That is insane! I got a Onkyo TX-NR-717 receiver from 2012 (higher mid range) it is rated for 110W/Ch @ 8 Ohms with a dynamic of 160W/Ch @ 8 Ohms. This video made me curious about what it can do!

The only thing about this is doing these tests in 2 channel. I know the dyno will only test 2 channel but these amps drop power output if your driving all 7 channels. Would be nice to know how much.
I had an 818, and the HDMI chip died on it after about 15 months. (I bought it new.) Back then they had an extended warranty for this issue. Onkyo sent me a box, I sent it back to them at their expense, and they repaired it and I had it back in a month, and it’s been fine ever since (in my bedroom system.) If you buy one of these things used, it would be well to ask if this had already been done (the extended warranty expired 5 or 6 (?) years ago.)

You should organize your amp dyno runs into 2 playlist One for Home amps, and the other for car amps. I really like that you run these test. I was expecting the onkyo to give you issues, because they are know to shut off at high volume.
Dereck BigDWiz I like the home receiver test do some more, I have Sony str-k850p receiver and a adcom gfa-5500 home amp to it would be cool to do some test on similar products keep testing!
+exoticg9 lol, sorry. I tested a couple I had laying around but didn't do videos. I think I saved the videos of the NEC, just need to find them. It was impressive down to 2 ohms IIRC and even the rear channels were nicely underrated
My Yamaha A-S301's (modern amplifier designed to mimic the look and sound of a vintage 1970's version) specs are really trolling. It's rated for 60wpch into 8 ohms, 90 into 4 ohms. Me thinks it can do a bit more then 95 watts at 4 ohms 0.07 thd lol.
Nice!!! If I ever decide to drop my old Yamaha receiver (unless it dies & genuinely can't be repaired, I very highly doubt it), I'll keep that Onkyo in mind as I'd need to keep the old school RCA and digital input connectivity as I'll never give up my late 70's record player, 80's tape deck, or 90's CD changer. I wouldn't mind having HDMI connectivity and switching for the Blu Ray Player and cable box (and any future HDMI equipment) and be really happy to have to not down sample Dolby TrueHD/DTS Master Audio content to Dolby Digital/DTS standard. Although I'd still only stick to only using 5.1 audio as my living is not large enough for a proper ITU 7.1 (or more) speaker layout...
+Dereck BigDWiz Yep, I looked it up. I'm sure it can easily be configured for 5.1 in the settings. My actual problem is that I'm still very happy with my Yamaha after all these years. Although it could go into my computer room... Maybe... ;-)
is 1% THD the lowest you can put the dyno? because 1% distortion if ok to test a subwoofer but not very good indication on a full range amplifier to much distortion!
Yes, 1% THD or clipping is what Amp Dyno measures. Many amp tests over the years have been measured at clipping, so 1% just gives more info. From what I've seen, there is a small difference in most amps between 1% THD and clipping.
BigDWiz it would be nice to see what amps test at for minimal distortion settings. Like if they rate it at 50W and and .05% thd. Is that what you're actually getting?
Yeah and get your hand on some Rotel receivers they rate there stuff at all channels simultaneously, there real nice to with the volume in the centre and are hevey To
1 percent or less is the standard full range. Even for big expensive power amps. I run ati and outlaw with an onkyo txsr876 as my pre. Ive had tons of other gear too. Sub amps are generally fine at 10 to 20 percent thd. Some getting as high as 30 at some output and frequency but it is not as apparent as bass is essentially distortion.
What channels on the Onkyo did you use to test it? The front left and right? Commonly, these two channels are "driven" and the electronics behind these two channels are much more beefed up than the rest of the channels available (center and surround channels). I would be curious to see if there any output capability differences between all the channels on the receiver. Great video! This is the first time I have seen a home theater amplifier being dyno'd.
