Thanks for sharing this! John is a great player and human being. He is a great storyteller too. Regarding Jerry's cutaway; Gene Martin did the chopjob on Jerry's Baldwin. Gene was the brother of Benny Martin, the famous bluegrass fiddler. Gene has worked for Sho-Bud and Grammer Guitar. Besides his craftsmanship he also was a good guitar player and even recorded an LP in '63, called Country & Western Confidential (A Backstage Expose). Jerry himself said the following about the cutaway (from an old Reed website): "Neither Paul Yandell nor Ray Butts had anything to do with the old Baldwin Cutaway. Benny Martin’s brother, Gene, cut it out for me so I could get down the neck. But Paul has setup just about every guitar I’ve played, and there’s none better. If you want to know how it plays now, you’ll have to ask Paul: because I gave it to him. I do use a Ray Butts pickup in my Fender." Paul Yandell once mentioned the following on the Chet Atkins forum: "Gene Martin Benny Martin's brother did that he worked at Sho-Bud, Jerry had another classic made by someone in St Louis that was cut like that and I think that's where the idea came from, thanks paul" In a video recorded during CAAS 2006, Craig Dobbins briefly talks about the cutaway when actually playing Jerry's Baldwin. He said the following: "And if you noticed, it has a real chopjob on this side. I forgot the name of the guy, but it was a man who worked at a shop in Nashville. I hope he is not in the audience right now or else I'm in real big trouble. But Jerry said "I want a cutaway". He (Gene) said "Well 'bout where do you want it?". "Well 'bout here (makes a vertical gesture)". So that's what he did."
The Bud in Sho-Bud, is the great steel player Buddy Emmons. I bought the tape recorder that you see in this video from his estate sale. He used it to record home demos back when. I also bought the rocking chair that you see in my front porch videos from his estate sale. A little trivia for anyone who cares.
thank you for this Otis. In 1978 I was doing construction work in Tallahassee, Florida. On a Saturday I went to the library where they had record albums you could listen to. That's when I first heard Jerry and Chet. A few months later I drove to Nashville where I bought John Knowles' book of Jerry Reed guitar transcriptions, 5 Jerry records, and a left handed pedal steel. I never learned to play as well as Jerry, but fast forward forty some years, I was at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society this summer and was happy to meet John Knowles. I was too nervous to say anything intelligent, but he's really a beautiful, intelligent soul as were Jerry, Chet, Tommy Emanuel, and so many of the thumb pickers who descended from the styles of Merle Travis and Chet.
When I was a teenager I lost control of my car and took out Jerry Reed's fence line in front of his house and he came out and laughed at us and when I asked him how much he was going to charge me to fix his Fence he just laughed and said: " pay? hell son, you made my day." this was in 1981 and I'm old today but will never forget that one.
LOL! Great story! Speaking of knocking down fence's, along with other thing's, my buddy popped a right rear tire going thru a 90° left hand turn in his 70 Roadrunner, it sent us spinning thru a fence & also took out this old man's power pole in his front yard out in the boonies one night! We got out to survey the damage as the old fella came stompin out of his then pitch black house tote'n a long double barrel scatter gun & oh man was he pissed! He pointed that monstrosity at us & said loudly "You two punk's get in your souped up hotrod & get the hell off my property...NOW!!" LOL! You ain't never seen two 18yr old's move faster in a busted up hotrod with a flat tire in your life! 😂 Sound's like your interaction with JR was much more civil than our's was with that old man! Make's sense though, JR was just the coolest guy ever, no wonder Elvis & Burt both just loved the guy, but then again from all accounts, Everyone who ever met the guy just loved him 🙏

