I'm so glad you did 'A Matter of Life and Death' (1946) in one of your videos. It's one of my favorite films of all time. Another is Jean Cocteau's 'La Belle et la Bete', also from 1946. Considering it was made in post-war France, the special effects may not be too impressive by today's standards, but that they happened at all is practically a miracle. Fred Astaire's 'dance on the ceiling/ from 'Royal Wedding' is worth a look, too.
Everyone complaining about the sound.. Y’all keep doing your thing. Techniques taught in this video are top notch. Sound is probably the easiest thing to correct compared to everything else here.
One other thing about Apollo 13....I read that when they screened it for the still surviving Apollo astronauts, a few of them asked where they got the archival footage from. The guys there on the day - the guys who knew everything there was to know about the Apollo rockets - believed that they were seeing real, existing footage of the launch. For the FX team, it doesn't get better praise than that.
Please explain the shot under the stream at the very beginning of the shower scene in Psycho. I just can't figure it out how they manage to have absolutely no drop on the image. And THANKS for all the serie, I love it!
Film Riot has been running for so long that I was a literal child when I stared watching. All throughout I went to highschool, film school, then grad school, worked as a re-recording mixer, and then ultimately switched industries 😅
Uh, at 7:23 our parent company's post production division hires actual musicians, composers, and they have a Music Supervisor and Foley Artists and ADR Department. We don't use stock music but if the Story or Script calls for it we would have the Post Division create on synthesizers by musicians.
Ryan, maybe you know the answer to this: when did movie credits move from the beginning to the end? I’ve been watching some older films and noticed that some have their credits in the beginning and end the movie with a simple “the end “.
I got one for your next "How'd they do this?" How did they make Kermit the Frog ride a bike in The Muppet Movie? Obviously it's a puppet with it's feet glued to the pedals, but was it pulled by fishing line? At one point it's got a very visible lean to it, so it would have fallen over, surely. And I don't see a track in the ground...
Please can you do the Doctor Who howlaround intros please, theyre really interesting. Its not really a movie and not really a special effect, but if the time tunnel from 2001 got it i dont see why not.
It goes a very long way back in film history. One common version was to have a forced perspective set of, say, a street. The actors in the foreground are adults on a normal scale set which diminishes in scale until the actors in the b.g. are children. On a period film they might be riding ponies or riding in pony-drawn carriages.
How about a spotlight on the movie Time Travellers? It's a cheap movie from the 60's that was featured in Mystery Science Theater 3000's 11th season (The Revival, it's on Netflix.) At the 33:00 mark (if you're watching it on MST3K) there's a scene where they take the head off an android which is just a person in a costume. It's all done in one shot, and they somehow swap a person's head... I went back and rewatched it so I could give you the time index, and the second time around I can tell exactly how they did it, but it really stuck out in my mind the first time I watched it. Even knowing how they did it, there are a lot of creative subtleties they do to mask the process that is worthy of some recognition.
I thought for sure on that last one you were going to say "No fancy green screens, no spinning of the set, they just built an actual elevator and used it between two specific floors built for the shot." 😀
They managed to make a giant finger for one sec shot, such dedication. I would have ignored that shot and take shot from another close or medium close!
Pls do a vid on how to do 1 takes but with multiple shots, like 1917 and extraction. But go into detail. How do you line them up in post if it does not match?
Yay! I got them all correct. Was particularly happy with getting the Star Trek one correct. Not sure if it's because I watched it on my phone and that's a smaller screen but the first 'scene' screamed fake to me. Maybe these things show up easier on a small screen?
Awesome effect info for the 300 shots, BUT what has baffled me forever and its probably just my misunderstanding of editing slow mo. BUT knowing that you cant have two different frame rates on a single timeline in an edit, such as 24fps and 60fps both coexisting in a 24fps timeline, because as i was told the 60fps would just play in 24fps anyways. I know speed ramping is a thing, but im still confused on this.
I think you get paid too little for the advertising you have in your videos. They are masterpieces, super entertaining and enjoyable, brilliantly written and executed. If not yet, you should charge a lot more for these ads. They really stand out from the masses. And of course the rest of the video is super informative too!
Apollo 13 launch is good but the engines igniting does not look anything like how the F1 engines light up. A fire extinguisher through a rocket nozzle, in no way!!, resembles the F1 Saturn 5 rocket engines lighting. Go and look at the 16mm slow mo launch footage. But it is still well done. Just not accurate.
Looking at that boat being towed uphill, thinking: gosh this sounds like one of Kinskis deeds... and of course there he stands, annoyed by the cries of pain of those with cut up/off limbs slowing down production, again. What apiece of shit who thought he was god. Like a Pharaoh dictating his slaves, still not being pleased while blaming them for diying. I mean even, look at the face he made constantly before exploding randomly on other people. Glad he's gone Good video tho 👍
"They" didn't name it "The Vomit Comet", all aircraft have been nicknamed that when used to train our astronauts to experience near-zero gravity since the 1950s.
I know and understand that you are a film channel and yes, films have music in them. But, when you are talking to us about how things are being done, please, pretty please with sugar on top, do not play any music (or more to the point, do not add any music to your dialogue track). For me (and as I have been told, not everyone) 'background music' during a host's talking is a very distracting thing. I am focusing on the information you are giving me and yet my brain also wants to pay attention to the music it is hearing. Very frustrating.
Ryans Corner was the best ad I've seen for quite some time.
Agreed. SO good
IMO it's their best ad since the Ford Fiesta one, that I still keep finding myself singing every so often "one two three four five six siete!"
He truly is better than all of us!
That Spock elevator shot's reveal literally had me laughing out loud. That's delightful. True movie magic!!!!
I'm so glad you did 'A Matter of Life and Death' (1946) in one of your videos. It's one of my favorite films of all time.

