  • This week, Link details his family spring break trip to Park City, Utah. He describes the trouble he got into with bringing his dog on the plane, living like a pampered viking for a day, and enjoying his time skiing without snowboarders hogging the slopes. Plus, Link and Rhett try to figure out the logic behind people using face filters and whether we should all stop the practice once and for all.

I'm so thankful that you guys spent the first portion of the episode talking about Link's journey with anxiety. I think it's so important for those discussions to happen and to see two grown men, engaging with interest with one another about this struggle, finding similarities, trying to understand one another and how it all works....really great. I appreciate Link for being so transparent about it.

It’s so great that we can have an open forum on talking about mental disorders. There used to be such a stigma about mental health. We were “crazy” and told to get over it. The brain is one of the biggest organs on our body. If you had kidney problems or heart problems and you needed medicine to fix it, no one would question it. Sooo when our brain is sick we take medicine to fix it. I’ve been on Zoloft for 20 years and my therapist just added Wellbutrin. I take Xanax when I need it. Not ashamed at all, I’m proud of myself that I noticed I wasn’t well and got help. Thank you Rhett and Link for talking about this, you’re helping a lot of people who are in the same situation, and hopefully they can not be ashamed and get help.

Also Link couldn't think of others and leave his fur babies at home where they belong? That's nice hes on medication and can afford regular therapy but I guess too bad for anyone trapped on a plane with him and his dogs. Like just because you can afford it why cause that stress for others? They don't know him or his animals or what they're gonna do. And not everyone can afford therapy and medication but if they're not one of the GMMore charities then screw em huh Link? Jeez

@@SC013 I think Rhett is a little more in tune to how tone deaf it can be for a successful, well-adjusted man to talk about the need for anxiety meds when plenty of people have way more stressful and anxious lives.

I think rhett doesn't fully understand anxiety disorders (which isnt bad bc no one gets it fully with gad or ocd or panic disorder ect.. unless they themselves live with it daily in their head). Being on meds make someone feel what I call what normal people feel like, they still have anxiety bc normal people do have anxiety too but they don't have the extreme that they experience more regularly. They have a more normal reaction to anxiety situations or events vs the extreme reaction they'd have without meds or homeopathic treatment. Hopefully that makes since it's 345a lol.

I don't comment very often but listening to Link talk about changing therapists and getting on meds has made me want to try to get a therapist again. I have had anxiety and depression for 17 years (probably longer but was undiagnosed at that time) and have been on many medications over the years finally ending up on Buspirone (which my boss and co-workers have nicknamed my "panic pill") and Ativan. At the time my family did not believe in mental health, therapy and only used medication as a threat to make us behave. I was never ashamed of needing the help and I was grateful for the meds to calm my anger/anxiety and get me through many dark periods of depression. My friends were the first to see the symptoms and encouraged me to seek help. It's great to see both Rhett and Link being able to discuss mental health calmly/respectfully, many conversations do not go as smoothly.

Anxiety, the brain, and the body is such a confusing web to undo when you've lived with it for so long, and the paramount portion of undoing that is labeling those feelings. Some people feel anxious for days after one day of feeling not great because your parasympathetic nervous system is still in high gear. Others always feel anxious in the morning because it's when cortisol, the stress hormone, is the highest in your body naturally. As someone who's 26, and has been like this since I was 11, I totally get it, and appreciate you guys talking about this so candidly.

The difference in face filters and something like make up or a beard or surgery, is that the image of you with a face filter exists on in a photo or digitally. Whereas, if you put on makeup, sure you look different than your base state, but if I were to look at you in person you look like what you’ve dressed up to be. You’ve made a physical change and are capable of achieving the look in real life. With the filter it’s just a completely different person that exists only in images. If you got surgery, well that’s just how you look now. If you grow a beard to cover up a small chin, so what the beard is also part of you.
And I get sometimes people just do the filters for fun, or because they are self-conscious, so I’m not judging, I’m just saying I do think there is a fundamental difference in filters and traditional appearance altering techniques.

I remember watching a video a while ago about some studies that were done showing that little girls as young as 9 felt like they couldn't leave the house without makeup on. And cosmetic and surgical procedure companies have seen a huge rise in young women coming in with filtered versions of their faces asking to be made to look like that, and it was really depressing. It's definitely affecting people and how they view themselves.

#earbiscuits Link - regarding the discussion surrounding anxiety disorders and medications, I'm still learning 10+ years after being diagnosed to afford myself grace when I get anxious. I *still* do that "why am I feeling anxious?" thing, even tho I know disorders often aren't connected to logic. Anxiety disorders mean you can get anxious for literally no reason, or there's a reason but the level of anxiety is disproportionate to the situation; *and* the lack of control over an anxiety attack is also a part of it. That lack of control, and overwhelming anxiety coming out of the blue, causes me to judge myself harshly because I'm someone who likes to know *why* things are the way they are, and if my own body is behaving nonsensically then I have no patience for it.
It's really hard to come to terms with the fact that, sometimes, there simply is no reason for your anxiety. It's hard to come to terms with the fact that you can't control your anxiety level. It's hard to accept that your body betrays you sometimes. Some days I'm better at accepting it than others.
I don't have advice really because I'm still learning, but I relate with you in feeling impatient with yourself and harshly critiquing yourself. It's very testing to try out a new medication, because of the waves of anxiety it'll cause, and the constant questioning of "is this even working?" It's not an easy journey so I just want you to know that I see you and I understand. I'm rooting for you!

