I’m so happy they still believe in the classic XC90. It’s such a good vehicle. I think they decided to not give this car a bigger battery as it could have made the EX90 less popular, because some people maybe wouldn’t buy an EV if there’s a 100+ km EV range PHEV.
Not that they believe but calculations made it facts that EVs aren't taking over any time soon if we're honest. Also, bigger battery would require either new battery technology or platform redesign. Hopefully they made electric motor more up to date as well as software changes for better.

We hear so much about BYD's innovation and commercial success with PHEV drivetrains, it is surprising that Geely's PHEV innovation is not there . . Volvo's T8 remains basically unchanged for the past decade, especially for this important late-cycle refresh.
The T8 got a major update in EV usability a few years backs. We'd the launch model XC90 and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get more than 17km out of it on EV. The petrol would kick in incredibly easily. The current power plant I can get past 60km range without having to manage it. It will also hold electric mode past 100kph. It's not the best, but they did improve on it.
This is what happens when you don't get any preorders for your overly expensive undercooked electric SUV and you end up trying to facelift a 10 year old car in 12 months. What a mess. Basically the same car that released back in 2015. Toyota 4Runner of Europe. Even the powertrains didn't change. Hybrid battery is way behind competition. Also look at that funny interior. They tried adding a bigger screen without changing the layout, it looks like someone DIY installed a bigger screen on an old XC90 (which is what they did).
What a strange post. You realize the EX90 preorders where sold out already in april? And the XC90 drivetrain has been updated multiple times and works brilliantly.
Updated airvents! No more bulbous center console. Interior feels much classier and fits its price range now. Grille looks better live than it does in the pics but hard to say if it will look out of date in a few years (the new Audi grilles are pretty garish). The outgoing concave grille is timeless as it closely resembles the later year P1800.
Bright dusk - so fresh and so clean! @5:10, nice that you bought a suit just for this. It's amazing that the XC90 is a decade old (launched in 2015) but still looks so fresh alongside much newer cars. This facelift has freshened it up even more. I like the grille and updated Thor-hammer headlights. They don't 'open' and 'close' like on the EX90 so will likely be more reliable and less expensive to replace. I am also glad they kept the integrated instrument cluster and physical buttons.
Good facelift, looks very nice. The screen now protrudes from the dash, which is not great, but the infotainment software is much, much better. Some pros, some cons, but this is mostly good. Looks classy.
Such a clean design, can appreciate it even though I prefer the more elegant design of the pre-facelift. Great video! P.S., VW also does the integrated child seat (sometimes) :)

I was dead against the digital screens thing and almost cancelled my BMW when they changed the infotainment to iDrive 8 while I was waiting for it to be built. The idea of a fully digital car display seemed like a bad idea. In reality it works fantastic as the vast majority of everyday functions can easily be controlled by voice alone. It works first time, every time, which means you no longer need to take your eyes off the road or hands off the wheel like you would, even with physical buttons. Of course the Volvo system may or may not be as good as iDrive 8 though.
Admittedly the most important thing for me was a hopefuly larger battery. My wife has the 2022.5 18.8kwh, which actualy gives out a real world range of a bit over 50km / 30mls. When the competition inches closer to double that, we would have hoped for at least a 25% boost in electric range. Seems we will not be upgrading
Perfect facelift…Perfect car. No pianoblack plastics, no ugly hyperscreens, no cheap night club ambient lightning, no fake exhausts (like a certain german ”premium” brand). Classy and elegant.
At first I was tempted by the EX 90s styling although not looking for an electric car. But this redesigned XC 90 is simply irresistible inside and out. Not to mention the upgrades to the suspension and the laminated windows and added insulation for a quieter cabin. I imagine the price for a well equipped B6 will be in the low $80,000 range which is reasonable considering what you get. In comparison the existing 2025 models now in production will be sold off at bargain basement prices. But I’ll wait for the new one. By the way, I’ve always liked your reviews. Keep up the good work and your little squeeze is a pleasant addition.
