    One of my favourite things is to listen to your reactions when you come across something that you soooooooo believe can be great but it isn't. It makes me smile and it constantly reminds me that I am part of a channel that is truly independent, fun, skilled....and did I mention fun? I also admit I love that you helped me find the right device for me. If I had kept my reMarkable...I would have lost my temper 100 times by now. So, thank you and keep it up!! Your rants are definitely a huge benefit for your followers as we figure out our place in this world!

      I sold my Remarkable 1 that I'd originally gotten on Kickstarter - it was essentially BNIB, I'd even kept the plastic film for the screen, and got my money back. I found it an equally inconsistent experience. I will admit I was hoping the second generation would be better - I have a grandfathered account with unlimited cloud storage so it'd be nice for them to eventually sell a model that's actually good.. they are so design forward but now can't also keep up with their competition

      @@sh0 I moved to Boox because the rM1 sync was extremely buggy. But then they got funding - after you gave up on them - and fixed the sync. And when the rM2 came out I bought it and the performance, synch and other features were added. including the elegant, excellent keyboard. Since then they've sold over 1M devices. I recommend you take a second look. I too enjoy the grandfathered account. It's pretty great. It just works

      I sold my Remarkable 1 TB, and got the one with the Tandam OLED nano texture glass e-paper display. With the tumble roll marker, and the Markable 4 processor (M4), it’s looking Remarkable. Only if this was real…

    Thanks for yet another excellent video. Based on your different videos, I'm glad I didn't choose the Remarkable2 as my first e-ink tablet. I chose the NoteAir 3 (BW) despite not having tilt-sensing. But the lack of this "minor" feature is completely acceptable compared to what Remarkable is presenting at this point in time.

      @janpedersen5780 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@GaryLangEngr I can't say that I have the same experience with Onyx Boox tablets as you have. I've only had one update to the Note Air 3 BW, and it worked without a hitch, but I definitely understand your anger and resentment towards Onyx.
      However, I can tell you that I have a pretty long experience with tablets, as I bought the first iPad with cellular modem when it came out. I can tell you that Apple is also not without serious errors coming to OTA updates to iPads/iPods nor iPhones. I guess the industry has never really done a good job in making sure that updates could have a serious impact.

    • @GaryLangEngr
      @GaryLangEngr 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@janpedersen5780 Nonsense. False equivalence. I've had tablets since 1989 when I helped build one. I've had 4 iPads anjd 2 iPad minis - all were given to charity when I got new ones. No bricking, etc. They all worked fine.
      I've had 3 Onyx tablets - 2 bricked after 2 years or less by a firmware update and one (the large one) had a line across the screen that appeared after a firmware update. I don't expect Apple-level reliability from such a small company. But I wouldn't sugarcoat it or draw such an obviously false equivalence

  • @fouzr
    @fouzr หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    I can confirm, the same behaviour is present in the newer 3.12 beta

    • @NickRichards
      @NickRichards หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Interesting that the beta has the same bugs.
      I can excuse 3.11 having one feature and bug fixes.
      However it does seem egregious that 3.11 has this bug with bullet formatting, being specifically advertised as improved, being broken. And Voya had 3.11.5 so this was not just the first first crack by the software engineers.
      As a software engineer I know it takes a team to ship a quality product. I speculate the entire team is embarrassed and some are in a delusional state like everything's good or are afraid perhaps afraid that their work isn't good enough. And the ultimate issue I speculate the team isn't working well together.
      Perhaps they are all remote? Perhaps no one at remarkable wants to show off their work to their colleagues in person? Perhaps the culture is toxic in some small way?
      A bug I reported too remarkable around file naming and renaming seems to have been fixed.
      Is confused at what a finger versus what a pencil can and should do and so far as moving the insert cursor when naming files. It's unfortunate because not everyone has a pencil and they are making it difficult for those who do not by removing the ability to set your insert cursor in previous versions. I contacted support and they said this is how we want it to be. I don't trust that message was genuine however and like Voya I am feeling mistrustful of their development.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I do know some insider things about the work culture inside of Remarkable development team, and while I will not share them publicly, I can say that the first-hand accounts don't reflect what I would describe as a healthy team environment, and work will always reflect that in some way or another.
      As for a difference between pen and touch input, well the first place I'd look at would be the accuracy of their averaging calculations for the touch input interpretation. Math being off would be the most likely suspect. On the other hand, If they have separate systems for touch and pen that do not converge into just a singular input interpretation of type 1 or 2 that is being fed into a common input logic, but instead have a mess of conditions and logic for touch that is separate from conditions and logic for the pen, than that could also cause different behaviour between two different input methods.
      But the formatting issues are simply incomplete logic implementation and testing, nothing else, which is an embarrassing thing to see, honestly.