Star Trek's mirror gag is absolutely ridiculously underrated.
The first sponsor segment I actually wanted to watch. That is some fine acting, sir.

Wow !
That is, assuming this wasn't like when a parent praises their child's artwork, and the astronauts weren't simply being polite! ;)
You guys perfectly match filmography enthusiasm with technical know-how, no fuss no muss, it's always a joy to watch.
Please explain the shot under the stream at the very beginning of the shower scene in Psycho. I just can't figure it out how they manage to have absolutely no drop on the image.
And THANKS for all the serie, I love it!
Came for the special effects, stayed to Ryan's Elegance.
We definitely need more of Ryan's Elegance. There's not enough in the world lol
Oh how I missed the film riot ad sketches
Film Riot has been running for so long that I was a literal child when I stared watching. All throughout I went to highschool, film school, then grad school, worked as a re-recording mixer, and then ultimately switched industries 😅
that's quite a career already, young Man ^_^ *salutes*
I look forward to this. Please keep them coming and keep up the good work.👍
Still my favorite TH-cam channel of all time. Love you guys!
Can we talk about that perfect Musicbed ad? Okay lets talk about it. It was perfect.
Uh, at 7:23 our parent company's post production division hires actual musicians, composers, and they have a Music Supervisor and Foley Artists and ADR Department. We don't use stock music but if the Story or Script calls for it we would have the Post Division create on synthesizers by musicians.
I love Apollo 13 too, Ryan!! I love watching behind the scenes documentaries on this film, it still blows my mind how they filmed in weightlessness.
I've been waiting soooo long for yall to feed us some riot..😢
Ryan, maybe you know the answer to this: when did movie credits move from the beginning to the end? I’ve been watching some older films and noticed that some have their credits in the beginning and end the movie with a simple “the end “.
Love this SFX series. Y'all are hitting home runs every time here. Bravo sirs!
Probably one of the most amazing ad breaks ever made
Best sponsored advert ever.❤
5:49 was NOT expecting that "hello" with that voice lol! AT ALL
I got one for your next "How'd they do this?" How did they make Kermit the Frog ride a bike in The Muppet Movie? Crazy that im only now seeing #6, excited to catch up!
Fantastic episode!!
Please can you do the Doctor Who howlaround intros please, theyre really interesting.
Its not really a movie and not really a special effect, but if the time tunnel from 2001 got it i dont see why not.
Awesome! Thanks.
The ad was hilarious. Love learning about the hacks for these effects.
I was there for the Star Trek shots. B tank at paramount.
Great video!
Hey Film Riot, Could you let me know when you will have your next Sales on the Triune Store ?
The movie Alien also did the same trick with the kids.
It goes a very long way back in film history.

