Wow! I was just looking at various sewing videos (I'm an old geezer with a sewing machine.. Don't judge) and after watching this, I realized that this place was less than two blocks from where I live! She's my hero!
@@LaynieFingers Wow! Thank you for your encouragement. I will forever be a student of everything and anything and always happy to find like-minded individuals. :-)
This has to be one of the most helpful sewing channels I’ve ever come across.. I’ve been trying to figure out how to alter my own jeans for a while now and you make it so quick and easy to follow! No overexplaining to the point of complications and no long pauses in between anything! It’s fantastic! Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Oh boy did this bring back memories. My parents had a dry cleaners and we did alterations all the time for customers. Hemming jeans, taking in jeans, replacing zippers, resetting sleeves, all sorts of alterations. Thank goodness for Brother and Juki industrial sewing machines!
This is how my mom and grandma taught me. I came to TH-cam to see if there are any different or better methods to try just for the sake of learning new things but I guess if it works it works. This is a perfect video btw. No long intros or obnoxious music. The speeding up of certain parts and just the right about of explaining. Perfect.

You make it look so easy but a lot of work and knowledge goes into it. Extremely talented and has given me a new appreciation for having things altered. I will never complain again about the price for alterations.

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I'm by no means a professional tailor, and I'm tremendously grateful for how accessible you make the entire process! I have a petite, hourglass figure and so both hemming and taking the waist in are typically necessary. Thank you for teaching the process so even I can do this at home because I have all the tools (just not the finances for a professional tailor such as yourself at this time). ❤️
I love that we see her using a razor blade. I had no idea that in the factory seam rippers are rarely, if ever used, until I visited one. they use razor blades which are so much faster and sharper.
I've always used one. When they are super sharp (and properly handled), they're less likely to damage the garment. I also have these little circular plastic gadgets with a blade, which hide the blade when not in use. I've forgotten the name of them. But sooo useful, and definitely better than a seam ripper!
You must have been working on those jeans at a laundry store judging by the setup you have there and I love the way you took those jeans in and got it all correct. I worked in a prison and we had inmates who operated the sewing machines we had and it was a Juki and and older Singer model and they was great machines. I am looking to buy a Singer for use at home as I can't afford a Juki for my personal use. I thank you so much for demonstrating how to do this work and may God Bless you, your family, and coworkers.
Thank you very much! There are times where you can find older Jukis for a great price and it doesn’t matter how old they are, they will still work well. Good luck in your projects!
You man are not lazy you did an excellent job and gave us great tips on how to shorten the Jean's. Drawing lines ironing pinning those are all parts of sewing that make the difference in weather the garment looks homemade and cheap or professional and you man are a PRO, pa pa pa pa PROFESSIONAL!

Great tutorial. Specially on the hem. I watched many tutorials on it before but they were so confusing I gave up , now you made it so simple that I think I can do it too. Thank you !
Omg this video has been a saving grace!!! My son(who is 6 and starting 1st grade in a week) takes after me and has short little legs. So any pants I buy him that fit the waist are absurdly long. That's actually one of the reasons I've started learning to sew in the first place. (And because I want to be a cool mom who can make him epic Halloween costumes lol) Anyways, I have several new pants I need to hem for him. And this is super helpful!
I wish I had the heavy duty/all metal construction sewing machine that you have. My mother had one, a Singer. It was durable and easy to fix. These days we have sewing machines like Brother with plastic components that easily break down when the plastic parts go through a quick wear and tear. This is how the Cabal wants our society; disposable everything and therefore nothing lasts including sewing machines. We keep buying and buying to enrich the Cabal. Even Singer's quality has severely deteriorated. The name used to mean quality. Now it is just like all the others with plastic components. Use it to hem that thick pair of pants and it will likely grind the plastic components and render the sewing machine useless. Thank you very much for sharing your expertise. You also have this wonderful, old world, calm demeanor about you which makes it pleasant to listen to you.
