- This is the SMG4 Mario is Smart Theory. With Revelations now completed I believe it's time we dive deep into Mario's intelligence and find the true answers to the SMG4 series by forming the greatest SMG4 Theory yet.

Throughout the SMG4 series Mario has shown several waves of unexpected intelligence which has led many fans to believe that he actually fakes it. However I asked myself is that really the case? And so I went and retrieved Jako who you may know from the SMG4 Iceberg and together we formed an SMG4 Theory regarding how Mario is Smart and how Mario fakes his unintelligence. Starting with SMG4: SMG4 Origins and working our way through a multitude of episodes such as SMG4: If Mario Was Smart to determine the likelihood of him having high IQ.

SMG4 AKA SuperMarioGlitchy4 is an animated series based around Super Mario 64 bloopers and GMOD AKA Garry's Mod. It has had many arcs such as the Waluigi arc the Rapper Bob arc the Anime arc the TH-cam arc the Genesis arc and the Revelations arc. Recently the Revelations arc ended the Cosmology portion of the show with the Revelations movie starting with SMG4: Mario goes to College introducing the Box Club with SMG4: Mario Suffers Infinite Detention introducing Niles to SMG4: Mario's Bus Trip introducing Niles name to SMG4: Mario and the God Box introducing the God Box and SMG4: Absolute Betrayal where Niles was confirmed to be Zero which made my SMG4 Niles Theory correct. Many arcs end in War of the Fat Italians such as War of the Fat Italians 2021 and the Wotfi 2021 rap. I like Wotfi. There have also been many SMG4 movie such as the 10 year anniversary special which was introduced in the Genesis Arc. I have made many SMG4 theories before such as the SMG4 Niles Theory the SMG4 Zero Theory the SMG4 God Box Theory and the SMG4 SMG0 theory with the SMG4 SMG3 theory and of course the SMG4 Axol Theory. Today though I look at the SMG4 Mario is Smart Theory and I grabbed Jako who you may know from the SMG4 Iceberg video. SMG4 is under Glitch Productions whom have made a variety of shows such as Meta Runner Season 1 Meta Runner Season 2 Sunset Paradise and Murder Drones Season 1 with Meta Runner Season 3 on the horizon. Sunset Paradise is a spinoff of SMG4 following Meggy which is not to be confused with Melony who likes Axol which got corrupted by SMG0 AKA Zero AKA Niles last year. The Genesis Arc was really a dark time for SMG4 and the Revelations arc. This is not a Reaction or me reacting to SMG4 this is a theory and a group of theories.

I personally think that E.Gadd's machine did work. It's not because people have knowlege that they are smart. It's one factor, but not the only one. A smart person tries to act for the best, while "Smart" Mario only cares about himself and his spaghetti. Basically E.Gadd's machine made Mario dumb, and like a lot of dumb people do, he pretends to be smart while he's not, even though he indeed has a lot of knowledge. But normal Mario probably does too.
Who knows maybe he's still have some of that smartness from after the smart Mario episode

there's also the fact that Bob and Mario successfully ran a hotel, AND managed to keep it 5 stars, with things only going awry when others got involved(like the hotel's closure in the 2021 Christmas special.)

Plus, Bob was smart enough to engineer the entire rapper Bob arc with him planning out every detail, from Boopkins falling into the well, to the mansion getting blown up, so he is obviously smart.

This theory also explain the detail of mario being a little more smart every video. Mario is starting to secretly reveal his true identity so he can finally be acepted by his friends.
And it's also him maybe building proper social skills overtime and learning to be less uptight and selfish.
Think of it like this: He was ultra simple and honestly bland, just like the real mario who lacks any real personality, after being made dumb he gained a ton of crazy personality and over time went too far into the smarts department. It seems this uber smart mario has been slowly melding his two states together to become a true mario with peronality and is fun to be around... but still smart enough to know when to be serious and handle a situation.
For example in the zoo episode he was really the only one being logical with his one moment of "Is this a good idea?" more a rare moment when we see in his head of "Is this a good time to be dumb and create chaos? eh, sure whats the worst that could happen?" and later on as I said before he was being the only one questioning the insanity at all.