Quite a timeless design which Volvo has perfected on the xc60. This xc90 is very elegant but somehow it feels wrong that they kept so many elements of the previous one. It is like saying “we ran out of money so we decided to do only a facelift”. I love Volvo but that won’t be enough to compete against the other brands.
They invested too heavily in electric. I believe they wanted to fully replace the XC90 with the EX90. This is their quick turnaround trying to recover.
I think this looks better than any of the fully electric vehicles that Volvo has ever made . It looks so classic yet cool . Massive big thumbs up from me.
As a T8 -18 owner, we are very happy with their recent move that they didnt make XC90 2025 an all new design, which makes the current model not feeling that dated yet. Likewise, the X5 F series vs G series is a massive difference.
This interior design has aged so well that it doesn't even feel old! And looking at the cost cutting of lots of the German brands recently, this really is quite good. I think they updated what they needed to (mainly the infotainment) and left everything else that worked as is, which is really refreshing to see. Good job Volvo. I think this is even better than some of their EVs. I'm sad they killed the S60 in the states though... they sold pretty well and I see a lot of them on the roads.
XC90 has more personality and more beauty than Mercedes GLE, BMW X5, Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7. And about comfort, the german brands cannot compete against Volvo.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing. Finally Volvo released the next generation of CX90, it took too long to upgrade this generation. The executive team needs to pay attention to compete with other brands that coming up with new design faster than V. Face looks so beautiful but the back pretty much the same. Also it keeps many details from current version.
I really like this brand and model but the biggest problem with current Volvos are the lack of mechanical and software reliability. Don’t know how the materials are, but on the latest XC90 some plastics are pathetic.
Agreed. The build quality went south with the B variant. Not so say that my T6 is any better. Nothing but issues with that car. Looking to get rid of it soon.
I always loved the model and when I sold my 2019 X3 considered it. Test drove it and then did my homework. I realized that my perception was the same as the other users. Bought the X5 and I got a say it is far superior. It’s a shame they went south.
But I wanted the diesel version. Those are quite unreliable and for that reason discontinued. Also the build quality of some dash areas was quite poor.
Great car, great review! Thomas, where did you buy your suite? It looks like a perfect combination between soft sweatpants materials and casual business style !!!!
I am undecided on the grill... The previous vertical ones seems quite adequate. And even though this is a face lift, quite disappointing there is no soft close option for the doors.
great update Volvo did. A nice and smooth evolution. A bit disappointing about the drive trains. They could've optimized them further. Look forward to see if the engine is made more quiet as I find them quite noisy.
On the lack of phev range upgrade, they seem to do this in off years instead of aligned with other updates. For example they were last upgraded in 2023 model year. Or at least that is when it happened for the US market.
Say what now? The XC90 is still alive! As the former owner of 2 2nd gen XC90s, both T6s, im happy its still around and this new facelift hasnt ruined it at all! Nice one Volvo! However, im glad that the electric range is not huge as its enough for most as is with the T8s and was never meant to be a full EV so i think it's fine, if anything the battery should be smaller to shed the car of some weight and the 4 cylinder strengthened and made a bit more powerful. A mechanical AWD system would be nice for the T8. Nice one Volvo.
This competes with the Range Rover in terms of design. I mean what an influence it had on the modern 7 seat SUV back in 2014 that just an evolution of the design looks stunning as always. Best Looking SUV is back with a bang. Stunning.
In the exterior it was a step down in the front. Would really prefer the pre-facelift version... Also don't like the screen in the center console. I loved the previouse model, were it was integrated in the dashboard, but they need to save money!! It is much more inexpensive just to atach a screen rather that integrating it...
@@ClonewarswarsClone You're not getting it. The whole dash area would get too large then. A free floating screen is fine. People need to get used to it.
Great review as always Thomas, I am glad Volvo still has come faith in ICE. However, something that really interests me is your suit, the fabric and color looks really nice. What brand is it if I may ask?
It's good to see they just did small upgrades to the previous model, the design and this new interior are very ok, the only thing they should have done is put exhaust tips.