Easy to do. I’ve altered more Levi’s then I can remember. Replacing zippers is a breeze. Just a suggestion, when you roll the hem in place tap the really thick spots with a hammer a few times. It really helps your machine handle it better.
Oh yes that is a great advice! I forgot to show it on camera in this video because it was just a quick vlog but if you check out our detailed tutorial in the description box, we give it a nice smack like some fresh meat from the grocery store lol
This video brought back so much memories to me i used to love working in an alteration shop , everyday was new challenges but i would always get Jean's to take up & to tighten waist Very talented
What a great gift to have especially for those who’s legs are on the short side. Even if stores would do unfinished hems that you could take up yourself or better still stores offer this to their customers for a small fee. I’m sure John Lewis, M&S and Next etc. could offer this service.
Thank you for a concise method of alteration. I've been sewing and quilting for many years and more recently I've been doing alterations for my beautiful neighbour whose husband mows my lawns. She has a petite body shape and clothes are always too long and need altering. I love being able to repay their generosity and my alterations have been successful so far but learning the exact method is very helpful. I've just found your channel. Do you have other tutorials on alterations?
A beautiful and extremely wonderful display. I wish you permanent happiness, success and progress in your wonderful work. Health and safety to all of you with the utmost thanks and respect. Greetings.💕💕💕💕💕
Excellent precision..I need this service.. every time I buy a new jeans..great job..mam you are talented and a thorough professional..Lord Jesus Christ bless you
I really never comment on videos, but I just had to say, you are so talented and professional, but beyond that, you're just adorable! So fun to watch and your good humor shines throughout your video. Thanks for the instruction! I was too scared to try a waist alteration, but I think I'll give it a go now.
Thank you so much! This is so sweet I am very flattered! Yes! You should give that alteration an attempt and our tutorial on it is very detailed. Good luck! :)
I rarely use my sewing machine (only for fixing things) and always use pins. You're so pro you don't consider pins for hemming. Wish I can be skilled like you one day. I love the video!
I have been doing my jean hems exactly like this for decades! It’s so easy & looks very professional! The part of taking in the waist does take quite a long while! This talented lady does this a lot so it’s faster for her plus you have to know where & how to find the right thread to pull so it comes out in one long piece otherwise if you cut it from the wrong side, it wont just “zip” out & then it takes a while! I don’t like cutting out the middle seam like is exampled here! I usually make 2 smaller darts from the waistband down past the pickets, then split them so there is no lump, press them & use Stop Fray! I would rather leave the natural line of the jean seams if I can figure a way to do it! But yes! It does take a while to do this waist alteration unless you are a professional as this nice young lady is! This is not what a beginner should do on an expensive pair of jeans! Save your old, & completely, worn out jeans to practice on! That’s what I use to do! Her work is very good!
Thank you so much for those flattering words. You could not be more correct! In my case, I prefer to do it in the middle seam because you can go a bit lower in order to to hug the hips better. I use darts when the hip:waist ratio is high and it works wonders because the fabric is more distributed across the back and not just the centre. However, everything you said it true. At some point in the future, we will upload a tutorial on how to take in the waist using darts so that the alteration can be a lot more accessible to everyone! :)
Downtown Cobbler I’m going to give your method a try! If it can make the hips shape better...that’s great! I have to adjust the hips in my jeans or any trousers for that matter & I’m always looking for ways of a more flattering look! I can not wear women’s trousers or if I do I have to take in the hips from the knees up! I usually buy my jeans in the junior girls department so I don’t have as much work to do on them! As of right now, I have 4 pairs of jeans waiting to be altered & I’m going to give your method a try! Thank you again for the information! You have been very kind with your sharing! Happy Sewing!
@@catscompany735 Thank you! From what you've said, perhaps a more flattering style for your body type is low-rise jeans. Anyway, if you are going to try it out then check out our tutorial on it because we give all the details and instruction. Good luck, happy sewing! :)
This is a really good tutorial, thank you. I am making a skirt using only the part of the jeans with out the legs and adding the skirt material on the bottom. This answers my question as to how to tailor the waist because my jeans are below the waist so I need to create a waist band. This is one good idea.
