Thank you for posting this! It was 8 years old but wow it was much more helpfull than reading the manual. Just got my license a couple of months ago and my dad gave this radio that was used to monitor trucking ages ago. The radio was not used for at least 10(?) years so I cleaned it and work just fine. Also at first I did not expected it to outputting 75 on high, more like 30 or 40 max 😅. Really impressed so far with this radio. Future goal was for ISS repeater use though it still need separate UHF downlink.
Thanks much! I'm a recently retired radio engineer, Commercial GROL, and finally have time to enter the great world of Amateur Radio which I've found vast, interest-limitless and will keep me quite busy until the tombstone. This FT-2900R is so packed with options and features - it's amazing. I agree with the instructor's observation regarding the max-level 75w RF output - impressive for a high band / 2-meter mobile without an external RF amp. It was one of the first things I checked into a 50-ohm dummy load - yep, 75w. I am far from fluency on this FT-2900. Thank you Mr. Instructor DPF. The tutorial was excellent!
It is a solid radio! I had debated with getting one of the new FTM-3200 radios, but The FT-2900 seems to be much more rugged, and not having a fan is one less thing to worry about breaking in a SHTF scenario. Since I live in earthquake country this a concern for me. Plus the FTM-3200 only puts out 65 watts, not that there is a huge difference in distance between the two.