I actually lowkey agree with this. It'd be fucking sick if something like this was addressed in canon too! That makes me wonder though, what other things would Mario be insecure about, like genuinely? Cause there's a multitude of evidence of Mario being fairly emotionally intelligent and self-aware, he states himself that he just has a hard time articulating it. I'd love to see a more in depth dive into Mario's character, at least in terms of his emotions, and this theory definitely brings more of that into light.

Though this is an amazing theory, I personally think Mario doesn't lack that much social skills if he was not stupid. After all, every time he comforts Meggy, he is always being absolutely perfect,thoughtful and awesome.

I like this theory, I think that this theory has to do with something with that moment from "Clown Fever" when SMG4 tells Mario to "be himself"
This comment is a year old but this is shown by the fact that Bob is shown in at least one episode to be omnipotent, even though it's never mentioned again

In The Meme Games 2022, Mario single handedly constructs a giant flying death machine with lasers and giant robotic arms…
He’s also seen clapping at the end, confirming that he knew and expected that he would be beaten, presumably only when Saiko and Kaizo teamed up.
Meaning if he did engineer the entire thing just so he could end the Saiko Arc, it means that if he wanted to defeat everybody on the SMG4 cast for real, he very easily could do so.

I would like to talk about this more: So Mario managed to make this machine ALONE! SMG4 Mario made this ALONE! But Smart Mario also made a giant robot which is SMART SMG4 Marios device when he went crazy. So that makes sense.
What actually confirms this theory is the episode where Mario is the last man on earth. This shows Mario being very reliant on his friends for his own personal mental health.
Without them, Mario veers on the edge of total insanity but this episode shows how Marios friends are dismissive of them. The recent lawsuit arch shows him being proactive in a manner that indicates his smartness and genuine care for others.
Oh my God, that actually makes sense! What if this theory is actually true? What if you cracked the code? Mario done some really smart things most of the time. Because he is smart! I hope this theory is true, man.
New theory idea: does peach despise smg4 because he's the reason why she'll never have her Mario back.
Either that, or peach doesn't really show up in videos frequently (and at this point, she's not gonna make an appearance anymore)

In “Meggy Answers Your Questions”, she explicitly states her suspicions that Mario could be secretly a super-genius and that his dumbness is a facade.
So not only could this theory be true, but Meggy might be the only one who knows of Mario’s true nature.
probably mario is not super super smart, but at least he have his normal Iq back, and in the earlier seasons mario was minus stupid, but conforming the seasons passed and new characters appaeared mario started to act a little more stupid progresiavly at that point starting to act more dumbass

Interesting theory, but if being stupid is the main draw to be in SMG4’s videos, then what about characters like Luigi, Meggy, or any other main character who’s at least average in terms of intelligence?

Meggy is popular because she was part of a character arc. First she became a human, then gained a new voice. Luigi was popular due to his cowardly personality and constantly bullied by Mario, but over time, Mario rarely ever bullies him and Luigi starts becoming more competent. That's character development. Luigi and Meggy are popular due to character development.
Nowadays, Stupidity is not just the main draw, but also character development.

I think it's not just foolishness, but rather insanity and childness
Episodes made in the year following this video only bolster the "Mario is secretly smart" hypothesis even more, plus his extreme fear of losing his friends -- "If Mario Was the Last Man on Earth" is a good example. He also knows his limitations so in the Lawsuit Arc he went straight to Phoenix Wright (showing Mario knows who and what Phoenix is). If Mario has a clear goal, _especially_ if it involves Meggy or Luigi, he's an unstoppable force. He just can't do math and has dyslexia.
EDIT: One thing that was already out there when y'all made this video but was skipped is Meggy's Q&A from 2021, which I'm pretty sure is canon since most things she mentioned in it later appeared in the show (like her cat Loaf). In it, she said flat-out she thinks Mario is a lot smarter than he lets on. She's the ONLY one who seems to realize this… You'd think Luigi would but he's easily traumatized and has to deal with Mario's antics on the daily.
What if Mario was dumb because he liked it ? We see it in the Mario Documentary : just by being an idiot, he gets almost everything he wants. What if he realised that ? That would explain why he became evil in If Mario was smart. He makes his friends hate the smart Mario and prefer the dumb Mario, asking him to stay that way. The only times Mario shows his intelligence is when he needs to survive, when he needs to save the world or when he wants to help his friends. He only shows his intelligence by necessity, and stays dumb the rest of the time when no one truly needs him so he can relax and be served by his brother and his friends.
Maybe Mario is faking his stupidity to protect his friends from bowser, as he has been in Smg4's videos and is faking his stupidity too, and make the most devious plot in the history of Smg4 and is waiting for the right moment to finally take universe over and if he finds out that Mario is faking his stupidity, he would capture his friends and would force him to be his prisoner and could take over the universe
I’ve seen a few people comment things about Mario being emotional at times, so here’s my mini-theory to tack onto this one, maybe egadd’s invention did work, but it only reversed the emotional part of Mario’s brain, which is why he doesn’t feel any fear for being smart around his friends anymore and why he suddenly lacks the emotional intelligence he once had. Now having it back he thinks that his friends would hate him and pretends to be stupid again but the real reason his friends hated him wasn’t because he was smart, it was because he lacked his emotions, or something like that idk
Mario has showcased multiple events where he becomes insanely power and defeated greatly powerful beings such as his ego in "he does it to em" and in Meme Games 2022 he has a giant freaking robot.
This is so cool Im exited can't wait for this theory and there have been times were Mario has been serious and dosent make mistake in serious momments like in the revelations movie.