    Honestly, I love my reMarkable, and use it (and your organizer on it) every day. I'm also actually a fan of the typefolio and think typing should have been a thing you could do with it form day one, right along side the handwritten stuff. But I don't know if I'm going to be on board for the next one. you're wrong, they are laughing, because the reMarkable is a super easy to use device - many customers are looking exactly for that. I own both, RM2 and BOOX Note Air 3C, and the BOOX is a nightmare in terms of handling, I've decided to use the BOOX because of some special features I currently need (PDF annotations and local files without cloud sync). But on every single day I do miss the easy-of-use of the RM2 (just try to read an eBook incl. your annotations on your mobile device while on the road or the unified storage system of RM2, one place for PDFS, eBooks AND your notebooks - both features are not available on BOOX to just name a few)

    They have also removed features or not fixed some gesture bugs, I don't know if you've noticed. Don't know if it's for everyone or just some. I haven't been able to swipe down to exit settings, swipe left to go back in folders nor scroll smoothly with two fingers when looking at documents... It's really annoying. Maybe you could check this and include it in a video. Also a document I use almost daily has suddenly started to take seconds to open when it was never an issue before and I haven't done any significant change to it. I'm really not asking for much with rM2, but I AT LEAST don't want to go backwards. That's the worst part for me. But also this kind of thing, great video. I'd love to see your first reactions to updates in the future.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I thought that I was doing something wrong, and often my touch gestures can get unnoticed when recording in the lightbox (I'm not sure why, but whenever I record in the box, my touch gestures, on all devices are way more imprecise. Either the light or much more likely it is the unnatural angle from which I interact with the device that causes it). Either way, I was completely unable to exit with the swipe down, but I thought it was me, and not the device no longer being able to do it. I'll have to check it in a more controlled setting and maybe even on my RM 1 before updating and then after, to verify. Thanks for sharing your views.

      On what planet is a .11 release a "major" update? Who called it that?

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Remarkable did by giving it a new sub-version iteration "11" and not "10.1". If my memory serves me right, way back in the older days, they did have a 1.5, 1.5.1 and 1.5.2 (maybe more, don't remember exactly), but this is basically what the version numbers are for, to communicate to the users what type of an update it is. Bigger features and functionalities iterate the sub-version, small updates, iterate the sub-sub-version, and huge platform changes iterate the version number.

    • @GaryLangEngr

      Well, how would they know what they are missing, if they aren't even aware of what else is out there? It's the same story with Kindle users. Two of the most popular devices spend so little on software. Amazon and Remarkable. Is the hardware so constrained that creating software features is very difficult or is it just the company's priorities?

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This functionality is so simple, that I can confidently say that it has nothing to do with the platform constraints, and absolutely everything with developers simply not doing a good job. Technically speaking, it knows how to select the text, maintain the selection and move it to the proper place, and this is what they focused on when testing. However, the formatting issues are rule sets that have to be established for the software to know what to do in which situation, and this has clearly either not been done, or has been done very badly.
      These are very amateurish mistakes that are regularly seen in beginners, and I did expect them from my students while learning, but not in their final delivery. As for a paid professional to actually deliver something like this as finished work, and for a big company development department to let it be released, it's troublesome.

      I don't use the Remarkable 2 on a regular basis, but this is something that I have noticed happening occasionally. They used to have a similar problem way back in the time of RM1, and it's worth checking one thing. Turn off wifi and then try using the device and see if the same issue occurs or not. If not, then it's likely something to do with their automatic syncing with the server that causes the delay, and then you know how you can bypass it, until the issue is fixed. And of course, report the issue to them, so that they know that it is something that they need to look into.

    Well, I had very good luck with this. I ran into trouble when I used my finger to do the movement like you did. I normally used the pen by default since it is already in my hand and it is more precise than a finger touch is. When I used the pen to do the moves, it worked just fine. I was able to put it exactly where I wanted it. So the message is don't use your finger to move the selected text. Use the pen. It seems to be very "touchy" on where the screen touches are done. The pen is a very small touchpoint. Your finger is not. With small text sizes, the software may have trouble since the finger touch can cover a much larger area of the screen. That would make it much harder for the software to figure out where exactly you want the text to go. This does make some sense but maybe it is too touchy. With the pen, things are much more precise. I've seen this problem before on other devices. I guess this is why I use the pen tip for this stuff. Try just using the pen and don't use your finger.

