Marsha Hayes and her beloved Australian Shepherd service dog Maggie, disappeared early on the morning of May 22nd while traveling northbound on US-95 in Riggins, Idaho. Marsha was making a routine coffee trip that morning to get her husband and herself coffee. She arrived at Bluetick Coffee as usual, purchased 2 drinks and that was the last time she was seen. After not arriving home her husband very quickly realized something was wrong and began to call family, friends and the authorities. Two days later, evidence of a tragic accident was discovered along the Salmon River known as, "The River of No Return." Vehicle parts and a license plate confirmed to belong to Marsha's vehicle. The conditions of the Salmon River were at the worst of the year. The Salmon River peaking due to runoff from the surrounding 7 Devil Peaks in Hells Canyon and connected waterways. The Idaho County Sheriff’s Office initially did what they could do but conditions were too deadly for them to be in the water. The local town of Riggins, where this took place, relied on the county to help in these scenarios. Without any effective movement in the search, Marsha’s family contacted me and I agreed to help. At the time of the call from Brian’s family, I was in Illinois and just finishing up recovering missing veteran William Weber’s remains. The next day, we headed straight there.
Brian and Clancy met me the morning I arrived and walked me through the case, their work, etc. I was blown away by the effort they had put into searching on their own. This video only shows a briefing of what really took place. I will elaborate more in an upcoming “update” video. After weeks of battling the fierce current up to 41K CFS, aerial searches, bank searches, and manipulating sonar to work in CFS that everyone said was impossible to do because sonar doesn’t work in that high of a CFS - we finally prevailed. On June 27, we successfully located and recovered Marsha 1.3 miles north of the Time Zone Bridge. Maggie was unfortunately not found.
This deadly recovery was made possible through the combined efforts of United Search Corps, Idaho State Senate, Torch Towing, Riggins Ambulance, Idaho Department of Transportation, Idaho County Sheriff’s Office, Idaho State Police, Shawn Davis with Little River Salmon Builders and so many more. The local community in Riggins is a true testament to why this took place and was successful. Riggins is pretty much on their own and has to rely on Idaho County to provide resources. Riggins embraced us as outsiders, welcomed me in and we did it together. After Marsha’s recovery, Riggins Ambulance has now formed, “Riggins Canyon Rescue” a 501c3 non profit. A big step in the right direction for their small community and this is a testament to District Chief Cody Killmar’s passionate leadership. Cody is going to be a key factor to the successful growth and future of Idaho’s largest county. / rigginsambulance
This video documents the challenges of working in the rugged terrain of Idaho’s notorious Salmon River and the collaborative effort it took to bring closure to Marsha’s family. We are working with Idaho legislators to create safety improvements for this particular stretch of HWY 95.

❤Doug hello handsome man. Your absolutely blessing for All the recovery you do, if I ever go missing I hope my husband Walter would hire you. Thank you Always Donna Barnes ❤❤❤❤
New Bedford Ma
Doug you’re amazing at what you do I’m so glad she was brought home. That river was fierce but you handled it well god bless
I believe when things are done from the heart, best intentions and a willing attitude. Everything goes according to plan. And prayer helps. That's what happened here. You and your team did. What law enforcement wasn't willing to do. I commend you all for that. Brain and his friend are amazing individuals. Looking for his mom. I'm sure she's looking from above. So proud of her son and friend. For never giving up. My prayers are with the family. Well done!😪✝️
Awesome Job Doug
Great job Doug & crew! ❤
Rest in Peace Marsha and Maggie ✝️❤️🙏
My only criticism is I wish there was better overhead footage of the distance from the bank out to the vehicle.
I really hope another vehicle wasn't involved and kept on driving. Seems like she veered or swerved for a reason.
I'm so sorry the pup wasn't found 😔
You can be trained to dive. You can be trained to read the river. You can be trained to use the equipment for searches. But no amount of training can train you to be a hero. You, Doug, are without shadow of a doubt a HERO. Thank you for all that you do.
