OoooOooOOOooohhHHhh WOOOOOOOW! THANK you for the tip about widening the bottom of the hem! It's been 35+ years since I've worked on men's pants. New husband and now new pants. 🤣 I need to take up the length by 2" and am refreshing myself. I am SO thankful I found you! When I was young, I didn't know how to adjust for the tapering and had puckered hems. NOW because of THIS I know how to prevent it. I'm a quilter now and sew a LOT, but not as much clothes making, so I needed to find YOU!

Mr. McFarland is a master tailor. He's been in business since the 1960s. You have to pay some money to see him sew anything. I understand where you're coming from. But if I was doing a podcast and I had his experience, you would have to cough up some cash. He has old school videos you can buy on his website
So that is why a recent hemming on two pair of pants went wrong. I measured wrong. Really great information.

My favorite tip you share is how important it is to realize that pants often taper down, and are narrower at the bottom, which is why so many pants pucker at the new hem line.
Then you give clear guidance on how to solve that problem.
(I have noticed this problem when shortening jacket sleeves, too.)
So many other tutorials on TH-cam have left out this important step.
Mich Rich u have to taper the jacket sleeves too because the more you shorten sleeves the hem part gets smaller and it won’t lay flat or right when pressed
You truly are a Gentleman and a Scholar. I have hemed many of his pants. But recently my husband bought a suit and the Taylor hand hemmed his pants to his size. When I examend his workmsnship, I was very surprised and impressed. It was the first time I had seen this. He opened the side seams so it would not pucker at the bottom. And not only this, he had folded the same amount of cloth inside and also hand sewed the inner rim of the pant legs. I was truly impressed. I have seen other taylors hem suit pants rather poorly. You have given the best and most profesional advise. When a man walks with a well sewn and well taylored suit, it is just flawless.

Thank you so much. I’m a brand new sewist. One of the reasons I became interested in sewing and creating better fitting clothes is because I am shorter than most women but taller than what is considered “petite”. As a result, nearly every pair of pants I buy need a hem. Sadly I have cut so many pairs of pants incorrectly and had to throw them out or cut them all the way down to shorts (if they were jeans to start). I love flare jeans and I have several pair of nice dress pants and flare jeans, that I now feel confident that I will be able to hem properly. Again, thank you so much and Bravo YOU ROCK! 😁👏💃

Also, I was curious about the right way to overcome the tapering problem. I'll now open the seam. I feel much better after watching you!

I just did a massive alteration turning trousers into shorts at diff lengths and couldn't figure out why it was puckering at times! Duh! Thank you for clearing it up!

I have 6 pairs of pants my cousin needs hem. I told him he needs to try them on first so I can get a correct measurement but he said."just take the inseam of my others pants".Tried to let him know they were different styles and fit. I won't hem them until he tries them on to see if he wears them at the waist or below or above the waist.

Excellent. I had trouble with a tailor who messed up two pairs of expensive trousers also, he could not understand that every length of trousers can be different depending on the rise.
Sir, thank you for this guidsnce. My husband is a very big guy, though shirt in stature. Hemming his pants proves yo be problematic due to the narrower bottom and the wider area where the fold up to to be. Does the opening the side seams work for this situation as well?
wonderful knowledge, friends, try chalk on the inside legs and transfer chalk lines to outside side of same leg after. Thank me later
As the tailor says you need both inside and outside leg measures, bespoke will include a toe and heel sometimes too

How do you avoid the pucker while tapering the pants. How can I foresee this in the act of tapering ?

PLEASE CAN WE GET HOW TO CUT AND TAILORING ????
What if we need basic or intermediate tailoring advice, because our goals aren't so lofty? I need to hem sweatpants. If possible, I would just cut them, if the cut won't slowly fray. I think getting professional tailoring is good if you have a pair of dress pants or the bottoms from a suit, but with sweatpants, most people aren't as picky.

Disagree. Measurement from inner leg doesn’t change, whether low or high on waist.
