- "Laura" is a 1945 popular song composed by David Raksin, with lyrics written by Johnny Mercer from the 1944 movie starring Gene Tierney and Dana Andrews. It has since become a jazz standard with over four hundred known recordings. Erroll Louis Garner (June 15, 1921 -- January 2, 1977) was an American jazz pianist and composer known for his swing playing and ballads. His best-known composition, the ballad "Misty", has become a jazz standard. Allmusic.com calls him "one of the most distinctive of all pianists" and a "brilliant virtuoso". This is my great Uncle and I remember watching him win the Grammys in 1976 I believe. My younger brother is named after him and the stories my dad used to tell about the younger cousins sneaking on Riverboats in Pittsburgh to hear ans watch him play. Hearing this breaks my heart over and over again. With tears streaming down my face. It's incredible to know he was actually a genius. He really was.
Deborah! Hello.....are you really lucky enough to have this genius blood in your veins!! Yes, his interpretations bring me to tears also. Tears of JOY!!! I saw him perform inzurich Switzerland...I could not believe the perfection of his performance. He just sat down and the music poured from his finger tips.... Heartbreakingly beautiful And I just loved the way he made those sounds as he played, like an accompaniment that could only be through him.....and his trio were really soooo ready for him.....they watched him and listened and knew on just what note they could join in.... Each time he plays a melody he makes a different interpretation of it, playing just what he felt he wanted it to sound at that particular moment...With love to you....I have sooooo enjoyed finding him again....

The genius is in our blood but few Garner's have been able harness their giftings - and in some cases the gift destroyed them. Yet we celebrate the master and I'm so glad we have met here. 🙏

He is still adored...by me too...I just happened to come across him last week on U tube,,,How fortunate. I fwdd Misty to my young grandson, and my son in Switzeerland, and. To my young relatives here in USA, to show them what real music is... and then Laura, and then, like him, I couldn;t stop!!!! ..They must hear his amazing talent too...They loved it...I was in my early 40's when I heard him in Zurich, and Now, he makes me want to dance....incredible what his music does for us all...my love to you. This man never took a formal lesson in his life--entirely self taught. A chosen few people have gifts that come from a higher dimension--Garner was one of them!!

Genius doesn't even begin to eplain the talent this man had. Best piano player that ever lived in my opinion. So complex, and yet he did it so effortlessly.

I remember hearing Garner's piano recordings when I was seven years old. Here I am, still enjoying them 70 years later. The definition of timeless.

I was ten years old when my sister got an album with Errol Garner's Love for Sale. I really loved it, and I was told that this pianist should not be taken seriously because he could not even read music.
That was one of the events that taught me never to trust adults.

This was my Dad's favorite song and Mr. Garner his favorite performer. I grew up listening to great music. Dad passed in 1967, at the age of 42. I play this on his birthday every year, in his memory.

Misty was my mom's favorite. She was Conservatory trained but in awe of Mr Garner. Took me to see him at Ravinia. I was a 60s rocker kid but he blew me away.

This is undoutably Garner's greatest performance. Perhaps the best recording of Laura in existence. I wonder what made Garner to perform so exquisitely on this particular song. This arrangement and performane of Laura is one for the ages.

Erroll and his fellow musicians are playing one of my most memorable, most loved tunes. Laura has been on my mind since I saw the film version of LAURA way back in about 1946 in my home country, Germany. Now I am 90 years old, and I am still in love with Laura!
Dear Deborah, I was lucky to see and hear Erroll in Vienna (Austria) KONZERTHAUS on April 29, 1969. And I have to say that this changed my life in so many ways.
In that time I didn't know Erroll and was not so much interested in jazz. But since then I can't forget this concert, hear everyday a recording from him, have a lot of recordings and also a book about his life. I've been working very long time for the Austrian piano producing company BÖSENDORFER (Erroll was playing on this piano in Vienna), which is still producing highest quality pianos. I was taking care of artists and one day a man (from USA) came to me and was asking for a practice room. When he finshed he came back to me and we were talking about music/jazz/Erroll. And all of a sudden he took a picture out of his jacket: He with Erroll. The man's name Jim Doran. He told me that this picture is always with him. Later he bought 2 of our grand pianos and his name is also mentioned in a book (in German) about Errolls life. Recently there has been a 1.5 hour long presentation of Errolls complete CONCERT BY THE SEA in the Austrian radio with recordings I have never heard before. Wonderful.
And YES, he was a genius. I was crying when he died in 1977.

Stefan, Thank you for sharing your beautiful memories both with Mr. Garner and Mr. Doran. I also read Mr. Doran's book "The Most Happy Piano" about Mr. Garner; and watched the documentary "Erroll Garner: No One Can Hear You Read", in which I learned that Mr. Doran himself is a pianist. Wish I was born when Mr. Garner was still alive, but I am grateful that I can enjoy his beautiful music whenever I want and get to know people's memories with Mr. Garner like yours.

His genius is reflected in his ability to be a magnificent conduit of creativity without intellectualization. His intellect actually got in the way of his creativity and his articulation of his magnificent music. This is why he was intoxicated whenever he played because regular human consciousness got in the way of a superhuman connection to the supernal. Intellectual awareness can be an impediment to a jazz artist. Make yourself a vessel worthy of holding all the light that can be offered to you and you will be a magnificent Beacon of expression and expressivity. He is absolutely amazed at what he plays. What manifests through his fingers is astounding to both The Listener and to Erroll. What a rare treat to behold! I crave his Mastery of the pitch space. Astonishing freedom at the Pinnacle of man's perception and existence.
Erroll Garner was one of those brilliant, naturally gifted musicians, who was able to make a piano sound like an orchestra. he played some of the greatest pieces in recorded jazz history. RIP Erroll

Wonderful. For those of us too young to have seen him perform live, it is great to see the joy that he emanates at the piano. Such an engaging performer, unlike some within jazz who would come across as deadly serious. What a genius he was, how sad that he died at just 55 years of age.

Fabulous!! This jazzy rendition is classic.
My initial interest in jazz was primarily guitar. Started noting the other musicians in the credits and broadened my horizons....horns, reeds, keyboards, etc. Got into Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum and others but somehow never really explored Errol Garner. My loss. I have a lot of catching up to do.

The first jazz concert I ever saw my dad took me to see him. Boston Globe Jazz Festival 1966. George Duvivier, the great bassist based in Boston, played with him. B.B. King was the 2nd act-with Roy Haynes-another joy of Boston-on drums. Buddy Rich Big Band closed and did West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein-the Pride of Brookline-who my dad went to high school with. Wow! What a great introduction to jazz for an 11 year old. Thanks dad. RIP!

That's incredible! I love jazz and although I'm still young, I've listened to it for years and I literally missed this truly great genius who I'm still discovering. It's a shame that Erroll, who had a pretty beautiful carrer judging things I've read on the subject, was pretty much forgotten after his death, even by the "aficionados" of classical jazz music. Hopefully, youtube exists. :)

I listen regularly to the talent of Mr Erroll Garner, each time I am in awe.
Just compare this version of "Laura" with another, more famous, recorded for Columbia some years before: they are totally different in terms of mood and phrasing. Garner did not know to read music, and he was famous about never repeating the performance of a given song; sometimes he played a same tune on a totally different key on consecutive nights, only because he didn't care about these. A truly instinctive genius.

That's part of the reason for Garner's extensive intros. That gave his sidemen time to figure out what he would play and in which key.
Yes and the bass player always stood above and over Erroll so he could watch his right hand and work out the key.
