The vegan burgers at fast food chains aren't really there to attract individual vegans, they are there so that groups of friends who have 1 vegan in the mix don't immediately exclude that chain from their choices because one person can't eat there. And also for non-vegans who wanna maybe try it out of curiosity.
My bff has been vegetarian for 8 years and for ages my whole friend group did not go to McDonalds bc of her, we'd pick other places that could please everyone.

Burger king employee here to rain on your parade - the 'vegan' whopper, isn't actually vegan - it's broiled on the exact same broiler as the meat burgers, soaking in all of those meat juices and flavours as it goes through. Sure the PATTY may be crafted with plants and other vegan ingredients, however they are called plant BASED burgers for a reason, and the cooking process nulifies any veganity - unless SPECIFICALLY asked to microwave they told me when I began preparing them (the same microwave that heats up all the non vegan items so yeah still not really vegan even with the lesser option there.
There's a simple reason why it's the best mimic, and nobody should ever trust a meat server to provide a wholistic non meat product.

As a life long vegetarian (not vegan) I've eaten a LOT of vegetable burgers, some good, some not so good and some really good ones, I'll have to agree that as far as commercially available to the general public options, the Whopper is by far the best. It really comes down to the toppings and I'm an "all the way" guy - everything on it and ketchup, mustard, mayo and pickles. Of course a good, sturdy bun makes all the difference as well. By the way, Ollie's southern accent is pretty damn good! (I'm a southern boy as well). You should come to Charleston, SC and take it all in - the geographical beauty of the rivers and the bays and the ocean (and beaches) along with the stunning architecture, culture, arts and, most importantly, the FOOD! There is plenty of good vegan food. But dairy vegan alternatives are usually terrible and vegan cheeses are at best inoffensive in most cases (said as someone who can't tolerate lactose so I've tried a lot of them and they are absolutely nowhere near actual cheese and in a lot of cases are just horrible). The pea protein based meat substitutes are significantly better than soy based ones.

You're right, they've greatly improved. I for one grew up with tofu being like the main glorified vegan option so I think that alone scared many away. Since then I've changed to oat milk just because flat out it tastes better than cow milk. The vegan cheese I've tried has been passable, still has a bit of an aftertaste not quite like the real thing. I've tried impossible bugers, vegan chorizo, and chicken strips all of which surprised me at how much like the real thing they were. (Even my bf was fooled by the pea protein based chorizo and enjoyed it) In that regard you are 100% right. However, there is still the problem of availability. You go to big cities and I bet you will have an easier time finding that stuff in store... dairy nation in the midwest however... there's like 1 dairy alternative for cheese, butter, cream cheese, each... Thankfully milk alternatives at least are becoming more readily available.

I think it's also that a lot of people don't realize that a huge amount of food we eat is vegan by nature. They hear "vegan" and assume you have to do some weird food wizardry to make the food. It also doesn't help that a lot of vegan people are so militant about it.

I am really torn when it comes to vegetarian or vegan substitutes for meat. I have been a vegetarian for 20 years now, and even if it now is more because of how the animals are treated, it started because I stopped liking meat. So I can't eat substitutes options that are supposed to be as similar to meat as possible, for example beyond burger. I rather have lenthil or halloumi burgers. But I am still very happy that there are options like these for the people who want to eat meat but can't, or choose not to. So I hope that this video show that there are vegan and vegetarian options which taste good and not like grass.
