they've already called the cops on you.
I saw a lady who put Depends on her dog for her "period," made elaborate meals, used heated towels and slathered them in coconut oil. There's definitely worse things than pampering your dogs but it's just kind of sad that we've got to a point where children are neglected and dogs are spoiled.
I know actual people who spend thousands on products for their dog... that they dont ever even walk, and leave alone shut in the house all day long every day. I can guarentee the dog would have a 10000x better quality of life with none of the expensive dog stuff, and a daily walk.
@@Elizabeth-n3v2u This is actually real animal abuse. A dog needs daily exercise and walks, they need to go out and run around for a bit on a physical level. If they don't, they could get sick and depressed. A terrible way to treat your pet
This is kinda off topic, but the day we stop tapping everything we touch with clacky, noisy nails, is the day I'll actually watch stuff on the internet again. Talk about sensory nightmares, holy hell. I cannot stand that sound and it's genuinely in almost every video now if that person has to actively touch something. Drives me insane.
Drives me crazy. I will stop watching a video if I see them doing it. The ones that infuriate me the most are the tweens that put on fake nails to be part of this trend.
You make a great point. We know commercials are commercials and the most we get from them is “oh, I want that!” When we’re seeing an influencers videos, we’re looking behind the curtain. And actually, I don’t really wanna see behind the curtain…that s*** is personal. I only see behind the curtain with some of my close friends, if that? People are very open to being “open” to the entire world, into their homes which are private and sacred….but only if it’s staged perfectly? In my bathroom, I have a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, mouth wash, a hairbrush (that I never use), shampoo, a razor, 1 body wash, 1 lotion, a moisturizer, mascara, concealer, face powder, an old and expired eyeshadow palette, and the rest is first aid, tp, wet wipes…. That’s all I have. Just one of each item and bare minimum at that. Anyone else do this?
I'm an Esthetician and have been in the beauty industry for 23+ years, and have my own skincare line.... you are 100% correct, you don't need 10 steps in a skincare routine. I can't think of ANYONE that does especially a teenager. If something does irritate the skincare, you will not be able to figure it out with 10+ products. Cleanser, toner, serum, day cream, night cream, and a gentle exfoliation.... is all you need. The beauty industry is a billion dollar industry built to sell you unnecessary products that you do not need. Take your money, support a licensed professional in your area with real educated recommendations instead of a sales associate of a huge company supporting large brands that just want to sell sell sell and not actually adress your skin concerns appropriately. Support small businesses!❤
I really like how you challenge us to consider influencer’s homes as the new studio setting and these videos as our modern day commercials. What an excellent way to frame this content so that people stop falling into the comparison trap. You mentioned L’Oréal commercials and how most people can watch a mascara commercial and understand it’s not real, so it doesn’t have a negative impact on our self-worth. If we apply that same concept to highly stylized social media content like these videos, hopefully it can help reinforce the idea that these are ultimately commercials and they should have no bearing on how we view ourselves.
That is what they are. They are not influencers, they are advertisers. But even more full of lies and loop holes, because I bet there are no laws about that yet.
Okay that skincare routine was way overboard, but to answer your question about how to know what works - it’s important to only implement ONE NEW PRODUCT at a time, use it with other products that you trust and give it 2-4 weeks (unless you have an immediate negative reaction). You are absolutely right. If you’re trying all these new products at once there’s no way to know what’s working or what’s causing a problem, etc.
You just earned yourself a follow! This is exactly what I wanted to hear-that what I see online cannot be real sometimes…especially if they’re shoving a ton products in my face.

Therapist here: self-care is also paying bills on time, take out the trash, call grandma and so much more! Not only beauty related!

My cheapest self care activity is a nap. A 15 to 30 minute nap feels like a cup of espresso.

Same with the Journaling/Hobonichi communities. I stopped following them.
I miss the early days of craft TH-cam when it was people using materials they already own. Now, so many channels seem to spend so much money.

Nice. 👍
Valid! 😊

I read an article a few years ago that self-care is basically mothering yourself. It's not always the baths and chocolates, but it's eating healthy, staying on top of your bills/budget, cleaning your space, things that some people may not associate with "luxury" but that keep you in a cared-for state. I loved that.
this is exactly what makes ME happy. and on the other hand, if I have too much stuff I feel overwhelmed.
Exactly this. My mental health has improved a lot, and I think it's because my self care has improved a lot, in the last year or so, because my mom has passed, and now I find myself asking "if she was here, what would she want me to do" and it's never something I want to do, but I always feel notably better after doing it
Nurturing yourself on all levels. Yes!
I agree. Cleaning is one of my least favorite things, but HAVING the clean space is the best mental health self care imaginable.

