It's probably not good but have you tried training specialist, sell one pack like sledges, then elite recruit and level some chaff? Can have a lv3 crawler round 1 which might be funny

Tried the new saber tech today, it seems pretty good against balls, but it's probably not optimal, maybe raidens would be good against ball aggro too, but I didn't get a chance to try it

Once you get a Rank 2 Saber, low range medium units become food. Assuming you have chaff clear that is... or you become the food very quickly.
