    One of my favorite quotes from Magda Gerber (author of Your Self Confident Baby) along the lines of helping a child when it's not needed: "Be careful what you teach, it might interfere with what they are learning."

      Thanks for sharing, Sean. Magda Gerber had a great deal to offer infants, and really all of us.

    Thanks for sharing this. I wondered why my kids get frustrate with me. Particularly my oldest. Its almost like this is how discipline works.

    I have a baby embarrassing moment of being an over zealous “taker-overer”. I went to a Starbucks and saw an elderly man on a laptop straining to type. I offered to enlarge the font and he scolded me! I was shocked to say the least. This helped me understand my wrongdoing. That’s exactly what I do with my babies! And they hate it just as much! Thanks!

    Excellent information on how we can begin to apply the Montessori thinking at home when communicating with children. Thank you for putting this out there. I look forward to more.

    Jesse, love the video. Question: you mention that, while you love Haim Ginott, he’s not perfect. Aside from Ginott and Montessori, who should we read? And are there specific things that Ginott talks about in Between Parent and Child that you recommend learning elsewhere from others?

    • @jessemccarthy
      @jessemccarthy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael, for infants you can look into RIE. In terms of other big thinkers I recommend related to children, it’s only really Karen Horney, but she can be dense and didn’t specifically do work for parents. She was a therapist in the early part of the 20th century and wrote/spoke on self-development, e.g. ‘Neurosis and Human Growth.’

      Jesse McCarthy, thanks for the reply. I’m reading Baby Knows Best as we speak, and I’m finding it really interesting. Similarities to Haim Ginott, Montessori, etc.

      Glad to hear you're gaining from it. Montessori's reach of course is enormous, and Ginott had a very specific influence on some of today's parenting approaches, for instance you might know that the authors of the very popular 'How To Talk So Kids Will Listen' had Ginott as their mentor. Shoot me an email if you find anything particularly insightful: jesse@jessemccarthy.com. Cheers,

      @@jessemccarthy Thanks for another great recommendation. I'm about half way through 'How to Talk So Kids Will Listen,' and it's really good. When reading 'Between Parent and Child,' I remember thinking "Man... I wish there were even more examples, and then more detail in terms of where a conversation might go if things don't go perfectly," and 'How to Talk' basically fulfills that wish. Awesome.

    The Montessori way of teaching is an excellent reference to teaching but if you don't have the skill that you need to be a good teacher you will fail. You either have that love for teaching or you don't, and no program will make you a good teacher. YOUR either born with it or your not. It's silly how this guys starts off the video talking about teachers feeling prisoners . If you feel like a prisoner your going to be a bad teacher move on to another career. The principals and values of Maria Montessori have been distorted here in the States....Some people go into this career not for the love of teaching but for the incentives and they turn out to be very bad teachers and make students to fail....

      What kind of incentives do they go for?