@@margaretwoolley7335 Great comment 👍🏼. Nicely put.
@@mergatroydfrooch yup...hard to watch adventures with a purpose without Doug...definitely the best
@@TC-bq5ri I understand that.
I have watched Doug Bishop as he entered this line of work. There is no one better than Doug. This was the toughest search and recovery I have ever seen. Thank you Doug for your dedication, your knowledge, and for your mental strength to pull this rescue together. There is so much knowledge needed and Doug has it. I have watch many of his rescues and he puts 110 % effort in every recovery. God Bless Doug Bishop ! ❤ You are the kindest person to help people and your skills are second to none!
@@timothyrill3825 100% agree. Well said. I feel Doug and the folks he associates with are the kind I would trust with my family and my hopes.
Credit to her son who didn’t give up ❤
As a former SCUBA Instructor, I can tell you, diving in current that strong in a river that large is dangerous beyond measure. Anything going wrong could result in injury or death to the diver, given the large sharp-edge boulder substrate and rapids just below the dive site. God bless you for giving that family closure. No one but an expert level diver should EVER attempt this!
Knowing the risks due to the extreme power of the River why is the diver not secured to a life line from shore. Seems like an obvious safety measure. Excellent recovery for the family regardless.
@@wirefeed3419because that would be one more thing he'd have to worry that he gets entangled with when a river is that strong you don't want anything to entangle you so having a safety wire would just get in the way it could get caught on boulders that are down there it could get stuck on even the vehicle itself it's happened before and then they have to go rescue The rescuers and it was a real big I don't have the right words for this mess is the only word I know... You have to understand this isn't an ordinary River this is a river that has been known to kill people just with its undertow and we're talking experience divers and swimmers and the like and if somebody who has been taken by an undertow in the ocean I can tell you that I knew I would be lucky enough to get away at a certain point with that River the whole thing is a giant type of rapids or undertow that is going straight down there's it's dangerous for a reason.
@@wirefeed3419 My guess is that in water moving that quickly, if the diver were to use that kind of line, it would get pulled tight, and then like he mentioned in the video, the force of the water itself would hold him under. I would imagine it is a similar physics concept to fishing by trolling with a weighted lure behind the boat.
@@NYC-Gardener Yes, it would be a death-line.
What a HERO.
The fact that they had overwhelming evidence that she went off the road, and the local authorities refused to dive or assist in any way is infuriating.
That’s the Idaho county sheriff’s office for you. They’re as crooked and corrupt as it gets here in Idaho.
There is something special about her son. I would not be surprised to see him on here in the future assisting Doug.
You can see the glitter in his eyes, I think he has the itch to step in because he felt the injustic of not knowing all the story but having most of the pieces.😢
He would honor his mother is he did!
She raised an amazing son!
I thought that exact same thing
That was one loved woman. I can't imagine what that feels like. What wonderful boys she raised.
Doug, you defeated the River of No Return! Thank God for you giving the Hayes family closure. Deepest condolences to them.
I live in Idaho. You couldn't pay me enough to get into River of No Return!
I’m a retired fire captain from the San Francisco Bay Area. I thought we were pretty dedicated and efficient saving lives. But you guys are the true heroes going in most difficult kind of water and bringing a loved one back. May God who is our savior watch over you each time. May the Holy Spirit protect you and give you guidance as you make those body rescues.
Yes glad he is safe
The way the son caressed Doug’s head shows how much it meant to him and his family to have mom brought home and be laid to rest in a proper and respectful manner. God bless you all! 🙏🏽✌🏽🫶🏽🌻💛
I was thinking the same thing. That was truly heart felt.
Brian REALLY needed a hug, right then! Broke my heart 💔
To the family of Marsha, please accept my sincere condolences 💐 🙏🏻❤
What happened to the dog😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
This recovery effort tugged at my heart strings. I live 2 hours south, just off Hwy. 95, by the Snake River. I was born in 1951 too. I am proud of Marsha Hayes' sons, who didn't give up hope to find their Mother. I am so sorry for your loss. Doug is a hero!