Your videos are so educational and professional! If I can make a request, please take a low waist jeans and make them into a mid (or high) waist jeans. I see most people take shortcuts by cutting a hole in the crotch area and just sewing it without thinking of the details. I'd like to see how you seam rip, measure and cut out properly and then sewing it back together with the flat felt stitch. Thank you!
I add a piece the same kind of material at the crotch that we call it Gussets it help ,I do that on Police pants. Ripping anything you have to clean the loose thread and press it , I always make ( a pattern) cut a paper first on what ever I am doing to make sure. I hope this help.
You mean putting "gusset on the crotch? I do that for the police pants to highten the waistlines. For myself I add a piece of material 2 or 1 1/2 inches on the waist line then put back the waist band. I never did it yet to a customer's. I don't cut a hole on the crotch I rip it nicely. There are some good seam ripper that you can but it at Fabric Store.
Thanks for the tutorial. I have seen others put darts on each side of the jeans. I will try it this way. I went from sz 12 to 8 and have jeans that were my favorite. Now I need to get them to fit or make them into something else.
thank you! my husband accidentally bought our son womens jeans. theyre so nice, but they have curves at the side for wide hips/thighs and my son is very lanky. they look like saddle pants. using this tutorial to take in the thighs. and using the hem for our daughters jeans that are 6 inches too long. thank you so much!
Nice video. I can tell by your shop you are a professional. I always tell people I can tell a pro and his level of work by walking into the shop. And tell tale is you sewing seams with out marking lines. Your eye is right on and know what 1/2 in is. :) Being a professional craftsman myself of 50 yrs. and seeing many other shops in my line I feel proud I'm above so many of them. I use a Juki LU-1510N 7 myself. Leather canvas and upholstery work.
I'm glad I came here to watch you do a denim waist! I remember going to an interview where I did this same method, but the jerk hiring was faking his critique on the way I was "not correctly" sewing the denim hem 🙄 also, (anyone can answer this) How long does it take for you to hem and take in the waist time total?
So helpful!! Rarely do we get a chance to see such a complete alteration. I just don't like the camera speeding past anything. I need to see everything in real time. People who really want to learn don't care how long it takes. Excellent job. Hope you made they pay dear,y for all that skill. Jeans are extremely costly.
Vc é muito rápida e prática. Fica pronta rapidinho seus consertos e c muita precisão. Rende muito seu trabalho. Parabéns amei suas explicações. Um abração aqui d Brasil 🙌🙌🙌🙌😍🇧🇷🇧🇷
If the inside of the hem is a chain stitch, I gently pull it out in one long thread and rewind that on a bobbin to reuse. It has always turned out great for me! Helpful too on colours that I just don't have a match for. :)
Yesss! I love to do that when I can't find the matching thread m.tiktok.com/v/6908739530375957765.html?u_code=dea62a49m10c0c&preview_pb=0&language=en&_d=dea98maa5j27jg&share_item_id=6908739530375957765×tamp=1610678347&user_id=6869058504377467909&sec_user_id=MS4wLjABAAAAQ8VvHIrYqgD8DdlMNvaq4U1bABDgGx4E2t8jc3YT7ayL2kqPqHhMtoae8xRDJMSB&share_app_name=musically&share_iid=6912680270836745989&share_link_id=60f0dd1e-91bd-47d5-ba2f-e468c624c05b
Glad this was helpful! The price would depend but generally we charge around $26 Canadian dollars for this alteration. It is definitely a project but we are actually uploading a super detailed tutorial on this right now so come back to watch it in a couple of hours. Cheers!
Downtown Cobbler It really doesn’t take long if you’ve done it before! It’s taking out the stitches to do it, is what takes up your time! They don’t always “zip” out like in the video! You have to pick the right thread that’s going in the right direction!