+Brian Eaton Yes, the ratings on Onkyo's spec sheet mention the wattage with only 2 channels being driven, so these are the ones I tested. Someone else mentioned testing the center and rear channels to see how they perform. Only issue is I can't "load" all channels with resistors and can only test 2 channels at a time. I don't want to use speakers as the test is at 1kHz and I need what's left of my hearing ;-)
+Dereck BigDWiz shouldnt have to load all the other channels to test the center/rears, though it would be interesting to see if loading them caused power loss to the rest of the channels and it wasnt just a hardwired limit.
+Brian Eaton On my Onkyo the two front channels have the same components as the surround channels! Though on the older home theater receivers that is correct. I have a 1990 Pioneer VSX-D1S, that can do 130W/Ch on the fronts and only 50W/Ch on the rear and center channels!
im diggin this video something different im into all audio home and car id be interested in a vid of the home setup im puttin mine together now just bought a 65" LG led 4k tv lookin and home receivers next id like to see a harmon kardon on the dyno
OK so I had this receiver on to Polk floor standing speakers set in stereo and my Denton rated 75 watts blows the 626 out of the water and yes it is the budget Denton so..........
Thanks, I always appreciate constructive criticism! I recently added playlists for Home Audio Amp tests, Pro Audio Amp Test, Car Audio Amp Tests and more. I have nearly 500 videos on YT, so yeah, they need to be organized better. I'm hoping YT eventually has a better way to do this than just playlists.
now divide that by the amount of speakers you have hooked up and that's the real number. 500ish/7= ??? Not so great. Does that model have preouts? Separates are the only way to go
+CobraProductionsTV I bet that's true, but Onkyo rates it in the spec sheet for the 2ch mode, so the fact it's underrated based on this is a good sign. Loading all channels will put a load on the power supply and drop the wattage for sure
+Dereck BigDWiz I do find it strange that is so massively underrated, AND that it was stable going into 4 ohms. Some home amps that i've seen simply turn off as soon as they see a load that is lower than they are rated to do. So i wonder if this Onkyo is only protected by a sensor that switches it off when it gets too hot.
+CobraProductionsTV it's really nice, but the amp is rated for 2ch and only upto a 0.08%THD .. so that 1%THD dyno is going to show a drastically higher number

Speakers connected there is no way it delivers that wattage , I have my volume No at 46% , Max is 78 % on the 636 with CELESTION DL6 . If I turn the volume UP , the audio will distort & flatten out , the speaker is fine . This amp is about 60 w each channel unless you are pushing a HARD tone through the amp to get that Wattage reading ???
I have only had this AMP for 3 day s , second hand , it as not been used much at all . Its the software has not been set , still working on it , NOT a good idea . thats why I was disapointed with it on day one . Apart from the HDMI which is pointless and the board only last for about 2-3 years this amp has a big suprize in sound quality . 160 WATT a channal holds a lot of POWER reserve without any distortion for home use . THIS AMP IS A (( BEAST ))

could you test via different inputs like say cd in or aux in would there be the same results ?
+zigzagman837 Results should the the same. I can't test digital inputs as my test head unit does not have digital outputs
NAD 208/218 would be fun. I enjoy your Proton Video.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
hi, i got this nr626 model... can i hook the floorstanding klipsch r820 (150w -600w) with no worries in a long run?
Should match nicely
@@wal some here says that underpower amp will cause heat and fry the tweeters is it true? .. im a nood in electronics.
Do more filled channels on 7.1 = less per channel? Or does it stay equal when using more then 2
Meant 7.2
Wow that was really good power.. Very cool..
Does this amp have HDR technology?
They make the best home receivers.
I just got mine. nice unit
Does the power output change if all channels are driven? Big D Wiz??
I did not test with all channels loaded
@@wal I know. Maybe a future video idea? Because I heard a lot of amps only rate x2 channels... But could have many more
im diggin this video something different im into all audio home and car id be interested in a vid of the home setup im puttin mine together now just bought a 65" LG led 4k tv lookin and home receivers next id like to see a harmon kardon on the dyno
im a huge fan of cerwin vega (older models) speakers just cause there insanely loud but im lookin at Klipsch for my setup now
i hope my tx nr-646 can put out just as much
+Fernando Magdaleno I bet it does.