I agree. The most I ever used, up until I was around 17 was clearasil! And then a really bad mousse foundation I got about 20 shades too dark!
I'm a social worker 💀
So yeah bottom line is: this is messed up and I'm sorry for all the children out there
Agree. Im still oke when someone below 15 start using cleanser, lip balm and sunscreen because its important. But when a kid start using retinol or anti aging product?

Also, having a hot meal is something to be thankful for. There are people in this world who do not have this.
I thought the same thing about the radiator. Hahaha. I was like; just put it over a warm radiator of you want a warm towel... Used to do this a lot
Great points!
You can also do heated towels in the microwave (they have to be small enough to fit in so it’s good for a little face towel to fold and put over your eyes)
Hannah! Please do a video on decor influencers. Buying new home decor for every season is not reasonable and very expensive.
True! I like seasonal decoration but it's always things that come from nature, fresh or dried flowers or leaves, pumpkins, etc.
Yeees! Specially with now Halloween coming around!
@@tinykitsune0387that’s different and not what the comment was referring to. you’re not buying brand new decor every single season.
Self care is me remembering my vitamins keeping my room clean and being able to fall asleep early
Low cost & no cost self-care:
1. A nice cup of tea
2. Doing some arts & crafts
3. Visit a museum
4. Visit a park and take a walk
5. Light a scented candle
Take a walk in nature/ a park. Do some deep breathing meditation. Take a nap. Have a good laugh. Set healthy boundaries ….
Go to the library and check out some new items or get a movie.
@@meganheartswellYes: giving yourself time to get lost in a great story is bliss. Adding a cup of tea and a cat on a cushion make this perfect self-care.
6. Read a book
Yeah it’s not purchasing the suggested Paired app. Side eye.
Having a bubble bath and dessert in the tub every Sunday is fun, and definitely can help maintain a positive mindset and whatnot for the week ahead, therefore helping with mental health, but it's not the same as going to therapy and actively working on yourself for example! self-care improves your quality of life, and it also challenges you too
Don't forget bubble baths!!! I'm allergic to all the scented stuff, but plain old water and soap is great! :3
(Also I love all of your ideas!)
Doing things you loved in childhood. Like jumping rope, flying a kite or coloring.
Don’t forget a long ahh nap without alarm because you’re free that day😫🖤
Hannah, as a therapist, I can't tell you how happy I am to see this being addressed on such a large platform.
Self care is also losing damn weight before worrying about nails and facials

This is the truth about social media (/internet). It's not reality.

then take back the devices that she uses to get online.....that's the best way to protect your child.
Why do parents let their impressionable 14 year olds have a smartphone and be on social media? DUMB AND STUPID.
It seriously must be so hard for teens in this age jeez.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My cat passed away eight months ago, and I still cry regularly. Some people may not understand, but I had a better and closer relationship with my cat than I did/do with any person. Self care to me is taking my medicine, as directed, and honoring my bodies needs, like sitting down if I need to
My 10 year old and her 11 year old bff started down the Sephora skincare/makeup trend and I put a halt on it with my daughter by taking her to a free consultation with an A rated dermatologist. We sat for 30 minutes asking questions and told us the truth without selling us anything. She even had me switching up my skincare brands and reducing what I use. My daughter’s eyes were opened with that appt and she immediately told her bff what she learned.
Nowadays 10 year olds are into that stuff
@@myfuturelife4445it’s not that it’s wrong, it’s that I don’t want her getting the wrong information and end up destroying her skin. It’s about teaching her the proper way so she makes smart decisions
Can I just say you're a great parent for nipping it in the bud and also actively showing your daughter that she's perfect the way she is. When in doubt, recruiting a pro is a great idea as a parent. strength in numbers!
That was such an excellent choice, im keeping that in mind myself for the children in my life!
This is very helpfull. Thank you
Beautiful genuinely
"True self-care is not salt baths and chocolate cake, it is making the choice to build a life you don’t need to regularly escape from."
This quote from a Thought Catalog article has stuck with me for 5 years.

Best quote!! Love that 😊
What a great video Hannah! Cheers from Canada!
it’s sooo embarrassing to see someone advertise something ‘single use’ like that’s a special unique feature
Yes! Being wasteful isn’t self-care, it’s just being wasteful. Why not get the exact same product in normal packaging? That’s even more convenient.
Especially in the same video as TWO towel warmers like. Bestie.
More plastic for the environment too
The only group of people I accept going for single use items are chronically ill/disabled people but I fear those are the least of that influecer's concern.

We've always been there. It used to be called, "Keeping you with the Jones'."

Good for you for being consistent and putting your kitchen to bed. Congrats on the baby!

God, this. My hair is the first thing to get ignored during a depression episode. Just putting a brush through my hair makes me feel 10x better.
Do you have any cozy audiobook recommendations?
I force myself to floss no matter how depressed I am.