Learntainment at its finest!
Awesome! 😎

Is The Film Riot Podcast over? I liked hearing people in the film industry give their experiences and advice.
Practical camera shake is still one of the best things to do in your work IMHO
1:55 - 2:00 I have this film in 3D on Bluray and have seen it in 3D. The 3D is very good there.
I would love to see Steven King’s 1408 in one of these episodes.
Ryan's Corner is the new Turbulent Displacement!
Pls do a vid on how to do 1 takes but with multiple shots, like 1917 and extraction. But go into detail. How do you line them up in post if it does not match?
*Can you show us how they did the scene where Buzz Lightyear falls from the window in Toy Story 1.*
Love this one!
It would be epic if you guys did a corridor collab
I am too old for this stuff 😅🥰😍, Thank you 🙏
Hey Ryan, you should should the bridge crossing scene for the 1977 film Sorcerer and show it to the others to see if they can guess how it was done.
Corridor Crew talked to Robert Legato, who worked on the launch sequence of Apollo 13 and you should watch the extended version.
You guys have to tell us how you got that film grain in the ad to show up so clearly on TH-cam
Thanks!
I only knew the Telephone one and my only correct guess was the Ship miniature and I got all others wrong.
Good to know now!
I dig this series.
Did they stop this series? Why? It’s such a good series and there’s surely a ton more movie scenes to be explored.
Yay! I got them all correct. Was particularly happy with getting the Star Trek one correct. Not sure if it's because I watched it on my phone and that's a smaller screen but the first 'scene' screamed fake to me. Maybe these things show up easier on a small screen?
2:01 - Manaus, my sister in law lives there!!!
Love this series! How did it start?
Film Riot still exists? Oh good for you
I would not have guessed that 300 one.
could you do the effect from Spaceballs Where looking at now
Awesome effect info for the 300 shots, BUT what has baffled me forever and its probably just my misunderstanding of editing slow mo. Can you make a tutorial on how to create a rocket launch vfx effect like Apollo or space x
Neat!

And of course the rest of the video is super informative too!
Yes!
For sure we'll now never be able to unsee that. Thanks Ryan for ruining the film for us 😂
After all those practical effects, using the green screen for that turbolift scene seems almost... disappointing 🙂
My problem is that, not only do I not understand how the scenes are done…… I don’t even understand the explanations 😎
I love these videos, but I'm gonna have to have beef with calling 300 a classic 😄
do the death scene at the end of indiana jones 3
every german knows klaus kinski and made fun of this movie and the leader offering to kill him to the director :D
If you tell me that's real, YOU ARE WRONG..🤣🤣🤣🤣
Klaus Kinski butting heads with you, to be perfectly fair, is not a sign of bad leadership, either
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
❤
Here is suggestion , why not do an episode that promotes other film makers that are influenced and have used your tutorials,.
Apollo 13 launch is good but the engines igniting does not look anything like how the F1 engines light up. Glad he's gone
Good video tho 👍

still the ry guy can't match his Monday to Thursday consistentency
First
300 is not a classic film. It's a passable movie by a hack wannabe Ridley Scott without the talent, vision, narrative ability or originality.
I hate Jar Jar Abrams.
im earlyyyyyy!!!!!
Herzog has said that directors who use storyboards are "cowards". Having seen some of his "masterpieces", I'll stick with the cowards.

Gotta get some better dudes to interview. Boring the whole time.
Tik Tok kid?
No one says miniature like that