Just a small correction. The pure electric mode can take you easily up to 65km without paying any attention to how you drive. If done properly you can even achieve up to 75-80km in perfect conditions. So it's daily usable for most people in pure electric mode. It's just a shame that contrary to the xc60 it can't start in pure electric mode. So you have to vhange it every time you start it which is a hassle and doesn't seem better after the facelift since I saw that you still need 3 presses to get to the drive menu
An impressive facelift. I’ve had my 2016 R Design for 5 years - this would be an excellent upgrade if they’re not too greedy on the rates and prices for the trade ins. I’ve never been able to justify making main dealers rich by buying new.. be nice to buck the trend and get one at a great price.
Hi Thomas, the rear row Child Booster seat was a feature in both rear seats in a VW Passat from about 1993. They even have a sun roof with solar cells inside the glass panel that will power the car's fans to extract hot air when parked outdoors. I guess u were not a driver yet at that time? I know bcos I had 2 x passats n 2 x passats cc. I miss how VW made innovative cars then....1.8T

It's not the best, but they did improve on it.
@@patrickdaly5988 60km is very disappointing when most other offers 100km+ ev range on their PHEV car this days.
They did update the battery size since 2021. I am assuming they left is as is due to packaging constraints. It is a healthy size for a PHEV.
@@lewisreford8552 yet, is the most reliable plug-in hybrid…
There is no competition on EU market from China hybrid cars, so there is no reason for legacy makers to change anything.
Beautiful Car, Much cleaner now, while other companies are just throwing as much of chrome and plastics parts on the exterior as possible.
It will be ok, life goes on
I'm no expert, but this car looks beautiful and elegant both inside and out. I like it.
What a strange post. You realize the EX90 preorders where sold out already in april? And the XC90 drivetrain has been updated multiple times and works brilliantly.
You just can't buy it haha
@@matmul4850 you are an expert, because your individual opinion when assessing and buying a car is the ONLY opinion that matters!
Love the update especially the front very purposeful square
Nice .. The facelift ❤ looks a little bit better than the old one.. I want change my old X5 to this one! Btw nice review dude!
Great video as usual. The best in the business. Love the car - looks very clean and elegant imo.
Good facelift, looks very nice. The screen now protrudes from the dash, which is not great, but the infotainment software is much, much better. Some pros, some cons, but this is mostly good. Looks classy.
A panic rethink on dumping everything for EV it looks like from Volvo.
Such a clean design, can appreciate it even though I prefer the more elegant design of the pre-facelift. Great video!
P.S., VW also does the integrated child seat (sometimes) :)
Looking sharp Thomas!!
Thomas is the only car reviewer who chooses his wardrobe to match car design and colour. A fine touch to all of us and this is why we like to watch your videos. ...and Leah's too, who's charm is unmatched. 💎🏆
They really killed it with the 2016 redesigns. The entire series still looks new and awesome. Very clean and elegant design language.
£200 fine and 6 penalty points in the UK if you use your mobile phone yet every new car has a giant mobile phone stuck to the dashboard 🤷♂️
Ain’t that the truth… I’m a sucker for physical buttons because I know I can keep my eyes on the road while doing what I want them to do.
Physical buttons is going to be privilege of Rolls Royce and Maybach customers. 😔
Love your videos and you're among the quickest to unveil the latest launches.
A Swedish Range Rover but more reliable. Love it!
More like Chinese Range Rover…
@@Tobi-ln9xrnot in Europe
@@leandros7662
Of course in Europe. Volvo is a European car brand…
Volvo was bought by Geely, a Chinese car manufacturer.
@@Tobi-ln9xr I know that. But the EU vehicles from Volvo are still made in Sweden.
I am a swede and this is not swedish anymore man
The grill is beautiful. Everything is beautiful except the outdated air vents and small screen. Polestar vertical screen influence, I suppose.
What competition can double 50km range on battery PHEV? There's literally no 3 row PHEV that can go 100km.
Totally agree battery needs to be larger. Needs at least 50 miles of EV range before engine turns on.
