Quint's monologue about the USS Indianapolis is, in my opinion, one of the best and most chilling ever done. The fact that the actor, Robert Shaw, was actually drunk probably made it even better.

American actress, Lee Fierro, who played Mrs. Kintner in Jaws, once walked into a seafood restaurant in Massachusetts and saw that the menu had an "Alex Kintner Sandwich." Fun Fact: The reporter on the beach was Peter Benchley, the guy who wrote Jaws.
I'm sure some other commenters have mentioned this, but Bruce (the shark, which was named after Spielberg's lawyer), didn't work all the time. The mechanics had problems with the water, so they had to work around it. That's probably why it's so good, because of the suspense with the music and seeing the swimmers from the shark's POV. When they would get the shark working, they'd make announcements on the island where the crew was staying, so they could all hurry to the beaches/docks and get back to filming. Also, the shooting stars you saw in the background were a happy coincidence. In fact, they didn't realize they were there until they went back and looked at the film.

Jaws is often referred to as the original Summer Blockbuster and catapulted a young and upcoming movie director Steven Spielberg into directorial fame and launched his directing career which already had success with a movie called the SugarLand Express. The USS Indianapolis Monologue spoken by Quint is all the more terrifying due being based on a real event. It is historically accurate as well.
Originally the mechanical shark nicknamed Bruce, after Spielberg’s Lawyer, was supposed to be seen often but kept malfunctioning frequently do to the affects the salt water as the movie was shot in Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts and in the open ocean off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard which was a very ambitious gamble on the part of young Steven Spielberg.much credit is given to the musical score and Spielberg’s on the spot creativity in finding ways to insinuate that the shark is present using thing like the yellow barrels.
The music or shark Jaws theme plays a roll in the way you hear or don’t t hear it. When you hear it means the shark is likely present and when you don’t hear it the shark is not present. There is a behind the scenes video of the making of Jaws as well as one that I think is great in explaining why for its time the mechanical shark was a great movie monster that audiences could believe in due the direction of Steven Spielberg and the musical score compose by famed movie soundtrack composer John Williams.

I was in my teens when I saw it on opening weekend...Century Plaza cinemas in Los Angeles. Waited four hours in line...it was a great Saturday with my friends. Got a standing ovation at the end.

Such a classic! I’ve loved this movie since I was a little kid.
I’m 36 now, but when I was 9 years old I did an ice skating routine to the Jaws theme song. I was dressed in blue sequins with a shark fin and my prop was a small inflatable raft with a manakin in it dressed as a fisherman (complete with hat and pole). The ‘fisherman’ had his leg hanging over the side, and at the peak of the song I swooped by and snatched his leg right off.
The leg was stuffed with blood red fabric and I finished the routine carrying it around the rink like a trophy. I guess the fabric, which looked fake enough up close, was quite realistic from the stands 😅
    I got first place though!

The "mile swim" isn't a merit badge. It is its own award given for swimming a mile. I got three of them when I was a kid. The first and most boring was from just swimming back and forth in a pool on a river. The other two were more interesting and had me swimming from one place to another, once in fresh water and once in Corpus Christi Bay. I was more worried about a peg leg sailor wanting to "harpoon the white whale" than by a shark. That one was fun.

Seeing you two react to one of the most iconic and classic movies ever reminds me of how deprived your generation is for excellent quality movies. These days, everything is done with green screens and computer graphics, but the REAL art was practical effects, and although "Bruce The Shark" was a huge animatronic creation that broke down a lot, the look of a practical effect far exceeds the false reality of CG.
Jaws came out the year I was born, and it launched not only Steven Spielberg's career as a director, but also John Williams' career as a movie score composer. That iconic "dun-dun-dun-dun" bit put him on the map, and John Williams went on to score the Star Wars movies. I swear that after I saw "Jaws", every time I went near a body of water, I had to see if it had sharks, and I'm talking swimming pools AND even freshwater lakes! "Jaws" is so iconic that it is quoted probably the most of all films, and certain scenes are also replicated in other movies.
About that shooting star effect you both caught, it's not real. It's kind of a lens flare, since those scenes were actually shot during the day and the camera had filters on it to appear as if it was dark. What you saw was a flare of light off the lenses that even fooled astronomers for a time. I'm surprised those shooting star/lens flares didn't end up in a lot of films, since shooting night scenes during the day was something that was somewhat common back in the day.

Fun facts: the man who plays the reporter at 13:45 is the same man who also wrote the book! Also, the point where the actor who plays chief Brody sees the shark and says, "you're gonna need a bigger boat" was the first time he sees the shark, and the reaction he gives to first seeing the shark was kept for the movie!

  • @FeaturingRob

The Indianapolis monologue was partially written by the actor playing Quint, Robert Shaw. Shaw was a novelist as well as an actor, and he asked if he could take a crack at the monologue as no one was happy with it. Unfortunately, Shaw was an alcoholic and told Spielberg he needed to have a few drinks to make the scene work when they shot it. During a take, a drunk Shaw passed out. A few hours later, humiliated, contrite...and still pretty buzzed, begged Spielberg to shoot it again. Spielberg, who was furious, relented and they shot it. Two takes, I believe...and one of them is in the film.
The "You're gonna need a bigger boat" line (which usually gets a laugh) was something buzzing around Martha's Vineyard the summer the film was shot. Everybody on the cast and crew was saying it, as when they went out on the water to shoot the boat the crew was on was not big enough. Ultimately, Roy Scheider (Martin Brody) improvised the line for the scene in the film.
There was a love-hate relationship between Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss (Matt Hooper). When Shaw was sober, he was charming and got along with everyone including Dreyfuss. When he had a few drinks, Dreyfuss kinda became Shaw's punching bag. There was a bit of tension on the set. Ultimately, Dreyfuss forgave Shaw, as Shaw died two or three years after the film came out.
There was a play, co-written by Shaw's son Ian Shaw called 'The Shark's Not Working'. Ian is the spitting image of his father and played him on stage in the play. The play is a three-man piece about the filming of 'Jaws' and the characters are the three leads Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, and Robert Shaw. As the play suggests...the filming of 'Jaws' was an ordeal that was way over budget and way over schedule because of two main factors...filming on the water is hell on continuity for the editing process, and the shark (called Bruce, after Spielberg's lawyer) broke down constantly. Which is the reason why you rarely see the full shark.
The news reporter on the beach was Peter Benchley, the novelist who wrote 'Jaws'.
This was Spielberg's second big-screen film. He had done 'The Sugarland Express' with Goldie Hawn, and a lot of television before this. This was the film that coined the term "blockbuster", because people were lining up, around the block to see the film consistently. And in a time before multiplex cinemas, and lots of single-screen movie houses were still around...the lines could and were hours-long wait times. The film is still one of the top-grossing films of all time, and adjusting for inflation it is the 7th highest-grossing film of all time (about $1.17 billion in today's dollars).
John Williams won an Oscar for the score.

At 6:38 actor Robert Shaw ("Quint") looks strikingly like my Grandfather: the face, the hair, the laugh, and especially the way he talked when "Quint" gives his famous monologue about the USS Indianapolis. He almost mumbles when he talked, and when he laughed and talked, it was sometimes hard to understand his trailing-off words. Every time I watch Jaws, I can't get over how much I see my Grandfather in "Quint"