Loved watching a professional. I hope to do alterations that well one day. Thx for sharing
Awww thank you so much! I’m sure you will :))
Thank you! Hope it goes well, check out our tutorial for details and instructions :)
Very professional معنى الإحتراف والإتقان 👌👌👌
Thanks so much for sharing this very valuable way to alter length and waist! Learning so much from you.
Wow thank you Shirley, that is so kind!
BRAVO!!! It's fun watching a Master at work!!!
Oh wow I’m so flattered, thank you!!!
I have jeans to alter this video helped me a lot especially that waist alteration
I’m so glad to hear that! Please check out our more detailed tutorial for the waist take in! Happy sewing :)
thank you! my husband accidentally bought our son womens jeans. theyre so nice, but they have curves at the side for wide hips/thighs and my son is very lanky. they look like saddle pants. using this tutorial to take in the thighs. and using the hem for our daughters jeans that are 6 inches too long. thank you so much!
That is awesome! 🥰
LOVE this so much! Thank you! Quick, to the point, expert technique perfectly explained!
Wow thank you so much!!!!
Now, this is a master at work.
Wow! Thank you! :D
You make it look easy but it's not, especially the waist! 🤣🤣 ❤️
Haha thank you! Practice makes perfect :)
Nice video. I can tell by your shop you are a professional. I always tell people I can tell a pro and his level of work by walking into the shop. And tell tale is you sewing seams with out marking lines. Your eye is right on and know what 1/2 in is. :)
Being a professional craftsman myself of 50 yrs. and seeing many other shops in my line I feel proud I'm above so many of them. I use a Juki LU-1510N 7 myself. Leather canvas and upholstery work.
Thank you very much! Congratulations for reaching that level in your craft!
Omg jeans are very hard to work on them. But you did a fabulous job.😉
I'm glad I came here to watch you do a denim waist! I remember going to an interview where I did this same method, but the jerk hiring was faking his critique on the way I was "not correctly" sewing the denim hem 🙄
also, (anyone can answer this) How long does it take for you to hem and take in the waist time total?
You are Not lazy / You are Smart ❣
Haha thank you!
Thank you for the feedback and the kind comments. Cheers! :)))
Thank you very much for teaching us how to do the hem and waist ...
Glad you liked it! :)
Excellent video great job showing the ins and outs taking the pants in and hemming
Glad you liked it :)
Great job! I’m too lazy to do all that, I just dart on the sides..🤷🏻♀️

I've always wanted to learn the taylor's tricks! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Glad you liked it :)
How I wish I had a hanging iron like that one 😂 Great video!
Thank you!! 😊
If the inside of the hem is a chain stitch, I gently pull it out in one long thread and rewind that on a bobbin to reuse. It has always turned out great for me! Helpful too on colours that I just don't have a match for. :)
Yesss! I love to do that when I can't find the matching thread

Thank you, was very helpful. Please tell me how much you would charge for taking in the waist. That’s a LOT of work. Thx.
Glad this was helpful! The price would depend but generally we charge around $26 Canadian dollars for this alteration. It is definitely a project but we are actually uploading a super detailed tutorial on this right now so come back to watch it in a couple of hours. Cheers!
@@DowntownTailoring That's a lot of work for $26!!! You're amazing!
@@wendystumbaugh695 Thank you for recognizing the work and for the compliment :)
@@DowntownTailoring How much do you charge for both, hemming and taking in the waist? Thx.
Where have you been all my life? I love your work. I am your newest and biggest fan.
Thanks so much for watching our videos ☺
Thank you for the tutorial. How long does it take in real time to alter the back and waist? Thx.
Thank you! Depends on the tailor's experience but it can take between 20 minutes to 1 hour. On average, it can be done in 40 minutes.
Downtown Cobbler It really doesn’t take long if you’ve done it before! It’s taking out the stitches to do it, is what takes up your time! They don’t always “zip” out like in the video! You have to pick the right thread that’s going in the right direction! Happy Sewing!