Great interview! Jerry Reed is one of my favorite guitar players! A quick story. About the 1983 Jerry was playing a honky tonk about 60 miles from my home that me and a friend went to every weekend. Line dancing was the big thing at that time. The club had a small dance floor in front of the stage, before the 1st row of tables started. A local band opened for Jerry and right after they quit playing, people start heading to the stage, me and my buddy included and everyone sat down on the floor. Well Jerry's band comes out and start up with the smokey and the bandit theme and out comes Jerry. Playing and doing those funky body moves that he does and it was awesome. No cell phones back then, but people had brought cameras and flashes were going off as people would walk right up to the edge of the stage to get a close up. Everyone was polite with taking a pic and walking back to take a seat. I will never forget, a great looking chick walks up to take a picture just as Jerry finished a song. Jerry says to her " Baby, you don't have to take my picture, I will go home and sit on your dresser!" LMAO. It was a great show and the crowd was into the music, and it was like Jerry was playing just to you. Sorry so long. Thanks for letting me share Ottis.
I love Jerry Reed. If I had to choose a favorite song....I would select 3 or 4 with different styles. "Guitar man" as a fast song with lyrics, "The claw" as an instrumental and "I love you (what can I say)" as a sentimental choice. But I could replace those 3 with "Amos Moses", "Struttin'" and "A thing called love" which are equally worthy. Many people see Jerry with a country boy image but I think Jerry was a musical genius. Unique and irreplaceable., son!
I can’t remember what it was but a long time ago I was watching a show about Jerry reed and they showed him at his house. It looked like a regular home in everyday subdivision and he was driving a Ford bronco.Seemed like a humble and gracious man.
Reed was actually a good person, clower wasn't that nice, I did a gig with him, and he used my PA and we had a run in backstage for awhile, he wasn't that funny off stage, and very much had a primadonna attitude
I love this and the part of the story about Jerry getting on the CB radio I was there that’s all true God bless Priscilla and Jerry Reed (Hubbard). He was my hero so proud to played with them and have him as a friend
to me jerry reed is one of a kind as a guitar player and as an actor.......ive often heard it said .....jerry reed is a thinking mans guitar player. i know this much ....... they broke the mold after jerry reed. gonna go listen to me n chet now........thanks otis
I can remember the times Jerry would be on TV, he would be all country charm & silly and then the music would start and WOW he could play, it was such a pleasure to watch. It wasn't till years later, when I started to play, that I realized what a phenomenal player & entertainer he was. Lucky TH-cam let's us all travel back and watch the "Wildman" do his magic. Thanks Otis for another great story. Cheers!
My favorite movie in terms of pure escapist entertainment is Smokey and the Bandit that led to me buying Jerry Reeds music. To this day I love the thoughtfulness of a thing called love and my favorite grove of any record Amos Moses. Jerry Reed belongs on the list of truly great composers and guitar players.
Jerry Reed wasn’t your traditional country music artist but he sure was entertaining. I felt that he had a real gift to be able to play and sing the way he did. “We’re gonna do what they said couldn’t be done...” sort of says it all.
@@jimmysapien9961 I loved those weird songs growing up, the funny ones like the smoking song, and along with Ray Stevens I think they had started a new genre of comedy country
My Dad always kept 8 tracks of Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Lefty Frizell , etc in his van . I was a little kid just starting to get into music , mostly listening to the Beatles and Beach Boys because those were the records my siblings had around the house. One night Dad let my friend and I ' camp out ' out in the backyard in his van with our sleeping bags. Pretty soon we decided we wanted to hear music so we started playing those 8 tracks and right away we were in love with that music. It was the first real instrumental guitar we'd heard outside of the Ventures and Lonnie Mack, who were more rock and roll . It was like nothing we'd ever heard . Just incredible playing and I've still never heard better

wonderful! Having learned many of Jerry's instrumentals, I have a deep and abiding love and respect for his genius. I had the joy of having dinner and spending an evening with John Knowles and his wife and they are a class act.
I love East Bound and Down cuz it's the first one I heard and I love love love Amos Moses cuz it's so damn ridiculous and yet I believe it could be true. I think he hides the depth of emotions he feels with most of his energetic, fun and lighthearted music, but it does slip out in some songs and you know it when you hear those songs because you just know it. I always come late to the game with everything. I'm just discovering Jerry Reed now because I recently became a trucker and stumbled upon his awesome trucker music and now I'm addicted to him, of course after he's gone. But he's still here or I wouldn't have discovered him in the first place. I adore him. And thank you for sharing so many great stories. They're very comforting and entertaining.