Don't stop Thomas , go ahead : you're wonderful , thank you🎉🎉🎉
The exterior refresh looks great.
Gorgeous and Thomas is fully co-ordinated with the interior colours !!
Love the looks, love the color! My dream car ❤
Perfect facelift…Perfect car. No pianoblack plastics, no ugly hyperscreens, no cheap night club ambient lightning, no fake exhausts (like a certain german ”premium” brand). Classy and elegant.
Hey. Thanks for a great video! When do you think a test drive video will come out? :)
Gorgeous, love it. Perfect facelift
Volvo just said that will not go full electric by 2030. The market has different gears apparently.
Third facelift hehe. Great way to keep a great car alive ( minus the engines and gearbox ).
That front grill is nice
Looks pretty good, love the color. Traditional European/American/Japanese automakers only offer white, black, grey, silver, red and blue. Boring.
11:07 VAG used to have booster seats in Sharan/Alhambra too.
Does this come with auto parking ???
I immediately noticed the suit. Good choice Thomas!
Looks great! And thank God they have kept a real dashboard and gaugecluster. I absolutely hate the "non-dashboard" in EX90 and EX30.
I am rarely moved by a grille, but that is a very nice styling experiment!👍🏼👍🏼
What is the starting price for this Volvi?
I think I would prefer the Lexus GX550 Overland. And should be more reliable, too.
Thomas, that's a really nice suite bro! Please inbox link for brand.. love it man 👍
XC90 has more personality and more beauty than Mercedes GLE, BMW X5, Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7. And about comfort, the german brands cannot compete against Volvo.
I'm convinced that the xc-90 is a much better option. than the discovery specially with the oddly designed back.
I prefer to have a little bit lower trunk space and better leg room
Nice review/ About the middle child seat solution: Volkswagen offers that in the Multivan as well.
The T6 and T8 are totally reliable for my experience.
But I wanted the diesel version. Those are quite unreliable and for that reason discontinued. Also the build quality of some dash areas was quite poor.
@@scotie690 ohh, didn’t know that. Never heard of issues with the D5. Even the old 2.4 was pretty well known around me.
One of the most beautiful SUVs. The front with the new grill is particularly beautiful. Much better design than Audi, BMW and Mercedes
Best car ❤
Thank God they kept the powered shade for the pano roof! Now bring that to the EX90!
Great car, great review! Thomas, where did you buy your suite? It looks like a perfect combination between soft sweatpants materials and casual business style !!!!
What a beautiful car! Any idea when the new XC40 mild hybrid with an updated interior is coming?
If they have integrated climate module with physical buttons instead of "music" module, this would be almost the perfect car
How is the reliability of the XC90 T8 full hybrid? I might consider one, but want to make sure they are reliable enough...
The front grille is a masterpiece 😍
windows - option
door soft closing - no
electric wheel adjustment - no
10 more mins. let’s see whats new apart from bumpers
Fantastic update!
oh my.. this is mad insane, and looks BETTER
I am undecided on the grill... The previous vertical ones seems quite adequate. And even though this is a face lift, quite disappointing there is no soft close option for the doors.
Finally, a well deserved refresh, the prior model, though modern, was starting to show its age.
great update Volvo did.
So you basically happy you old car is not outdated and Volvo is stuck in the past.
It is not integrated because it is larger.
@@benjaminsmith2287no shite, Sherlock, but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t integrate it.
Hybrid is good, outside design is really nice. BUTTTTT!!! Interior... that is still a shame! But at least it has a home for the speedometer!
Thanks for the report!
This is the best model facelift I’ve ever seen. It was always an attractive vehicle but this is fantastic.
Goddamn, would kill to have this car, however, it costs literally 17k more than the pre facelift, which costs 63k... Sad that most people won't be able to afford it😢
Autogefuhl and carexpert you guys should do a joint Collab on vehicle reviews. Because I don't think there is anyone who does more in depth and highly detailed vehicle reviews.

pretty happy with the update but miss two things fast charging and bigger battery
