In this lesson, I have also explained what makes Taiwanese Mandarin so special in terms of our accent, the word choice compared to Mainland Chinese accent. Examples are provided with traditional Chinese, simplified Chinese, pinyin and Bopomofo zhuyin注音.
You'd also hear these phrases constantly in the TV dramas or movies. I also use them all the time with my friends. Again, Chinese textbooks are great, your Chinese teacher might be great too, but these are the phrases are unlikely to hear in a classroom setting. I encourage you to watch lots of Taiwanese dramas or movies to get the feels of the authenticity of Taiwanese mandarin.

Love this video! I was born in Taiwan, went to Chinese school taught mostly by Taiwanese teachers and go back to Taiwan often, but I still find my Mandarin isn’t spoken the same way as a native Taiwanese speaker. Maybe it’s because I converse with my parents, who are older Boomers and don’t really use these cutesier/more casual phrases that younger generations would use. Haha. I would add that if you say 不會 in response to 謝謝 that sounds really Taiwanese! (Person 1: 謝謝! Person 2: 不會!) Even better if you learn a couple common Taiwanese/台語 phrases, a lot of people mix Taiwanese with Mandarin too. It’s my favorite part of watching Taiwanese dramas, learning new Taiwanese phrases or seeing what I can understand.

I'm from malaysia, chinese ethnic. Over here from primary one all students learn their 3 languages ie. Mandarin/Tamil, malay language and english.
When one has completed secondary school, one should have learned 3 languages unless you choose to enroll in a malay medium.national school, you only get to learn bahasa malaysia/malay and english only. I speak malaysian cantonese. I watched hk tvb, taiwan hokkien movies and china mandarin movies besides english n.malay.movies. 🙂
Other than mandarin, chinese over here speak other dialects like cantonese, hokkien, hakka, teochew n hokchew. Depending which part of malaysia one is from.

I started learning mandarin 25 years ago and now m trying to learn this language again after 25 years. I wanted to surprise my husband and family in Taiwan if one day we decided to visit again.
Hopefully, I will improve in 3 months. 🤣😆

This is cool! My wife is Taiwanese and most of the Mandarin I’ve been learning has Mainland accents and phrases and my wife says I need to learn “correct” Mandarin (Taiwan Mandarin in other words.) By the way, another phrase that is distinctly used in Taiwan is 早安 for good morning instead 早上好

I feel like I heard many of these in the mainland too. :) One Taiwanese phrase that really stuck out to me as Taiwanese is people saying "不会!" in response to thank you, whereas I never heard that in the mainland.