I wish that her Maggie pup was able to get out. Who knows. Maybe she did and someone picked her up not knowing or realizing there was a family looking for their dog. That’s my personal wish in this tragedy. Maybe they see this and bring her home. It may be far fetched but it’s never an impossibility. RIP Marsha.
That will be what I believe from here on. 🥹
I'm over here thinking the same thing!!! So sad! 😢
I thought of that also
Did they put up posters for the dog and try to find her ???
Thinking the same thing, but how they describe the current, scares me. Maggie might have escaped but was carried far away. 😢
What an Amazing Son You Are!! What a Team of Hero’s!! As a Mother of Beloved Sons, I’m so proud of you all!!! I’m sobbing at the love and respect!!!
Not me ugly sobbing over here. I’ve rafted the Snake River many times throughout my life and I never felt it to be that dangerous until watching this. This is the humanity I wish our nation and we the people can come back to. Especially the last few years. A stranger risked his life all for the sake of bringing this family the peace they needed. The fact he even mentioned he looked for the dog had me in tears. ❤
Same. I have Kayaked the snake many times and take my dogs there nearly every day. I swim in it and I’m never worried. But ha never know.
I'm watching from 🇬🇧. I feel so much for this family and am horrified there was no search for Marsha and her beloved dog.
With all the resources the US has why not let the forces try and find her and give them good training too? I'm beyond upset for them. Sending love to all involved❤
Your animals are family too.
@@amberheathennation I felt compelled to say something to you. I live on south santiam river don't think I would be quite right without hearing and seeing that water everyday. I agree with you and I have spent a great deal of time looking for the brave and compelling around me. I have managed to find it quite a number of times and each time I did it made me stronger and cleared my vision up. You have a great day just wanted you to know you are not alone in your thoughts.
I, too, have rafted that river. It was difficult, but never felt what could be lurking beneath as bad as you all encountered. Wow. Big ups to the brevity of the rescuers.
Sir,you are a testament to a son Honoring his mother. Doug allowing this son assist in the recovery of his own mother with dignity and respect,as an Idahoan,we are greatful. Thank you.
Nobody but the grace of God. This is so heartbreaking but surely a blessing to have found her. My heart goes out to the family and the caring gentlemen whom helped with the brave rescue. 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿 for all. Deepest condolences.
What about the dog?
First time that I have ever cried watching a recovery. Doug has a beautiful heart. God bless him and his family always.
This is what being human is… they all came together selflessly to recover Marsha. My thanks , my heart goes all 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻❤️
Thank you Doug, for helping Brian and his family start the process of closure and healing. This recovery was even more dangerous than most, and yet you did not hesitate. RIP Marsha and Maggie.
Story told well also. Thank you
Did they find Maggie too?
@ No
@@donnahelmer551who was Maggie. Was she the woman's dog. What kind of dog was she.
@@kayhansen9229 yes, Maggie was their dog.
Shortly after I lost my mom (December 26, 2023), I lost my phone in the Florida Everglades with all my memories of her stored inside (no. I hadn’t backed it up). For 9 days it sat at the bottom of a canal. My dear sweet husband went back day after day with a friend with hopes of recovering it. They did! I had lost hope that it would even work. It did! It was a miracle. I couldn’t imagine leaving it behind. I can’t imagine the heartbreak this man felt with the thought of leaving his mom behind. I can’t imagine. Praise God for this man risking his life for another ❤️
I would not have left my momma either I would have begged someone to help me.
Doug, you are a true hero. Imagine your wife going on a routine coffee run and never coming home. We never know when a regular can change. Imagine knowing where your loved one was and not being able to get to her, and the authorities wouldn't help. My condolences to Brian and family. RIP Marsha and Maggie.
God bless Doug and USC, all who helped in the recovery.
Glad they were able to recover the mom’s body.. but also sad they weren’t able to find her faithful companion 🥺💔🐶

Thank you for supporting the mission and being a part of the journey.