      Thank you for your input, but this is not how such commands are implemented. The system gives a line suggestion, which means that regardless of how the selection is moved, if it is moved to the line, it needs to get there normally and without all of the bugs we've seen demonstrated here. So, the lesson is, Remarkable development team really needs to do a much better job at bug-testing their code.

    • @ralphw3
      @ralphw3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MyDeepGuide You're half right. This should work more smoothly but using your finger to move the text is not a good idea. The touch screen has had issues all along. Using the pen seems to work better. Your finger is not precise enough to do the type of text movements you are trying to do with the font size. In fact, I knew what was going to happen as you did it. I was right everytime. A lot of users make the mistake of doing that with mixed results even on other devices. With any tablet that has touch and pen interface, this problem you are having comes up. I do better than most as I have very small finger tips. But using the pen works MUCH better. I agree that things are pretty janky on the reMarkable, but using the pen works much better on them and even the Boox devices when it comes to precise text placement. It does seem that you are letting your overall thoughts about reMarkable interfere with your opinions on individual things about the interface. A reviewer can't ever do that. As an electronics engineer for near 50 years, I had to always watch out for this myself. Human nature can get in the way. reMarkable does have some major issues. They lost some of my files. I had to tell them how to fix it and how to prevent it in the future. They really don't understand how to handle data very well. They are clearly not driven by engineering. I still think you are one of the best reviewers on YT. I love your detail (I'm an engineer after all). Just be careful about keeping your overall opinions on devices separate from a single tool you are testing. You were just reviewing a new tool, not the entire device. Keep the two separate. This is necessary especially if you are doing beta testing. I still do a lot of beta testing. I have to keep each thing I test separate - even on the same device. Because of the way I do things, companies come to me for beta testing. The stuff I do I can't make videos for. I can't tell anyone what I test. So yes, I am right about this. I do understand how this beta testing works, probably more than you do.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's actually quite simple, and while I have no doubts that you have great experience in engineering, in this particular case, you're mistaken.
      It's a three fold operation:
      1. Make a string selection and copy it to the clipboard memory (this works well)
      2. Determine the new position for pasting (this also works well, as indicated by the hint bar and the cursor placement that updates based on touch input)
      3. Paste the text in (this also works correctly, but exposes the issue in logic that is implemented. The device pastes the copied content into the correct place, thus proving that the input method makes zero difference, but the formatting logic is confused)
      So it's not about input precision at all, I didn't have any issues with that. It always pasted exactly where I wanted it to. The problem is with formatting logic and a complete lack of conditional logic implementation. As such, the software doesn't know what to do, and it's actually quite logical what is happening, if you know how this type of string operations implementation is done. The pasting process is sometimes replacing the special string commands when pasting the content, and sometimes pasting the content in front of the special string formatting commands. If I am correct about this bug evaluation, then we should see the same type of behavior with other string formatting commands, such as bold, italics, underline, etc.
      It's a rudimentary issue, as amateurish as it gets, from their side.

      @@MyDeepGuide Aaahhhhh!!! Now you are making more sense.
      I wasn't wrong. I had 6 different people try it out and all used the pen for everything without me saying a word. I just had them read the on-screen "documentation" we all see and let them do it. I just watched. All had it work pretty well. No one used their fingers.
      Yes, the software has some logic issues. Quite a few actually. It does easily get confused. But I've seen Word and other word processors mess up with this if done willy-nilly.
      I think we are in more agreement than we think. We are just looking at thing from different angles.
      BTW, I also had those 6 people watch your video and they thought the same thing I did. You had pre-expectations going into making this video. You can never have that in this line of work. We always test with an empty slate (as best we can). We can't afford to mess up. We follow the makers instructions. These 6 are all professionals in this stuff. They and I actually get paid to do this stuff. Yes, we also get freebees from time to time like you do but am talking getting paid by the hour. We are expected to do highly detailed paper reports afterward. So I do know what I'm doing and how to test devices. That is why I like your reviews - lots and lots of details.
      I agree with your last point, reMarkable's tech is very amateurish. They really don't know what they are doing. Have had conversations with some of their engineers. Was not impressed. We think they are stuck with some of the decisions they made back when the company first started. They haven't figured out how to change this under the covers so things would work better but look the same to the user. Their software needs a re-design. They would have to make some pretty big changes we think. Will they ever improve? I am not holding my breath. Possibly, they could come up with a RM3 that would have a total redo and fix the mess they have. We'll just have to wait and see.
      I still think you are one of the best testers on YT. And I love your MDO!!