I listened to this again and I was not familiar with Lenny Breau and Buster B. Jones. I looked them both up and they were great guitar players too. Jerry Reed was definitely one of a kind.
That was a great interview I love to hear that it was wonderful I would love to hear you tell some stories about anything you know about Ernest Tubb he was my hero he was such a kind and generous man very talented very giving anyway God bless you brother much love to you and thanks again for the wonderful videos
Always loved Jerry Reed. Of course He was one of the best guitar players ever really. he was just so good it was mesmerizing. Additionally as a kid watching anime movies and on shows where he was playing talking, he just seem like a fun person, like someone you want to hang around with. He seem like he was every man’s friend. And that was inspiring. Thanks so much Otis
I don't think you could be a kid in the 70s and not know who Jerry Reed was. Oh, you may have only known him for fun songs, but man... he could really pack a wallop when he wanted to make you think or feel.
His fun songs are always great. But one of Jerry's I like is (And I don't know if this is the title) "I'm So In Love With Loving You" One of his serious ones. The movies he did we're always great. But one most never talk about is "Survivers" I thought him and Robbin Williams were as funny as can be. But just my opinion. 👍👍
Thank you so much, this one really means the world I'm crazy about Jerry at the moment and am really loving everything I find. Thanks for sharing John's stories, you, him and Jerry seem like men I could really get along with ✌️ Peace&Love
Thanks a million for sharing this. I really love seeing Tommy E. playing with John. Back when I was in High School and had been tryin to play Chet for a few years.... but I just couldn't get Freight Train or Windy & Warm 'clean' like Chet.... Then I heard Jerry play Amos Moses and and got excited. My folks got me "Me & Jerry" for Christmas and I went to a pawn shop and bought an old Goya g-10 Classic. And figured that what Jerry was doin just didn't sound that tough... LOL 🤣😁😁40yrs later I'm still tryin' to figure out how to play Stump Water. At least I don't have to wear out the needles on my phonograph anymore.
Second request of mine if that's okay. How about some Muscle Shoals stories? I feel like it's such an understated part of music history and I'm always surprised when music fans are unaware of that history.
I've had a Jim Dickinson book on my night stand for two months. i keep meaning to talk about that, but other stuff keeps jumping ahead of it. I'll definitely get to it at some point soon. : )
love the stories as always and love the cat! i love when we get footage of your curious kitty on the lovely couch checking out ur show...of course the todd snider one is out doable but this one is awesome too
A couple of years ago Tommy Emmanuel talked John Knowles into going on tour with him. I caught a couple of the shows. When they were in Portland someone broke into the van and stole a couple of guitars. Life on the road for a touring musician.

@@otisgibbs Thank you Otis. Good Stuff man!
Good stuff.
I listened to this again and I was not familiar with Lenny Breau and Buster B. Jones. I looked them both up and they were great guitar players too.
Jerry Reed was definitely one of a kind.
Thank you Otis, I enjoyed the photographs you provided too. Many singer-song writers are great photographers. :)
Thanks, Artemis!
Excellent. Thank you!
Thanks, Ted!
Another stellar interview man, thank you for sharing. I love getting insight on my heros.

Thanks, Rodney!
Jerry reed was the best one of a kind
This is just lovely.
Incredible. Thank you!
Thanks, Nylan!

That cat has a nice couch!
awesome!!
That was excellent,, thanks so much Otis !
Thank you!
I don't think you could be a kid in the 70s and not know who Jerry Reed was. Oh, you may have only known him for fun songs, but man... he could really pack a wallop when he wanted to make you think or feel.
I think you might be on to something! : )
What fun! Thanks, OG
Thanks!
His fun songs are always great.
But one of Jerry's I like is (And I don't know if this is the title) "I'm So In Love With Loving You"
One of his serious ones.
The movies he did we're always great.
But one most never talk about is "Survivers"
I thought him and Robbin Williams were as funny as can be.
But just my opinion. 👍👍
Good call on the movie, Elden!
Thank you so much, this one really means the world I'm crazy about Jerry at the moment and am really loving everything I find. Thanks for sharing John's stories, you, him and Jerry seem like men I could really get along with ✌️ Peace&Love
Thanks for caring about this stuff, Aaron!
A thing called love
Wow! Really great stuff Otis.
Thanks, Bob!
Wow !
Thanks, Daniel!
Thanks for sharing! It’s cool to see how fast your channel is growing!
I appreciate ya digging this stuff, Ricky! : )
Enjoyed knowing Bobby Bare &Jerry worked together.
Certified Guitar Player..

Thanks, Stephen! Frankie is asleep next to me right now. All of this internetting wears him out. ; )
Cool
Another country guitarist that sounded funky was Dale Hawkins. Any story about great Dale?
1-3 Smoke and Bandit dvd in my movie collection
Guitar man!
Remembering
SON !
A couple of years ago Tommy Emmanuel talked John Knowles into going on tour with him. I caught a couple of the shows. When they were in Portland someone broke into the van and stole a couple of guitars. Life on the road for a touring musician.
I didn't know about the stolen guitars. That's frickin terrible!
❤
My favorite Jerry Reed song is lord Mr ford
That Cat has the look of Cosmic Intelligence.
John Knowles. I think the author of A Separate Peace has the same name.
Ever hear of Paul Yandell that played with Chet
Yes sir.