I think everyones IQ was permanently lost but if they applyed themselves they can still learn, medic probably went to college (or going by TF2 lore didn’t) and learned medical stuff but forgot all the experience he learned when he was a cashier.
With Mario he has been on so many adventures he has learned how to think quickly and out smart opponents, while being unable to do math (at least until he learned from baldly) he didn’t regain his IQ from when he was Super Mario but he learned from when he was Stupid Mario.
Adding onto this, in WOTFI 2022, he says "It was very scary living in a world without you two" so if he thinks his friends will leave him if he reveals he's not dumb, he would be left scared, thus adding reason for him acting dumb.
This could also explain Mario’s Action in Smg4’s Battle Royale when He pushed off Boopkins and Saiko.
This deed was most likely done because he and SMG4 would most likely get backstabbed. He’s not taking any chances.
I know im late, but i wanted to point out that in the newer released episode, "POV: Youre Mario" Meggy and Mario compete in a competition for who can last the longest in each others shoes. The episode ends off with Mario getting upset over his loss, and Meggy sympathising with him, saying something along the lines of
"I understand how difficult your life can be, mario. Heck, having to be stupid and living in this world 24/7?"
I seriously struggled trying to make this comment make sense.. Just go see the video, youll see what i mean and how it REALLY links up well with this theory.
I believed that deep within in Mario there is a smart Mario, the orginal Mario that sometimes helps Mario do smart things, which is why Mario is sometimes some what smart and a complete idiot other times. But this makes more sense.
back in the era of "Starman" and other multi-colored marios, there was an episode call Smart(ass) Mario, in which Mario loses his memory because of some God or w/e and he becomes smart. Then later they get Mario's memories back because he acts like, not as destructive as in the modern "Smart Mario" episode but more boring.

This would be good for SMG4's final arc or episode. They reveal these secrets about Mario.
First of all you forgot to mention the 2 videos where everyone was crazy and insane except Mario. Mario runs out of toilet paper and Mario goes to the zoo
Second I thing E Gadd’s machine does actually work. It just doesn’t work on Mario because he’s too smart
Third I think the real reason Mario acts dumb is because he noticed it gets SMG4 popular and he wants to keep 4’s channel alive so his universe can live on
Other than that I 100% agree with this theory. I’ve been noticing since last year that he’s been getting smarter and smarter

I feel like the meta reason for the van scene is simply it’s funny when the dumb character recognizes someone’s behavior, and I while it would be an interesting twist, I’d be more in favor of the possibility that instead of being smart secretly because he’d think his friends would hate him, that Mario would be hit by something related to the SMGs, or something outside “flips some internal switch”, to where instead of Mario being super dumb or hyperintelligently smart.. Mario would be Mario. That hero from the Mushroom Kingdom saving princesses and getting cake for it, expecting nothing else. Where he feels horrible for how his dumbness put plenty of people in so much danger, and heavy regret for hurting Luigi a lot, even if his dumb self still loved him

Mario faking his personality to get people to actually care about him and not being able to express himself well is very relatable to me due to me masking my autism for so long. If I dont fake who I am on one will like me or at least thats what I think will happen.