Emotional support animals have to be certified through your doctor/mental health medical provider. The only reason an animal needs to be certified as an emotional support animal is for a legitimate mental health need, in order to have your animal live with you in housing that does not allow animals. Only service animals who provide specific medical/mental health task can be taken onto a plane the way Link is talking about :) Only service animals can be taken everywhere with you. And there is no such thing as certification for service animals, so any online "certification" is a scam. Service animals do not freak out at other animals, pull on the leash, and do other things like that (obviously unless they're in training). Just wanted to give this information for anyone wondering :)

It's good to hear that Link has been having a good experience with meds so quickly. For me, it took entire years to find the right ones. Most either did nothing or made things worse. The ones that did help only helped a very small amount, and for a very short time.
To put this into other terms, it is like having a pain like a headache. You go to the pharmacy for some pills. They don't work. You wait a month (this headache is constant). You get different pills. Your headache has now levelled up. You wait a month. The cycle repeats with some variation. Eventually, you manage to find some pills (from the pharmacy) that can actually help.
Well, those specific pills won't be effective forever. You'll eventually have to go searching again.

I was prescribed vyvanse for not ADHD/ADD and it was life changing. I have never been diagnosed with either but I was like “is this how normal people feel??” And it was helping my original condition. At the first of the year my insurance changed… it went from an already expensive $65/month to $300. I can’t afford it obvi😭

I think adhd meds must have some side benefits, bc I take dexamphetamine for adhd but it also helps my elevate my mood. Perhaps it is just the effect of suddenly being more capable of doing the things you need to do?
Edit: forgot to mention though, it would not be normal for a psychiatrist to start treating a patient who was anxiety with adhd meds. Standard practice is trial the most commonly effective anxiety medications before you branch out to something like that.

@@hola542 yeah. I’ve been told it’s the dopamine? I’m not sure. I know you can prescribe it for binge eating and ADD/ADHD and I hate taking meds but I feel much freer and happier in every aspect of my life that I can imagine then being used possibly for anxiety disorders too. Because mine has literally flown away over night.

I think Rhett is mostly spot on with his analysis of face filters. Yeah a lot of people know that it is obviously a filter, even the ones that just make your eyes big or skin smooth and especially the ones that add makeup.
More people have begun to advocate against them, especially on tiktok where it is rare to find a filter that doesn't change your facial structure. It's really toxic and only makes people feel worse about themselves been setting false beauty standards.
edit: And yeah it is kind of dysfunctional. It's mostly women who use filters on their photos because they feel so insecure about themselves because our society is constantly marketing them as "just not enough" Like you just need this concealer, or this eye lash extension, or this lip filler... People become so hyper aware of their appearance they no longer feel comfortable presenting their authentic face because they don't feel it is acceptable.

I haven’t watched Rhett and Link for a while ever since 2020 maybe. As a viewer, I could see some subtle opposition in their chemistry. I had to peel back, because it didn’t sit well with my soul. In listening to their podcast, I noticed some improvement. I know they both had been working on themselves individually, and I’m here for it.

They have addressed how unhappy they were with the amount they were taking on and feeling like they couldn’t be creative in the way they wanted. They made the choice to delegate and trust their creative team. They changed they shooting schedule. They also decided to just do Walmart they want vs trying to please everyone. Plus the therapy they each have started has changed things around for them. I am so glad for it.

As for face filters, I like using the silly ones. My little nephews often giggle seeing the different things and I have precious memories. When sometimes they won't sit still for a picture. As for me taking a picture of myself? I take then with filters sometimes but not makeup specifically. More adding stickers to the background, cat ears or whatever. Since if I want any pictures with makeup I just spend 10 minutes and do my makeup. So I just like goofing with the stickers and stuff. Not fool people. And all my friends who use it, they add the stickers not the makeup features. So it could be an age gap mentality? Like we are being silly not pretending this is our face. 🤷‍♀️

Emotional Support animals no longer have the right to fly. They are not service animals and do not have public access rights. They only have the ability to help you in your own home. The laws changed in 2021 because people were abusing the system with ESAs and bringing untrained animals on flights that were a danger to legitimate service animals and people.

i appreciate rhetts take on face filters actually! personally i dont use them coz theyre usually too extreme. but they can be useful if u wanna take a quick pic that looks good and u dont wanna worry abt ur appearance/lighting etc in the moment.
id love to see a discussion on facetuning and stuff. i spend hrs and hrs facetuning, mainly coz im such an anxious perfectionist abt anything i post. my perspective, tho, is im trying to make myself look how id look naturally under the perfect conditions. id imagine some others may do it for the overall 'look' and composition of the photo. realistically tho, most ppl r prob insecure and anxious coz theyre putting themselves in a vulnerable position of judgement after all