I'm in Nigeria so this video is released in the evening for me. All to say, this is the perfect way to unwind after a long day. My own self care🫣
Yesss sameee😂
Yesss sameee😂
I served in the Peace Corps for two years and had no electricity or plumbing. I got to my village by hiking 8 hours. I am still, to this day, grateful for my dishwasher, roads, electricity, washing machine and dryer, etc. in other words, things that are taken for granted unless you didn’t have them! Self-care for me is being able to enjoy the luxuries we take for granted!
When something breaks like a dishwasher or washing machine, car etc… you best know that I don’t take that stuff for granted 😫
My daily self care is cleaning the kitchen before bed as a kindness to my grumpy morning self.
That's what I do too. ❤
I felt this deep in my soul 😩😩 I also make myself an ice coffee for the morning so I can just grab and go 😭
I do this on the weekends.
There’s no way I can take a bath during that time of the month. Nope!!!
My favorite self care is lighting a candle, playing my favorite albums on my speakers, and laying on the couch. Timeless classic
I love that feeling! And sometimes dancing along to the music too and pretending I'm in a music video lol 😂
We live the same lives
Today I looked after myself by colouring! I printed out bold and easy colouring pages from Pinterest ate my soup for dinner and coloured as I watched this video and I loved it!
I colour regularly, it really helps with my mental health
I love coloring….the other day, I put on some John Coltrane on vinyl, sat on the floor with my dogs and colored with my pencils for probably an hour or more.
@@ph3n1xryse love it

I need to start coloring (apparently when I draw I either get lazy, lack of motivation or compare to other artists)
0:21 not going to lie the menstrual pad bath thing I making me laugh so hard
That's real???
Yeah, those things are disgusting looking! I guess it's funny, but gross!
It is so gross!!😂😂😂 I cringed so hard! I thought they were used at first 😮😅😅😅
So gross 🤢...

I love how you broke it down. This isn't a bashing to fill jealous needs. It's keeping a real perspective of what we are seeing and how to be realistic.
Selfcare: Allowing myself the time off to watch one of your videos at night.
Going on a solo birding hike for several hours.
Making and drinking Espresso
Reading a book
Working in my garden. All things that make me feel good.
The irony of you releasing this video as I was loading up my Amazon cart with "needed" self care products. Thank you for the reality check!!
That's awesome! A good serendipity☺️
Losing weight, decluttering and becoming a product minimalist is the greatest self care I've ever given myself. Highly recommend.
eating well and protecting the mind is the ultimate form of self love ♥

Hi Hannah , beauty therapist of 25 years here !!! a simple skincare routine
wash , moisturiser, sunscreen
a more complex ,
wash , toner, serum, moisturiser, sunscreen
thats it !!! thanx for your content i LOVE it
Just came across your channel and I already loveee the topic that you have chosen!!!🗣️❤
Your excitement over your coffee machine is so adorable
Peak joy 😂
Its so true. When I graduated college I replaced my kurig with a coffee machine that grinds beans each time and i love it.
Not going to lie… I’ve been thinking about a Nespresso machine for a bit… Hannah may have influenced me…😂
Let me deinfluence you.
Yes! Self-care is exactly what it sounds like: taking care of yourself. How it got warped into an overconsumption trap is beyond me.
Thiiiiis! I became a lot more mindful of "it's just a little treat" when I realized that it only takes $30 a day to blow through $10,000 in a year.
Self care : knitting/reading outside, alone.
Self care : deep cleaning a room of my house.
Self care : doing a 20m workout session.
Yes! My type of self-care.
Yes!!
This was me over the weekend!! 🎉
Yes! I love these ❤❤
For those of us with chronic illnesses, self-care can be as simple as making sure you eat that day, or sleeping in an hour to heal the body more, or even taking a sponge bath when a shower's too taxing.
We just have to pick what's important to us, because it can't be everything like in these videos.
feel you :-)
Your actually so right for this.
It's ridiculous. My husky would eat everything. I mean all she could reach, snatch, pick up, etc...
Rest in peace my love❤ I miss her so much
5:32 Not the cupboard full of Stanleys 😂

Not the fake Louis Vuitton😂
This is kinda off topic, but the day we stop tapping everything we touch with clacky, noisy nails, is the day I'll actually watch stuff on the internet again. Talk about sensory nightmares, holy hell. I cannot stand that sound and it's genuinely in almost every video now if that person has to actively touch something. Drives me insane.
Same. Even if I wanted to watch influencers, the clickety-clack would be a deal breaker.
ASMR... Activities Starting My Rage. Are these people impersonating crickets or woodpeckers?
I hope they keep the tapping trend alive forever. Will prevent me from watching those LMAO
Drives me crazy. I will stop watching a video if I see them doing it. The ones that infuriate me the most are the tweens that put on fake nails to be part of this trend.
Oh my gosh yes. The tappy-tappy makes me want to break something.