The idea of Mario being smart brings into question how it would seem even the laws of the Mushroom Kingdom's universe were turned 'stupid', as physics and logic seem to be flexible, and how he would manipulate them. Examples of this can be seen in his apparent immortality even in almost fatal damage, such as his head coming off, or his manipulation of his nose. A smart person in an environment like that, with knowledge of how to control the randomness, could be all powerfull.

You also forgot in “if Mario was among us” Mario also made a fake green crewmate, tricking brown into thinking he killed green.
I think that the machine just changed Mario's daily routine and that's why he acts smart even though he already is. He specifically said it reverted brain patterns meaning he probably reverted what Mario usually does turning into the person he actually is and fears. But that's just my take on the machine thing. Good video!

Also to add, in the ask Meggy special she stated that she suspects he is not as stupid as he lets on so that is another piece of evidence if you would consider her answers cannon.
There where literally allot of scene where Mario is by himself and still acted stupid, so he may not be faking it
Mario once tricked Baldi to go somewhere that Mario wasn’t in during the episode “If Mario Was in Baldi’s Basics”.

this is a huge theory and could be true because many of the scenes were outshined because of the plots that happened during those times like the when Mario during revelation or when Mario confronted Meggy when desti died saying he wasnt good at anything
There are more instances of Mario being smart. But I don't want to make this comment too big, so I'll only add a few examples.
In "If Mario was in... The Sonic Movie", Mario learns that Eggman is going to do everything in his power to expose Sonic to Swag, and Mario does everything in his power to stop Eggman.
In the beginning of "Steve Fights Everyone", Mario warns Kirby, Pikachu, Fox, and Captain Falcon about Steve because he knows how powerful Steve is and how much he cares about his chickens. Later in the episode, Mario paints Sonic, Incineroar, and King Dedede green so they'd get blown up by Creepers.
In "World War Monke", when Boopkins tells him about him being taken in by the monkeys, Mario was left in disbelief since they've only been in the zoo for 5 minutes.
Here's a few more examples.
In "If Mario was in... Friday Night Funkin' 2", during Mario's rap battle against Ruv, Mario pulls out Toad to use his voice to get an instant win.
In "Mario Battle Royale", during the final seconds of Mario's battle with SMG4, Mario's gun runs out of bullets. While SMG4 was laughing, Mario pulls out another gun and shoots SMG4 while his guard was down.
You should send this to SMG4, he could make it an Arc.
So if Mario and Bob were secretly smart the whole time and were just faking it, then what about Luigi and Wario? Does this also mean they're faking it, because if so that wouldn't make any sense, especially with Luigi. They didn't notice that being dumb was the key to success, so why would they be faking it still?

Honestly, I think TheAwesomeMario is actually dumb, but he has some areas of actual intelligence. It's like a Crash Bandicoot situation. For example, he may not be able to work a compass, but he is able to use his surroundings to his advantage against certain enemies. So, maybe he is dumb, but he's an excellent problem solver.

I do think it true tho because we see mario fight a lot and most of the time he uses what he know to his advantage and won because of that.

Update is that Mario did a meme challenge and has gained much more intelligence in recent episodes
I want to add some elements in favour of this theory :
- In the early videos, the vocabulary of Mario was more complex than now, and he often used irony ;
- Sup'bro : Mario discovered by himself that SLG4 was lying about being SMG4's brother ;
- The dialogue in Meet the Mario : "I think in the end, I'm just a guy trying to get through life. I'm not the smartest person and I don't have much friends... But as long as I have my spaghetti... I'm good." ;
- Casino, cards and chaos : At the end, The trick that Mario used to defeat King Bob-Omb when he was chasing him in the casino (with the gnome Mario) was pretty clever ;
- Mario learns to type : At the end, when Mario fights against Mario's head, he managed to correctly type all the words ;
- Detective Mario & Pikachu : The whole Mario's plan of stealing Bowser's statue and when at the end he was pretending to be stupid so that Pikachu wouldn't look in his basement house. Thus Mario can easily fake his stupidity.
- If Mario was in Baldi's Basics : At the end, when Baldi was gonna kill Mario for not knowing what "2 + 3 =" was; he suddenly gave the right answer.
But even if it's a fun theory (the video was really interesting by the way), I think that Mario is in fact stupid. But great work of research.
Personnaly, I think that the "Bob is smart" theory is more coherent though.
yeah in the early videos mario has not much needed to be stupid, that's the reason that in the first 3 seasons mario used irony and acted moderately more smart, only being a little idiot for the moment but acting more normal, but when new characters started to appear mario was needed to act more stupid

I can agree with this theory especially since "pov your mario" seems to confirm mario just likes acting stupid since its easier doing regular stuff

You see, mabye the machine hitted Mario, but he already was samrt (as you said before), so the laser needed to hit something else, cuz it can't just dissapear in to thin air, so it hitted Mario's sense of fear. Bob was stupid, just wanted fame and h*e's.

