A spokesperson for the International Monetary Fund criticised the tariffs announced by US president Joe Biden on imports from China. The IMF has said that trade restrictions will "fragment" the global economy, and that the US will be better served by maintaining open trade policies. The critical comments came days after Biden announced tariffs ranging from 100% for Chinese EVs and 50% for Chinese solar panels. In India, some exporters worry that cheap Chinese goods may flood the Indian market and affect the local industry. Even in January, Indian steel makers had lobbied the Indian government to hike tariffs on steel amid a rise in cheap Chinese imports. They should. Indian producers are using too many Chinese parts and products and aggravating national security concerns by upsetting the trade balance and allowing China to control supply of key materials.