    • @MyDeepGuide

      I agree about the pre-expectations comment, it is 100% correct, but I don't see how I could not have them, considering that I have been following the development rollercoaster of the Remarkable platform, and that I do care about it and want to see good things happen to it 😁 So yeah, that I agree with 100%
      And I think that we also agree on the point what's mostly wrong. Yes, you are correct that the pen input is more precise than the touch input, but I don't think that this is the core issue. I think that the "smart" placement of the pasting marker is not taking formatting string commands into account and results in seemingly unpredictable behavior.
      Thank you for your engagement and honesty! 🫡

    With 4 year old hardware and software updates purely focused on typing, which I would bet 80% of reMarkable users don't care about, it feels like it is falling behind. Very disappointing updates recently. Give us full handwritten text search, give us ability to create links to a page in another notebook, give us actual cloud sync, give us a hardware refresh without the ugly chin, magnetic wake, faster performance in PDF, 300ppi screen, backlight, etc.
    Who asked for a keyboard case and now 8 months of updates focused on typing? - I thought this device was meant to be very focus and opinionated on handwriting.
    The Kindle Scribe while still a fair bit behind in software, is slowly starting to creep up. It has much faster/better hardware at less than half the price and now the ability to properly write over PDF templates. If they add a few of the omissions like ability to duplicate/re-arrange pages in PDF, ability to view your annotations on other devices, straight lines, ability to rotate selection, layers and a few other bits, the reMarkable is going to be a really tough sell.

      Tbh, no update is better than lackluster buggy update like this one is. And of course, properly bug tested...

    I'm concerned they're trying to become something they're not in an attempt to compete with other tablets. But for me, the fact that all I could do was use it as a paper notebook replacement was what made it my choice. I don't want fancy things like external keyboards, I want to be able to use the eraser button on my Lamy and I want to be able to add my own templates without needing to go into the devices programming every time there's an update. Simplicity was always what was attractive about the RM2.

    I've kept mine on 2.19 simply because 3.0 was such a pile of crap. I feel like Future creep is such a problem with these tech pros. The reason we bought a minimalist device is so that it did a single function. Well. I don't care about copy and pasting and having a keyboard and rotating and all this stuff that slows down and messes it up

    Yes, I'm a bit dissapointed, too. Your criticism is absolutely justified, but I must point out that the way you criticise does not meet your usual standards. You pick out one thing and forget that the possibility of editing the text offers other advantages. Yes, the behaviour of the bullet points is really strange, but it could easily be corrected.
    On the one hand, the written text can be precisely marked and edited. On the other hand, this also applies to converted text, i.e. without using the type folio.
    As I said, your criticism is justified. But it seems to me to be biased because of your approach. And I don't think you can seriously dispute this last point.

      I used the type folio in a meeting yesterday and I have to say that my text was very sharp and very crisp. Not a trace of bad rendering. And it still looks as good today. I have also just tried to reconstruct the strange behaviour of formatted text (bullet points etc). Maybe it's because I'm already running the latest beta version, but my text doesn't lose any formatting. None. Not even the bullet points. I ask you next time to really try out the software, discover it, before you make your judgement.

      The version I was testing was not a beta of 3.12, it was the final release of 3.11, so performance of beta 3.12 is completely irrelevant to this release. I have tested it as you've seen, and this is how it behaves. I didn't invent anything, I simply tried to use it the way I would like to use it for my needs, and this was the result. Do you think that I made some kind of a user error? If so, can you please point it out, because it might be possible.

      @@MyDeepGuide When I open up a typed document in landscape mode the text is rendered cleanly. However, when I tap on the text to bring up the cursor (i.e. when I enter typing mode), then the text is rendered poorly. Once I exit typing mode, the text is again rendered cleanly. The easiest way to see the back and forth is to toggle between modes by tapping the Pencil and then the T in the toolbar. Remarkable told me this was the expected behavior.

I disagree that it is a waste of time, as it offers a very objective and clear cut view at what the company is doing and the direction it is taking.
      How about this, I continue making the videos, and since you know and accept that Remarkable updates are so pathetic that they are not worth even covering, then you don't watch the video, and you watch the ones you like :) I get it that this might not be for you, but that doesn't mean other users are not interested, or that they find it useful.