Doug, you really are a great guy, and not just for your physical prowess...your empathy shows that there is still some hope for humanity...
When Doug said he saw her arm waving..
That was it..

A stark reminder that every day is a gift. Condolences to the Hayes family and thanks to Doug and USC for coordinating with local authorities to bring Marsha home. Doug is the real deal.
Thanks to the local authorities in working with Doug and team. It is impossible without their permission, trust, and assistance.
That statement, “….a friendship that’s going to last forever,” man, I respect this man and his family so much. Hayes Family, God bless you.
I met some amazing and honorable men watching this. God bless them and keep them safe as they are literally the hands and feet of God.
This video came across the news feed. I watched it entirely. Being a mom of 3 sons & to be blessed with 6 beautiful grandchildren, my heart sank for this family. We live in IL. My middle son is a heavy-duty wrecker operator for a company that works with ISP. Their is no amount of training that can prepare any of you for this type of recovery. You are a special type of person. Not everyone can handle a situation like this. My son has seen things that would break a regular man/woman in these fields. You are all so very special, Mr. Doug, you are a true hero with a heart of gold. Thank you for doing what you do. Our condolences to the family.
Appreciate you taking the time to watch and for the kind words - it means a lot.
God bless you and everything you do. I have nothing but love and respect for all you do to help people. All the thanks go to you, sir
Thanks!
Thank you so much Laura! 🙌🏼
Thank you Doug and crew for bringing her home and thanks to the Riggins FD for stepping up and securing the needed equipment for any further search and rescues. May you never have to use it.
From someone who has the job to recover and bring many lost souls home for grieving families to find peace, what you do is an amazing heroic thing. Bless you
I’m so thankful that she was found and brought out of the river. It means the world to her family that this could be done.
Doug, your compassion and skills are a blessing to many. Thank you for all you do as well as all of the other volunteers.
Amazing. This gentleman puts his life at risk to give this loving family 'closure'. My thoughts are with the family

Unbelievable dedication Doug, well done. Achieving the near impossible.
Agreed! It was amazing!

Doug you are absolutely amazing for doing these recovery jobs that nobody will even attempt. This story brought tears to my eyes because someone had to fall victim to a area that should have had a guardrail already in place but in order for that to be done someone had to perish, so unfair. My condolences go out to her family and what an amazing son to not give up on his mom❤ RIP Marsha & her beloved pup Maggie
The thing i like about Doug is that when he is on a mission he doesn't let "Hard or Fear" get in the way of a mission successfully accomplished. Phenomenal job gentleman. My deepest condolences to the family.
The amount of sadness and stress I had during this video was off the charts everyone of you recovery people are heroes
Doug, thank you for performing an amazing feat with many safety measures in place. It was so risky to go down into that fast-moving water, and yet you accomplished that with extreme courage! I believe that God's angels were with you every step of the way. With you and the team's efforts, the car was removed, and Marsha Hayes was returned to her family. Sadly, her dog was lost forever in the strong currents. My sincere condolences to the family of Marsha Hayes. May she rest in heavenly peace. 🙏
This was tough to watch but definitely is a good ending to a terribly sad situation. The relief and closure the family now has probably can't be put into words. You could see her son literally was trying to find the words to say when thanking Doug for not only finding her but recovering her giving them the chance to have a proper funeral and have some closure. Men like Doug and his team are real life heros.... They are real and the amazing things they do for complete strangers are real. Real life heros ❤

Excellent human service. Thank God the family got to find her. My deepest condolences to her family🙏
The fact that there was NO barrier/guardrail, is absolutely insane, ridiculous, and mind blowing!!!
That’s because they have to be able to push the snow off the road and with the mountain on the other side of the road that gives them, only one option. Don’t ever drive the 550 in Colorado in the winter. That road has no guard rails and it scares the crap out of me to drive it in the summer!
Exactly!
People need to be way more responsible when driving these roads, you should Never take your eyes off the road, not for a minute.