Nice overall video. Thanks for sharing. I have purchase two of these radios. So far I love them. There is one thing that is giving me problems and that is the Memory Bank Link Scan. I can mark the banks with the blinking skip icon but I can never get just those banks to scan. I have gone through the manual step by step and wonder why I can not get just the banks I select to scan. Perhaps you could do a short video explaining and showing how that functions?
Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. I will see what I can do with the banks.. I have never used them, but now might be a good time to figure them out.
I am a novice at best. I know very little about ham radios. I am looking at a Yaesu FT-2900R for $100. I have heard that the Yaesu is a better upper brand radio and not a cheaper China radio. Is this a good price? In your video you said that your going to make it your base radio so you must think high enough about it.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. Personally, and this is only what i personally would do, if you are not in a hurry to get a new radio check the prices for the FT-2980. It is essentially the exact same radio as the FT-2900, except that is an 80 watt radio instead of 75 watt... I know it's only 5 watts, but I have seen it on sale for as lw as $125. Right now they are on sale for $139.95 at HRO. But all in all $100 isn't too bad, but might want to see if you can find it lower on QRZ Swapmeet
Thank you for taking the time to watch. here are the directions from the manual for "Memory Skip Scanning." Hopefully, this helps. To mask a memory to be skipped (only) during scanning, use the following procedure: 1. Set the radio to the Memory Recall mode by pressing the [D/MR (MW)] key repeatedly, as necessary, until “MR” and a channel number appear on the right side of the display. 2. Rotate the DIAL knob to select the Memory Channel to be skipped during scanning. 3. Press and hold in the [MHz (SET)] key for one second, then rotate the DIAL knob to select “47 SKIP.” 4. Press the [MHz (SET)] key, then rotate the DIAL knob so as to select “SKIP.” The current Memory Channel will now be ignored during scanning. The “ONLY” selection is used for “Preferential Memory Scan,” described in the next section. 5. Press and hold [MHz (SET)] key for one second to save the new setting and exit to normal operation. A “SKIP” icon will appear when you recall the “skipped” memory channel manually. To re-institute a channel into the scanning loop, select “OFF” in step 4 above, after first recalling the currently-blocked channel (the “Skipped” channel is accessible via manual channel selection methods using the DIAL knob in the Memory mode, whether or not it is locked out of the scanning loop).
Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. You might be able to use CHIRP but you would need a specific programming cable
Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. Yes, it is. I sold my FT-2900 late last year and picked up the FT-2980.
Thanks I like this radio, Did you ever check to see if the power out put is 70W as stated. Or as anyone else tested the Output power of this Radio on all four settings? Thanks.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. I have not checked the power at each step. I am sure there is a video out there somewhere of someone doing that.
VideosByDPF Question, 2900 set at 30w. Keying Mike on national calling freq 146.520 n0 problem, BUT keying on any other freq. Radio shuts down and comes up on 146520 What's. Up. Dummy load used I don't know.
I love the way you explained and stepped though the process. So much more clear than the Manual. Once thing I had a question on, I noticed on programing in the repeater, you only put in one Freq. I'm guessing the FT-2900 automatically does the math to know the other freq? And It bases it on the default .600 MHz offset? I just got my 2900 and hope to try this on Lunch. Thank you
Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. Yes, it does automatically configure the other frequency. However, the .600 MHz can be changed if need be.
That was the one thing I could not understand when first learning to program ham radios. Finally after reading different programming guides it finally clicked that as long as you have automatic offset turned on it does it on its own.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. The radio will automatically set the direction, but if you need to change it the Menu item is 43 RPT.
I liked your video, but this radio puts out 80 watts on high and Alinco has a model that puts out 85 watts on high. The "thing" with the Alinco is it only has two power settings and the Yaesu has 4. CORRECTION: the description I entered is for the 2980R, not the 2900, my apologies.
I have a 2989R and I can't seem to program it correctly. I believe I set the repeater and pl tone codes, however no one can hear me. Above the frequency is + T SQ. How can I remove the SQ?
Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. The easiest way, in my opinion, is to reprogram that particular repeater to the exact same spot.
I must have hit a wrong button on my FT - 2980R/E I now have the "Int" on my Screen and when I key up I'm sending a Beep. How do I remove the Int. When I get into it , it gives me an option of 25 sec / 15sec Any suggestions to get rid of the Int Thank You
Lee Corfield Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment! It is much appreciated. Try quickly pressing the left hand button, the one with the letter “L” on it. That should work. If it doesn’t let me know and I’ll look elsewhere for an answer.
Thanks for the video, Ive been looking through the manual for my FT-1500M on how to Delete a memory, your interface seem fairly similar, do you know how to delete a memory
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment! If you are asking about how to delete the memory on a FT-1500 then no I don't. This is what I found in the manual on page 40, but this is for Memory Banks; 1. While operating in Memory Bank mode, recall the memory channel to be removed from a Memory Bank. 2. Press and hold [D/MR (MW)] key for one second, then press the [A/N (LOW)] key to remove the memory channel data from the Memory Bank.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. I to switched to the FT-2980. The repeater is an electronic device that receives a weak or low-level radio signal and retransmits it at a higher level or higher power, so that the signal can cover longer distances without degradation.
Yes, repeaters extend your range. Depending where the repeater is it can really allow you to reach many miles! I have one near me that I can literally be in parts of San Diego County and talk with someone in Los Angeles County. I have even talked to someone on a cruise ship that was off the coast of San Diego.
ChronicallyCremated Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. Glad this video helped you! Since making this video I have changed to the FT-2980. They are great radios!
Hi, I was wondering if I could use this tutorial to program the 2980r..I’m a old Ft-101E type of guy ..”those I understand” This one is a little intimidating. You make it look so easy! Thank you. N4EVG
Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. I tend to adjust the power once i input the frequency i wish to program.
Thanks for the simple instructions. I am in the process of getting a FT2900R You should have shown how to adjust the offsets for repeaters. Most of the local repeaters are not + 600khz Also how to delete a channel would be helpful.
Do you know how to set power level so it will stay to a channel that’s already in memory. I didn’t do it on as I programmed it. Completely forgot. I manually programmed 89 channels and do not wanna do it all over again
Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. If memory serves you would have to either rewrite a new channelof the old one or reset the whole radio.
@@WJ6FRadio yeah. I found it easier to just rewrite the channel as I need. I think they should tweak the software of the radio so you when you change the power it stays till you change it again. Great radio tho. 73’s KQ4LPW
Hello Dpf I have a question? I bought the same radio you have and I hooked it up to my truck. Everything comes on but when I put in my channel I use and squeeze the mic an Error displays on the face of the radio. What is wrong or what am I doing wrong. Just to let you know I'm very new to this. Thank you in advance.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. 1. Press and hold the [MHz(SET)] button for one second, then rotate the dial knob to to select "43 RPT." 2. Press the [MHz(SET)] key, then rotate the dial knob to select the desired shift direction (-RPT, +RPT , or SIMP). 3. Press and hold the [MHz(SET)] button for one second to save your new setting and exit to normal operation.
I looked through the manual several times, and I found out you can mask and unmask a memory channel and delete a memory bank. However, to my knowledge the only way to delete a channel is to either write a new one over it, or reset the whole radio to factory settings (Not something I would want to do). If you have found out how to delete a memory channel please share it.
@@WJ6FRadio That's what I came up with also. Just wanted to see if you had a positive reply to my comment. Too bad Yaesu didn't think of that. Thank you for you time.

Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. You don't. 27.185 is channel 19 on a CB which is 11 meters. This radio is for 2 meters. On this radio you can transmit on 144.000 MHz - 148.000 MHz, and you can listen from 136.000 MHz - 174.000 MHz.
Excellent video. I'm new to HAM ..I programmed my Yaesu FT2900R for local repeater Using Menu # 49 and 52. then tried CQ on 2 meter past several days, different times of the days and still nothing. How do I know my text is going out? I don't have another radio to test my Yaesu, so I tested (signal report ) on a local repeater..and got a CW response. Not a voice.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. You can temporarily change the power setting by pressing the A/N [LOW] button (second from the right). Hope this help you.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. 1. Press and hold MHz(SET) for one second, 2. Then rotate dial to 43 RPT, 3. Again press MHz(SET) quickly, 4. rotate knob to desired shift direction (+RPT, -RPT, SIMP), 5. Press and hold MHz(SET) for one second to save setting and exit to normal operation.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. The only way I know to "erase" a memory is to program a new channel in that same memory slot. However, if you have the programming software then it can easily be done.
@@WJ6FRadio thanks for the info. I just figured out how to do it about 2 days ago. I had to Google it and find out. It was very easy. Sad thing is I don't think I would have figured it out on my own. Lol

Not sure the reason for your statement. However, when this video was made there was no such thing as an FT-2980. When the FT-2980 came out I changed the title since there was no point in making a second video since both the FT2900 and FT-2980 are the same.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. Unfortunately you can only get rid of a saved frequency by either writing a new one over it or reseting the whole radio. Yes, this is a big design flaw.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. Are you showing a key or pad lock icon on your radio? If so, Press and hold the far left button for about one second to lock/unlock certain features of the radio. If that doesn't work you may have to reset the radio back to factory settings.
The FT-2980 radio is set up by Yaesu to Transmit on frequencies 144 - 148 MHz which is the 2 meter band for Amateur radio and a license is needed to transmit on those frequencies.

Ok thank you very much.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated.
Great video, easy to understand. Wondering how you can set this to skip a channel when in the scanning mode?
Thank you for taking the time to watch. here are the directions from the manual for "Memory Skip Scanning." Hopefully, this helps.
To mask a memory to be skipped (only) during scanning, use the following procedure:
1. Set the radio to the Memory Recall mode by pressing the [D/MR (MW)] key repeatedly, as necessary, until “MR” and a channel number appear on the right side of the display.
2. Rotate the DIAL knob to select the Memory Channel to be skipped during scanning.
3. Press and hold in the [MHz (SET)] key for one second, then rotate the DIAL knob to select “47 SKIP.”

How can I best reach you?
You showed how to set the Squelch Tone and the PL Tone but how do you set the Duplex (the + or the -)?
Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. The radio will automatically set the direction, but if you need to change it the Menu item is 43 RPT.
I liked your video, but this radio puts out 80 watts on high and Alinco has a model that puts out 85 watts on high. The "thing" with the Alinco is it only has two power settings and the Yaesu has 4. CORRECTION: the description I entered is for the 2980R, not the 2900, my apologies.

Thanks for the video, Ive been looking through the manual for my FT-1500M on how to Delete a memory, your interface seem fairly similar, do you know how to delete a memory
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment! If you are asking about how to delete the memory on a FT-1500 then no I don't. This is what I found in the manual on page 40, but this is for Memory Banks;
1. While operating in Memory Bank mode, recall the memory channel to be removed from a Memory Bank.
2. Press and hold [D/MR (MW)] key for one second, then press the [A/N (LOW)] key to remove the memory channel data from the Memory Bank.
Works!!! Thanks
What does the repeater do once it is programmed I am also new to the yeasu FM transceiver 2980
Thank you for taking the time to watch and the comment! It is greatly appreciated. I to switched to the FT-2980. The repeater is an electronic device that receives a weak or low-level radio signal and retransmits it at a higher level or higher power, so that the signal can cover longer distances without degradation.
So you get more range out of it?
Yes, repeaters extend your range. Depending where the repeater is it can really allow you to reach many miles! I have one near me that I can literally be in parts of San Diego County and talk with someone in Los Angeles County. I have even talked to someone on a cruise ship that was off the coast of San Diego.

Hi!! What about Wide /Narrow & Power levels for repeaters
I never heard anything on deleting a channel. Not overwrite, but delete a memory channel. You only did a portion of the subject.