Can you test onkyo txnr575 at 6ohm
A must to dyno is the Denon AVR 3803. It is a tank! A little old by todays standards though.
Need to check w/ my brother, he has an older 38xx series Denon
626 amp is a better amp from onkyo,I love it... Still am using it!!
4 Ohms?
nice, good find
Id like to see a Old School Marantz dyno
😮😮That is impressive
Yessir
Yikes! Onkyo only rates this to drive loads down to six ohms. Glad you didn't see a puff of smoke.
OK so I had this receiver on to Polk floor standing speakers set in stereo and my Denton rated 75 watts blows the 626 out of the water and yes it is the budget Denton so..........
But that’s not al channels driven
True 👍
GrimaldiScaleKustom No home recievers are rated with all channels driven.
ooohhh snap😱 that's some home power. ✌out Big D
+2BASS IS 2SLAP I've said before I want to test home and pro amps also!
+Dereck BigDWiz I'd love to see more non-car audio amplifiers tests.
Especially since I am more a Home/Pro audio kind of guy (:
not to bash your tests at all like your idea, just needs some refining, and should make playlists and categorize the test into equipment type cheers!
Thanks, I always appreciate constructive criticism! I recently added playlists for Home Audio Amp tests, Pro Audio Amp Test, Car Audio Amp Tests and more. I have nearly 500 videos on YT, so yeah, they need to be organized better. I'm hoping YT eventually has a better way to do this than just playlists.
oh nice i just found your videos good job keep them coming! cheers from
Canada
Onkyo doing work... cool
👌😬👍
Nice performance in 2 channel....
+John Furious strong amp 💪
pls do Onkyo TX-NR5008
i have one and it blasts
now divide that by the amount of speakers you have hooked up and that's the real number. 500ish/7= ??? Not so great. Does that model have preouts? Separates are the only way to go
No pre-outs on this model. The TX-NR 828/838 have pre-outs.
Man those onkyo are always having weird problems I'm sure a lot of them are no problem but it seems like they fail often
I have two of these 626 receivers, both bought as refurbs and they have been rock solid
BigDWiz what speakers would be good with this unit?
Wait for the bga chips fail
Well this is different. :D
Big D....where did you buy it? Refurbished.....how much?
Direct from Onkyousa.com. I believe it was $349
I think if you run all 7 channels at the same time you'll get drastically lower ratings. Still nicely overrated though
+CobraProductionsTV It did shut off when I tried 2 ohms dynamic! When I turned it back on, the screen displayed "check speaker wires" :-P
+CobraProductionsTV it's really nice, but the amp is rated for 2ch and only upto a 0.08%THD .. so that 1%THD dyno is going to show a drastically higher number
+CobraProductionsTV the beauty is how often do you ever need full power on all the channels?
IS THIS RMS RATED
+Rodney Persaud all of my tests show RMS power numbers
THANKS MAN I GOT THE YAHAMA V573 AND IT DOSENT SEEM TO BE AS POWERFUL AS I THOUGHT JUST WANTED TO SEE FIRST HAND HOW POWERFUL A RECIEVER SEEMS TO REAly be thanks think im gonna get an onkyo
ONE MORE THING WHERE CAN I GET THAT AD-1 DYNO TO PURCHASE LINK PLEASE THANKS
I've dyno'd my Sony DA3600ES and it did over rated
+Zionslayer1 I bet so! Those are built well.
oooo i see
Speakers connected there is no way it delivers that wattage , I have my volume No at 46% , Max is 78 % on the 636 with CELESTION DL6 .
If I turn the volume UP , the audio will distort & flatten out , the speaker is fine .
This amp is about 60 w each channel unless you are pushing a HARD tone through the amp to get that Wattage reading ???
My tests show RMS power (in watts) measured with resistors. The measurements are accurate
THIS AMP IS A (( BEAST ))
don't think your test is very accurate.. not hating at all but these amps are terrible and never ever do what's advertised. Google some bunch test and see what it really does
The Amp Dyno was designed by former Rockford Fosgate head engineer and has been verified accurate. I really don't get comments like this.
Does this amp have HDR technology?