This was my first thought also. How tragic😪
I live very close to Riggins and our towns are all along rivers like this. And the main highways are alongside the rivers. You're not going to find many guardrails. Ppl are used to that. It is scary driving along these rivers, and it gives me some anxiety. But I live up a steep grade and no guardrails there either. Lots of cars go into rivers here. Just a reminder to do the speed limit. I like going lower than speed limit. That's why I prefer to drive at night any time I need to drive the river. I've lost a few friends to them going into the river. It's always sad. The river doesn't mess around.
Doug, I am from Canada, and I wish we had men like you up here, to call upon in dangerous situations and horrible tragedies like this! You didn't hesitate to come and help this family to get closure when no one else was willing to sacrifice themselves and take on the dangerous elements of the river!! You are what everyone calls a "True Hero!!" Thank you for your selflessness and hard work, and bravery in bringing loved ones home, dead and/or alive!! ❤ 😊
Are you really from Canada? Because we DO have units for this type of recovery. Generally though you ask the family whether you want recovery as you are asking others to risk their life for an already deceased person.
@denisegreene8441, yes, we do have units that will recover individuals. However, these units may not recover an individual if it is too dangerous if the individual is deceased. They may also be asked to pay for the recovery as well, as I have heard from an individual that this has happened to! Family members want their deceased members home so they can do a proper burial, cremation, and funeral service! They want somewhere to go to visit their loved ones graves. This is very important to them, and this man gives them the closure they need! He is willing to do to anything, including risking his life, to bring home families loved ones out of the goodness of his heart. We do not have anyone like this in Canada when the recovery teams we do have say it is too dangerous!! That was my point, and I think you over analyzed what I was trying to say!!
Only those who have faced that kind of water truly know how extremely difficult, taxing, and brave that was. And you made it look easy. Congratulations to you and the crew who pulled this off, and deepest condolences to the family on their loss.
Rest easy, Marsha, and Maggie. Wow! Absolutely inspirational. Giving this family the closure they deserved. Doug 1 - River of no Return 0! Much love to all those who love and miss Marsha. ❤ from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺

22:04 That. That right there is why you have my respect and admiration. Love the focus on the recovery process and the refusal to exploit grieving families. Doug, you are on the path you are supposed to be. Thank you for your incredible work 🙏💕
Doug, you are simply amazing...RIP Marsha and condolences to the family ... Love from Aussie 💗🇦🇺
Doug, you’re a good human being. My question though is, how are you doing, mate? These things would clearly take a toll on anyone. Are you looking after your own mental health my friend? 👊🏼🙏🏼
Thanks for you concern. I get asked this a lot. And it is definitely something I am focusing on. Thankfully I have a huge support system, great friends and family. Post mortem on every case I have a process to deal with the trauma and I have access through USC to first responder trauma/ptsd professionals.
Over the past 15 years I have recovered well over 150 victims in fatal accidents. And it was not until this year that I have taken the time to focus on me internally.
@@DougBishop You MATTER! Without You, so many families and their loved ones wouldn’t be found. You fill the hole that not knowing leaves. May God Bless you Doug, you’re a true Angel on earth. Thank you to all that help Doug with the post trauma and mental health help. It’s ok to admit when we need help you guys. It’s ok.
@@DougBishop Im so glad to hear you are taking care of your mental health. After 30 years in law enforcement and too many critical incidents to mention, I wish we had access to trauma support back then, but it was a time when we were expected to suck it up and get on to the next call. There is nothing wrong with looking after yourself after you look after others. Continued prayers for the safety of you and your team. Thank you for what you do.
@ZooZoo293 THANK YOU for your many years of service! 🫡🥰
Thank you for all you and your crew do to give closure to Families that have lost hope. Not knowing where your loved one is or even knowing but don’t have the resources has to be overwhelming. You guys are a true blessing. I wish they could have found the dog. I just hope he made it out ok somewhere down River. God Bless and Stay Safe. 🙏🏻✨🥰
Absolutely in tears watching this, it brings closure. But so sad that the pup had been washed away 😢 Well done Doug, that was a tough recovery.