Personally, I think Mario kept a bit of intelligence after being shot by E.Gad's SMART BOI 9000. I think when E.Gad shot Mario with the version of SMART BOI 9000 which makes people dumb, I think that it made Mario's brain smaller, so he lost IQ instead of reversing IQ, so he kept some IQ after being shot.
In the new episode where he's tasked to watch over the (gas?) Station because boopkins needed to find a new microwave. I noticed how he's not his usual over the top stupid. In fact hes actually managing the place all by himself pretty well. And the only reason it got destroyed was because swag and bob destroyed it with their antics. Like yeah Mario was still his stupid self. But i noticed that he wasn't as stupid. He is capable of managing a job even. I theorize that no one really notices these odd instances because to them it's "good old silly dumb mario" and sum it up as another wacky antic.

in DO NOT ENTER mario tricks sakio in telling her he was going to the bathroom, fakes he went after saiko told him where it was, then when she wasnt looking he went back to sneak into it. He also used an oven as a flamethrower and kept sneaking away to get into her room.
In the lawsuit arc in one video i cant remember he was able to easily persuade his creator to let out all of the non nintento characters out of the jail and get pheonix's help.
And probably one of the darkest episodes was If Mario Was the Last Man on Earth. In this episode mario goes insane because hes alone and misses his friends and his friends only abandoned him for a world record pizza. Man started hallucinating for how insane he went showing that he dosnt want to be alone and actually cares about his friends. There are a lot more, too many.
I think in eggads episode, the machine did work
He was turned stupid by revealing his smartness. We already know why its a silly idea for him to reveal his brain power, so him being made "stupid" would cause him to make him fault

When i first found mario and smg4 he was just a channel that made me laugh but as i and his channel grew in 11 years i watched him go from a small channel to an amazing adventure that i and manny others will never forget

Considering recent episodes... yep. Its like he gained 10 iq as of recent, which kinda feels like a polar opposite to how he has been since the beginning, but this seems more than possible Id say.
actually 2 smol theorys here:
1. maybe it is just a thing were some times marios iq becomes normal and goes away like pulses since almost everyone has had a smart moment in the show
2. the reason they mostly hated him in that episode was becuz he was trying to steal all the spaghetti which makes sense so even if the machine didnt work maybe he still pretended to have the stupidly high hunger for spaghetti even while smart which proven by the games isnt true since in the show (the tv one) its shown he likes it but not that much to do that
I don't think Mario minds being "stupid" it seems like he really enjoys his character
Theres a recent example in the episode where Meggy was helping Luigi and Tari get over their fears where Mario makes a gigantic haunted sewer out of just a small house.
I honestly was thinking hard about this theory and the two possibilities that I see is that it is either smart Mario or it can be the original Mario before smg4 arrived.
In the newest episodes confirmed that Mario all he did in life was work 24\7 from the day he was born to now in the present, so maybe Mario fakes his stupidity because he wants is more fun life then a stressful life.
Mario isn't exactly a reliable narrator, BUT it does prove Mario remembers his life from before SMG4 corrupted it, and it's consistent with his unwillingness to star in another game when Miyamoto came calling in the Lawsuit Arc. So… yeah. After 30 (now 40+) years Mario's having a lot more fun going on "stupid meme adventures" (his words), making non-canon friends, and using his avatar powers knowingly or not to warp reality. I think he is dyslexic though

And that’s the fact that we see mario’s brain in the mario’s inside story video and it’s really tiny to show how dumb Mario actually is, this detail may prove this theory incorrect

I was hesitant to watch this but yeah I have noticed that Mario in the videos is getting smarter…taking it a step further, he’s more friendly in newer videos unlike in let’s say…Mario creating NFTs….he cares a lot more now
